Being Draco Malfoy

Being Draco Malfoy was a lonely ordeal.

-

Being Draco Malfoy meant that your friends leave you after a war.

"Pansy, please. Please, you don't-"

"You let them in the castle! You- you're so lucky that Potter is the bloody chosen one! I... I can't be your friend anymore, Malfoy. This is all," Pansy shook her head and blinked hard, tears coming from her eyes, "I can't. I'm sorry but I just need to be away from you."

Draco watched his vision go blurry and his best friend leave him in the dust.

-

Being Draco Malfoy meant you live with one other, and only one.

Draco had gotten a flat in London, close to a muggle food joint. He started a job there soon. His money had mostly been taken a couple days after the war.

Narcissa had moved in with him, because they'd lost the manor as well.

-

Being Draco Malfoy meant life throws curve balls from every possible angle.

"That's not right. My- my mother is perfectly fine! She's healthy as me!" Draco said angrily.

"Well the scans are saying otherwise, Mr.Malfoy." The doctor sighed.

His mother had breast cancer. What was he going to do?

-

Being Draco Malfoy meant cherishing the few you love before your time with them is up.

Four years had passed since his mother had been diagnosed. She was only getting worse. Draco knew this.

He brought her flowers every week and read her books each night before going home and crying himself to sleep.

-

Being Draco Malfoy meant you don't get to love somebody for long.

"I'm sorry sir-"

"How is she just... How do..." Draco sobbed, covering his mouth with his hand, his face was very red hot. He could feel eyes burning into his soul.

His mother was gone.

-

Being Draco Malfoy meant you develop bad habits as a cooping mechanism.

Draco walked into the Café with a tight face, and a tense posture.

"Malfoy?" A girlish voice came from over his shoulder.

Pansy Parkinson stood before him.

-

Being Draco Malfoy meant attending your friends party even if all you could feel lately was sadness.

It'd been 3 years since he got back in touch with Pansy.

"I promise it'll be fun... Please? Ginny and me took forever setting this up!" Pansy griped.

"Fine. Fine I'll go, okay? I just want to he left alone right now." Draco sighed angrily.

"Yay! Thank you Draco. You're a sweetheart." She squealed.

-

Being Draco Malfoy meant you run into the most unexpected of friends and foes.

He had been staring at Potter for the past half hour. Draco hadn't expected Harry to be at Pansy's 5 year anniversary party, but then again, Pansy had married Ginny.

Draco saw how different Harry was now. His hair was only an inch long from his scalp. His eyes seemed duller. He held himself upright differently now. When something was sudden or loud, his hand moved straight to his wand.

That was Draco's fault. He'd caused this reaction, hadn't he?

-

Being Draco Malfoy meant that you started a friendship with Harry Potter at your friend's anniversary party.

He and Harry had been talking a couple times a month lately. They were going to meet at the cafe Draco always visited today.

When Harry walked through the door with a small boy tied onto his chest, Draco had never been so confused.

"This is Conner. Conner say Hi to Draco!" Harry said with a small smile, raising the baby's hand up to do a waving motion at him.

Draco smiled and waved back.

"Hello Conner."

-

Being Draco Malfoy meant that you spend the night with Harry Potter a couple times for the hell of it. But after a while, it becomes a weekly thing.

Draco loved Conner so much. He was only 4 months old now, but he was adorable.

Turns out that a one night stand with Parvati Patil led to a beautiful little boy sleeping in Harry Potter's arms as he watched a movie with Draco.

-

Being Draco Malfoy meant becoming Best friends with Harry Potter after 4 years of talking.

Harry had Parvati watch Conner for Draco's 29th birthday, to take him to a bar to celebrate.

Draco had the time of his life.

Who knew turning 29 meant dancing drunk in Grimmuald Place with Harry Potter?

-

Being Draco Malfoy meant that Harry Potter's son asks you to go to his 3rd grade school concert.

Draco gave Conner the biggest smile from the crowd. Harry was happily cheering and clapping after each song.

Draco took Harry and Conner out for ice cream even though the concert was over only an hour before Conner's bedtime.

