New beginnings
LENA
Lena stepped into the top floor penthouse holding her phone in one ear and a toddlers hand in the other. The apartment was bare and the air was chilly. She quickly hung up on the board member to wrangle the toddler a safe distance away from the door so that the movers could bring in the furniture that was once at her shared home in Metropolis. The baby girl wiggled in her arms but Lena held firm.
The furniture, pictures, and this baby was all that she had left of Jack. She watched as the movers set down the couch. The same couch they would sit on after spending too much time in the garage. Jack was her best friend, no they weren't in love. The real world isn’t like the fairy tales. They were friends. A few too many cocktails, a drunken hookup between best friends, and the next day a drunk driver T boning Jack's old Ford
It wasn’t til a month later when Lena was trying to drink herself to death on that very couch that she realized her period had not yet arrived. Seven tests later and every single bottle of single malt was down the bathroom drain.
Lily was Lenas pride and joy. She was the mini version of Jack, and while that should hurt her it only brings her peace. Lena loved being a mom. She had fears and doubts all pregnancy that she would end up like Lilian, but when they place Lilibeth in Lenas arms it's like the world halted and Lena couldn't care less if it started again.
Once the movers have placed the last boxes Lena walks them to the door and gives them a tip far bigger than necessary. Lily, having missed her nap that morning in favor of watching the movers a safe distance away in her mothers arms, was crashing fast. Lena grabbed the container of toddler safe take away and warmed it up in the microwave. Micro plastics be damned Lilly was all Lena when she was tired and that was not a match up Lena was prepared for after moving hours away to National City.
She had no plans of moving out of Metropolis. That was the home Jack saw last, that was where she brought Lily home to, but just like always Lex had a way of fucking that up. Lena never understood his obsession with Superman, but just like he fucked up her life, he also killed hundreds failing to kill one.
Lilly had Lena's last name, the public believed Lena was evil too. By extension her 20 month old was evil. Death treats for both mom and baby piled up, Lena had to take over Luthor Corp, it was her daughters if she wanted it. Lex had a soft spot for Lily, Lily's the reason he felt the need to kill the supers, so his niece was safe. If Lena didn’t take Luthor Corp it would go to an old white man who would run her daughters empire to the ground, more than her uncle did.
Lily ate quickly and Lena drew the bath water. Once Lily was finished she was lotioned and in her PJs. It was too late to build her crib so Lena let the baby crawl onto the mattress and lay with her. Tomorrow Lena had a board to face, a baby to take care of, and find a way to get on the super's good side. But for now she held her daughter close and drifted to a dreamless sleep.
KARA
Kara could not stop yawning. She usually was never this tired, that’s what made her such a great assistant to Cat Grant because she was so quick to keep up. However, the night before she had duties no one else could do. She had to be Supergirl. Kara loved being Supergirl, but that was Kara Zor-el, Kara Danvers was unsure of what she loved. She had a degree in Journalism of course but she had spent the last two years at CatCo being a personal assistant to the founder and CEO Cat Grant. She wasn’t growing and she felt stuck. No one cared about Kara Danvers but Supergirl, oh how the city screams her name.
The clock finally reaches 5 and Kara is finally allowed to go home. She loves her home, the exposed brick and the plant in every corner. It’s all she could afford on her salary, she would have more than she would know what to do with if she went under payroll as supergirl but she doesn’t work for the government. Kara’s Chinese takeaway is sitting on her front step when she gets home. Most days she can barely afford to feed herself, her metabolism is far too quick and she has bills to pay so most days she’s still hungry by the time she is done with her dinner.
She flops on her couch and turns on the tv. It is on a random channel but she doesn't mind she puts it on more so she's not alone with her own thoughts. Those have been scary lately so the louder the outside is the better.
Kara used to not be like this, at first she was only kara then that stupid plane crash and the need to help others led her here. She wasn’t sent to Earth to be a hero; she was only meant to protect her baby cousin. He was already a man by the time she arrived and she was forced to find a new purpose in life. What that purpose is however, she still can’t figure out.
Kara, to put it in one word is lonely. Her sister Alex works for the government and used to be over all the time, but now she has a girlfriend and there's only so much one person can take of being the third wheel before they snap. Kara feels like she can never find the right person because once they know about her other identity she is no longer Kara to them she's Supergirl.
Kara finishes her dinner and puts her plate in the sink. She has spent the last 24 hours on her feet between her two jobs. Without thinking she pulls off her pants and crawls into bed, she still has to be up early to welcome her caped cousin into the city.
