do the deed
Remus sat in the common room for a horribly awkward ten minutes, waiting for anyone who would rat him out to leave for an early breakfast. When he finally firmly believed nobody would see him, he crept hastily up the girls’ stairs.
He had only been up here a few times, to explore or to wake Lily up if she overslept. Or to do… stuff with a girlfriend he’d had a year back. So he had a vague idea of where to go, but it still took him five more minutes to find Lily’s dorm.
To his relief, Mary and Marlene had already left the room, so he didn’t need to worry about waking them. Lily was curled up like a cat, with her knees touching her arms and her back curved. Her hair was a mess, tangled and splayed all over the pillow and her shoulders. She was snoring softly, more like a cute animal would than a human.
Remus opened the door as far as he could before it began to creak, quickly throwing the black shirt at her head and closing the door again just as she began to stir.
“What…” She mumbled, “What’s going on? Who’s there?” He heard her jump to the floor and pad around the room, open her drawers, looking for clothes, only to discover none were there. He left, darting down the corridor to the common room, no longer caring who saw him. If she caught him she’d be more angry than confused.
“Hey, Rem!” Sirius called from the boys’ stairs as he left the girls’ side.
“Hey, Siri,” he said, a little frantically. “I need to get out, fast. Lily’ll interrogate me if she finds me here, but there’s a slight chance she won’t if I’m away.”
“Dramatic, much? You’ll be fine,” Sirius said reassuringly. “But, you know her better, so do whatever’s necessary. I’ve gotta wait for James, though. Be downstairs later.” He pecked Remus’s cheek softly before Remus ran out of the common room door.
“Remus, were you the one who woke me up with a shirt thrown in my face?” Lily questioned him after breakfast as they headed to first hour Physics.
Damn it. He was hoping she wouldn’t ask, but of course she would. Being Lily Evans, she needed to understand every minuscule irregularity in her life. “Oh? Uh, no,” he lied, trying and failing to look her in the eyes.
She gave him an extremely skeptical mom glance. “If you say so. But, theoretically, if you wanted me to wear my Ally shirt today, there are easier ways to do it than hiding all my others.”
He did his best to not look guilty. At least she was wearing it, though, with all its black-and-rainbow glory. She’d paired it with skinny jeans, high tops, and a half-up-half-down hairstyle that would probably make James drool when he saw her.
“Hey, Evans!” Was he telepathic? Doubtful.
“I, uh, like your shirt!” He said dopiley, without really looking at it.
She glared fiercely, her face red, and he recoiled. “What?”
“Potter, you dumbass, we’re wearing the same shirt.”
Sirius appeared behind James, smirking like mad. “This is better than a rom-com,” he whispered to Remus.
“Oh! Uh, cool. It looks better on you than on me,” James stuttered. “Well, don’t get me wrong, I look awesome, but-” She rolled her eyes irritatedly, stopping him from babbling further.
“Potter, how did you know I was going to wear this shirt today?” She asked in a very professional-badass-criminal-interrogator voice.
“I didn’t!” He protested. “Just a happy coincidence.”
“Happy?” She arched an eyebrow.
“See what I mean?” Remus whispered to Sirius. “She’s scary.”
Sirius nodded in agreement, and then held out a hand. Remus gave him a soft low-five.
“Please go change,” Lily said tiredly, but still with fire in her eyes. “It’s embarrassing.”
“What’s embarrassing?” James asked, lost.
“It looks like we’re- like- y’know- dating!” She burst out angrily. “And we’re not, and I don’t want anything to do with you, so please, just don’t.”
“Ouch.” Sirius muttered, before Lily whirled on them.
“You two planned this, didn’t you? Why else would I get this shirt thrown at me first thing in the morning?”
“We did not!” They protested at the exact same time. Sirius side-eyed Remus, and they both burst into giggles.
She raised an eyebrow. “You sure?”
“Nope, not at all,” Remus said, chuckling.
“Real funny,” Lily said, crossing her arms.
Remus wasn’t paying attention anymore, though, because Sirius was tugging on his sleeve, standing on tiptoes trying to kiss his cheek. It was adorable, and Remus couldn’t resist patting his head like a dog. “There, there, shortie.”
Sirius pouted.
Lily watched them, her mind whirling. Since when were they, like, comfortable with their emotions? They were the most stubborn people she knew, so why would they… Unless of course…
Well, duh. She was kind of an idiot.
“For how long have you been dating?” She asked, finding it adorable how Remus was dipping his head down so that Sirius could kiss his cheek, and he in turn kissed the top of Sirius’s head.
They turned to her, suddenly embarrassed. They had clearly been in their own little world.
“Um, like, four days?” Sirius replied sheepishly.
“Really? I would have guessed a year from how close you are,” she said, her anger gone now.
“Nah, since James’s birthday.” Remus agreed.
“Hm. Okay, well then, Sirius.” She faced him, feeling a surge of protectiveness. “I love Remus like a brother and would protect him with my life, so believe me when I tell you-” She marched the two steps between them and pulled his face to hers by the collar of his shirt. “You break his heart, I break your bones. Got it?”
He nodded as best he could, given the situation, and she dropped him again. “Good.”
“Lily-” Remus began, looking a little worried.
“And you,” she pivoted towards him and jabbed him in the chest, laughing. “I fucking told you!”
He shrugged guiltily, smiling softly. “So you did. I have no regrets.”
“Neither do I,” Sirius agreed, despite being a little shaky. He grinned up at Remus, who put an arm around him.
Lily finally noticed James, who had been standing behind her waving frantically in an attempt to get her attention. “Yes?”
“Can I keep my shirt? Now that you’re not angry maybe you changed your mind?”
She laughed again. “Ha, ha, ha, no. Go change.”
He left, a little gloomily.
“You’re breaking that boy’s heart,” Remus noted, a little perturbed.
“So I am,” she shrugged. “Maybe he should have set his sights on someone else.”
“Please, Lily, can you give him a chance?” Sirius pleaded. “At least so he stops griping about you.”
“No.” She shook her head. “Maybe it seems harsh of me, but no bloody well means no, and he needs to get that through his thick skull. It isn’t a challenge or me playing hard to get, it’s a response. He needs to accept that even if it’s not what he wants to hear.” She tilted her head for a moment, realizing something just as a bell rang. “Also, we’re late.”
“Dammit!” Remus called as he tore after her through the halls, Sirius’s hand in his. Still laughing for no reason other than the joy of life.
