October 2,1972
Hogwarts
The first month at Hogwarts flew by, with the brand new introduction to the Wizarding world Grace was in awe of everything it had to offer. She was especially interested in potions, she had always been very good at science at school so it was refreshing to be able to apply the same concepts into potions but get a much cooler result. Regulus had enjoyed his first month away from home,he opened up to the reality he would not have his mother breathing down his back all the time, he took a liking to his defense against the dark arts class, especially because Grace sat next to him. They became fast friends, when Grace felt homesick and couldn’t get a hold of Lily she’d find herself sitting alone under the tree by the lakes and within a few minutes Regulus would show up with a small bag of whatever he could snag from dinner and he would sit and listen to her talk until she felt better. He enjoyed her company, his roommates were fun and he hated to admit that although Sol and Tiberius could be slightly annoying they were always making up some stupid game to play at night dragging him and Snape in and it was always fun, but Grace, she had been different. He wasn’t the only one to notice how some of the slytherins treated her because she was a muggle born, he knew that she could hear everything Posie would say about her at night to Dora, she would pretend to be asleep as they openly spoke about her in their beds.
“She’s a know it all Dora, she spends her free time reading up on the classes were already in, she makes the rest of look like idiots.”
“She’s just smart Posie, maybe if you spent more time studying instead of eyeing Regulus you’d know the answers in class.”
“She spends most of her time with Regulus and she’s a mud blood, she shouldn’t know more than us, what’s he even doing with her?”
“Don’t call her that Posie”
“It’s what she is.”
“You know they’re just friends, you know what his family is like.”
“Whatever but watch Dora she’ll take your spot in Slughorns club 6th year if you’re not careful.”
A mud blood. Grace wasn’t quite sure what the word meant, or what Posie had meant about Regulus’s family but she decided knowing would just hurt her. She never asked Regulus about his family, he was always being mistaken for Sirius by teachers, and he would always hide the letters he received from home, it was a sensitive subject and if she asked, Regulus would be too nice and answer her anyway.
“Oye Grace, how’d you make it blue, mine's still purple.” Regulus tugged on her sleeve causing her to crush up her dragon shells harder.
“Regulus! You can’t do that, if the shells are too fine they won’t cause the proper reaction!” Grace scrapped up the shells and tossed them into her cauldron making the contents inside bubble up with a smile.
“Sorry, sorry, but look at yours and look at mine” he whined staring down at his own potion that was still a dull purple.
“The water Reg, you forgot the water.” She sighed and handed him a small vile with water, “You wouldn’t have forgotten it if you read the steps in the book.” He could see the small smile creep across her face, she liked when she was right especially when it was school related it gave her a sense of pride that reassured her she belonged at Hogwarts.
“Sorry professor Evans” laughed Regulus rolling his eyes and adding the water to his cauldron.
“Oh shut it.” She blushed as Professor Slughorn came up their table.
“Perfect brew Miss Evans, as for you Regulus, i expect average from your brother, not you” he sighed moving along. Grace turned to look at Regulus who’s grey eyes dulled at Slughorns words.
“I think you’re doing great Reg.” Whispered Grace wrapping her arm around Regulus giving him a small hug.
“Thanks” he smiled at her and added the last few ingredients to his cauldron.
October 12,1972
Hogwarts
“Grace!” Lily’s voice echoed down the hallway followed by her arms wrapping around Grace’s waist. “Finally, i never see you” Lily let go of her sister but grabbed her hand and held it as they talked.
“Hey Regulus” Remus’s voice came from behind Lily and Grace watched as he made a small wave towards them.
“This is Remus, he’s one of my friends, Remus this is Grace, my little sister.” Lilly gestured towards Grace and Remus extended his hand towards her. Grace could feel herself blush a little when she took his hand.
“Hi, pleasure to meet you” she smiled
“You too!” He gave her a soft smile and let go of her hand.
“Where’s Sirius?” Regulus had his eyes glued to the hallway expecting his brother to come around the corner.
“Detention” responded Lily rolling her eyes.
“What? For what?” Asked Grace before Regulus was given the chance.
