Chapter 2
After your time at Hogwarts came to an end, you stayed in touch with Severus. Eventually, the two of you got together and became practically inseparable. You spent many a night, just as you had at school, reading and just being together. It was nice. But his feelings for Lily never faltered, you knew this when one night he came to your shared home in tears when he had relayed a prophecy to the Dark Lord. Voldemort thought it referred to Lily and James, with their one year old boy. He was going to kill them.
You comforted Snape that night. You let him pour his heart out, holding him close and comforting him. You loved Severus. He definitely cared for you too, but not in the same way as he had Lily. The two of you went to Dumbledore, swearing yourself trustworthy to help the war against the Dark Lord and becoming double agents. Putting your own life at risk for the sake of Severus and his love for another woman. If anyone knew, people would've told you to leave - but you stayed by his side through it all.
That's why it was so hard to be standing here in the shrieking shack watching Lord Voldemort and his snake, Nagini, circle Severus as if he were a simple piece of prey. You'd accompanied Severus to the shack after a worn looking Lucius had informed you that the Dark Lord wanted him there as soon as possible. You watched from the side of the room as they spoke in turn about the Elder Wand. Severus wasn't explaining quick enough.
"As I understand it," Voldemort spoke, "you were the one to kill Dumbledore. The wand can never truly be mine if you're still alive, Severus."
"No!" You cried out. "That's not true, my Lord. Please let me explain!"
"Be quiet, you foolish girl," He hissed at you.
"The Malfoy boy disarmed Dumbledore! Then Harry did the same to him at the manor, it's the boy!" You sobbed, "The bloody boy!"
"Is this true, Severus?" The Dark Lord asked him, almost too calm to be true.
"I'm not sure, my Lord, I don't think [first name] is in the right mind currently," Severus glanced at you with a harsh look, "She was hit by a hex on our way here. I think she's a bit addled, my Lord."
"It is a shame I have to do this," Voldemort sighed, "the two of you were my best. So very loyal."
The dark wizard cast a spell towards Severus, spoke in parseltongue, then turned away from the two of you. Your first thought, and action, was to lunge towards Severus. The snake came hurling towards the two of you, knocking you both to the floor side by side. Blood sprayed the walls behind you as the snake's teeth ripped at Snape's skin, then yours. The venom burning your insides slowly, painfully. Voldemort, pleased with his actions, apparated away from the scene.
You sobbed quietly, clutching Severus' arm tightly but your grip was weakening. The door burst open and in came Harry Potter himself, followed by his two best friends. Harry rushed over, putting pressure on Snape's wounds and you saw the tears falling from his eyes.
"Take them!" He cried out to Harry.
Whilst Harry got a vial from Hermione, you whispered to Severus sadly, "I tried to save you. Save us. It didn't have to be like this."
Snape could barely talk as Harry stored his tears, and after instructing him to go to the pensieve, he whispered to Harry, "You have your mothers eyes."
Harry helped you replace his hand that was against the slash on Severus' neck, then left with a sad glance.
"Lily," Your voice was hoarse, "I'm sorry Severus, I really am. I hope you get to see her again."
"No," He whispered, tears still rolling down his face, "I love you."
"Death is where I leave you, for good this time," You cried, "Loving a man who loved another. People are going to remember me a fool."
"I'm sorry," His eyelids drooped slightly, "I should never have let you stay."
"I would never have left you," You felt your own vision fading, "I love you, Severus."
Your hand fell from his neck, but stayed against his body as you closed your eyes for the last time. Severus let out one last inhuman sob before he followed suit.
Your spirits left your bodies behind, and now the two of you were staring down at your bodies. You faced him.
"I was always going to die for you, Severus," You said gently, "but you were always going to die for her. For her son. You are a great man, never forget it."
"Please.. no-"
But his efforts were in vain. Your spirit vanished and he was left alone. Staring down at the body of a woman that shouldn't have died.
