Soon you’ll grow, so take a chance with a couple of Kooks pt. 4
Maybe Remus was being a bit dramatic. Maybe he should be a lot more calm about this than he was. Maybe he shouldn’t have taken Teddy to the daycare a fifteen minutes earlier than usual just to hold the small boy in his arms a bit longer before he needed to leave.
Or maybe he was just being his overthinking self.
Remus pressed his nose to Teddy’s beanie covered hair. Taking the sweet smell of babies in just for some comfort. He trusted Sirius and Teddy to be fine in the afternoon. It was just an hour. Nothing could go wrong in an hour, right? But it was still about his son who Remus could do anything and everything to keep safe and happy.
Hell, he would sell his other kidney if it came down to it.
So he worried, not because he didn’t trust everything to go well. But because Teddy is his precious one and he isn’t used to not being the one in charge.
“I’m so glad you can’t tell me to piss off ,” Remus murmured as he pressed his lips to Teddy’s head. “Please don’t hate me for today, okay? Sirius is very nice and you seemed to get along yesterday, yeah?”
Teddy babbled and Remus nodded his head, like he was agreeing with what came out of his mouth.
“Exactly, you’ll be fine and then I’ll be back and if everything goes to shit- oh sorry I shouldn’t curse around you,” Remus apologised, knowing very well Teddy did, in fact, not give a shit. If you could say that about babies. “If something goes wrong, which it won't, just know that I love you very much and I won’t get into any detentions ever again”
Remus sighed, but made his way inside. He couldn’t run away from today, so better just face it.
-
Remus was glancing at the clock above the blackboard, chewing anxiously on his lower lip. He was tapping his fingers on the table. It clearly annoyed Peter next to him who sighed annoyedly from time to time. Remus tried to stop, putting his hands under his thighs. He tried to focus on the book in front of him, but the lines were jumping, making the words gibberish.
Remus sighed and glanced at the clock again. The time didn’t seem to go any faster no matter how often he stared at the slowly moving pointers.
Remus felt his phone vibrate in his pocket and glanced at their teacher. He was busy staring at his computer screen, looking way too happy to be actually doing something he should. Remus got his phone out of his pocket and read the text he had gotten.
Sirius Black:
14:37
i can literally feel you freaking out from the other side of the room
Remus slowly turned to look at the back of the classroom where Sirius and James were sitting. Sirius was already looking at Remus and smiled slightly as their eyes met. Remus gave him a lot more tighter smile back before he turned back to his phone
14:38
Sorry
Remus was about to write another text but got a reply immediately.
14:38
why tf are you apologising?????
Remus felt his cheeks grew warm and was thankful he was turned away from Sirius
14:39
It’s not that I don’t trust you with Teddy, but idk
It was as if he could hear Sirius scoff from the other side of the room and turned to look at the other boy who rolled his eyes at him
14:39
i’d be more worried if you were all chill and not worried at all
14:39
like dude
14:40
it’s your fucking baby of course you’re worried??!!!!!
Remus sighed and glanced at their teacher who still wasn’t paying any attention to the students in the room. Remus didn’t know what to answer, so instead he stared at the texts and hovered his fingers over the keyboard
14:41
but i think me and Tedster are pretty chill 😎
Remus felt like choking on nothing as he looked at Sirius’ text. Did his friend just give his son a nickname? He whipped his head around a bit dramatically to look at Sirius with his mouth hanging open. Sirius grinned at him and then went to type something.
14:42
you like Teddy’s new nickname?
14:42
i thought that now that me and Tedster are best friends AND because im definitely his favourite and NOT james so we could move to the nickname state
Remus shook his head, but didn’t even try to fight the smile from spreading on his lips.
14:43
I can’t believe you gave my son a nickname but not me ;(
Sirius took some time to answer which gave Remus time to regret his text. Was it too much? Did he seem clingy? He was obviously joking. It wasn’t like he needed a nickname. Sirius was just trying to take his mind off of worrying, which was working. But now he was just worrying about something else.
14:45
im working on it Wolf Wolf
Remus’ mouth dropped open again. Of course he knew how ridiculous his name is. He just hadn’t realised someone else had caught it too. But to be honest Sirius out of all should be the one to get it. Not everyone was named after a fucking star either.
14:45
me and Tedster just connected on another level yk? i could basically feel him agreeing with the nickname
14:46
he was chilllll about it too
Remus chuckled and saw from the corner of his eye how Peter glanced at him.
14:48
I didn’t know you were some kind of baby whisperer.
