Alleys? Goblins? Inheritance? Oh My!

Draco wasn’t quite sure what to think. His father had always taught him of the inabilities of muggles; how they were little more than the scum of the Earth with their lack of magic making it impossible for them to achieve anything. But that day, he had been proven wrong; Draco had apparently barely scratched the surface of what muggles were capable of. Merlin, they could use magic! Muggles could use magic! But as surprising as the revelations regarding muggle capabilities were (even without using magic), nothing was more surprising to him than his mother’s behaviour. He had never seen her act that way around the house or anywhere else father brought her, and while she smiled, compared to that day, it seemed far more forced than actually happy. If he were to be honest with himself, his mother’s behaviour around his father compared to Lord Evans… well, that’s why he was walking to her office (she wouldn’t let his father manage the house Black accounts, which she had been given control over when he was 3 and Arcturus Black passed away). Reaching the door, Draco gave a short rap on the wood, entering when granted entrance.

"Draco, how can I help you?" his mother asked in the slightly warmer tone she used when talking to him.

"I… I had a question about Lord Evans… and father." His mother was silent for a moment after he asked.

"… What did you want to ask?"

Draco took a deep breath. He had been thinking about this since he had woken up the day after their visit to Evanton Park.

"Do you hate father… and were you and Lord Evans together once?"

The silence that fell in the room was deafening and almost unbearably long. Draco waited until his mother picked up her wand and waved it into the air, before gesturing for him to sit down in the chair across from her.

"Draco, you know I refuse to lie to you, so…" his mother let out a tired sigh (Draco guessed that she probably despised having to answer this question), "yes, I do hate your father… and yes, I was once in a relationship with... not only Rei, but Akari as well."

Even though he was almost certain that this would be the answer, it still hurt to hear admitted. What could have possibly made his mother hate his father? Why didn't she marry Lord and Lady Evans? His mother let out another sigh when he voiced these questions, though this one was sadder… more pained.

"… you should've had an older sister; did you know that?"

Draco shook his head in surprise. What, no! He hadn't known that at all!

"She would have turned 10 this year… but she didn't get a chance to be born… I barely even got a chance to name her."

Draco was silent at the admission. He noticed tears beginning to prick at his mother's eyes. Would she have been heiress to the Malfoy house?

"She wouldn't have been the Malfoy heiress," his mother answered the unspoken question, "she wouldn't have even been a Malfoy in the first place… she would have been an Evans."

He was shocked! This didn't make any sense! If mother was pregnant with Lord Evans' child, why had she married his father?

"I didn't choose to marry Lucius. I was forced into a betrothal with him when I was about 2 months pregnant. I was sent off to him not long after- the very next day, really. Your father's first action with his control over me… was to me was to bring me to the Dark Lord."

Draco had a suspicion on where this story was going and he didn't like it; his father had told him repeatedly how great the Dark Lord was, but now that Draco thought about it, he had never told him why the Dark Lord was so great. Sure, their goals were mentioned, but his father never approached the topic of their actions.

"Voldemort-" and wasn't that a surprise, not only was there no worry at all when using the Dark Lord's name, but pure venom, "-used the Cruciatus on me… and killed my daughter in the process."

It was at this point where Draco could do nothing but approach his mother and provide her the biggest hug he was capable of giving while she cried her eyes out. He found himself increasingly uncomfortable as the things he saw as normal began to take a far more sinister perspective. His parents' separate rooms was no longer some kind of respect of privacy, but rather his mother wanting to be nowhere near his father. His mother's controlled and icy expression falling into the position of her hatred for his father and the rest of the death eaters who stood by and allowed her to lose her daughter. So many things he had never tried to understand the hidden meaning of… that didn't sound very Slytherin of Draco, much to his personal displeasure. What's more… this story had one far more important aspect that he could take advantage of; his father had committed line theft.

Draco found that he could no longer care for his father, for he was no longer the man he thought he was, and began to mentally plan a way to get Lucius Malfoy away from his mother… permanently.

----____--------____----

Harry eyed the fireplace with distrust, he was supposed to… walk in it? Did he mishear?

"It's weird, I know. If I'm being completely honest with you, I've never considered the magical world as being the exact pinnacle of common sense… though to be fair, this method of travel was developed during the witch burnings, so there was some logic when Floo was developed."

Harry supposed that made sense, is wixen had the powder, instead of being killed, they could escape, but that wasn't very helpful for normal people- no. Mundane, who were accused and burnt.

