Chapter three
“Do you have everything?” Laura asked and both girls nodded.
“Yes we do, we’re going to be fine Laura” Kate said and hugged her one last time.
“Yes, I am a widow after all and Kate is…luchshiy yastreb, chem on (a better hawk than him)” Yelena grinned.
“What did you say?” Yelena shrugged and Laura laughed.
“ty idiot (you’re an idiot)” Clint answered and Yelena smirked.
“Stop talking in Russian…” Kate whined.
“It’s ok мой маленький ястреб (my little hawk). I’ll teach you” Yelena pinched Kate’s cheek and Lila rolled her eyes at them.
Nate came running from inside the house and gave them a small present. “This is for you” He grinned at them and Kate took the gift.
Kate opened it and it was a picture of them all together, Lila, Cooper, Laura and Clint in the back and Nate between Yelena and Kate in the front kissing his cheeks. It was probably the cheesiest picture she’s taken and she was absolutely in love with it. She wasn’t going to say it but…you know.
“This is great Nate, thank you so much” Yelena picked him up and hugged him. “I’ll make sure we have it somewhere where everyone can see it” He hugged her back and then she felt two arms hugging them both. She didn’t need to look to know it was Kate.
“We are going to miss you bud” She said. “All of you”
“You can come back whenever you want, kids,” Clint said, looking at both of them. “This is your house”
They hugged everyone goodbye and got into the car. They needed to be back in New York to give Henry their marriage license and start digging.
For most part of the road they kept to themselves. Yelena for her part…was driving and her mind was going miles per hour. On one hand, she didn’t want this to finish…they said some things, bad things…and she didn’t want to follow her own orders. She didn’t want to leave Kate once she got the info…but on the other…wouldn’t it be safer for her if she did it on her own? Kate’s life mattered more than her own and she wasn’t going to put her in any danger.
“Yelena?” Kate broke the silence as they entered New York.
“Yes?” Yelena didn't dare to look at her.
“Do you think we should talk?” Yelena could hear the nervousness coming from her voice. “I mean…a lot has happened and we said things..and we did things…and I don’t know…maybe it’s just me…or…” Kate was rumbling.
“Kate…” She tried to stop her but Kate kept talking. Should they talk about it? They haven’t even mentioned the kiss when they were alone.
“and yeah I know…you don’t have to or want to but I..”
“Kate Bishop” Yelena raised her voice a little and Kate stopped talking and looked at her. “Breath” Yelena looked back at her and nodded. “Good”
“Sorry…”
“No need. And yes…maybe we should talk” Kate nodded.
“Thank you, I think we need it” Yelena nodded. “Can we talk at home?”
Home…Yelena had to take a deep breath. “Sure”
Yelena drove a bit more and when they reached Kate’s building there were a few paps waiting there. “Fuck…what do we do?” Kate looked at Yelena and she shrugged.
“I mean, aren’t we supposed to sell this?” Yelena pointed at both of them. “I say we park in front and we play our game” Yelena smiled at Kate. She knew being closer to Kate hurt her but at the same time she wanted to make the most of her time with her. Don’t blame her…she got a taste of it and now it was the only thing she could think about.
“Yeah ok” Yelena saw Kate’s blush. “But…why are they here now?” Yelena looked guilty at her. She hadn’t told Kate that she took some pictures and sent them to a few reporters as an anon. “What did you do?”
“Not much…Just sent some pictures here and there…and I might have added pictures of us to my insta account” Yelena tried to play it cool and Kate sighed.
“Ok…I guess…ok” Yelena was surprised, she was waiting for rage once again but she looked at Kate and saw her smiling at her.
“Let’s do this” She parked their car and got out in a rush so she could open Kate’s door for her. She took Kate’s hand in hers to help her out and Kate looked at her smiling.
“Thank you babe” Shivers…what on earth happened to her to get shivers from hearing that word coming out of Kate’s mouth. “Come here”
Before Yelena could protest Kate had one arm around her and the other holding their bag. Yelena had to say that the difference in height helped their position and well, Yelena was enjoying it just fine. Some paps got pictures of them and some shouted questions to them and Kate ignored them all. She just walked holding Yelena close to her and even kissed her head before entering the building. Everything looked so natural that Yelena felt the need to pinch her arm.
They got into the elevator and Kate let go of her. “That wasn’t so bad, was it?” Kate asked her.
“No..of course not…” Yelena smiled at Kate and it was getting a bit too suffocating there so she changed the subject. “Lucky is going to be mad at us for leaving him alone”
“Nah, he is a good boy,” Kate chuckled. “And I asked my friend Grills to take care of him while we were gone”
“Oh…I didn’t know” Who was this Grills? Is he close to Kate?
“You’re not the only one who can keep things to herself” Kate said it smiling but it felt like a punch. They arrived and there was a letter on the table in front of the elevator. “What 's this?” Kate took it and then gave it to Yelena.
Yelena looked at the envelope and it was addressed to Yelena Bishop “Huh” She looked at Kate and saw a mixture of panic and something else she couldn’t quite put her finger on. “I think it’s our marriage license” She opened it and there it was.