-

Being Draco Malfoy meant rubbing your hand up and down Harry Potter's back after he and his son get into a harsh argument.

Since Conner started 5th grade he'd had a drastic change in attitude. Draco had gotten onto him a couple times for raising his voice at him or Harry.

Conner had pulled out the "You're not even my dad!" card a couple times, and it hurt.

Conner had told Harry he hated him, and Harry was crying.

-

Being Draco Malfoy meant helping Harry Potter with his son.

Draco talked to Conner for a long time a couple months after the big fight. Conner had burst into tears and admit he was upset because he found a positive pregnancy test in his mother's trash can while staying with her for the weekend. Though, she never told him. And she never had a baby.

Conner had lost a sibling he was never supposed to know he had.

He apologized to Harry, and Harry took him into a big hug the second he came to him.

-

Being Draco Malfoy meant that you help Conner Potter pack his bags for Hogwarts while Harry Potter cooks Conner's favorite dinner.

"Do you think dad will be okay with me being gone?" Conner asked, folding his new robes in a proper fashion and lying them gently into his suitcase.

"I think he will miss you a bunch. But he'll be okay." Draco smiled, wrapping an arm around Conner's shoulder and kissing his forehead, "I'll send you letters updating you on him every week."

"Promise?"

"I promise." Draco beamed.

Conner sniffled.
"Draco?"

"Yes?"

"Do you mind if I call you my father?"

-

Being Draco Malfoy meant breaking into sobs on Platform 9 and 3/4 because Conner Potter is going to his first year of Hogwarts.

Harry was crying too. Draco laughed sadly and hugged Conner.

"You're getting so big," Draco said softly, "Don't grow up so fast, young man."

Conner beamed a smile.

He turned to Harry.

Harry grinned through his tears.

"I love you son." Harry cried as Conner turned to hug him instead, "I'll miss you so much."

"I'll miss you too dad." Conner's bottom lip trembled as he squeezed his dad, "I love you more than you could ever know."

Harry released his son after a few minutes when the Hogwarts Express hooted at the students in warning they would leave in 5 minutes.

"I should probably get in there..." Conner said sadly.

Draco smiled kindly, though his face was prickling with the urge to cry.

"Bye, Dad." Conner waved to Harry.

He looked to Draco.

"I'll be expecting your letters, Conner." Draco smirked.

"And I shall yours, Father." Conner smiled, "Goodbye."

Harry gave a questioning look for a moment then shook it off.

Conner rushed onto the train. He found his seat quickly, and opened his window to yell at his his father and Draco.

"This is so big!" He smiled, though his bottom lip was trembling and he was about to break into hard sobs.

Harry laughed and walked closer to the train, Draco following close behind.

The train hooted.

The train car doors closed.

Conner's face dropped.

The train started rolling slowly.

Harry walked, slowly, then faster as the train sped up.

"I LOVE YOU CONNER!" He yelled, running as fast as he could.

"I LOVE YOU TOO!" Conner yelled back, his head sticking out from the window.

He was sobbing hard. He was shaking, waving until he saw Harry fall to the floor on his knees and bury his face in his hands.

-

Being Draco Malfoy meant that you keep Harry Potter company while his son is away at Hogwarts.

"He's gotten into Slytherin, he says," Draco smiled, reading the letter that Conner sent them a day after he got to Hogwarts.

Harry was lying in his bed with a half empty box of tissues and a bag of used tissues. His face was all puffy and irritated, his eyes red rimmed.

"Sorting hat almost put him in Ravenclaw! I think both suit him well. What do you think Harry?" Draco said softly. He was writing a letter to Conner on a thick piece of parchment, leaning on the left bedside table.

Harry sniffled and looked up to him with sad eyes.

"That's great. Tell him I'm proud." Harry said. His voice was worn out and raw.

Draco gave a knowing look.

"I know you miss him. But he's okay. I can ask him to floo call tonight if you'd like." Draco offered with a loving tone.

"I would." Harry sighed, "They finally got those floo call rooms installed then?"