"Now, first things first, Goblins are a warrior race; they prefer battles won over battles surrendered. When you interact with them, be sure to show them respect, but don't take what they give lying down. There's an important middle ground that earns their respect: most first-gens will just submit to whatever they're offered, while more… isolationist x-gens won't show any respect to the goblins whatsoever and demand their respect anyway. Both extremes are bad."

Harry nodded. That was reasonable, show them respect but give them a challenge.

"Next, Goblins don't often tell wixen about this fact, but they offer more services than the Wixen World is legally capable of. This is because their laws surround the actions of an individual, rather than the methods they used. Or in legal terms, they look at mens rea, rather than actus reus."

"Isn't that the same thing, Uncle Rei?"

"Eh," his uncle waved his hand in a so-so gesture, "more like… Wixen Law describes magic into categories of light and dark, there's a spell called the cutting curse, Wixen Law describes it as dark, but as much as it can be used on people, it was originally made to be used on pottery. Nevertheless, using the cutting curse is illegal no matter how you use it. Goblin law would instead look at what the user was trying to do with the spell, before passing judgement. They don't determine magic as light and dark, they have White, Grey and Black magic. Black magic can't do anything other than harm- especially the innocent, and White magic exclusively heals. With Black magic, the only thing that has to be proven is that the being has actually performed the action, rather than what they were trying to use it for."

"What would they say is Black magic."

"Well one thing they would definitely classify as Black would be Horcruxes, which is when a person splits their soul after committing cold-blooded murder and places it into an object with the goal of achieving immortality. It's impossible to create one without doing so. An example of White magic would be healing spells like Episkey." Harry nodded in understanding, "anyway, because of this, they have services that the ministry would generalise as evil; like blood magic."

Harry was a bit unsure about that term, he didn't like the sound of blood magic, but then again, his uncle did say that it was a matter of how you used it. Maybe it could be really helpful?

"An example of the Goblins using blood magic is found in their inheritance tests, which is basically a DNA test except they changed the name for the more isolationist x-gens and the test analyses magic as well."

Hearing his uncle mention that brought Harry's mind away from his negative thoughts on the subject to more positive ones like his subconscious reminder of the existence of blood donation, which would count as blood magic if there were a magic equivalent.

"Another thing to know about Goblins- actually any magical race is: they all hold a deep care for children."

"Why is that?"

"Diagon Alley- because humans are the only species on Earth capable of reproducing to the level that we do. Goblins, and almost every other magical species, while capable of having children, have trouble actually having children. Because of this, they despise the mistreatment of children, which they see as a gift. The wixen world somewhat shares this belief, but its overpowered by their superiority complex; they essentially see mundanes as crippled due to their 'lack of magic' and either ignore or are completely oblivious to technology and our population. Though it's particularly bad in Magical Britain. Some countries, like Japan are actually pretty well connected with their mundane half, though the existence of magic itself is still a relatively close guarded secret and few more mundanes are aware of its existence, though definitely not to the extent of Britain. Due to this, Japan- and a few countries like it- have been able to develop ways for technology to be used in tandem with magic."

Harry found himself so fascinated by the subject that he never noticed he and his uncle entering the green flames with his uncle until he suddenly felt like he was being sucked down a giant drain. He seemed to be spinning very fast, and the roaring in his ears was deafening. He tried to keep his eyes open, but the whirl of green flames made him feel sick something hard knocked his elbow and he tucked it in tightly, still spinning and spinning, though now he felt warm arms wrapping around him. Squinting through his glasses he saw a blurred stream of fireplaces and snatched glimpses of the rooms beyond. When the feeling finally ended, Harry found himself standing in a dark pub, when he noticed a man with hair only on the sides of his head walking over to them, Harry hid himself behind his uncle. Though he did notice what he was fairly sure was a Mr. Mime behind the approaching man, serving a table.

"Rei Evans, good to see you again, what business have you got in Diagon Alley today?" the man asked cheerily.

"Keep it quiet, Tom, but I have to talk to the Goblins about some health check-ups for my nephew," his uncle whispered, loud enough for only the man to hear.

Tom- because that had to be the man’s name, made an 'O' shape with his mouth before smiling mischievously and tapping his nose with a finger before pointing it to his uncle, who nodded in thanks before guiding Harry through the pub, somehow managing to completely avoid the attention of everyone inside. Out the back of the pub was a small, walled courtyard, where there was nothing but a dustbin and a few weeds.

"Now, you're probably confused as to why we weren't noticed," his uncle spoke while he tapped a series of bricks, "we used a charm called 'Notice-Me-Not', I figured you wouldn't want to be crowded by the wixen that were in there."

