Terms and Defentions

Terms and definitions of unique Wizarding words:

Animagi: An Animagus (pl. Animagi) was a witch or wizard who could transform themselves into an animal and back again at will.
Notable ones are: James Potter- Stag, Sirus Black- Grim, Peter Petticrew- Rat, Rita Skeeter- Beattle, Minerva McGonagall- tabby cat

Arithmancers: Arithmancy is the practice of assigning a numerical value to words for the purpose of divination. An Arithmancer was a wizard or witch who specialized in the field of Arithmancy, a branch of magic that involved using complicated number charts to make predictions. Arithmancer and Arithmancy come from the Greek αριθμός (arithmos), meaning "number", and μαντεία (manteia), meaning "divination".

Ghosts: A ghost is the transparent, three-dimensional imprint of a deceased witch or wizard, which continues to exist in the mortal world. Muggles cannot come back as ghosts, and the wisest witches and wizards choose not to. Hogwarts has several.

Dementor: A Dementor was a gliding, wraithlike Dark creature, widely considered to be one of the foulest to inhabit the wizarding world. Dementors fed on human happiness and thus generated feelings of depression and despair in any person in close proximity to them. They are guards at the prison. they also can be controlled by the ministry of magic, somewhat.

Legilimency : The act of magically navigating through the many layers of a person's mind and correctly interpreting one's findings. this can only be done by someone who has studied this artform and is illegal to use without the permission in most cases. Snape tells us that Legilimency is more complicated than mind-reading.
Notable Legilmens: Severus Snape, Albus Dumbledore, Voldemort aka Tom Riddle, Bellatrix Lestrange, Queenie Goldstein

Metamorphmagi:a witch or wizard with the ability to change his or her physical appearance at will, rather than requiring Polyjuice Potion or a spell-like the rest of the wizarding population. They are extremely rare. This is a hereditary trait. They can not become Animagi.
Notable Metamorphmagi: Nymphadora Tonks-Lupin, Teddy Lupin

Parseltongue:the language of serpents (as well as other magical serpentine creatures, like the Runespoor and Basilisk) and those who could converse with them. A wizard or witch who could speak Parseltongue was known as a Parselmouth. It was a very uncommon skill and was known to be an almost exclusively hereditary trait. In some fanfiction, Parslmouths were best for ward building, curse breaking, and healing. VERY RARE!!
Notable ones: Voldemort, Harry Potter

Seers:A Seer was a gifted wizard or witch who had the ability to see into the future with their Inner Eye. True seers are rare. There are only two official ones named in Cannon: Cassandra Trelawney, a celebrated Seer of the 19th century, and her great-great-granddaughter Sybill. In Fanfiction, Luna Lovegood is popular to use as such as is Daphane Greengrass.

Squibs: A Squib, also known as a wizard-born, was a non-magical person who was born to at least one magical parent. Squibs were, in essence, "wizard-born Muggles". They were rare and were looked upon with a degree of disdain by some witches and wizards, particularly pure-bloods.
known squibs: Angus Buchanan, Dolores Umbridge's brother, Marius Black, Arabella Figg, Argus Filch

Obscurus: An Obscurus is a type of powerful magical parasite that forms when a wizard or witch suppresses their magical ability. An Obscurial is a person whose body is a host for the Obscurus. Typically, Obscurials die before their tenth birthday. This is something that rarely occurs when a witch or wizard is taught to be ashamed of their magic, extreme abuse, and or trauma. THEY ARE VERY RARE!
Notable ones: Credence Barebone, possibly Ariana Dumbledore due to Trauma.

Occlumency: Occlumency was the magic of closing one's mind against Legilimency. It was ancient and had existed since medieval times. It could prevent a Legilimens from accessing one's thoughts and feelings, or influencing them. It was teachable but extremely difficult to master.
Known ones: Maxwell Barnett, Barty Crouch Jr, Albus Dumbledore, Bellatrix Lestrange, Draco Malfoy, Severus Snape, Horace Slughorn, Voldemort