“Yelena…that looks…too real” Yelena nodded.
“That’s because it is” Yelena looked at Kate’s shocked face and then laughed. “I’m kidding”
“Jesus Christ Yelena…you gave me a heart attack” Yelena laughed again.
“Is it really that bad to be married to me?” Yelena joked but she was trying to see Kate’s reaction.
“Of course not…it’s just..ugh..this is going to sound so cheesy” Yelena waited for Kate to continue. “I ugh…I just..I want my first marriage to be…real” Yelena nodded. She wished she could give her that.
“Don’t worry Bishop…” Yelena forced a smile. “Your first marriage will be with someone you love deeply and then the 2nd one will be better” At that Kate laughed but her cheeks were blushed.
“I’ll always consider you my first wife Belova…don’t worry” And there it was again…the pull…the need to just grab her and kiss her again so she cleared her throat and chuckled.
“I’m flattered…should we go to Bishop’s security now or?” Yelena asked and looked around the house.
“No…not now, tomorrow better…we actually need to update the house and add pictures of us here” Yelena nodded. That seemed a smart move. “People might come and wonder why they didn’t see you before or whatever…”
“Yeah yeah, sure” Yelena kept looking around. “Where’s Lucky?”
“He’s with Grills” Kate shrugged. “I’ll message him and ask him to bring him back and he can have dinner with us if that’s ok”
“Oh..sure…I can even go to my room or whatever…” Kate frowned at her.
“What? No…of course not…why would my wife be in her room” Yelena looked at Kate’s frown and couldn’t help but find it cute. What the hell is wrong with her?
“Oh..so we are pretending with him too?” Kate nodded. “Ok then..I’ll play my part”
“No need to play anything, Yelena…” Kate smiled at her but it was different…it was sad? “Just be yourself”
“Ok…do you mind if I go shower before we do everything around here?” Kate nodded.
“Sure…just go ahead and I’ll start without you”
Yelena nodded and walked up the stairs but before she reached the top she looked back at Kate and saw her looking down at the picture frame Nate gave them with a small smile and she couldn’t help the smile reaching her own face.
Kate’s POV
Kate looked at the picture and she couldn’t help the feelings inside her chest. There was something about Yelena that she couldn’t quite put her finger on. Yelena felt right…the picture felt right. Like she was supposed to be exactly there with them. With her.
These 2 days have been a rollercoaster, fighting with Yelena, pretending to be with her, her mom’s call…and obviously…the kiss. That freaking amazing kiss that she has in a loop in her head all the time. She would’ve never imagined how soft Yelena’s kisses were. Maybe it was wrong of her to think that being Yelena who she is…her kisses would be rough and empty. But oh boy was she wrong.
She heard the water running and started to move around. She printed some pictures of both of them and got them around the house. One of them at the New Year’s party, one of them with Lucky and even one of them of Yelena asleep on the couch and Kate grinning at the camera. Yelena didn’t know about the existence of said picture but she couldn’t deny it looked very domestic.
She called her favorite pizza place and ordered 3 pizzas, one of them extra spicy as Yelena loved to kill her own taste buds. Once she sat down she heard the elevator’s doors opening and Lucky running to her.
“Buddy! I miss you” She hugged him. “Did you behave?” Lucky barked and Kate grinned. “That’s my boy”
“He was perfect, as always,” Grills said from the door. “So…the news are indeed true?” Kate stood up and smiled.
“Yeah man…I’m off the market” He nodded.
“I saw the pictures…isn’t she the one who tried to kill Clint?” He frowned.
“That would be me, yes” They both turned around and saw Yelena there with one of Kate’s oversize shirts on with BISHOP written in the back and her hair wet. “Sorry, I didn’t want to scare you” She smiled and Kate could tell it was a bit forced. “Clint and I are ok now, right darling?” Grills looked at Kate and she nodded smiling.
“Yeah, all a big misunderstanding” She was still nodding and Yelena gave her a weird look. Maybe Kate didn’t think this through…maybe she should’ve told Grills the truth and she wouldn’t have Yelena wearing her shirt right now. And why is she wearing her shirt? Oh no…did she see my costume?
“Sorry, my wife seems to have lost her manners” Yelena gave Grills her hand. “Yelena Bishop, it is nice to meet you Gunter” Gunter? What the hell, Yelena?
“It’s Grills” He chuckled. “It’s nice to meet you too” He shook her hand and he flinched a bit. “You’re strong”
“Sorry” She smiled again and kneeled down to scratch Lucky.
“Ok…well…I ordered us some pizza..” Kate said, looking at Grills who was still a bit awkward. “We can wait for it watching a movie or something”
“Sure, if you guys are ok with it” Grills said and Yelena looked at her.
“Can we watch a scary one?” Kate smiled and nodded. “Yay, you heard that Lucky? Mommy said yes” Grills looked at Kate and Kate blushed bright red.
“Let’s go” She said and cleared her throat.
They walked to the living room and Kate sat down on the big couch while Grills sat down in one of the small ones. Yelena came with Lucky next to her and sat close to Kate and Lucky next to her. Kate could feel Grills eyes on her but she didn’t look. She put her arm around Yelena and pressed play.
