Chapter 5
Lily’s POV
Potions is the best in Lily’s opinion. Maybe it’s because it’s her best class, or maybe it’s because she’s partnered with Marlene. Either way she was in her element and every one knew that. As Lily mixed and waited for it to turn a sickly green color she can feel eyes on her.
“You know you can’t avoid them forever “
Marlene says softly beside her as she’s sketching a record player with some records against it . Lily shakes her head adding in powdered moonstone for her batch of Drought of Peace.
“I’m not avoiding them, we just haven’t crossed paths yet!”
Marlene chuckles handing Lily a few porcupine quills and shakes her head.
“That’s bullshit lil and you know it, you almost knocked over a group of first years when Sirius just looked at you last week”
She’s not wrong. It’s been almost a month since she’s talked to the boys, after the incident in the hall Lily decided it would be best to not get them involved. Avoiding them wasn’t part of it until all James could talk about was the mystery voices. Lily would rather him asking her out again then hear about the voices.
Lily also concluded she didn’t want to put Sirius’s life in danger again. She saw his face when he was called a “blood traitor” he doesn’t need more people turning their nose up at him.
To keep her boys safe she needs to step away.
“I told you Mar, it’s for their safety they don’t need to be wrapped up in whatever this is”
Marlene sighs and looks over at Sirius and James who are arguing about what goes in. Remus is stirring in his cauldron while slapping Peter's hands away gently every time he tries to help. They all look tired, like they’ve been up for days, which they have been. Marlene would never tell Lily this but they have been staying guard outside The girls dorms for weeks.
They will protect their family even if it kills them and no matter what Lily likes to say she is their family.
“I know what you told me Lily but I’m telling you, you need to let them in. They won’t trying until they do”
Lily glances at her before looking at the boys.
“They look just fine to me”
Lily says without taking her eyes off them.
“Just go talk to them Lily, your torturing them”!
Lily sets her spoon down
“You won’t let it go unless I do it right?”
Lily asks and Marlene shakes her head no. Lily rubs her hands on her jeans before walking over to the boy’s on the side of the room.
“Hey guys”
Lily says looking into Peter and Remus’s cauldron
“You should add just a few more scoops of moonstone “
Remus snorts softly before taking her advice
“Good to see you to evens”
Remus says, wrapping his free arm around her shoulders. Sirius and James are look at Lily and Remus before looking back down at their cauldron
“Look I’m really sorry I just.. I didn’t want you guys to get hurt. I saw the way Sirius’s face fell when they brought up.. “ she pauses and shakes her head “I just didn’t want to see you suffer because of me “
Lily says, looking down at her feet. She heard shuffling before she’s brought into a very tight hug, the smell of leather cologne hit her first. Sirius lifts her head up from his chest
“We’re going to suffer more if you don’t let us in”
He says and brushes some hair away from her face. Lily hears more shuffling before she’s crushed in a group hug.
“Thank god we’re talking again, I can’t handle not talking to you”
Peter says into her hair as he squeezes her.
“We’re gonna figure out this mystery together “
James says confidently. For the first time Lily felt like she could actually figure out who the hooded figures are and why they are coming after her.

That night Lily and the boys were crowded over the common room table with the map spread out and scrolls for notes on everything they know so far
“Okay so they are blood purist, probably someone from one of the old families “
Sirius says as he taps a quill against the table
“Okay, so who do we know that’s old fashioned like that?”
Peter asks, stuffing some chips in his mouth, Lily chuckles softly making a note to get him more chips.
“There are 28 family’s where everyone comes from in one way or another” Remus says without looking up from the table as he writes stuff down on a scroll.
“The Abbotts, The Avery’s The Blacks, The Bulstodes, The Burks, The Carrow’s, The Crouches, The Fawley”
Remus trails off as he tries to remember them all
“The Flints” Peter chimes in
“ The Gaunts, The Greeengrasses, the Lestrange’s, The Longbottoms, The McMillan “
James continues as Remus is frantically scribbling
“The Malfoys, The Notts, The Olivanders, The Parkinson’s..”
Sirius trails off counting on his fingers
“The Prewett’s, the Rosier, and the Rowle”
Remus finishes. Lily sighs, running her fingers through her hair, tapping her own quill against the table.
“Okay so who is the most likely to do something “
Lily asks looking up at the boys and they look between each other.
“Probably the Malfoys, the Blacks, and the Lestranges. They’re usually the ones In charge “
Sirius says finally circling the family names on Remus’s parchment.
“But we can’t count out the Notts, the GreenGrass’s or the Parkinson’s. The Black and the Malfoy families have known to be close to them”
Remus says, adding to Sirius as they both began to pace.
“Okay, could we ask someone? See if they’ve seen them acting strange?”
Lily asks and James shrugs looking up at Sirius
“You could talk to your cousin”
He suggests and Sirius pauses
“She would never talk to me. I’d have an easier time breaking out of Azkaban then getting any information out of her”
Peter chokes gently on his chips and Lily rubs his back
“What about The Longbottom’s?”
Peter suggests after he recovers
“Graduated last year, we could OWL him and see if he’s heard anything “
Sirius nods and sits back down
“We’ll get started on OWLing people, you both keep an ear out”
Remus says pointing to Lily and Peter
“If anything happens you let us know immediately Lily I mean it”
James says standing up to look at her
“Please “
He pleads, grabbing her arm gently,Lily nods silently. They stare at each other almost like they are the only ones in the room.
“Guys if your going to eye fuck each other please go in the other room”
Sirius cuts in laughing and Lily turns away blushing. Lily hears a thud and a groaning, assuming that James threw something at Sirius.
“Alright guys I think I’m going to call it a night”
Lily says picking up her bag and shoes
“I’ll see you in the morning “
She says quickly before running out of the common room. She sighs gently once she makes it to the safety of her bedroom. She smiles softly before tossing her shoes and bag to the side flopping on her bed.
“Maybe this year won’t be a total disaster. “
Lily says out loud before falling into a dreamless sleep.
She has no idea how crazy her year will be.
