Just a stranger with all my secrets

Remus Lupin is the kinda person who loves slow mornings. The ones where you can lay in bed with your eyes closed, hide under the covers with the knowledge of not having any responsibilities.

But the thing was that Remus Lupin didn’t really get those. Or at least not this one, maybe somewhere in another universe he was luckier. His mornings were full of skipped alarms, hushed curses and someone climbing over him repeatedly.

He wasn’t lucky to have relaxing mornings, but more like lucky if he didn’t get an elbow to his ribs.

It was the small privileges.

“Remus”, it wasn’t nice when someone talked straight to your ear at half past five in the morning when you tried to sleep.

“Mm”

“Where are my shin guards?”

He turned around to face the wall. He doesn’t really know why Sirius needs to be the one to sleep next to the wall if he’s the one to who gets to sleep in.

“I don’t know, Sirius. Maybe there where you left them”, he murmured, face pressed to the pillow. Lavender. He cursed Sirius and his heavenly smelling shampoo.

“But I don’t know where that is”, Sirius hissed. He was getting frustrated.

“Well, to me that sounds like your problem”, he said, holding back the smile from forming to his lips. Even though the other boy wouldn’t even see it. Sirius huffed and went looking for his shin guards. He muttered some very Sirius-like insults under his breath.

Sounds like your problem, you know what sounds like your problem. Let me tell you-”

His talking stopped. Now Remus smiled and rolled around.

“Under the bed?”

“Please suffocate on the pillow. I wouldn’t even mind”, he hissed then stomped out of the dorm.

Remus hummed and dreamed about those slow, relaxing mornings where Sirius had his shit together and knew how to be quiet. But it didn’t even take ten seconds for the door to burst open again. Sirius basically ran up to him and flopped down on top of him.

Remus let out a groan.

“I’m sorry, please don’t suffocate on the pillow! I’ll see you later, yes?”

“Mhhm, now go”, he said and smacked Sirius’ ass

-

“I don’t get this”, Marlene said and pushed the textbook in front of her away. Remus glanced at her from his place on the other side of the table, but kept writing with his laptop.

“There’s no other way for me to explain it to you”, Lily sighed and Marlene groaned as an answer. They had spent the last two hours in the campus library studying. The finals were getting closer and closer by the day which meant the four of them spent more and more time sitting at their usual table in the library.

“You just have to get it yourself, babes”, Mary said while scrolling on her phone. She was still enjoying her break that started almost thirty minutes ago. Marlene shot her a dirty look, “It’s easy for you to say you art hoe. You just have to use your natural talent and paint a couple of amazing works”, she groaned again. “Why can’t I just play hockey or something? All I’d need is a pair of abs and my whole future would be settled”

Remus stopped writing and turned to his friends. “They have their majors too, Marls”, he pointed out, but still she was right. Many of the guys on the team had their futures planned and filled with NHL contracts. And maybe it was unfair from time to time, but it’s not their fault Remus had chosen not to be interested in skates and a puck when he was three.

“Yeah you know all about the hockey abs, don’t you Remus?” Mary teased with a smirk on her face. Remus rolled his eyes, “Really Mary, just because I have a hockey player as my roommate? But whatever, you know I’m right”

Because that’s what it is to all their friends. Remus didn’t necessarily hate it. He knows how the hockey world is. There’s very little queer players, at least out ones. So he gets why Sirius wants to keep it as a secret. And not only because of hockey but because of his family too. It’s complicated, so fucking complicated. And yeah it’s not always nice to be the dirty little secret in Sirius life, but he can handle it. Sirius makes it worth it with his pretty silver eyes and perfect lips that smile at Remus whenever they are together.

Sirius overall makes it worth it, and he also knows it’s not forever. But it’s for now and it’s that as long as it needs to be. So even though it sometimes sucks, it makes Remus cry and makes him wanna throw tantrums. But it also makes him happy, makes him smile and laugh so what would be better. Not many things.

“The hockey players choose the easiest majors, because they know they won’t need them in the future”, Marlene pointed out.

“That’s very generazing of you”, Lily pointed out herself. Marlene huffed and turned back to her book, clearly given up with the subject. So they all worked quietly for ten minutes before Mary got bored.

“Are we going to the game today?”

Remus closed his laptop. He decided that he had studied enough. He was well ahead on his schedule so it wouldn’t hurt to take some time off, for now.