This was going perfectly ok, yes. Kate will probably have myocardial problems after this night but who cares right? It really isn’t a problem to have Yelena jumping on top of her and hiding her head in the crock of her neck because she was scared…which was completely bullshit…Kate was 100% sure Yelena has done worse things than the ones playing in the movie.
She understood…Yelena was playing her part as Kate’s wife but still…She thought after the pizza arrived she would be safe but that was so not the case.
“Oh milyy (darling), you ordered my favorite?” Yelena said and kissed Kate right next to her mouth. She had to take a deep breath and cool down before Grills noticed something.
“Of course, you know me” Kate answered chuckling and Grills chuckled. “What?”
“Nothing…it’s just weird…seeing you like this” Yelena raised her eyebrow and Kate replied before she could.
“What? Not fighting?” Kate grinned.
“No...you’re just…” Kate put her hand on top of Yelena’s thigh to stop her from saying anything. “whipped?” At that Yelena actually cackled and Kate gasped.
“What?! I’m so not whipped” Grills grinned.
“I think you are…but dude, it’s fine…Yelena here seems great and I’ve never seen you smile so much” He shrugged. “Not even with Clint”
Kate looked at Yelena and saw her smiling for real this time. She had her legs over Kate’s legs and Kate had left her hand there. “I mean…”
“That is ok my Kate Bishop” Yelena took some hair out of her face. “I like that you’re whipped”
“Well lovebirds…this was very nice but I have to get going” He stood up and the girls were about to move but he raised his hand. “No need, you stay there…I know my way out” He winked at Kate.
“Thank you again man” Kate said and he grinned.
“Pleasure to meet you Yelena” She smiled again and nodded.
“Likewise” He left and the girls heard the elevator’s door closing. They didn’t move but they looked at each other. “So..Kate..”
“Mmmhh” Kate said, she was nervous…Maybe Yelena wanted them to talk now?
“I think there’s something really important we should talk about” Yelena said in a way that was a bit sexier than before or at least that’s what Kate thought. Yelena put her hand on top of Kate’s chest.
“Ok…” She couldn’t say anything else.
“I mean…I’m not really sure how to say this…” Kate gulped. Was Yelena really going to confess her feelings?
“You..” She cleared her throat. “You can just say it?” That look…Kate knew she was not imagining things. Yelena was flirting with her.
“Well…It’s just…” Yelena sighed. “You…”
“Yeah?” Kate felt like she was inching closer, was she?
“You have a Hawkeye costume in your closet” Yelena said and Kate blinked. That was so not what she was hoping to hear, but then Yelena started laughing…and well..maybe that sound was a good thing to hear too. “Please tell me Clint knows” Kate couldn’t help but chuckled with Yelena.
“He does not and we are not going to tell him” Yelena bit her lip. “Say it…say you won’t tell him”
“Oh come on…what if I wear it and we send him a picture?” Kate shook her head no. “You’re no fun” Yelena crossed her arms and it was then that they noticed they hadn’t moved away from each other.
“Sorry…I…” Yelena moved away and she smiled shyly.
“I think it is time for us to go to bed, Kate Bishop” Kate’s eyes almost leave her face at Yelena’s words. And it seemed that Yelena heard herself because she quickly added. “Separately”
“Yeah..yeah…of course…Let’s” They walked together upstairs and didn’t say a word. Yelena opened her bedroom door and looked at Kate. “So…goodnight?”
“Good night dorogoy (my darling)” Kate smiled and went into her room. She looked up the word in her phone but she couldn’t get the writing right. She laid in her bed and thought about Yelena. Was it just her or was Yelena extra weird? If Kate thought about it…she didn’t mind, she was obviously attracted to Yelena, who in their right mind wouldn’t be? But tonight…it seemed as if she was jealous? Could that be? A beep from her phone stopped her from overthinking and looked at it. It was an instagram’s notification. Yelena had tagged her in a picture.
“Huh” She opened it and all air was lost from her lungs. It was a picture of Yelena giving her back to the mirror showing her shirt with the caption New surname fit’s perfectly fine. Kate gulped. “Stop it Kate, focus, you need to keep things professional” She nodded to herself and looked again at the picture. “This fucking sucks” She whined and got into bed.
Kate woke up a bit startled. She was having a dream with Yelena and the shirt…and now she wasn’t sure how she was going to look at Yelena in the face. She needed a shower. A cold one. She checked her phone and there it was, the picture from last night. Only now it had a few comments. Most of them were congrats but Yelena only replied to one.
it’smesonya. 5 hours ago. Devushka, u tebya nakonets-to poyavilsya yastreb, pozdravlyayu, detka. (Girl you finally got the hawk, congrats babe)
Kate looked it up and she didn’t know what to think…has Yelena been talking about her? Does she actually like her?
lena.belova. 1 hour ago. Konechno, ya eto sdelal. Ne mog pozvolit' yey sbezhat' ;) (Of course I did. Couldn't let her scape ;) )
Kate wasn’t sure about anything…so she got up, got that shower and headed downstairs ready for a heart to heart with Yelena. She entered the kitchen and there she was, cooking breakfast as always.