Harry nodded absentmindedly; his uncle had explained how magical saw him as some kind of hero because he didn’t die with his parents. He watched, stunned as the last brick his uncle touched quivered, and wriggled, before, in the middle of the wall, one of the bricks disappeared, after that, the ones around it did the same and after a few seconds, there was an archway even a giant could probably fit through. Harry's eyes followed the brick to where it met a cobbled street which twisted and turned out of sight.

"Welcome," his uncle said with a smirk, "to Diagon Alley."

Once they had stepped through the archway, Harry looked back to see the bricks fold back, removing the archway as if it had never been. Looking ahead once more, he took the alley's wonder in. The sun shone brightly on a stack of cauldrons outside the nearest shop. 'Cauldrons – All sizes – Copper, Brass, Pewter, Silver – Self-Stirring – Collapsible' read a sign hanging over them.

"Yeah, you'll end up needing one of those once I start teaching you how to make potions, but that won't be for a while, and I'll probably just let you use one of mine until your first year at Hogwarts."

Harry had read about that in one of the library's Wixen History books. Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was the only Wixen school in Great Britain and accepted students from Great Britain and Ireland. It was state-owned and currently funded by the Ministry. The school had been started by four wix: Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, Godric Gryffindor and Salazar Slytherin, who named in school houses after themselves. The students were sorted into each house based on their character, how they were sorted, Harry had no idea; not a single book included that information. He had no idea how they had been able to keep it a secret for a millennia.

Drawing himself out of his thoughts, Harry found himself wishing he had about eight more eyes. He turned his head in every direction trying to get a view of everything: the shops, the things outside them, the people doing their shopping (he didn't think witches and wizards would wear the stereotypical wix clothing). A low soft hooting came from a dark shop with a sign saying 'Eyelops Owl Emporium – Tawny, Screech, Barn, Brown and Snowy'. A group of boys a bit older than Harry had their noses pressed against a window with brooms in it. There were shops selling robes, shops selling telescopes and strange silver instruments Harry had never seen before.

"We're headed there, Gringotts," his uncle said, drawing Harry's attention forward.

They had reached a snowy-white building which towered over the other buildings. Standing beside its gleaming bronze doors, wearing a scarlet and gold uniform, was-

"That's a Goblin," his uncle whispered to him as they walked up the white stone steps towards him.

The Goblin was about a head shorter than Harry. He had a swarthy, clever face, a pointed beard and, Harry noticed, very long fingers and feet. When the Goblin bowed, Harry's uncle paused and bowed back before giving a series of throaty growls which confused Harry until the Goblin responded similarly, a toothy grin dressing its face. He figured it must be some kind of Goblin language.

"That was Goblin Tongue," his uncle confirmed, "Wixen often refer to it as Gobbledegook, but that's not the languages name and the Goblins find it really disrespectful. Since they don't like wasting time and effort unnecessarily, it's just named 'Goblin Tongue'; both in their language and in translation to every other language."

They were now facing another pair of doors, silver this time, with words on them. His uncle let out a soft chuckle as Harry read the words:

Enter, stranger, but take heed
Of what awaits the sin of greed,
For those who take, but do not earn,
Must pay most dearly in their turn,
So if you seek beneath our floors
A treasure that was never yours,
Thief, you have been warned, beware
Of finding more than treasure there.

"They warn against theft because that way those that actually try give them more of a challenge, they're subtly asking for people to try and steal from them."

A pair of goblins bowed them through the silver doors, and they were in a vast marble hall. About a hundred more goblins were sitting on high stools behind a long counter, scribbling in large ledgers, weighing coins on brass scales, examining precious stones through eyeglasses. There were too many doors to count leading off the hall, and yet more goblins were showing people in and out of these. Harry and his uncle made for one of the counters.

"Good Morning, Teller Bogrod. May your sword stay sharp, and your gold ever increase."

"May your coffers flow and your enemies fall before you, Rei Aster Evans. What can Gringotts do for you today?"

"I need to speak with the Potter Account Manager and arrange an appointment with Healer Grankit as well as Curse Breaker Bloodaxe."

"Very well, Griphook shall lead you."

Griphook was yet another Goblin. Harry and his uncle followed Griphook down a long corridor leading off the hall. After about three turns, they ended up in front of another bronze door, though this one was far smaller than the one leading into the bank. Upon entering, the first thing that drew Harry's attention was the large wooden desk with a golden plaque on it that read 'Account Manager Cutthroat' with a series of names underneath. Harry spotted both Evans and Potter as well as a bunch he was completely unfamiliar with, such as Prince, Ravenclaw, Black and McGonagall. Though that last one made Harry think of that dream with the flying motorcycle for some reason. Behind the desk was a threatening looking Goblin that almost seemed like he was staring right into Harry's soul. What he found more terrifying was the vicious grin that appeared when the Goblin looked at his uncle.