14:48
trust me Remus im a lot of things :)))
Remus didn’t have time to answer or much to think about Sirius' answer as their teacher stood up from his chair. Clearly finally remembering he was supposed to be teaching them.
“Right, class. You’re free to go, I’ll see you next time,” he said and with that sat back down on his chair. Remus' heart dropped to his stomach as he looked at the time. He had five minutes before the detention.
Maybe if he got to Ms Ellis earlier he could also leave earlier.
Remus was so deep in his thoughts that he didn’t even recall packing his things and walking out of the classroom until gentle fingers brushed over his palm. So gently and just for a moment, so quickly that Remus could have sworn he had imagined it. Only if Sirius wasn’t standing next to him as he turned to look to the side.
“Hi,” he said quietly, oddly quietly. Remus wasn’t used to seeing Sirius act so quiet and calm. Expect last night and whatever it had been. Remus tried not to think about it, because he doesn’t want to get disappointed.
“Didn’t want to scare you,” Sirius said and a glint of humour flashed in his eyes. “Seeing as you already look like you’re second away from shitting yourself”
Remus scoffed and rolled his eyes, “Kind of you”
Sirius rolled his eyes too, but then knocked their shoulders together. “It will be okay, seriously!” Remus saw the smile pass on his lips and tried not to scoff again. “I wouldn’t suggest it if I thought I wouldn’t handle it”
And see, that’s what Remus had been telling himself too. But it felt a lot more convincing coming from Sirius. So Remus nodded his head.
“Okay, but remember that if he-”
“Remus,” Sirius interrupted him. “I appreciate that, but I will literally kick you if you go through that list of things that could go to shit one more time”
Remus looked to the ground.
“And don’t apologise again”
Remus raised his eyebrows at Sirius and cocked his head, “Am I really that easy to be read?”
Sirius struggled and glanced at the clock, “No, I just knew what you were going to say. I also know that you need to go if you don’t want to be late. And that I need to get going”
And Sirius was right it was already three and his detention was supposed to be at three. So Remus sighed and turned to walk, but not before turning to Sirius who was already shaking his head.
“Nope, you go now,” Sirius said and walked backwards towards the doors that led outside, but then stopped. “And actually, you didn’t hear this from me, but Ms Ellis always leaves the classroom during detentions. So it’s a perfect time for a nap, trust me.”
Remus didn’t really know how effective detentions were if the teacher left the room, but it really would work for him. So he nodded his head with a smile and turned away and tried not to feel like a shitty father as he got Ms Ellis' classroom. Only to find out he wouldn’t be alone. He didn’t know who the other student was, but he didn’t look too pleasant to be there either.
“Take a seat, Mr Lupin and leave your bag outside,” Ms Ellis told Remus before he had even taken a step into the room. He made his way to the back, only to get a hard look from Ms Ellis so he quickly moved back to the front.
“Now,” Ms Ellis sighed and got up from her seat. She was holding some papers and a plastic box in her hand. She handed Remus a paper before walking to the other guy and giving him the other. “Seeing as you both got your detention on my class you can as well do some assignment now that you’re here”
Remus looked down to the paper and tried not to groan aloud as he read through the ten history related questions. He was lucky if he knew an answer to one of them.
“You have an hour to answer these. I don’t expect perfect answers, but I expect something,” then she offered the plastic box towards the other guy. “Phones, please”
Remus sighed as he dropped his phone to the box, glaring only a little at Ms Ellis who walked to the door.
“See you in an hour, don’t be stupid,” she said walking out with their phones. Remus turned to look at the paper again. It had different questions from different topics and Remus honestly didn’t even understand all of them.
“You have a pen?”
Remus turned to look at the guy who was sitting next to him. He was leaning on his hand with a bored expression.
“No”
The guy let out a laugh and wrinkled the paper into a ball, “Stupid bitch, didn’t even give us a pen,” then he leaned back in his seat and closed his eyes. “Well, her lose, I guess”
Remus hummed as an answer and leaned back too. It would be a long hour, because answering the question would have given him something to do. Now he had nothing, but his thoughts and worrying.
“What did you do?”
Remus turned to look at the guy again, but his eyes were still closed. He opened his other eye to quickly look at Remus.
“I don’t really know. Was being too sassy, I guess”
He laughed again, “I slept, which I’m going to do again. She can give me another detention, all I care”
Remus didn’t bother to answer, but took the paper to his hand and folded it in half. And then again and again until it was a small square. And did that all over again.