“Morning Kate Bishop” Kate hated when she did that. Yelena was giving her back to her and she could still feel her presence. “Sit sit. you need to eat before we go”
“What’s the rush?” Kate looked at the plate and smiled at the pancakes.
“Did you forget we need to go to Bishop’s security today?” Yelena frowned at her and Kate rolled her eyes.
“Of course not” She ate some. They were freaking delicious. “But we don’t have to rush there, do we?”
“Kate…the sooner the better” Yelena said. “Oh, here you go” Yelena took one of her rings and gave it to her. “We are married so…wedding bands”
“When did you have time to get them?” Kate frowned and put the ring in the right finger. That looks weirdly ok.
“I didn't,” Yelena shrugged. “That is actually mine”
“Oh” And there it was again…the freaking pull. “Yelena…”
“Yes?” She said, looking at her phone.
“We…we said, we’d talk?” Kate tried.
“Yeah…I know but maybe another time” Yelena said like it was not important.
“Are you sure? I mean…I saw the message” Yelena looked at her then. “The one in the picture you posted?”
Yelena nodded. “Kate, you should know better by now” Kate could swear she felt something inside of her breaking. “That is my very good friend Sonya,” Yelena smiled. “I asked her to do that”
“Oh…I see” Yelena turned her back to her and chuckled.
“Hope you didn’t think it was true, Kate Bishop” Kate gulped and got a grip on her emotions.
“No, of course not…I was just wondering, that’s all” Yelena nodded but still didn’t look at her.
“We should go” Yelena said and left the kitchen, leaving Kate behind.
“I’m so stupid” She whispered to herself.
“So here you go” Kate gave Henry their marriage license. They arrived at Bishop’s security after a very awkward and quiet drive, Yelena started acting again. She was holding onto Kate like her life depended on it.
Henry looked at the document and smiled. “I am really happy for you Kate” Kate nodded and forced her smile.
“Thank you” He nodded. “Now…I have access to everything right?” He nodded.
“You’ll have to come to some meetings and start making decisions now” Kate nodded. She knew this was going to be like that. She was not only getting access to everything, now she was the CEO. Now the whole company was hers.
“Of course, I’ll start digging into my moms documents and I can let…” She thought for a moment…”Did my mom have an assistant?” Henry nodded but made a weird face.
“Her assistance left after…well..you know” Kate nodded. “But we can hire someone, that would be no problem”
“That would help, yes” Henry nodded. “But please, whoever you want to hire…I need to see them before we make a decision” He nodded again.
“You already sound like the boss, babe” Yelena said, looking at her and Kate smiled.
“It’s in her blood” Henry said and Kate gulped. She knew Henry meant her father and she didn’t want to think about that…she didn’t want to think about him…because if her mom was telling the truth…he started everything. She felt Yelena’s grip tightened. “Well, Mrs Bishop, I’ll let you and your wife alone in your office”
“Thank you Henry, let me know about those assistance and say hi to your wife for me” He nodded and left.
“Are you ok?” Yelena asked, letting go of her hand and Kate walked to her chair.
“Yes, nothing to talk about” It sounded a bit snappy but she didn’t have the strength to care right now. It seemed Yelena noticed too, because she nodded.
“Can I?” Yelena said, pointing to her computer and Kate nodded.
“But babe, sit on my lap” Yelena raised an eyebrow at her but then nodded. After the incident with Yelena and the mic, Kate had been thinking about the office being bugged. Someone like Fisk would like to know first hand what Kate’s mother was doing here.
“Of course” Yelena did just that and kept her flirty demeanor. She turned on the screen and before she could do something Kate darkened the screen.
“Sorry I just have a headache” Yelena nodded and turned to kiss Kate’s head. Both knew that if they were recording they wouldn’t be able to see the screen now. She looked at what Yelena was looking for and when she found it, she downloaded it and put it into one of her USBs.
“There, 2 tickets for tonight” Yelena grinned. “I’ll go get them printed and I’ll wait for you downstairs” Kate smiled and nodded.
“Sure, I’ll be down in a sec” Yelena got up from Kate and turned to her. For a second Kate thought Yelena was going to kiss her but no, she hugged her again. Hopefully this time, there’s no mic.
Yelena left and looked at Kate just as the door closed. She then looked around. “What the hell, mom?” She sighed and gave a look at the last few documents her mom did. Company wise it seemed that everything was alright and working but Kate wanted to check the finances. She didn’t want any money from Fisk, she wanted to do things right.
As it seemed…every month a huge amount of money went into an account. Probably Fisk’s and 100% that’s the money her mother was paying for her debt. This was no joke…the last payment had been the night she met Yelena.
Yelena’s POV.
They arrived at the house and Yelena went straight to get her laptop. Kate didn’t follow her, she knew after their no talk in the kitchen Kate had been down. It was horrible to say it, but saying it hurt Yelena too. She needs to stay away from her, and that talk…could do the opposite. Even more so after last night. Yelena wasn’t sure what had happened, since she heard there was someone who Kate hadn’t mentioned before, who was taking care of Lucky. It was like this bitter feeling inside her, crawling out. Something came over her and she needed to show Grills that Kate was hers.
