Saturdays with Scorpius

Saturdays were Albus’s favorite day of the week. He loved sleeping in after staying up late the night before, then waking up just before noon. He would often miss breakfast, but thankfully his best friend, Scorpius, was always there to greet him with some kind of delicious, almost sickeningly sweet pastry.

“I brought you back a blueberry scone,” Scorpius said excitedly as he crawled into Albus’s bed, pulling the pastry from his pocket and then tearing it in half. “I’m sorry, I need a little extra study fuel.”

“Yeah, that’s what you always say.” Albus couldn’t help but smile. They had a similar conversation every Saturday, but somehow Albus never grew tired of it.

Scorpius pulled out The House of the Scorpion, a muggle book that they were reading together. Albus had picked it out, presumably because the name had reminded him of Scorpius. He held the book open on his lap as he rested his head against Albus’s shoulder and began quietly reading aloud. Albus shuffled a bit and repositioned himself so that their hands were resting gently against each other’s. He thought about being brave and intertwining his fingers with the other boys’, but he decided against it. He always decided against it.

Like always, Scorpius stopped reading almost exactly an hour later. He could’ve read all day if he wanted to, and Albus probably would’ve let him just for the sake of hearing him speak, but Scorpius insisted on a lunch break when he heard Albus’s stomach growling.

Scorpius carefully closed the book and then placed it safely in his trunk, before happily walking over to Albus and giving him the biggest toothy smile, which Albus couldn’t help but smile back at. He could’ve sworn he saw the other boy blush before they turned to link arms with one another.

The boys sat in their usual spot at the Slytherin table, eating tasty food and chatting to each other about normal things like classes and their families. After their conversation had eventually fizzled out, Scorpius sighed deeply and gulped. “So, I was thinking,” He squeaked as he tugged nervously at his sleeve, finally managing to speak.

“Next weekend is a Hogsmeade weekend and… I was wondering if you would go with me?”

“Why are you even asking? We always go together,” Albus couldn’t help but chuckle at what seemed like a silly question. The realization set in after a few seconds had passed and Scorpius wasn’t laughing. He could feel his cheeks getting hot. “Unless you mean…”

Scorpius started tugging at his sleeve again and broke eye contact, shifting his gaze to his lap. “Yeah. I meant like… together together. With me. You and me together, on a date. I’m sorry, maybe I shouldn’t have asked.”

Albus sat quietly for a moment. He had thought for a while that maybe things were changing between them, but he always brushed it off as him being silly. He didn’t think there was any way that someone as perfect as Scorpius could possibly feel that way about him, no matter how badly he wanted him to.

“I’ll go with you.” Albus said finally. Scorpius’s face brightened as he looked up to meet Albus’s beaming green eyes.

“I brought you a strawberry tart, but we’ll have to take it to-go.” Scorpius said coolly as he snapped and pointed at Albus. Albus chuckled and stood up, then took his half of the tart from his friends’ hand. The boys linked arms again, but it wasn’t long before Albus’s fingers found themselves interlocking with Scorpius’s.

As they walked around Hogsmeade, their fingers still intertwined, Albus could feel his heart warming up in his chest. It wasn’t a unique feeling, but this time seemed extra special because he knew his best friend felt it too. And as he smiled to himself and wondered if anything could be more perfect than this, Scorpius leaned in and kissed him.

Saturdays were definitely Albus’s favorite day of the week.