He glanced at the clock. Sirius should be at the daycare in a minute. It’s a short walk if nothing happens. It’s getting closer to winter and it could be slippery outside. Something could happen to Sirius before he gets there.
This time Remus actually groaned and threw the paper to the floor.
“Wow, dude. Take it easy umm..”
“Remus,” Remus said and leaned to rest his forehead on the table. This was ridiculous. His overthinking, this whole detention. He didn’t even do anything to earn it.
“Right, Remus. I’m Tommy”
Remus closed his eyes and hoped Tommy would shut up. He wasn’t in the mood for talking. He was in the mood to get the fuck out of here.
“You got other places to be, Remus?”
Remus almost laughed, because Tommy here didn’t actually have no idea how badly he needed to get out.
“You got a girl waiting?” Remus could hear the smirk in his voice and rolled his eyes. Of course that was the first thought in the guy’s mind.
“You’re talking like we are serving in jail and not just in detention,” Remus said instead and raised his head from the table. Tommy smirked and struggled.
“Do you?”
Remus sighed, again.
“No”
“What then?”
“Just.. got better things to do”
Tommy laughed and took the paperplane he had made out of his wrinkled paper to his hand. He threw it to their air and they both watched as it landed on Ms Ellis’ table.
“Don’t we all?”
Remus struggled and glanced at the clock again, “I guess”
45 minutes to go
He could take it
-
Ms Ellis hadn’t been too happy to come back and find neither of them had done what they were supposed to with the paper. And liked even less when Tommy blamed it all on her. Remus didn’t care about the paper or Tommy’s asshole comments to her. The second Ms Ellis sighed and told them they were allowed to leave Remus burst through the door, almost forgetting his bag in the hurry.
He got outside, phone already out ready to text Sirius to know where the two of them were.
“Look who's here, is that your dad, huh? I think it is, yeah.”
Remus whipped his head to the side so quickly he thought he pulled a muscle. But there Sirius was sitting on the one and only bench outside the school building with Teddy sitting on his lap.
“He looks way too worried don’t you think, Tedster?” Sirius kept going, looking down at Teddy on his lap. Remus couldn’t help but look Teddy over. He tried to see if anything seemed different or alarming about him. And then immediately felt bad about it, because Teddy was perfectly fine and smiling at him. With his adorable teeth showing and hands reached out for Remus. Remus walked closer and took Teddy to his arms.
“Hi, pup,” Remus said as he lifted Teddy up to the air in a way he knew made Teddy laugh. “Did you have a good time with Sirius?”
Then he turned to look at Sirius who was looking at the two of them with a fond smile on his lips.
“How did it go?”
Sirius waved his hand around and got up too
“It went fine,” He reassured and then looked at Teddy with amusement. “I mean he did cry a little at first, but to be fair I would cry too if some random kid just kidnapped me,” Sirius said and offered his hand to Teddy who was reaching out for him. Remus tried to keep his thoughts under control. “But then I promised I wasn’t actually kidnapping him so Tedster was like “Okay, bet,” and we were cool,” Sirius gave Teddy an exaggerated smile “Weren’t we? Yeah we were. After we got that under control we went to the small cafe next to the daycare where we ate some baby food, which by the way tasted like shit, but Teddy seemed to like it so who am I to judge,” Remus couldn’t help but laugh as he imagined Sirius tasting the baby food.
“He did end up shitting his pants,” Remus’ eyes widened. Out of all the things, he hadn't thought of the one thing that was most likely to happen. But Sirius clearly saw the panicked look and quickly interrupted his panicking. “But, but- don’t panic! I luckily have experience with these kinds of situations with my cousin's kid so I changed his diaper like the champ I am. And now we are here, because I asked Teddy what he wanted to do and he was like “You’re shit, get me to Daddy,” and again who am I to withhold his right to see his Daddy, so here we are.”
Remus didn’t really know what to say. Now afterwards he felt silly for being so distrustful, because everything went well. So he glanced at Teddy again until looking at Sirius with a lopsided smile.
“Wow, I can’t believe he learned to talk and curse after just spending an hour with you”
Sirius let out a laugh and looked down to his feet. “I just have that kind of positive effect on others”
Remus hummed and then without either of them saying anything they started walking. They walked in silence in the same way they did last night, but this time Remus let himself glance at Sirius from time to time.
Their base wasn’t that quick so it took longer than normally to get to Remus’ house. But before they turned to the street where his house could be seen Sirius suddenly took a hold of Remus’ wrist. Remus turned to look at him only to find out the other boy wasn’t looking at him, but to the ground. His skin had gone white and Remus furrowed his brows.
