Minerva McGonagall is Fucking Awesome
Once Regulus had finally left, the group entered the Great Hall—only to be immediately ushered back out by Professor McGonagall.
By this time, Remus had let go of James’s robes and wandered over to Lily. He tugged at her sleeve gently and whispered, “Mum?” before sitting by her feet, fidgeting with the hem of her robes.
McGonagall’s sharp eyes softened momentarily as she took in the scene. “I see that Mr. Lupin’s condition hasn’t improved?” she asked, her usual air of sternness laced with concern.
“No,” Sirius muttered, his voice heavy. “If anything, it’s gotten worse.” He glanced at her, his expression hardening. “Why didn’t you tell us about Regulus?”
“Regulus?” McGonagall repeated, her brow furrowing. “He’s left the school, hasn’t he?”
The group stared at her, disbelief etched on their faces.
“No,” Marlene said firmly. “We just had a run-in with him. Claimed his parents ‘cared too much for his education’ or some bullcrap.”
McGonagall’s lips thinned as she nodded. “I’ll speak with the headmaster,” she said, her voice steely.
“Thank you,” James whispered, his tone tinged with both relief and exhaustion.
“You’re quite welcome, Mr. Potter,” McGonagall replied. Her gaze shifted to the group, softening just a fraction. “You’ll be pleased to know that the headmaster has decided each of you may take breaks from your studies when needed to assist with Mr. Lupin’s care. He will be making an announcement shortly. For today, classes have been canceled.”
The group blinked in surprise, exchanging glances.
“In addition,” McGonagall continued, “a separate table has been arranged for you, near the corner of the room, so that you can look after him without distraction.”
Chris, who had been standing quietly at the back, mumbled, “Thank you.”
“That’s quite all right, Mr. Barley,” McGonagall replied, her tone softening further. “Now, come along. The headmaster is about to make his announcement. I’ll lead you to your table.”
“Professor?” Sirius whispered, looking down at Remus. “I… I don’t think Remus would want us to skip lessons because of him. Do… Do you think it would be okay if he came to classes with us?”
McGonagall’s eyes softened slightly, and she inclined her head. “I’m sure that would be okay Sirius, just as long as he doesn’t cause a disruption.”
She turned and marched forward, into the Great Hall.
The group followed her into the hall, with Lily gently helping Remus to his feet. As they moved toward their designated table, a strange mixture of relief and unease hung in the air.