“If I have time, I guess”, he said casually. He knows he’ll be there, even if he has schoolwork to do. He goes to every game he can. Marlene chuckled and closed her laptop too. “We all know you’re going to be there with us, Remus”

“I feel like I’m going to skip it tonight”, Lily said without looking at them. She was staring at her laptop very intensively with a frown on her face. “I don’t think this study will let me come if I’m being more specific”

Mary huffed, “Boring”. Lily stuck her tongue out at her.

-

“sorry, don’t have much time between class and going to the rink. James wants to go something through before the game. will you be in the dorm?”

Remus read the text he got from Sirius. He didn’t really have things to do other than studying, but he got that Sirius has a busy schedule. So he just smiled and tapped an answer.

“It’s ok. Yub, I’ll be there… studying. Should I ask if Reg wants to tag along with me and the girls tonight?”

When Sirius didn’t answer right away he put his phone away to focus on the lecture. He glanced at Peter who was next to him, looking like he was about to fall asleep any second. Remus gently kicked his shin under the table. Peter jumped and looked up to the board and then to Remus.

“Fuck”, he muttered and rubbed his eyes. “I can’t wait for the semester to be over, I feel like I’m slowly dying”

Remus chuckled the same time he felt his phone buzzle in his pocket. “I know right, I don’t even know why it’s been so tough compared to last year”, he whispered back.

“said he’s going with Evan. don’t exhaust that pretty head of yours too much, or else i’ll have to be the smart one... see you later x”

“I swear it’s the second year. All the professors want us to suffer”, Peter muttered while he tried to quickly write his notes from where he missed some. Remus just hummed. It really had been a tough year like he just said. He’s done alright, but at the same time it had taken a lot of him to succeed. He really graved for the upcoming holidays.

“You coming to the game?” Peter asked in passing, still focused on his notes. Remus saw how the girl sitting on Peter’s other side glanced at the two of them with a judging look. He shot her an apologising look back. She rolled her eyes and Remus couldn’t help but wrinkle his nose.

“Yeah I’ll be there”, he whispered.

“Don’t jinx it”

-

The dormitory doors and walls were the thinnest things on earth. That’s why Remus could hear the cussing coming from the other side of the door from where he was sitting in his bed, the laptop in front of him. He chuckled and got up to open the door.

“Lost your keys?” he asked the other boy who was digging his bag. Sirius raised his head up and a smile spread on his lips. Remus stepped to the side to let him in.

“Probably under the bed too”, he said and dropped his bag and jacket to the floor, next to the pile of clothes. Remus wasn’t sure anymore if some of the clothes were clean or not. He stepped closer and let Sirius gather him in his arms.

“I still feel kinda shitty that I was an asshole in the morning”, Sirius said as he was resting his head on Remus' shoulder, crouching down a little. Remus chuckled and wrapped his own hands around Sirius’ waist.

“Baby, I literally know you’re the grumpiest in the morning. It’s nothing personal”

Sirius hummed, “Still, think if you had actually suffocated on your pillow. The funeral would have been awful for me to attend”, he let go of him, to look Remus’ in the eyes. “Think about me in the front row, crying because I told you to suffocate”

Remus pursed his lips and ran his fingers through Sirius's hair on his neck. He had the urge to roll his eyes. “Brave of you to think you’d have a seat in the front”. Now Sirius completely let go of him and stepped away and flopped down on his bed. So Remus went to his own bed and closed his laptop. He had been studying since his lecture ended two and a half hours ago. It would do for the day.

“I have forty-five minutes before I have to leave”, Sirius informed from the bed and threw his phone to the side. Then looked at Remus and pursed his lip out. “Why are you so far away? Come here”

Remus huffed but did as he was told. He laid next to Sirius who threw the blanket over the both of them. They usually slept on Sirius's bed. It was a tight fit, but they made it work by sleeping as close to each other as possible

“How was your day?” Sirius asked and ruffled Remus’ hair. It was already all over the place, because Remus wasn’t one to use all different kinds of products to keep it nice and tidy. Even after all the times Mary had told and instructed him.

“It was normal. Lecture, studying not much more”, he wandered off. His days weren’t full of socialising like Sirius’ days were. While the other boy had practices and other things with his team and mates, not to forget about his studies. Remus didn’t have all that. Yes he spends time with the girls and Peter. Sometimes with Sirius and his friends, but mostly he just studies. His parents paid enough for him to even be here so he needed to be grateful and make them proud. And if getting good grades made them proud, then that was it.

“And you ate..?” Sirius carefully asked.

