It's astronomy, we're two worlds apart
Regulus had dropped out of school and missed 6th and 7th year. James had seen him again with the dark mark on his arm. He had to give it up, it was the look that James gave him that caused all of this. He was at first going to sit there quietly and do whatever he was ordered to do.
But James had to give him that fucking look.
Now he was being dragged to the bottom of the lake after betraying the most powerful wizard alive. He knew going into this that he was dying, he knew that he wasn’t powerful enough to survive.
Was it wrong to blame James for this? Probably, yeah. But he wouldn’t be here if it wasn't for him. He didn’t regret it though. Not living was better than living with the blood of so many people on his hands.
His chest hurt so bad, there was no air on his lungs. Dark spots filled his vision and his last thought was about how much he wished he had been better to James, how he had helped Sirius run away. How he regretted spending so much of his life in fear when he was dying anyway.
The last bit off air escaped him

Regulus Black was dead.
James’ life was coming to an end. He had accepted this. Voldemort was in front of him. And he somehow was thinking of Regulus.
Regulus who had a dark mark. Regulus who had died. Regulus Black who had told James he didn’t want to join Voldemort but that he “had” to.
They had ended up on very different paths, James was married now. To wonderful, beautiful Lily Evans, and had a kid. He had a nice life. His life was coming to an end and somehow he was thinking about Regulus. He loved Lily, but deep down knew he had loved Regulus more.
He was making up for it in a way, he was going to fight Voldemort off Lily and Harry in a way he couldn’t with Regulus. He was putting up a fight, it was going to kill him but he wasn’t going to watch and do nothing.
A green spark came off the other’s wand.
