A Sirius Mistake
Evie looked between her father and two uncles, confused. She had no idea what they were talking about. Who were the men that were there, and what did they want? Evie walked towards her father and took his hand. Thor looked down at his daughter with a questioning look, “Is something wrong, Petal?”
“Daddy, who are the men that are here?” Evie asked.
Thor smiled at his daughter, “They are two Midgardian wizards that have been searching for you, Petal. Heimdall saw them the other day searching the city for you.”
“Why?” Evie asked.
Loki kneeled in front of his niece, “We are not sure, Niece. Perhaps they want to take you back to your so-called relatives or to the wizard that put you with those terrible people.”
“So, they're wizards?” Evie asked, slightly worried.
“Yes, Sweet One, but you have nothing to fear; their pathetic magic is nothing compared to mine, even with most of it bound,” Loki told Evie with a grin, making Evie feel better.
Evie squeezed Thor's hand, “You won't let them take me away, will you, Daddy?”
Thor reached down and picked up his daughter. He cuddled her to his chest and kissed her head, “Of course not, Petal. Nothing in the Nine Realms will take you away from me,” Thor assured his daughter.
Evie smiled at her father and hugged him tightly. Thor then set Evie down, “Why don't you go with Pepper and Natasha, Little One, while your uncles and I talk to these Midgardians.” Thor suggested.
“Okay, Daddy,” Evie said and then went with Pepper and Natasha to make dinner.
After Evie and the two women left, Thor, Loki, and Tony headed for the elevator, but Steve stopped them before they could enter, “If you don't mind, Thor, I'd like to meet these wizards. Too.”
“Yeah, so would we,” Clint and Bruce added.
Thor thought for a moment and nodded, “My friends, that is fine with me. Come let us see what these Midgardians want.”
Thor, Loki, and the Avengers got in the elevator and made their way to the communal area where Sirius and Remus were waiting for them. While Sirius and Remus were waiting, Sirius made plans to attack the Muggles and force them to give him his goddaughter. Sirius decided that he wouldn't tell Remus as he knew his friend would try to stop him. The minute the elevator doors opened, Sirius whipped around and pointed his wand at the men that stepped out.
“Alright, you bloody bastards, give me my goddaughter, and no one will get hurt,” Sirus bellowed.
“Sirius!” Remus shouted.
“Shut up, Moony; this is the only way.”
Loki rolled his eyes and sighed. With the wave of his hand, Loki turned Sirius's wand into a snake that turned and tried to bite Sirius. Sirius yelped and dropped his wand. Instantly, Loki restrained the two wizards and smiled at them, “Pathetic mortals, do you honestly think you can go up against the might of Asgard?”
Sirius struggled against the restraints while Remus stared at the man in front of him, “Asgard? What do you mean, Asgard?”
Loki smiled and used his magic to don his armor, “I am Loki, of Asgard.”
Sirius and Remus stared at the God of Mischief, wide-eyed, “Loki! We built a shrine to you our fifth year in school,” Sirius said.
Sirius looked between Loki and the blonde man standing next to him, holding a hammer. It didn't take a genius to realize that the other man was Thor, God of Thunder. Sirius's brow furrowed, “I don't understand; why are two Gods holding my goddaughter hostage?”
Thor glared at Sirius, “How dare you suggest that we would be holding Evie against her will!”
“Well, why else would you be holding someone else's child?” Sirius asked.
“Because it is my right as Evie's father to have her with me!” Thor said aggressively.
Sirius gasped, then glared at Thor. He struggled harder against the restraints, “THAT'S NOT TRUE, EVIE IS JAMES POTTER'S DAUGHTER!” Sirius yelled.
“I'm afraid you are mistaken, Mortal. Young Evelyn is indeed my brother's daughter and my niece,” Loki said calmly.
“How can you be Evie's father if Lily was married to James?” Remus asked.
“It was before she married Potter. We were lovers for a time; then, I returned to Asgard. I never knew she became pregnant with my child,” Thor informed Remus.
Remus's eyes widened, “That explains why Lily and James rushed to get married, and they said that Evie was premature,” Remus said, putting the pieces together.
Sirius shook his head in denial, “No, that's not true; Evie looks exactly like James with Lily's eyes.”
Loki shook his head, “Lily and her husband placed a glamour on my niece the moment she was born. I am sure your friend tried to blood adopt her, but there is no way his blood was strong enough to overpower the blood of a God. So, the only thing they could do was hide her appearance.”
“No, I saw Evie after she was born,” Sirius said, still in denial.
Loki raised an elegant eyebrow, “Are you certain of that?”