“Are-”
“I know this is probably ridiculous and you can for sure tell me to piss off and we can just forget this whole conversation,” Sirius said hurriedly and dropped his hold from Remus’ wrist like it was burning his fingers to touch him.
Sirius breathed in and opened his mouth, but no sound came out. Remus was just about to say something himself, when Sirius blurted out.
“Can I kiss you?” he breathed and finally looked at Remus with panicked eyes. “Because I’ve been wanting to kiss you for like, I don’t know a week now. But I can’t read you and don’t really just wanna jump at you out of nowhere so that’s why I’m asking. And this is so dumb and I know that and Teddy is right there and it’s probably like extremely inappropriate to-”
Remus couldn’t help but to interrupt him.
“Are you going to kiss me anytime soon or do I have to wait for much longer?”
Sirius shut his mouth and looked at him somehow even more in panic than earlier. So Remus scoffed with a smile and stepped closer. He moved his hand to Sirius' cheek so he could pull him closer to him.
And then their lips met and Remus tried not to smile too hard, but then he felt Sirius’ lips turn into a smile too and pressed their lips together even more firmly. Sirius’ hand moved to hold his elbow while the other one was pressed to Remus’ chest. Sirius opened his mouth just a little as he pressed firmer to Remus’ who slipped his tongue to Sirius’ mouth.
And way too soon for Remus liking he had to pull off to breath. He rested their foreheads together and closed his eyes.
Or did, until Teddy let out a shriek. Remus groaned and turned to look at his son with raised eyebrows. Sirius let out a laugh and rested his head on Remus’ other shoulder.
It felt right like Sirius was meant to be there. Close to him with that glint in his eyes, looking at Remus and Teddy.
“Well,” he said and turned to look at Sirius as well as he could, but only really saw the top of his head. Sirius hummed and turned his head to the side so Remus could see his face. He was grinning, but at the same time his smile was lazy in a sweet way. Remus couldn’t put his finger to it, but knew he wanted to keep looking at it.
“Well, I’ll definitely want to do that again”
Remus found himself nodding his head and then took Sirius hand to his own, locking their fingers together.
“Would you like to come in?” he asked as he led them both towards the familiar house. Remus knew his dad wasn’t home and wouldn’t be for a long time. On Tuesday’s his dad always went somewhere, but didn’t bother telling Remus where.
Remus didn’t bother with asking either.
He didn’t really have a plan for why he asked Sirius to come in. Usually he hates having friends over, so it’s been years since someone other than he or his dad has even stepped into their house. Still he opens the door for Sirius with his other hand, trying to be smooth with it before stepping in too. Remus walked first to his room and thanked himself for the fact that the room wasn’t actually as much of a chaos as he had feared for a second.
Sirius looked around curiously even though there wasn’t much to look at. Remus on the other hand stared at Sirius and tried to be as subtle and normal as he could in the situation.
Honestly he had no idea what the fuck he was doing. Remus turned to look at Teddy and then decided to act.
“Give me a minute so I can…” Remus gestured to Teddy and Sirius just smiled and nodded his head.
“Yeah, of course,” then he looked to the floor. “I can leave too if you-”
“No,” Remus said and surprised himself with how eager he sounded. “I mean- you don’t have to, I invited you over. I just need to put Teddy down for a nap, you know responsibilities…”
Sirius nodded his head and carefully sat down to the edge of Remus’ bed. Remus grabbed another of the baby monitors from his nightstand and turned both of them on. He glanced at Sirius once more before walking to the living room.
“Okay,” he said more to himself than to Teddy as he laid him down to the makeshift crib he had for Teddy in the living room. “Okay, you’re going to be a good boy and take a nice nap, yeah?” Remus explained to Teddy with an overly cheerful voice. “And daddy is going to go back to our bedroom and well, I don’t even know”
Teddy let out a yawn and Remus nodded his head, leaning down to press several kisses to the small boy’s forehead. “I love you, sweet dreams.”
Then he left, but not before making sure the monitor was on and close enough to Teddy. When he got back to the bedroom Sirius was already looking towards the door with a wide smile on his face.
Remus raised his eyebrows, “What?”
Sirius just struggled, “Nothing, It’s just. Well, I just think it’s cute how you talk to Teddy,” Remus' eyes widened and he glanced toward the nightstand with the other monitor on it. He felt his cheeks grew warmer knowing Sirius heard what he had said.