It wasn’t that Remus purposely skipped meals during the day. He just forgets and then brushes it off when he realises he did. Typically he just snacked through the day and in the evenings ate something more filling. On top of that, eating on campus was a lot more expensive than you would think. So it was easier that way too.

When Remus took longer to answer Sirius sighed and sat up.

“Remus-”

“Stop”, Remus said with an uptight voice. “ I just..”

They stared at each other, neither saying anything. It wasn’t like Remus wanted to lie. He did eat a granola bar he found from his bag an hour ago.

“You need to eat Remus, I’m serious about this”, Sirius said and gave him a hard look.

“Aren’t you always-”

“Remus”

Remus sighed and got up from the bed. He wasn’t in the mood for a fight, in fact he wasn’t in the mood for much anymore. He knows that the only reason Sirius asks and tells him off is because he cares, but.. Well it sounds way more ugly when it comes out of someone else's mouth, then when you think about it by yourself.

“I don’t want to or need to have this conversation with you, Sirius”, he said and turned around so he wouldn’t have to look at him. He was more than capable of taking care of himself. He gathered his books and laptop from his bed and stuffed them into his bag.

“That’s not healthy Remus, please”, Sirius pleaded. He could hear how the other boy had gotten up too and was now standing behind him. Remus didn’t turn around.

“Fuck, I know!” he said way too angrily than he had planned. “But what do you want me to do about it, hmm?”

He now turned around to face Sirius, who looked at him with hard eyes. Remus knows yelling at him won’t get him anywhere, because Sirius isn’t going to back off.

“I don’t even have the money to eat at the campus everyday, so what’s the solution here?” he kept going.

Sirius shook his head, “You know that’s not what I’m saying”

“Please inform me then. What is it?”

Sirius let out a frustrated noise. “You fucking skip meals, Remus! You study so much that you fucking forget to eat and that.. That’s- I’m worried, okay? I worry because I don’t want you to end up in burden because all you do is study”

“Well I’m sorry, but we all can’t be some to be NHL stars”, he snapped. “I actually have to study my ass off if I want to be something in the future”

And the second those words leave his mouth he knows he fucked up. He knows that wasn’t fair. The look on Sirius’ face tells him exactly that.

“I see”, Sirius steps back. He gets his bag from the floor. “Maybe I’ll just go, so I don’t interrupt your studying to become something”

Remus tries to walk up to him, but Sirius holds up his hand.

“Sirius I’m-”

“No, no I get it. It’s not like I have worked MY ass off for this my whole life”, his voice was full of bitterness. “I’ll see you at the game”

Sirius opened the door, but stopped before stepping out.

“Or well, don’t bother coming I guess. Would take too much time from your fucking future”

-

“Okay so twenty bucks that James will do the first goal”, Marlene said as she pushed past some other students to get to their usual seats. Mary and Remus followed behind her, but let her do all the pushing and glaring.

“I’m a broke student, even the twenty bucks is a treasure to me”, Mary said. “I bet on Crouch, but if you lose you’ll do my laundry for the next week”

Marlene smirked, “Deal”

“Deal”

Remus sighed and settled back on his seat, trying to make the plastic chairs feel a tad more comfortable. He was feeling like shit. Like uther fucking shit. He was a shitty person for saying all those things to Sirius. Who even says stuff like that? Especially when he knows how much Sirius had done work to be here.

He’s an asshole and he wants to apologise to Sirius.

“What about you, Remus?” He turned his head to the waiting girls. He had completely zoned out. “Don’t bet on Sirius, please”

“I wasn’t going to”, he muttered and looked as James shot the buck to Barty. “I’ll say James, but I won’t make anyone's laundry even if I’m wrong”

Marlene huffed, “Boring”, but Remus again stopped listening because Sirius was on the ice. He always moved so smoothly, like he was born to be on skates. Bet he was, Remus didn’t know. But he enjoyed watching Sirius. The way he skated around, smiled to his teammates, came into a stop next to James to say something. He didn’t look as cheery and happy as he usually did. And Remus knew the reason for that and wanted to bang his head to a wall.

But his favourite part is the one where Sirius looks up to him and smiles. Just for a second, a smile he would definitely miss if he wasn’t waiting for it everytime. But he didn’t do that, not today. Instead James looked at him, because James knows. Of course James knows, he is the only one. Him and Sirius are inseparable. Where Black goes Potter goes too.

James shot him a look. Not an angry one, because he’s James. James never gets angry, more like disappointed. Which is even worse. He looks at Remus with a sad close mouthed smile, but turns back to Sirius who slapped his chest to get his attention.

Remus wants to scream until no sound would come out.