Sirius thought back to Evie's birth and realized that James and Lily were alone for about three hours; they could have cast the glamour then. Sirius shook his head; he didn't believe what these two beings were telling him. He didn't want to consider it. That would mean that Sirius had nothing left of his brother in all but blood, and Sirius couldn't accept that.
“I don't know why, but you two are lying, and I want my goddaughter back.”
Tony, who had been listening along with the other Avengers, stepped forward, “Actually, I'm Evie's godfather, Mr. Black,” Tony informed Sirius.
“Who the bloody hell are you?”
“Tony Stark, I'm Lily's second cousin. Thor was kind enough to make me Evie's godfather.”
“He has no right! This man is not Evie's father!” Sirius insisted.
Tony sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration, “This is getting us nowhere; JARVIS pull up the paternity test on Evie, please.”
Of course, Mr. Stark. Jarvis answered, frightening Sirius and Remus.
JARVIS decided to print out the paternity test to show the two men instead of projecting the results as he usually would do. He didn't think these men would understand what a hologram was. Once Tony received the results, he walked towards Remus, who seemed to be the more reasonable of the two.
“Do you know what a paternity test is, Mr. Lupin?” Tony asked.
Remus nodded, “Yes, we have those in the Wizarding World.”
“Good. Now, this test was performed in the hospital in London when Evie was being treated for the injuries that she received from that poor excuse of a family that your so-called leader of the light sent Evie to live with,” Tony informed them angrily.
“The Dursleys mistreated Evie?” Sirius asked.
Tony scoffed, “That's putting it mildly. My goddaughter was imprisoned, starved, and physically abused daily. It's a good thing it didn't escalate into anything else,” Tony said.
The others knew full well what that meant. At the thought of that Walrus sexually abusing his daughter, the sky darkened, thunder rolled, and lightning flashed. Thor's eyes sparked with power.
Loki laid a comforting hand on his brother's shoulder, “Calm yourself, Brother. Evie is here with us, and she is safe. Nothing will ever harm her again.”
Thor closed his eyes and took a deep breath. Once he calmed down, the sky cleared. Sirius and Remus looked at each other. If they had any doubt that Thor was the real God of Thunder, that display of power convinced them.
Tony looked at Loki, and Loki dropped the bindings that were holding Remus. Tony handed the document to Remus, and they all waited for him to read the results. Remus read the report three times to make sure he understood it. Every time he read the paper; the results were conclusive; Thor was Evie's biological father.
Remus sighed and looked at his best friend, “It's true, Padfoot, Thor is Evie's father.”
“No! You can't believe their Muggle test, Moony. It's not right.”
Remus put his hand on Sirius's shoulder, “Sirius, Muggle tests are very accurate. They can use blood to do the tests,” Remus explained.
Sirius slumped a little, “But she looks like James,” Sirius said weakly.
“Padfoot, they already explained, it was only a glamour.”
Sirius suddenly stood up tall, fire burning in his grey eyes, “No! I don't believe it, not until I see for myself,” He looked defiantly at Thor, “I want to see Evie, now.”
“Careful, Mortal, you are in no position to demand anything,” Loki said, taking a threatening step towards Sirius and producing two knives out of thin air.
At that moment, Bruce decided to intervene, “Maybe it would be for the best that they see Evie. It will relieve their anxiety, Thor.”
Thor thought for a moment, then nodded. He looked at Loki, and Loki nodded, then vanished. Loki appeared in the kitchen, where he watched his niece happily cooking with Pepper and Natasha. Evie was laughing at the stories that Pepper was telling her about her Uncle Tony. Loki cleared his throat to get their attention. Evie turned around and ran towards her uncle.
“Uncle Loki! Have you come to help us with dinner?” Evie asked.
“Not this time, Sweetling. Your father has requested that you join him in the lounge,” Loki informed her.
Evie's smile dropped slightly, “To meet the two wizards?” She asked.
“Yes, Little One. They were friends with your stepfather, and they are concerned for you. The mortals want to make sure you are being treated well.”
Evie furrowed her brow, “Why?”
“One of them claims to be your godfather,” Loki informed the little girl.
“But I have Uncle Tony. Can I have two godfathers?”
“Magically? No, you cannot. Your mother and stepfather may have chosen this wizard, but your magic chose Stark.”
“Good, because I only want Uncle Tony, though I will meet these wizards since they were friends with my mother and stepfather,” Evie said.
Loki smiled at his niece, then looked at Natasha and gave her a pointed look that she understood, “Come on, Evie, let's get you cleaned up. You and I will meet the boys in a little while.” Natasha said, then offered her hand to Evie.
As soon as Evie and Natasha left, Pepper turned to Loki, “Do you anticipate a problem, Loki?”