"Apparently so. He said it somewhere in his letter." Draco laughed wholeheartedly, "Only one way to find out."

Harry smiled for the first time in the past 32 hours.

-

Being Draco Malfoy meant you make mistakes, but that's okay.

"No no no! Four diced onions." Pansy said quickly, rushing to his side

"Well damn woman! Tell me the instructions clearer next time!" Draco scowled jokingly, leaving the kitchen to her.

Harry, Ron, Blaise, Neville, Dean and Seamus all sat together across from Ginny, Hermione, Luna, Parvati and Padma.

It'd been 18 years since they all graduated. Pansy and Harry had planned the party this time. Harry thought it too be fun, and Pansy just liked planning big events.

The rest of the evening was filled with the recalling of shared memories, childish games they'd play as teenagers, testing aged wines that Pansy and Blaise had brought over and so much more.

Dean and Seamus were married, so that was new news to Draco. Apparently they'd eloped not long after the war. Their daughter was now 5. She was with Seamus's cousin Fergus for the night.

Hermione and Ron were expecting, so she couldn't drink at all. Even Luna and Neville had a kid, and one on the way.

Draco couldn't help but wonder if he'd ever get the chance to have one of his own.

-

Being Draco Malfoy meant arguing with Harry Potter over the letters he sent Conner.

"Why would you tell him all that? He's 11! I don't need my stress piling on top of him!" Harry raised his voice. He'd found out that Draco was telling Conner how Harry was doing every so often.

"I was doing what was right, Harry!" Draco said in a distressed tone, "He's your son! He deserves to know how you're doing! God, it had hurt so much when Lucius didn't tell me! I'm protecting him!"

"You're not protecting him! You' re stressing him out!" Harry cried out.

"YES I AM!" Draco yelled, slamming his fist in the table.

Harry jumped and his hand moved over his pocket where his wand usually was.

"I'm going home." Draco huffed, flicking his wand. His things flew into his arms, and he left out the front door.

-

Being Draco Malfoy was an exceptionally lonely ordeal.

He cried himself to sleep most nights now. His trashcan was filled with empty beer cans. Letters from conner were piling up at the foot of his bed.

Draco wanted to know why he always messed everything up.

12 years of calling Harry his friend down the drain, all because he didn't want Conner to fear for his dad.

-

Being Draco Malfoy meant that Harry Potter refuses to get off your case.

Two months had passed. Harry had sent letters. Draco always opened them but he never responded.

There was now point deeper in love with a man he couldn't have.

-

Being Draco Malfoy meant that Harry Potter storms into your house on a summer morning.

Draco startled as Harry shook him awake.

"Harry? What are you doing here?"

"Stop ignoring me!" Harry cried, "Be my friend again."

Draco looked up to him with tired eyes.

Draco was so tired of being his friend.

"One condition."

"Anything..." Harry's voice was strained.

Draco pursed his lips and sat up in bed.

"You kiss me."

Harry's breath caught.

Draco was worried he'd just fucked up the past 12 years up even more. That perhaps they could have been saved; that he'd now pushed them beyond saving.

Harry stepped closer to the bed, his knees pressed against the bed between Draco's legs.

Draco tilted his head down into Harry's abdomen as Harry's hands rested on his shoulders and cheek.

Draco blinked hard, hot tears staining his cheeks.

"I realize how rude and insensitive I'd been and I'm sorry, Draco." Harry whispered, "Won't you look at me?"

Draco looked up slowly with a trembling bottom lip.

This was not a good look for a 35 year old man.

Harry smiled softly, and learnt down to press his lips to Draco's.

-

Being Draco Potter means waking up early to make breakfast for his daughter, son and husband.

Being Draco Potter means taking Evangeline Potter to her after school sports.

Bring Draco Potter means watching his grandchildren with Harry while Conner took his wife on dates.

Being Draco Potter means being there for Harry when he felt ugly and torn down.

Being Draco Potter means having Harry there to do the same for him.

Being Draco Potter means Pansy throwing the biggest party for his 50th birthday.

Being Draco Potter means being in love.
