Tina Goldstein was in her office at MACUSA when she heard a knock at the door and told them to come in. She was surprised to see Eulalie Hicks along with Jacob Kowalski entering her office though she did
hear about what had happened in Brazil a few days ago. She wished she could be there to get her sister back from Grindelwald’s control, but she had to work and to keep make sure that Gellert Grindelwald
didn’t come back to America as well as to check out any suspicious deaths in the muggle world.
“I suppose that you’re wondering why we’re here.” Eulalie told Tina.
“I’ve been wondering that especially since Jacob is a no maj who’s not supposed to have any knowledge of the wizarding world.” Tina replied.
“About that, Jacob is actually a wizard who had his magic bound when he was younger since his family had rejected his acceptance into Ilvermony. His family had their memories of Jacob’s act of magic erased. Jacob and his family had their memories of Jacob’s early showing of magical ability and their knowledge of the wizarding world erased. Albus Dumbledore had thought that Queenie had started to remove the bindings from his magic when she had started to see him romantically. While Jacob was a prisoner at Nuremgard Queenie visited him every day to finish unbinding his magic and to teach him how to use his rediscovered ability, and when Grindelwald took him to Bhutan to lure us there, he showed his true magical ability. Grindelwald was not happy about that nor was he happy with Queenie after that. She escaped from him along with her daughter and Queenie is now staying at Hogwarts while Hope, her daughter is staying with Newt Scamander’s parents. “
“Queenie has a daughter?” Tina asked sounding shocked wondering who her father could be.
“Yes, she does, apparently she was pregnant when she had joined Grindelwald in Paris which is why she had pushed me to marry her.” Jacob answered her.
Tina was shocked that her own sister had a child even though she knew that she had really wanted a family. She wondered if Queenie had known about Jacob being a wizard all along and hid it from everyone. If Queenie did know that Jacob was a wizard then why hide that fact from everyone, unless she wasn’t sure if she could unbind his magic and had originally planned to have Grindelwald unbind it. Since Jacob was a prisoner of Grindewald’s somehow Queenie had never gotten around to tell him the truth about Jacob. After Jacob was captured by Queenie at her engagement party the two of them reconciled and her engagement was called off.
“Queenie worked with me in unbinding my magic and showed me how to use my magical ability. She planned on having me display my newfound magical ability in Bhutan where Grindelwald planned on torturing no majs in a public display. He was surprised to discover that I had been a wizard all along. Queenie reassured me that my parents didn’t accept my letter to Ilvermony was that they needed me to work to help support my family.” Jacob told Tina who was wondering if his parents had a religious objection to magic since she did hear of some families who thought that magic was the work of the devil. It was such belief that had led to the passage of Rapport’s Law which had brought her sister right to Gellert Grindelwald.
“Do you realize now that Grindelwald and his followers are going to come to America for the purpose of “rescuing” those who had their magical powers suppressed and to kill those muggles whom they are to
blame for it. We might even see an event here where no maj torture will occur for entertainment and to draw out such wizards like Jacob who’ve had their magic bound up. This is going to make my department busy because now we are expecting greater no maj disappearances and murders. I don’t know how we can tell who has had their magic bound and are living as a no maj and who is just a no maj, unless there is a list at Ilvermony that we can look at.” Tina told them.
“I’ve already alerted out headmaster that we need to look at that list to see if any of their family members were killed by Grindelwald’s followers. Though those untrained wizards were never supposed to have any further contact with the outside world and their memories of any sort of magical world were supposed to have been obliviated. Jacob’s case was different since he accidentally bumped into Newt and got pulled into the magical world which no one could forsee.” Eulalie answered her.
“We will need to step up the protection that we already have surrounding Jacob’s bakery since he would be a target of Gridelwald’s followers and they will think that a wizard shouldn’t own a no maj business. “
“Will I still be able to own and operate the bakery, since now I’m a wizard and there is a law against no majs and wizards mixing? “Jacob asked worrying that he would have to give up his business that he loved.