"Greetings, Lord Evans. May your business grow, and your enemies fall before your might."

"Hey, Cutthroat. And may your accounts increase and your challengers tremble at the thought of combat with you."

When the Goblin turned to Harry he felt his body and mind lock up, trying to think of something to say.

"M-may your enemies, um, w-wet themselves in fear of you…?"

Both Cutthroat and his uncle's stunned stares worried Harry… until they suddenly burst into laughter.

----____--------____----

"Lord Evans, please come with me."

Rei was intrigued by the request; the Goblins had found out what the parasite was and were working on migrating it from his body. A Horcrux! He couldn't believe it! To think the Dark Bastard had mad a goddamn Horcrux! SIX EVEN! They had been able to figure out the size of the soul shard being about 1/64th, meaning 5 others and seven soul pieces total! Thankfully, the one in Harry's scar was A. unintentional and likely created when the AK rebounded on him, and B. was also sealed in some kind of protection magic Lily cast, so the shard, while in Harry's head, wasn't attached to him in any way. Though theoretically, if they didn't remove it before Voldy found out about it, the bastard could probably have made it stick. The Goblins were being extra careful with removing the shard as Harry was the first ever living Horcrux and they had no idea how that might affect the soul shard's removal.

"What is it, Cutthroat?"

"Upon the discovery of Tom Marvolo Riddle's sixth Horcrux, we decided to perform a scan of all the vaults in the event of further Black magic." Rei nodded, that made sense, "We discovered one more instance of this magic."

"So that makes 4 of his Horcruxes found? Harry, Slytherin's Locket, Ravenclaw's Diadem and… what was this one?"

"Helga Hufflepuff's Cup."

Rei let out a soft growl from his throat. That fucker had really made all those Horcruxes, and what's more was he was desecrating Wixen history in the process. How Riddle had maintained so many X-gen followers was beyond him. He recalled when he found that one back in 1982, shortly after he had saved Bartemius Jr from being shipped to Azkaban- he knew the kid wouldn't have joined the Death Munchers had he known anything true about Voldemort's intentions; he had even been the one to bring Regulus to him back when they both defected. Barty was disinherited by his absolute dick of a father even when Rei proved that Barty's only intention was the restoration of Wixen practices and traditions, rather than the eradication of first-gens (he felt they should be treated as immigrants in a society they didn't understand, rather than honoured guests that the entire society had to bend over backwards to change for); in the end, Rei's parents blood-adopted the young man- despite arguments from the conservatives, and Bartemius Crouch Jr became Edward Delphinium Evans (after the change, he frequently mentioned his fondness of the new name, as well as his hatred of receiving his father's name. And while he wouldn't receive the title of heir, he was a proud member of the Evans'). Edward was currently studying to get a teaching license now that he had his master's in Defence Against the Dark Arts and Curse-breaking (though both he and Rei believed it should just be called Defence). The man only about 7 years younger than Rei himself had expressed his desire to be the first long-lasting Defence teacher since 1948.

Argus Filch, a squib whom Rei had actually met at Oxford in 1975, where Rei first started being referred to as a Pokémon Professor. Argus had been taking a major in Art History part-time and had decided to stop by a few of his introductory classes, before speaking to him after regarding the fact that he had brushed on the existence of magic without actually stating it (that way, one would have to know about magic in the first place to understand the reference). They had become quick friends and Rei found that Argus had to unfortunately suffer the indignity of being some kind of inclusion project for Hogwarts. The man had to work as a caretaker despite the presence of House Elves that could do the work he did in a fraction of the time; his presence was also often mocked by the Marauders, the poltergeist Peeves and most of the remaining Hogwarts population. This unfortunately led to the development of a complete hatred of children. Thankfully, Rei had been able to mitigate that by introducing the man to Lily who was fascinated to learn about magical paintings and their restoration/repair from the man.