This backfired a bit when they were on the couch and she sat almost on Kate’s lap. She was thankful Kate wasn’t really paying attention to her pulse, because the feeling of Kate’s hand on her thigh was making her feel things she really, really shouldn’t. And then…the goodnight moment…she wanted to just grab her and kiss her senseless. Of course, she didn’t but she uploaded the picture. To her surprise Sonya had commented on it and called her right after. Sonya had been teasing her nonstop since she told her about Kate. She even dared to mention the fate of it all. Your sister’s best friend was Hawkeye, so you really need to follow her steps, but maybe a bit further. Yelena chuckled remembering Sonya’s words.
She inserted the USB and opened the file. There they were…the footage of Fisk's wife's house. She looked and looked and then she saw her. Valentina. Yelena gritted her teeth and turned up the volume.
“He needs to stay low now, it’s a miracle he is alive” Valentina said while someone closed a door.
“What happened?” A woman asked. Fisk’s wife, Yelena thought.
“That girl…what was her name…Maya” A man said. “She shoot him”
“That’s unfortunate…do we know if she escaped?” Valentina asked and the man nodded.
“Yes, she left. Boss might know where” He added. “She thinks he is dead”
“And that’s what everyone should think, but send some people after her.” Valentina said and both the man and Fisk’s wife nodded. “It is really important, more so if we are going after that other stupid girl”
“Shouldn’t we go after Hawkeye?” The man asked.
“Yes, but not the one you’re thinking of,” Valentina said. “There’s a new Hawkeye in town and it’s that stupid girl,” Valentina grunted. “Eleanor’s daughter, she is the one to blame for everything”
“Shouldn’t Eleanor be the one to blame?” Fisk 's wife asked. “She is the one who made him go mad”
“Before Maya got to him, Eleanor’s daughter fought him and left him in pretty bad shape” The man said and shrugged.
“Anyway, I’ll get her. I have some people who might be interested in this kind of job” Valentina said.
“What are you going to do to her?” Fisk 's wife asked.
“Easy, I want her gone, dead” Valentina said. Yelena’s anger rose to a new level. She knew Valentina was in on it. She knew she was trying to get some widows to get to Kate. Thankfully, Yelena had made it very clear to all widows that if they dare to come near Kate, that would be the last thing they did. Of course, it wasn’t a problem. All widows who were freed were in debt to Yelena even though she told them not to. The problem was the ones who still needed to be freed. She asked some of them to keep an eye on Kate, and some more to protect Eleanor in jail. Which meant that Valentina knew what she was doing.
Yelena looked forward and looked for the 31st of December record.
“What are you doing here again?” Fisk 's wife asked. “I thought we agreed it would be best if you didn’t come over”
“Danton told me he is waking up” Valentina said.
“It’s not like that, he wakes up but only for a few seconds” Valentina nodded.
“We have a problem…and I need his permission to keep going…” Valentina added.
“What problem?”
“One of my…former workers…is protecting Kate Bishop” Yelena smiled at the rage she could see in Valentina’s face.
“And? Why don’t you just take care of them?” The woman asked.
“It’s not that easy…not with her…” Yelena grinned. “I might need to handle this differently”
“Then do it”
“Be extra careful and don’t let anyone in” Valentina added. “I have to make a trip”
“Of course, you know me, Valentina” She nodded. “You’ve been family to us for years”
“chertova suka (fucking bitch), she worked for him the whole time” Yelena shut her laptop frustrated. Kate’s head appeared at the door.
“Hey…you alright?” Kate asked. “Did you find something?”
“Yeah…” Yelena took a deep breath. “Valentina works for Fisk…all this time I’ve been working for him” Yelena got up and punched the wall.
“Wow…easy” Kate got near her. “You didn’t know that” Kate took her hand in hers and looked at it. Yelena felt the heat radiating from the touch.
“I know..it’s just…he hurt you…” Yelena said.
“He did, you didn’t” Yelena looked at Kate’s eyes. “Well, actually you did. My ribs are still healing” Yelena chuckled then.
“I promise you Kate, I won’t let any of them near you” Yelena said and Kate hugged her. She let her face in Kate’s neck and inhaled deeply. Yelena had never felt like this…being in Kate’s arms felt like home.
“And I promise you, I’ll do my best to kick some ass with you” Kate said and Yelena chuckled.
She moved away and looked at Kate. “I need to go near the house and get some info…might take a few days”
“What do you mean?” Kate frowned. “Am I not going with you?”
“Kate…” Yelena started but Kate interrupted her.
“No…nothing of Kate…you said we were a team, Yelena” Kate raised her voice. She was going to start a fight again and Yelena didn’t think twice and hugged her again. “What..?”
“Kate…relax…and hear me out ok?” She didn’t let go. “I need to do this alone for two simple reasons” Kate was quiet so Yelena continued. “One, you need to go to work now” Kate grunted and Yelena chuckled. “And two, I’m only going to be staking out on the house from the building in front of the house” She moved a bit away and looked at Kate’s beautiful eyes. “Just that, promise”
“Ok..sorry…” Kate put her forehead to Yelena’s and they both closed their eyes. Yelena sighed and moved away.