“I mean I know it’s normal to talk to your kid, but there’s just something about the way you do it,” Sirius kept going and bit his lip to stop himself from smiling wider. Remus walked closer and sat down next to Sirius.
“Sometimes I forget he doesn’t really understand what I say to him,” Remus admitted and let out a laugh. “But he’s really been my only company since, well April, so.”
Sirius looked kind of sad at that. Remus didn’t like it so he shook his head and tried to come up with something else to talk about. But then Sirius was on him, pressing their lips together. Remus let out a yelp, having not been expecting it, but kissed the other boy just as eagerly back. Sirius pressed himself to Remus, his other hand to Remus’ thigh. Remus tried to move to the other side so he could rest against the wall. It was a bit awkward with the both of them crawling on the bed, but still trying to keep up with the kissing. Sirius let out a laugh as Remus’ hands took a hold of the back of his thighs, pulling him on top of him.
Sirius’ hands wandered to Remus’ hair, pulling and tugging. And then he moved lower, his lips moving to Remus’ neck. Remus closed his eyes, his mouth hanging open a bit as Sirius’ sucked on to the spot under his ear. His own hands had moved to rest on Sirius’ waist, loosely holding on to the other boy.
Then Sirius gently bit his skin and Remus couldn’t help the groan that left his mouth.
“Sirius,” he said breathlessly and took his cheeks to his hands, pulling Sirius away from his neck. Sirius looked at him surprised, his eyes wide, lips red and raw.
“Uh,” Remus breathed and rested his head on the wall. “Don’t get me wrong, I really liked all that, but I don’t want to-”
“Oh, no!” Sirius said, interrupting him. Then shook his head quickly. “I mean- uh, sorry I didn’t mean to be so aggressive,” then he looked down to Remus’ chest and mumbled something.
Remus furrowed his brows and bent down a little to see Sirius’ face better.
“What?” he asked and ran his hand up and down on Sirius’ sides where he had without thinking rested them again.
Sirius sighed and looked back to Remus.
“I’ve never had sex.”
Remus didn’t let any reaction show on his face. It wasn’t that Remus had any prejudices about Sirius or of anyone else either. Just because he had a living proof of him having sex doesn’t mean he expects everyone else to be shagging all over.
So he just nodded his head, “Okay, no that’s, that’s fine, really.”
Remus didn’t even know what he had expected to happen. He wasn’t planning on having sex for many various reasons.
Sirius let out a breath and ran his hand over his face before falling to the side to get off of Remus.
“I’m sorry, this is awkward now,” he sighed and sat up, taking some distance between them. Remus immediately shook his head, not wanting Sirius to feel bad or like he had messed up somehow. Remus had been the one to pull away in the first place.
“No, stop, it’s not. It’s cool really we can just sit and talk or-” and at the same time Teddy let out a cry. Remus took the monitor from the table and turned it off. “Or I can do that apparently, give me a second.”
Sirius didn’t say anything as Remus, once again, made his way out of the room. Teddy wasn’t crying anymore when he got to the living room. The small boy had rolled to his stomach and was looking up, like he was waiting for Remus to come and get him.
“Well you didn’t feel like sleeping today, did you?” Remus asked as he picked Teddy up from his armpits. “That’s okay, pup.”
“Um”
Remus turned around and found Sirius standing at the doorway with his bag and jacket already on.
“I think I should get going,” Sirius said and moved his weight from one leg to another. Remus nodded his head and made his way to the hallway behind Sirius.
They stood in silence as Sirius put his shoes on. And for the first time it was awkward. Remus didn’t know what to say and didn’t want to pressure Sirius into talking.
Maybe he should have said or done something else? Maybe inviting Sirius over had been too much?
“Well, see you tomorrow,” Sirius said and gave him a small smile.
“Yeah,” Remus said, it was all he could get out of his mouth. Then Sirius turned to look at Teddy and this time really smiled as he looked at the boy.
“Bye, Tedster,” he said and waved a little.
Remus watched as he opened the door and left. He stood there, staring at the now empty spot in front of him. Then he turned around and let out a groan.
“How do I always fuck up so talentedly?” he muttered as he made his way back to his room.
He was scared he had just ruined a perfectly good friendship. There was a chance things between Sirius would be awkward from now on. They would both be walking on eggshells around each other. Tight awkward smiles here and there and the painful small talk when they both know what happened. James and Peter would wonder what happened and they both would just brush it off with some vague excuse.
Remus closed his eyes and hoped that he would wake up to find out it all had been a dream.
Expect it wasn’t a dream, it was just his damn life.