“Well we have defense against the dark arts with the slytherins, including Snape-”
“And Sirius was trying to show off and hexed Severus and his nose was well enlarged, and then Sev got mad and hexed Sirius but missed and hit James and well then they all started hexing each other and then eventually somebody knocked over a candle and the rug caught on fire.” Lily hadn’t taken a breath since she interrupted Remus and started to turn bright red.
“End of story, there was a lot of hexing.” Sighed Remus patting Lily on the back.
“I see.” Said Grace as she tried to hold back her laughter at the situation.
“It’s not funny Grace.” Lily’s color had balanced out “I swear James thinks he’s untouchable”
“Just wait until his quidditch win, you guys are coming to the game right?” Asked Remus looking at Grace.
“Yea, we’ll go, tell Sirius i say hi.” Smiled Regulus,“C’mon Grace were gonna be late.” He watched as Lily hugged Grace once more and walked off with Remus.
“You can laugh now.” Said Regulus looking at Grace who burst out laughing at his approval.
“You gotta admit its a little funny, his nose is rather large as is.” Laughed Grace
“Woah there, didn’t know little miss Evans could be so mean!”
“It’s not mean, I’m just pointing out an observation.” They both started laughing imagining Severus holding his enlarged nose.
“Oh yea that’s definitely what it is.” Regulus couldn’t help but smile as he watched Grace’s hazel eyes flutter with laughter.
“You’re the one who’s gonna have to deal with Sev’s whining later.”
“Oh bloody hell you’re right.” Regulus stopped laughing remembering Severus was his dorm mate.
Boys Dormitory
“Bloody fucking Black!” Severus roared as he stormed into their dorm room holding his nose and rushing straight to the bathroom which was locked. “Open the damn door Zabini.”
Tiberius’s eyes darted to Regulus who sat up from his bed.
“What did you do?”whispered Tiberius to Regulus from across the room.
“Nothing, he’s not mad at me.”sighed Regulus leaning back onto his pillow.
“Well then who is he mad at” asked Tiberius walking over to Regulus’s bed and splaying his body over it.
“Sirius” sighed Regulus as the door to the bathroom unlocked.
“Bloody hell Snape whats up with your face?”laughed Sol drying off his hair with his towel.
“Sirius Black is what’s up with my face” groaned Snape wiping off dried blood from his nose. “Fuck your fucking brother!”yelled Snape at Regulus.
“What did he do?”asked Tiberius, granting him a punch in the arm from Regulus.
“Bloody hexed me in the middle of class, expect he did it wrong and now i have a bloody nose and detention because i hexed him back in self defense, i had to clean out every potion vile while Sirius and James polished bloody quidditch trophies together, they deserve a better punishment than that shit.”
“Then give it to them.”whispered Tiberius
“What are you on about Nott?”said Snape eyeing Sol.
Girls Dormitory
“Grace guess what!” Aris squeal was followed by a sudden weight dropped onto her bed, before she could even respond Ari was unwrapping a small note in her pocket.
“Dear Arizona, you’ve made my days here so much brighter, would you like to accompany me for lunch next Saturday by the lake? Sighed Tomas Scammander.”
Ari proudly read out her letter to Grace.
“ A date? We’ve been at school for like a month!”said Grace taking the letter from her friend's hand.
“So? He’s so cute and so sweet and he-”
“A hufflepuff” interrupted Posie, “and a half blood”
“God, so what Posie, are you jealous no one’s asking you out?said Ari rolling her eyes.
“No, I’m not jealous, I’m just pointing out the obvious.”sneered Posie shutting the curtains around her bed.
“It’ll be fun Ari” smiled Grace, “Now come here, tell me all about Tomas!”she said as she pulled back her blanket so Ari could join her.
“Wait, i wanna know too!” Dora pushed Grace’s curtains back and climbed into the bed with them.
“Dora!” Posie screamed from her own bed.
“I’ll be there soon”screamed back Dora as she cast a silencing spell around Grace’s bed.
“When did you learn that spell?”asked Grace
“Older brother, now Ari, tell us everything!”