“We are a team Bishop” Kate smiled and nodded.
“Right now, we are actually team Bishop as you’re my wife…” Kate grinned and Yelena laughed.
Yelena’s been two days on this rooftop and she hasn’t got any info. Not people coming in…nothing at all. Curtains were closed completely and it seemed they had soundproof everything because she couldn’t hear one bit with her equipment. She was frustrated and cold. She took her phone out and texted Kate.
To мой маленький ястреб: No news here. Everything alright there?
Fromмой маленький ястреб: That sucks. All good here but pretty boriiiing, come home?
Last two days Kate would ask her the same thing and both days Yelena would feel that feeling inside her chest. Home, she has never really had a home…only that time with Natasha and their parents in Ohio. She was scared to get used to that feeling knowing she couldn’t stay with her.
Toмой маленький ястреб: Tomorrow maybe, I need to get something…
From мой маленький ястреб: Fiiineee.
Yelena chuckled and looked back at the building. “Oh come on…” She looked at a truck parking in front of the door. It looked like one of those tracksuit mafia. “Not those idiots”. Two men knocked on the door and the same man from the recordings opened. Yelena turned up the volume of her hearing equipment.
“Bro, we saw Kate Bishop” One of them said.
“And? Did you get her?” They both shook their heads no. And he closed the door behind him, leaving the three of them outside. “And why the fuck no?”
“She wasn’t alone bro, what if that’s the one who the boss lady warned us about?” She wasn’t alone? What? Yelena thought.
The man took out his phone and showed them a picture of Yelena. “Valentina is a very smart woman…she should be scared of me”
“Was it her?” He asked them and they looked at the picture.
“No…she was taller” They both nodded. “Yeah and hair color…the other one is a brunette like her”
“Kate Bishop…you have some explaining to do” Yelena said and gritted her teeth. No she doesn’t, you idiot, she is not really yours. A voice in her head reminded her.
“Where did you see her?” The man asked.
“Bishop’s security building” He nodded. “Some other guys have seen her over there too”
“blyat' (Fuck)” Yelena said. So they’ve been following her. Yelena couldn’t believe herself…she’d never miss something like this. Maybe her feelings were clouding her mind and it was affecting her job.
“Well, keep an eye on her and if you ever find her alone, take her” The man told them.
“Sure…but it won’t be easy…Kate Bishop is strong too” They nodded. Were they scared of Kate? Yelena smirked. They should be even more so now that she’s been training with her.
“Don’t be a pussy, it’s just one woman” Yelena rolled her eyes at them.
“Don’t push it or you’ll see what one woman can do” Yelena said.
“And remember you idiots, we need to get her before Valentina comes back” They nodded and Yelena took her things and left.
Those idiots were following Kate and Kate has been with someone Yelena didn’t know about. She was so stupid, Kate could be in real danger right now. Why would she leave her alone? She took her bike and went back to Kate’s house. She wasn’t getting any more info anyway.
“Kate?” She arrived at the house and screamed for her. “Are you here?” Kate appeared at the top of the stairs and grinned at Yelena, who couldn’t help but smile back at her. “Honey I’m home” She joked and Kate chuckled.
“Hey, I thought you said you were coming back tomorrow?” Kate came down and stood in front of Yelena unsure of what to do so Yelena didn’t think much about it and gave her a quick hug.
“It is actually your fault that I’m back early” Yelena said and they moved to the kitchen.
“What…you missed me?” Kate smirked at her but Yelena could see that she actually wondered if she did.
“Not the point,” Yelena shrugged. “Why on earth are you going around with a brunette I don’t know anything about?” Kate arched an eyebrow.
“Jealous?” What happened here? Why is Kate so cocky all of a sudden?
“Katherine Elizabeth Bishop, stop the crap” Yelena scowled at her. “Who the hell is that woman?”
“Jezz, ok…she is Jane and she is my new assistant” Kate said and raised both of her hands.
“What? and you didn’t mention this to me, why?” Yelena was a bit angry at the moment. Kate was a genius, but sometimes she could be so naive.
“And why should I tell you about this?” Kate snapped back. “You haven’t told me anything from your little mission”
“chert voz'mi (for fuck’s sake)” Yelena glared at her. “I haven’t told you anything because I didn’t have anything to tell like I freaking told you to by message Kate” Yelena raised her voice. “Stop acting like a brat”
“I’m not acting like a brat, you’re…you’re the one keeping things from me” Kate said and Yelena raised her eyebrow.
“What am I keeping from you huh?” Yelena dared her, crossing her arms.
“You…ugh ok…sorry” Kate looked down. “I thought you weren’t telling me the truth,” Yelena sighed.
“Kate…if you don’t trust me…” Kate ran to Yelena’s side and took her hands.
“I do, I do trust you. I promise” Kate apologized. “It’s just…I don’t like to feel like this…like everyone thinks I’m a child…and more so you…I don’t want you to see me like a child” Yelena nodded and squeezed Kate’s hand.
