Autumn was always unsettling, things died and came to life in the changing of seasons. In the changing of time. Luna always attempted to swallow it down, no one listened to her much anyway. But things are different now. The war had ended, but not really. It was still there littering the background of their lives.

She first saw it in the clouds. The shape of a crow eating a snake. Luna knew that tale, her stomach lurched. And she hurried home early that afternoon.

It appeared next in her tea, the leaves collecting at the bottom of the cup. This time the snake had bitten back. The teacup shattered on the dark wood of her floors. She lied to Ginny for the first time, blaming her shaking hands, remnants of the war.

The final time was at her doorstep. The animals had lost their fight together. Her blood ran cold as she scooped them up, quick to give them a proper burial, murmuring words she had remembered from her mother that had been lost until now. Life was most precarious during Samhain, but most had forgotten this. But not Luna, never Luna. she knew what was coming even if no one would believe her. The evidence was there, chilling her bones, bloodying her lip. The peace was not meant to last.
