The Sorting
Chapter - Sorting
After the train had arrived, they’d all been sorted into alphabetical order to get sorted into their Houses.
Mae saw Peter and James together further back in the group, excited.
She was standing with two girls who seemed to know each other pretty well, but she couldn't focus on anything.
Mae couldn’t help but feel nervous, surrounded by strangers, not even near any of the friends she’d made on the train.
Sirius was the first one of them that would have to go, and Mae sent him a quick thumbs up as he took the stool.
"Sirius Black... hm..." The sorting hat said.
Sirius showed no sign of worry, simply smirking at whatever the hat was saying.
"Well then, GRYFFINDOR!"
The table erupted into cheers and Mae clapped for Sirius, who settled in an empty section of the table, shooting a thumbs up back at her before pointing to the bench next to him.
After Sirius, Mae tuned out of the sorting, though she saw James pay attention when a young redheaded girl got sorted unto Gryffindor,
She didn't realize how out of it she was until she heard Remus get called.
He took the stool a bit more hesitantly than Sirius had, but it took no time at all for the hat to declare he would also be a lion.
Mae watched as he joined Sirius at the Gryffindor table, the two grinning at each other.
"Mae MacMillan."
Mae took a deep breath before ascending the stairs and sitting on the stool.
"Ahhh, you care deeply for your brother, are you sure you don't want to join him? Hufflepuff is a great place for those with big hearts. No? Well, no matter. You are not cunning enough for Slytherin nor focused enough for Ravenclaw. I suppose you're right then, I see an adventurous streak in you, a loyalty you would be willing to fight for, so I suppose GRYFFINDOR!"
Mae grinned, jumping up from the stool and racing to the table, sitting down across from Sirius and Remus.
"Congrats Mae," Sirius said with a smile.
"Thank Merlin I'm not stuck alone with Black," Remus added with a grin.
The three talked amongst themselves until they heard Peter's name called.
Peter was on the stool the longest of all of them, and let out an audible sigh when the hat finally announced "GRYFFINDOR!"
He joined the boys on the other side of the table, and they all turned to see James, who was up next.
Mae caught James eye as the hat went on, and he grinned.
James was on the stool the shortest of all of them, mere seconds after the hat touched his head it screamed "GRYFFINDOR!"
Mae cheered, glad she had nothing to fear about her friend not being by her side.
James came and slid into the seat right next to Mae, giving her a high five.
“Got a bit nervous, the whole lot of you getting Gryffindor, added pressure,” James said with a smirk.
Mae rolled her eyes.
“I doubt it phased you Potter,” Mae said.
“Pureblood Potter in a twist over his House, wait until the letters from my parents pour in,” Sirius added with a grin.
“Is it really going to be that bad?” Peter asked.
Remus grinned.
“So much to learn Petey,” James replied.
Mae smiled seeing the boys all getting along so well.
She had a group of friends already.
Mae turned back to the sorting as the boys kept talking.
“Well, I want Mae’s opinion,” Remus said, and James tapped her shoulder.
Mae turned to find the boys all looking towards her.
"We may have started planning our first prank M, but of course I can't do it without you..." James said with a smirk.
Mae had seen three other girls get sorted into Gryffindor, but before she had time to introduce herself, James had a plan, of course.
Mae grinned and agreed to follow the boys, throwing one last cursory glance at the Great Hall before following the boys into the hallway.