“I do not see you as a child Kate Bishop” Kate nodded. “I see you as the annoying adult that you are” Kate chuckled then. “Now…this Jane…please tell me everything you know about her”
“She is great, and don’t worry I looked into her before hiring her” Yelena nodded. “Everything was clean, nothing out of the ordinary”
“Yes, ok…but do you understand that if you look me up you’ll find nothing?” Yelena added. “I need to make sure this Jane is not a widow undercover”
“But…you told me…” Yelena nodded. She explained everything to Kate…from the loving family in Ohio…to being kidnapped and raised as an assassin, and of course about the subjugation agent she was under and how she’s been helping widows.
“There are some out there who are not safe yet…” Kate looked scared for a second.
“But…if she was a widow…why hasn't she killed me?” Kate asked and Yelena shrugged.
“Maybe the order was to keep an eye on you for now…who knows…” Kate nodded.
“Ok..so…tomorrow it’s bring your wife to work day, huh?” Kate asked and Yelena chuckled.
“It seems so, I promise I’ll behave” Yelena said and Kate nodded. “And there’s something I need to tell you” Kate waited for her to continue. “I know about Jane because I heard the idiots from the tracksuit mafia talking about it”
“What? Those guys?” Kate frowned.
“They’ve been following you Kate..” Kate nodded.
“Ok…then I guess we should change house…” Yelena thought it was actually a great idea. “My apartment is fixed so we can move there…the only thing is…there’s only one bed so…”
“I can sleep on the couch, do not worry” Yelena added and Kate bit her lip nodding.
“Anything else?” Yelena nodded.
“Yeah but that we knew…Valentina is away and they want you dead” Kate nodded.
“Seems about right” Kate sighed. “Oh, I forgot to tell you…look” Kate took her phone and showed Yelena what it seemed like a gossip page. She looked at it and saw pictures of them with a small article saying they’ve eloped. Yelena took a deep breath…there it was, the picture of the kiss. She hadn’t seen it. There was no doubt at all that anyone that saw that picture would think it was real. The way they’re both clinging to each other…Yelena cleared her throat.
“This is good, right?” Kate nodded. “Good”
“Emm…hey…I was about to train for a bit. Want to join me before going to the other house?” Kate said and Yelena nodded.
“Sure, show me what you got” They smiled at each other.
“Kate, I didn’t expect you here so soon” Someone who Yelena already figured was Jane said. “Oh, you came with your wife today” She smiled at Yelena and shook her hand. “It is really nice to finally meet you”
“You too” Yelena said. “How did you know I’m her wife?” At that Jane chuckled and Yelena looked at Kate who looked completely red.
“Kate has some pictures in her office so…it was an easy guess” Jane smiled at Yelena and she wasn’t sure what to think of her.
“Babe, can you show me those pictures?” Yelena said sweetly and Kate nodded.
“Jane, please don’t let anyone bother me while my wife is here” Kate said and Yelena had to look away not to laugh.
“Of course” She smiled and sat down again. They went inside Kate’s office and closed the door. Yelena looked around and saw three pictures of them together around the office and one more picture on top of her desk, but this one was only Yelena’s. She didn’t know Kate had taken this picture. It was one of those days that they took Lucky for a walk together and sat down in a park. Lucky was licking her face and she was laughing.
“Sorry…I just…” Kate tried to talk.
“It’s ok…it is a nice picture” Yelena said, not looking at her.
“I kind of love it…it makes me smile” Kate said and Yelena looked at her. She was fully red and Yelena smiled. Kate cleared her throat then. “So…how do we know if she is one of them?”
“Kate!!” Yelena whispered.
“Oh, don’t worry I took all of the mics and cameras from here” Kate shrugged and Yelena froze. So…what she said about the picture…
“Ok…well…I need to push her a bit and see if she comes out of her shell…but that would take a bit of time…for today I would like to just hang in here with you and keep an eye on her” Kate nodded. “You look very professional, you know?”
Kate chuckled. “Come on, you’ve seen me with suits before” Yelena shrugged.
“Yeah I know, but you look…I don’t know…like you know what you’re doing” Yelena smiled.
“That’s good because actually I have no clue” They both laugh. “So…apart from her? What are we doing?”
“Well, I have some widows checking where Valentina went…and we’ll have to wait for something big to enter Fisk’s house,” Yelena said.
“And what are you going to do once you’re inside the house?” Kate wondered.
“Easy, I’m going to end him and Val with him” Yelena said with a bit more anger than normal.
“Yelena…you’re going to kill them?” Yelena nodded. “You can’t”
“Yes, I can and I will” Kate frowned. “I’m sorry Kate, I’m not one of your heroes…I’ve killed people before and you know it”
“Yeah…but I don’t want you to get more blood in your hands…” Kate sighed. “Not because of me”
Yelena didn’t know what to say…Kate’s words were something foreign for her. She’s never had anyone who cared about that…She could feel the emotion getting to her. This woman in front of her had crumbled all of her walls and defenses and jumped right into her, and it was impossible to get her out. Not now…and possibly…not ever.
Someone knocked and Yelena frowned. Jane appeared all smiles.
“Sorry but…I was wondering if you’d like me to go get lunch?” Jane said.
