Aiah sat quietly on the couch, glancing at her phone as she waited for a certain someone's message.
She felt a lump in her throat and a tear streamed down her cheek as she whispered to herself, "Nakalimutan ba talaga niya?"
Sheena hadn't sent her a message since earlier. Aiah had been waiting for her girlfriend's message all day, but nothing came through.
Sheena wasn’t even present. Aiah couldn't help but wonder where Sheena had been. Slowly, the worry began to settle in.
She buried her head in her knees and started to cry. Her 24th birthday felt like the worst one yet. "Nasan ka na ba, Shee?" she muttered.
Just then, Aiah heard the front door creak, signaling that someone had entered. And there she was—the person she had been waiting for all day.
Sheena slowly closed the door and froze, surprised to see her girlfriend crying. "Umuwi ka pa?" Aiah said sarcastically, wiping her tears away and turning her face.
Sheena rushed over to kneel in front of Aiah, gently wiping her tears. "Ate Aiah, I’m sorry. I was busy preparing something special for you, and I didn’t have time to message you" Sheena explained, her voice sincere, but Aiah wasn't entirely convinced.
"Ni isang happy birthday message, wala ka?" Aiah rolled her eyes.
"Sorry na, asawa ko," Sheena muttered, kissing Aiah's hand. Aiah blushed slightly but remained sulking. "Sus, that doesn't change the fact that you forgot my birthday."
"I swear, Ate, I didn’t forget," Sheena said, glancing at the clock. "Ate, magbihis ka na. Pick your best fit because we're going somewhere." Sheena wiped away the tears that kept falling from Aiah’s eyes.
As they drove, Aiah couldn’t help but wonder about the surprise Sheena had been preparing for her, and why Sheena hadn’t sent her a single birthday greeting earlier.
Leaning against the car window, Aiah clenched her purse. Sheena had never surprised her outside; they always celebrated each other’s birthdays at home with their friends. But tonight, it was just the two of them.
"We’re here" Sheena said, stopping the car. Aiah gazed out the window, captivated by the view.
"Wow, Sheens, this is beautiful" Aiah exclaimed as Sheena helped her out of the car.
"I told you I’d prepare something special to make this your best birthday" Sheena smiled, intertwining their hands as they walked through the place.
They spent the night bonding and enjoying each other’s company. Sheena’s heart melted seeing Aiah so happy, hoping this would be Aiah’s favorite birthday yet—though the best part of the night was still to come.
Sheena glanced nervously at her watch, feeling the weight of her biggest surprise coming up.
She gently pulled Aiah to a quiet, peaceful spot where only the two of them could be, the beautiful view shining behind them. Sheena looked at Aiah nervously before clearing her throat.
"Ate Aiah, you know you’re my favorite, right?" Sheena mumbled, holding Aiah’s hand tightly, gazing at her stunning girlfriend.
"Mhm, you always tell me that" Aiah smiled, leaning down to kiss Sheena’s forehead. "And I’m thankful to be your favorite, baby."
"It’s been four years since we’ve been together, right, Ate?" Sheena’s heart beat faster. She hoped this moment would be worth the nerves.
"Mhm, four years and two months" Aiah added, a warm smile on her face.
Sheena cleared her throat again before kneeling down, making Aiah both confused and nervous.
"Ate, my favorite girl, my asawa, my everything... When I met you, I knew you were the one for me. Even when I tease you, even when you get mad at me... I never stopped loving you." Sheena looked up at Aiah, who was in shock at what was happening.
"I know it’s too soon, but I want to make the most of this because I love you so much, Ate Aiah. Even if I don’t always get your 'conyo' moments, or if you’re sometimes moody or jealous." Sheena pulled out a small, light blue box from her pocket and opened it to reveal a sparkling diamond ring. Aiah’s eyes widened in surprise.
"Shee..." Aiah murmured, but Sheena cut her off.
"Ate Aiah, can we make the 'my asawa' title official?" Sheena smiled nervously, making Aiah gasp and cover her mouth in disbelief.
"Ate Aiah, will you marry me?" Sheena’s voice trembled with nerves, praying silently for Aiah’s answer.
"Yes... Yes, Sheena, YES!" Aiah shouted with joy as happy tears streamed down her face. Sheena, relieved and overjoyed, slid the diamond ring onto Aiah’s finger before pulling her close for a passionate kiss.
It was the beginning of a new journey for both of them, tightly bound to each other’s hearts forever.
