It hurt, sometimes, not knowing if they could be buried together. Mona and Pearl have their names on the club, but not on any marriage certificates, not on next-of-kin rights or wills or any of the crap that even the poorest, unhappiest straight couples have rights too.
But that doesn’t change the fact that they know who they are to each other, and so does almost everyone they know. They can hold hands where the patrons can see, and no one will dare breathe a word.
It’s not everything. But it’s not nothing, either, and they can live with that.
