It was a stormy day in November when Y/n awoke. The angry thunder cracks were an alarm clock for all those still sleeping, and reluctantly y/n got up. As he walked out of his room, he heard the radio switch from the weather forecast to the daily news. Although he could care less since most of it was commentary on the Wizarding War, which he already knew plenty about. “I mean, my best friend played a huge part and pretty much everyone by now has heard of it, so...what else is there that needs to be said? It’s been going on for about 8 years now” He said as he put the kettle on the stove. He usually could care less about these types of things, but today was exceptionally true as he had a very important thing at work that afternoon. He and his jazz band were recording a song today! He was certainly excited, but very nervous as this had to be the best rehearsal they’ve had. Soon, the tea had been drunk, best clothes were put on, and off he went to their music hall.
Little did he know, the day had other plans. People stopped him many times on his way into work to ask annoying questions like: “is it true that you know Newt Scamander? Like, the real one?” Or “The saxophone, really? Wow, thought someone who was so “famous” would play something a little more, you know, elegant”. And the best one yet, “Why is he so odd? I mean, just look at him! How did he of all people befriend that wizard guy?” Y/N ignored it though and just kept on his way.
Later that day, after an excruciatingly long rehearsal and even longer recording of the number, Y/n was ready to sleep through the next week. It didn’t help that the tag in his shirt scratched at his neck, his trousers felt like rough styrofoam, and his ears were still ringing from the bands’ instruments. As he was walking home the rain continued and giant puddles began to pool at his feet, ruining both his socks and his demeanor. He sighed and began to walk faster to avoid getting more wet. Soon, his speed walking turned into a run as a flash of lightning and thunder cracked. He ran until he finally reached his house and fumbled with the key to open the door. Once he got inside, he could feel his chest tightening and his eyes filling with tears. He sank to the corner of his room and started to dig his nails into his arms. He felt angry, sad, overwhelmed, and all he could do was quietly sob as his day turned from bad to atrocious. “No!” He yelled out. As his wet clothes clung to his shivering body, he felt himself get smaller and smaller.
Newt walked home with his suitcase in hand. He had a tiresome day and was ready to come home and see his dear friend y/n. He was grateful that compared to y/n, his day was pretty uneventful. Reaching the front door, he was surprised to find it was unlocked. “That’s odd, y/n always locks the door after coming home”. He set his suitcase down and called out to him. “Y/n, I’m back!” When he didn’t get a response; he walked tentatively upstairs to his bedroom with his wand in hand. He opened the door and his heart sank. He put down his wand and walked over to him.
“Hey buddy, what’s happened? Now now, don’t do that you’ll hurt yourself” He said gently pulling his hands away from his arms. Y/n looked up from hearing Newt’s voice and felt a wave of relief come over him. His lip quivered and he began to cry harder. “Oh don’t cry my dear, it’s alright. You must’ve had a rough day, huh?” He quipped while picking up the smaller boy in his arms, carrying him into the bathroom across the hall. He set him down onto the toilet seat and turned the tap to the bath, “You’ll get a rash if you stay in those wet clothes”. Once the tub was filled with not too hot warm water, he helped the smaller one out of his wet outfit. As he unbuttoned his shirt, he noticed the now red scars on his arms. His heart heaved even more and he helped him into the water.
After the bath and finding something comfortable to wear, Newt took y/n by the hand and led him downstairs. “Alright little one, Teddy will be here to keep you company. I’m just going to get something from the other room, okay?” Newt reassured him as Niffler hopped out of his opened briefcase. Y/n nodded and ran his hands through Niffler’s fuzzy body. Newt came back with a cup of tea for himself and a bottle of milk for y/n.
As the two began to sip their drinks, he could see y/n’s eyes begin to droop and taking notice he picked up the bottle and set it on the table next to the couch. Y/n yawned and rubbed his eyes. Well, someone sure is sleepy. Come on let’s go to bed, tomorrow will be a much better day, I promise” Newt reassured as they walked back up the stairs.
Walking into the bedroom, he tucked y/n in and he looked over and signed, “I love you”. “Aw, I love you too, my dear. More than you’ll ever know” Newt said, kissing his forehead. Y/n smiled contently and fell asleep on Newt’s chest. Not wanting to wake him up, Newt happily stayed and held the boy close. “We all have bad days, but it’s those who care about you that make it better” he thought as he began to drift off into his peaceful dreamland.