“No need Jenny, I’m taking my wife out for lunch today” Yelena said and Kate rolled her eyes smiling.
“Oh…but Kate has a meeting right after lunch” Yelena noticed she didn’t correct her.
“That’s ok…she’ll be here right on time” Jane nodded and left.
“What is it with you and saying people’s names wrong?” Kate chuckled and Yelena shrugged.
“Have you been going out with her for lunch?” Yelena asked and Kate nodded.
“Yeah, a couple of times, why?” Yelena thought for a moment. Something was not adding up. The losers from the tracksuit mafia didn’t know who Jane was. If Val sent her…they’d know right?
“I’m not sure she is a widow…but I still don’t like her” Yelena said. “So please, be careful”
2 months and Yelena was going crazy. She checked everything about Jane and she was clean. Too clean maybe. There was a voice inside of her telling her that the only reason why she wanted her to be dangerous was so she could kick her butt and tell her to stay away from Kate. But so far she has had nothing. Nothing except these stupid feelings inside of her.
This thing between them…it was scary but thrilling. They haven’t crossed any lines but there has been more flirtatious comments from both sides. Yelena could see Kate checking her out every time they trained together, which was one of the reasons for Kate not to win against her.
“Come on…this is not fair” Kate whined. She was on the floor and Yelena had her hands next to Kate’s head and locked her legs with her thighs. “You know this is cheating”
“Why is it cheating Kate Bishop?” Yelena smirked. She knew what she was doing but Kate also needed to learn not to have any distractions while she was in the middle of a fight.
“You know…” Kate’s cheeks were blushed. “You…like that…it’s just not..”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about” Yelena tightened her hold on Kate’s hands. “Come on wifey, I am a bit tired of being on top” Kate gasped and Yelena chuckled.
Kate flipped them over with one move of her waist and got up. Yelena could see the redness coming up Kate’s neck. “Hey, someone’s calling you” Kate said and Yelena frowned. She reached her phone and picked it up.
“Hello?” Yelena smiled at hearing Sonya’s voice.
“Hey” Sonya sounded out of breath.
“Are you alright?” Yelena frowned and Kate sat next to her. Yelena looked at her and put Sonya on speaker. “Kate’s listening”
“Yelena…I need you to get to Russia asap” Kate looked at Yelena. “Valentina…she has your mom”
“What?” Yelena felt a shiver. “How did she…Sonya…how?” Kate put her hand on Yelena’s back.
“She brought people with her…at first she went into your house alone…but after a while people broke in and took her”
“Is she ok? Did she hurt her?” Yelena could feel the rage coming.
“She was unconscious”
“What about Alexei?” Yelena was sure her dad wouldn’t let her take her so easily.
“I’m with him…it seems she put something on his drink..he is ok now” Yelena sighed.
“Do you have someone following her?” Yelena could feel Kate’s eyes on her.
“Oksana and Jess are following closely” Yelena nodded.
“I’ll be there as soon as I can” Yelena looked at Kate and saw worry in her eyes. “I’m sorry Kate Bishop…but I need to go”
“Let me go with you…” Kate pleaded. “This is my fault”
“As much as I’d love to meet you Kate…That’s exactly what Valentina wants…” Sonya said and Yelena looked at Kate.
“She is right” Kate bit her lip and looked at the floor. “Thanks Sonya, Voz'mi mne papu korolya (take care of papa for me)”
“YA budu, skoro uvidimsya (I will, see you soon)” Yelena hung up and started to move around the apartment to gather her things.
“I’m deeply sorry” Yelena heard Kate sniffling and turned around. Kate had tears in her eyes. “This is all because of me…I shouldn’t have let you help me…I…” Yelena got closer to her and hugged her.
“This is not your fault milyy (darling), this is all Valentina” Yelena cleaned Kate’s tears from her face with her hand. “This is a power move, she is trying to teach me who’s in control”
“But that wouldn’t have happened if…” Yelena put her finger in Kate’s lips.
“Shh, Kate…” They looked at each other's eyes. It broke Yelena to see the pain in Kate’s eyes. “You said you trusted me, right?” Kate nodded. “Then trust me on this, I’m not blaming you…this is not your fault”
“Ok…but I want to go with you” Yelena sighed. Kate was stubborn to her core.
“You heard what Sonya said” Yelena turned around. “This is most likely a trap to get you”
“What if now that you’re leaving she comes after me here?” Kate moved so she was in front of Yelena again. “Not that I’m scared, cause I’m not”
“That’s why I’m gonna ask Grandpa Clint to visit you for a while” Kate growled. “This is not because I don’t trust you” Kate crossed her arms. “But two hawks are better than one”
Kate sighed but nodded. “Fine, but please…be careful”
“Of course, I always am” Yelena smiled. “I am coming back for you Kate” Yelena looked at Kate and saw her blush. “We are a team, and we are going to kick Fisk’s ass together,” Kate chuckled and nodded.
Yelena took everything and walked to the door. “Yelena…” She turned around. “Give them hell” Yelena grinned at Kate’s words. She had a feeling those weren’t exactly the words she was going to say, but Yelena wasn’t sure she could deal with the real ones. And just like that…Yelena left.