Argus had invited Rei to help in sorting through the newly discovered Room of Hidden things, primarily for any artworks that may have needed to be restored or placed back onto the walls of Hogwarts' halls. Argus had spotted the diadem first, pointing it out when he realised his strange behaviour towards the diadem. They ended up manoeuvring it into a box they had Mary Taylor- now Cattermole- cover in anti-magic wards. Rei then brought it to the Goblins, and they destroyed the shard- for a fee of course. He then returned it to Helena Ravenclaw, Rowena's daughter; both he and Argus received profuse thanks from Helena that, according to Argus, continued to this day (thankfully not as frequently as when it first started though). Unfortunately, his cat, Mrs Norris passed away due to a combination of the effects of the Diadem and old age, so Rei gifted the man an Eevee that he immediately named Starlight after discovering it knew the move swift. Starlight wore a collar with an everstone attached as Argus found that she didn't want to evolve. His mood had definitely improved since 1975, though he still despised inconsiderate, destructive and rude children.

This meant there were only two horcruxes left- unless Riddle had made more since becoming… whatever the fuck it was that someone who dies while having a horcrux becomes. The only questions were what and where were they? And how long would it take to destroy them?

Incomplete Marriage Contract between Harry Potter and ____________

Harry stared at the scroll blankly, Rei wondered if something was wrong, until-

"What does any of this mean?"

After accepting the scroll, Rei scanned the paper, the compulsion was something that infuriated him, but he'd get to that later. He also let out a small blush and smirked internally at Narcissa's name (cause damn! Even magic itself didn't consider Lucius her husband) and his heart broke at the sight of his unborn daughter's name. With a small shake of his head, he brought himself out of his thoughts.

"What parts are confusing you?"

"What does it mean by potion and potion ingredients on status? What is a magus, aren't I a wizard? Why is there a marriage contract? And why is only my name on it? What are all the magicks it mentions? What's blood adoption? What does heir apparent and heir presumptive mean?"

Rei thought through his questions, it seemed that Hermione, while thankfully helping Harry out of his shell, had also passed her rapid-fire method of speaking, and asking questions- dear Arceus it was infectious.

"Okay, so with the potion ingredients and potions on status, it mostly means they're magically preserved; kind of… frozen in time… with magic? It was a spell that could be performed so nothing was wasted. Uh, a magus is a class of Wix; it's mostly talking about how much magic you have, which is to say, a lot. There are 2 other magi noted in recent years: Albus Dumbledore and Tom Marvolo Riddle, I've told you a bit about both, Riddle is just Voldemort's real name. The marriage contract was something your dad's family, the Potter's did… how to explain it… uh, so you know how when two people want to get married, they normally get engaged first?" a nod met his question, which was good, "the contract is basically for that, since there's a bunch of noble houses in the magical world, the contract is sometimes to say which kids would be the heir- or heiress of which houses. I'm guessing your parents just made that one in case they died. We can have a look over it later tonight or tomorrow if you want. Blood adoption is like regular adoption except the child becomes as if you were actually their parent. So, you, being blood adopted, have 2 dads and 1 mum rather than just one of each. Heir apparent means that unless you die, you'll become the lord of those houses, whereas Heir presumptive means that until there's someone else, you'll be heir- like if I had a kid, they would probably become heir apparent, and you won't be heir to the Evans house- you'll still be a member… you just won't be in charge… does that make sense?"

Rei was really worried he hadn't explained it well enough- sure he was normally pretty good at lectures, he did teach about Pokémon on the regular- but they were adults with existing knowledge that he didn't have to break down further, not 8-year-olds who would only be learning basic mathematics, English etcetera. Thankfully, Harry's expression showed understanding, which was good.

"Now, as for the magicks, Parseltongue is the language of snakes, Parselmagic essentially being casting spells unique to and in Parseltongue, you can learn Parseltongue, but not Parselmagic. Occlumency is the technique of controlling and ordering your mind, it's also kind of like a mind shield against Legillimency, which is basically mind reading. A Metamorphmagus is a Wix with the ability to change their appearance at will, for example, changing your hair colour and length. All beings have an Animagus form, mundanes sometimes call it their inner animal, Wix can gain the ability to turn into that animal, which is what gets them classified as an Animagus. Your familiar is… like an animal best friend? The best way I can explain it is sort of like a pet friend chosen for you by magic- we’ll stop by Eyelops when we leave. Now as for Necromancy… I think we’ll leave that one until you’re a bit older… let’s say when you’re atleast 16, then I’ll explain it to you."

That was a lot. Rei had no idea how the little Hermione Granger could say the same amount probably without breathing until she was finished. She would probably make her future spouse very happy… unless she completely ignores romance for books, which probably could happen, but who knows, she wasn’t even a preteen yet. Who would know where her interests would lie… okay, maybe his goddaughter would, but she was a Seer, watching the possibilities of the future like a real-world sitcom was literally a part of her magic.

Oh well. His job right now was to get his nephew home and fed.