But instead he turns to look at his right as a person sits down next to him in the row. He doesn’t know the girls who smiled at him. He smiled back, but turned to look at Mary on his other side. He doesn’t say anything, just looks at his friends whose body is directed to Marlene who herself is explaining something very vividly. Remus can’t really tell what she’s saying due to all the noise around them, but he can hear her tell things about the other team players.

He sighs and closes his eyes

And as the game starts and goes on Remus can’t even lie and say he’s concentrating on the game. Not with all the thoughts running around his head. Which basically makes him feel even worse, because he should be watching the game and cheering for Sirius and his teammates.

“I have to go to the bathroom”, he informs and just as he’s about to get up people start cheering. But not because of a goal, but the games on a hold and Remus can see the Kiss Cam going through the crowd.

“Sit down, we have to see this!” Mary says and pulls him back to his seat. He sighs and watches as some couple shyly peck each other on the lips afterwards awkwardly laughing. Remus doesn’t get the idea behind Kiss Cam, but guess it’s some funny tradition. Next the camera found two girls who started giggling the second the camera landed on them. The other girl kissed her friend's cheek as the crowd cheered again. Remus was just about to stand up again. He didn’t care about the stupid cam.

Then the camera landed on him. More specifically to him and to the girls sitting next to him.

They both turned to look at each other the same time Remus heard Mary and Marlene laughing on his other side. He tried to shake his head, but the crowd started boo’ing. The girl looked at the screen and then at him and smiled wider. The camera wasn’t moving anywhere. Remus wanted the floor to swallow him whole.

“I think they really want to see us kiss”, the girls said over the noise and moved closer.

“Uh- I don’t know”, Remus said. It wasn’t the girl's fault, but she definitely wasn’t helping.

“Oh c’mon it’s just a kiss”, she laughed. “I’m Sarah by the way”

The crowd started to get impatient with them. But Remus wasn’t planning on kissing the girl next to him. And he didn’t care who’s feeling he hurt with that.

“Yeah great, but-”

He flinched when a loud bang could be heard from the ice. He, as well as many others, turned to see Sirius standing next to the glass. He banged his stick to the glass again as Remus’ eyes widened.

“Back the fuck off!” Sirius yelled and moved his helmet upward to run his hand over his face. Sarah turned to look at Remus who couldn’t help but stare at Sirius. But Sirius turned to the way he knew the cameras were.

“Move the fucking cameras!” he yelled and started skating back to the side as the cameras stopped filming. Remus stared at him with his mouth open, but then felt how Mary poked his side.

“Remus what the fuck was that”, she hissed and peeked at Sarah on his other side. “Why did- Why didn’t you.. What is going on”

He tried to think what to say, but honestly he didn’t even know what the fuck just happened. Sirius just did that… He basically outed both of them. Remus didn’t know if he was supposed to be angry or just.. what? What?

What?

“Me and.. Sirius we”, Remus felt how a lump rose in his throat. He tried to swallow but it didn’t help. It couldn’t do much harm anymore if he just said it.

“We are together”, he said quietly and didn’t dare to look at his friends to see their reactions. Marlene let out a laugh and Remus glanced at her, she yet hadn’t said anything. She quickly covered her mouth with her hand.

“I’m sorry are you… Are you joking?” Marlene asked, mouth hanging open. The game was on again, but neither of them were focusing on that. Remus felt like the whole mood in the arena had somehow switched.

“No”, he said and let out a sigh.

“You are dating him…”, Mary said. He couldn’t tell if it was more like a statement or a question.

“Can we leave I don’t-”, Remus glanced at Sarah who very pointedly tried not to look at him. “I need to get out of here” His friends nodded and collectively all three of them got up, but before Remus could get moving from his seat a hand wrapped around his wrist.

“Hey.. Remus was it?” Sarah said not meeting his eyes. “I’m sorry about that. I didn’t know about you.. I mean if there’s something”, she dropped her hand from his wrist.

“No, don't worry about it”, Remus tried to say as neutrally as he could. “You’re good, no hard feelings”

Sarah tried to smile and he could see how her shoulders seemingly relaxed.

“Oh cool, okay well.. good luck with that”

Remus coughed awkwardly, “Yeah, um.. yeah”, They smiled at each other and then Remus was moving as quickly as he could. He basically sprinted out of the building not waiting to see if his friends followed after.

“Remus”, Mary said as she jogged after him. “We need to hear everything”

Remus sighed and hung his head. He got a feeling this was only the beginning of the chaos that was waiting for him.