“You can still have your bakery since you provide jobs for no majs, which is what they need right now with the Depression going on. We’ve already seen squibs who have lived in the no maj world for so long coming back to the magical world for better job prospects. Also, since you never had any formal magical training you’re not trained to take any positions in the magical world at this time. We do understand that you do need to support yourself which is what you do with your bakery. This new development could bring more business to your bakery with curious witches and wizards wanting to get a glance at an untrained wizard who only recently had his powers unbound.” Tina reassured him.
“I can see the increase in business since I returned from my recuperation in England.”
“This isn’t the only reason that we’re here Tina, we have a task for you to do. You’ve been tasked with teaching Jacob magic during a time that would work for both of you. With you teaching him will help him to defend himself against Grindelwald and his followers, since he would be an obvious target of them since he shows how bad muggles can be with them forcing him to hide his magical ability. With you teaching him magic instead of going to Ilvermony he can stay in New York City and continue working in his bakery. There will be times when he will go to Ilvermony to work on his training, but you will be able to teach him how to use magic to defend himself from any magical attack.” Eulalie said.
“When am I supposed to do this since there are times that I have to work late, especially now that Grindelwald’s followers are expected to increase their attacks in America?”
“You would need to set aside time each day to work with him, since he really can’t get a break from his training, but you would also need to work about his bakery hours.” Eulalie answered her.
“I have a lot of work here, I don’t know if I have the time to teach him seven years’ worth of magic in such a short while.”
“I know that you have your job here and Jacob has his bakery so you would need to work his training schedule around your schedules. I don’t know if you realize this but it is very important that Jacob learn to use his magical ability since he is now a target of Grindelwald and his followers. Capturing and harming Jacob and Hope would be used by Grindelwald to get Queenie to stay on his side. Queenie is now back with him but she’s going in as a spy on our end. She’s finally seen the error of her ways in siding with Grindelwald.”
“Will her daughter be going back with her or is she moving here to America with Jacob?” Tina asked sounding curious to see if she would have a chance to meet her niece and show her around New York.
“She’ll be staying with the Scamanders while her mother is with Grindelwald since there wasn’t a believable story that we could tell to get her to stay with me. She’ll only be there for a few months then she’ll be old enough to attend Hogwarts though she may be staying with the Scamanders during her school vacations, depending on if Queenie is with Grindelwald or not.” Jacob answered.
“Why can’t she stay with you?”
“I’ll be too busy with my bakery and wizard training to spend any time with her. Besides right now there isn’t a good reason for me to have a 10-year-old girl staying with me since I live alone. I can’t acknowledge her as my own daughter publicly right now since she was conceived before I even knew that I was a wizard. I can’t wait for the day when we could be reunited but we must wait until after the war to be reunited permanently. I told Queenie about James Smith’s death and how he was killed while writing a book for her to work on getting Rapport’s Law repealed here.”
“How did she take that news?” Tina asked sounding interested.
“She was surprised at first that I would try to get the wizarding law in America changed so we could be together. After that she felt betrayed by Grindelwald’s followers by killing a no maj who was writing a book about a mixed marriage. That writer’s death showed her Grindelwald’s true colors and his true feelings about mixed marriages. She finally realized that Grindelwald just wanted to use her for her legilimancy abilities and that he really wanted to make war against the no majs instead of allowing both wizards and no majs to live harmoniously together and now regrets her decision to follow him.”
“I know that she only wanted to be able to marry Jacob and to have a family with him. That’s all she ever wanted was a husband and family of her own. I knew that she was working at MACUSA until she got married and for me working as an Auror was a career for me, I wasn’t just marking time until marriage. I will teach you magic Jacob, but you must be dedicated to learning and practicing since you have seven years of magical training to learn in a very short time. I do know that you still have your other obligations to tend to but you need to make learning magic a high priority and not just something fun to do in your free time. Grindelwald would plan on using the fact that your magic was bound as an excuse to make war on the no majs and it could bring him here to America which would also make my job as Head Auror harder.”