“Nothing we cannot handle, Ms. Potts. One of the wizards seems a bit unstable, and I think he may do something rash. It would be better to have the Spider there just in case a woman's touch is needed.”
“And an extra gun,” Pepper concluded.
“Precisely.”
Now that Loki explained, he returned to the lounge and told them that Evie would be along shortly. Sirius began to get more excited; he couldn't wait to see James's mirror image. Sirius had asked Loki to release him from his bonds, but Loki refused; Loki didn't trust either wizard, but he trusted the dark-haired man less.
The wizard seemed to be a bit crazed and was obsessed with Evie's stepfather. Loki wasn't sure if this man genuinely cared for Evie or if he only cared for her because she resembled his dead friend. They would soon find out.
Tony, who was sitting with the other Avengers, was thinking the same thing. It wouldn't surprise him if this man, Sirius Black, flipped out when he saw that Evie looked like Thor and not James Potter. He only hoped that Sirius didn't say anything that would get him killed by Thor, but from what Tony had seen so far, this wizard didn't think before he spoke; and Tony knew that whatever Sirius was going to say, it was going to devastate his niece. Tony made eye contact with Steve, Clint, and Bruce and saw that they were all on the same page. If this man hurt Evie, he would learn why the Avengers were Earth's Mightiest Heros.
A few more minutes passed, and then they heard JARVIS announce that Evie was on her way up with Natasha. Sirius and Remus looked at the elevator door expectantly. When the door opened, a beautiful red-haired woman with piercing green eyes walked out. Sirius and Remus gawked at her for a moment; she so enthralled them that they didn't notice the little blonde girl holding her hand. Finally, Sirius looked down at the little girl and frowned; he looked at Thor.
“I thought you said that Evie was coming,” Sirius said.
Thor turned and saw his daughter; he beamed at her and held his hand out towards Evie. Instantly, Evie let go of Natasha and ran towards her father. Taking Thor's hand, she stood next to him, feeling a little nervous about meeting the two wizards. Evie smiled at the two men but then shied away when she noticed that the dark-haired man was glaring at her father and then at her. Evie tensed and hid slightly behind her father.
Thor glanced down and gently squeezed Evie's hand, “Do not be frightened Petal. Remember, you are a princess of Asgard.”
Evie looked up at her father and nodded. She stood a little taller and came out from behind Thor. Letting go of Thor's hand, she made her way towards the brown-haired man with a scar across his face first. She curtsied in front of him as her grandmother had shown her, “Good afternoon, sir, I am Evelyn Thorsdotter. It is nice to meet the man who knew my mother and stepfather.”
Remus was taken aback when he saw Evie. She looked nothing like James and Lily; this little girl looked precisely like her father. Gone were the green eyes, and in their place were a pair of stunning sapphire eyes. Her dark curls that looked like James's was now replaced with golden blonde hair that cascaded down her back. But the more he looked at Evie, the more he could see a slight resemblance to Lily. The shape of the eyes, lips, and ears looked precisely like Lily. With a heavy heart, Remus realized that this was indeed his cub and that Thor was not lying.
Remus smiled at the little girl, “Hello, Evelyn, you may not remember me, but I'm Remus Lupin, and you're right; I did know your mother and s-stepfather,” Remus stuttered the last part.
Evie stared at Remus for a moment; she studied his face carefully. Evie had a feeling she knew this man, but she wasn't sure. But when Remus gave her a loving smile, it suddenly came to her. Evie smiled, and her blue eyes lit up.
“Moony?”
Remus was startled that Evie remembered him, but his smile only widened, “That's right, cub, I'm Moony.”
Evie beamed at Remus and was about to run towards him to hug him when she felt Loki's magic restraining him. She looked at Loki, “Uncle, would you free him, please?”
Loki looked skeptically at Remus then back at Evie. His eyes fell on Thor, and Thor nodded; Thor felt that this man was more trustworthy than the other, but he gave Loki a pointed look. Loki understood, be ready just in case. Loki waved his hand and released Remus. The minute Remus was released from his magical bonds, he kneeled and held his arms out; Evie instantly ran into his arms and hugged Remus tightly, “Oh, Moony! I thought I'd never see you again!” Evie cried.
Remus hugged Evie tightly and rubbed her back comfortingly. While he held her, Remus breathed in her scent and knew without a doubt that this was his cub, “It's alright, cub, I'm here now, and I'm not leaving,” Remus looked at Thor, “That is if your dad lets me stay.”
Thor crossed his arms, his muscles bulging, “We shall see, wizard.”
Remus nodded.
At that moment, Sirius decided to open his big fat mouth, “Come on, Moony, you can't believe this bullshite! That is not Evie! She looks nothing like her parents,” Sirius glared at Thor, “Where's Evie, you bastard? That's not her; this is an imposter. What have you done to my goddaughter?” Sirius shouted.
Evie looked at the other man and realized that it was Padfoot; she walked towards him and stood before him, “Padfoot, it's me, Evie,” Evie informed him with a hopeful smile.
Sirius scowled at Evie and growled, “Don't call me that, you imposter! You're not my Evie! My Evie looked like her mum and dad; you look nothing like them! They're trying to pass you off to get Evie's inheritance; you probably killed her!” Sirius began to run, “YOU ARE NOT MY GODDAUGHTER!” Sirius spat at the little girl who was close to tears.
Several things happened simultaneously; Thor growled and lunged for Sirius, grabbing him by the neck and hoisting him into the air, then slamming him into the wall with enough force to dent it. The Avengers aimed their weapons at Remus and Sirius, ready to fire on Thor's order, Natasha instantly gathered a crying Evie into her arms, trying to comfort her, and the bond that Sirius had with Evie as her godfather was severed completely and was passed to Tony.
Sirius gasped when he felt the bond with Evie shatter. He looked at the little girl who was sobbing in Natasha's embrace and realized his blunder, “Oh, Merlin, what have I done?! Evie, Evie, I'm sorry I didn't believe you!” Sirius croaked.
Thor glared at the despicable man that hurt his daughter; Thor's grip on Sirius's throat tightened, “How dare you! HOW DARE YOU SAY SUCH THINGS TO MY DAUGHTER!” Thor roared. The lights flicked, and thunder boomed outside, “I should rip out your spine for hurting her.” Thor said in a deadly voice.
“I didn't mean to. I thought you were lying; I'm sorry,” Sirius was barely able to get out.
Tony furiously marched towards Sirius, his repulsor ray trained on the wizard, “And you think that saying that and apologizing is going to fix everything?! You devastated my goddaughter, and if Thor doesn't kill you, I will. Who's going to miss someone as pathetic as you anyway?”
A whirring sound was heard as Tony's repulsor ray powered up. At that moment, Evie wiggled out of Natasha's embrace; she wiped her tears and ran towards her father and uncle, “Daddy, Uncle Tony, don't hurt him! Pad- I'm mean Sirius may not like me, but that doesn't mean you should kill him. Let him go, Daddy, please.”
Thor glanced at his daughter and saw the sincerity in her eyes. He closed his eyes, debating whether or not he should listen; in the end, Thor acquiesced to Evie's plea, but not before slamming Sirius painfully into the wall again. He dropped Sirius like a bag of potatoes. Sirius rubbed his throat and gasped; he looked at Evie with adoration in his eyes. “Thank you, Evie,” Sirius said, then tried to hug her, but Evie stepped back, and Thor stepped in the way.
“I didn't do it for you, Mr. Black; I did it for my father and uncle. I don't want your blood on their hands. I also did it for Moony, you're his friend, and I don't want to hurt him, but I don't ever want to see you again,” Evie said coldly, her eyes sparking like Thor's.
Sirius was taken aback, “No, Evie, please, I love you; you're my goddaughter.”
“Not anymore. You see, I felt it when what little bond we had broke when you declared I wasn't your goddaughter, and I'm glad. My Uncle Tony will be a better godfather than you could ever be. Now get out.”
Sirius's heart broke at seeing the hatred in Evie's eyes directed towards him. He knew she was right, and he royally fuck up. With sad eyes, he motioned towards Moony, “Come on, Moony, let's go.”
“No, I want my Uncle Moony to stay. That is if it's okay with you, Uncle Tony, and if you want to, Moony,” Evie said.
Tony looked at the other man, then shrugged, “Yeah, why not? Only on one condition, you have got to let me take you shopping; we need to get you out of the '70s.”
Remus looked at Sirius, who sighed and nodded. Remus turned to Evie and smiled, “I accept.”
“Thank God. JARVIS, take his measurement and order Mr. Lupin a new wardrobe.”
Right away, sir.
“Who was that?” Remus asked.
“That was JARVIS, Moony; I'll explain later,” Evie told him. Then she turned towards Sirius, “Weren't you leaving?”
Sirius sadly nodded. Loki smirked, “Allow me to assist you,” Loki waved his hand, and Sirius disappeared. He was dumped unceremoniously onto the street outside of Stark Tower. Sirius looked up at the Tower, and with tears in his eyes, he bid his goddaughter and best friend a silent goodbye; then, he put his head down and blended into the crowd and was gone.
