It was just a joke; Sirius was going to jump out laughing in a few moments talking about how great a joke this was. Chapter 2

Chapter 2:

James Potter had been having a normal if not boring day at his job as an Auror. Since the fall of Voldemort so many years before there had not been nearly as much work for him to do which was good because it allowed everyone to truly grieve for those lost in the war. For James that was his one-year-old son Harry. On Halloween night in 1981, the Potter’s secret keeper Peter Pettigrew betrayed them to Lord Voldemort. When he arrived at the house neither James nor his wife Lily had their wands on them and while they both fought as hard as they could He who must not be named managed to stun them both and make away with Harry.

Nobody is certain how Voldemort died but one month later Harry and Voldemort’s bodies were found, and James and Lily haven’t been the same since. While they had done their best to be in the present for their younger son, Mark, a dark cloud still loomed over them on days of importance. Today was one of those days it would have been the last day of Harry’s fifth year of Hogwarts. All day James kept replaying in his mind how he could have done something different that fateful day to have saved his son.

James was soon brought out of his thoughts by a memo repeatedly striking him in the head. It simply said

Report to the Department of Mysteries at once.

It is a matter of great importance

Milly Brown Head of Department of Mysteries

So, James put away all the paperwork that was out on his desk and left immediately. While curious as to what could be so important that the head of the department would personally send him a letter for, he could never have prepared himself for what he saw when he walked in.

There was a boy laying on a stretcher in the middle of the room. At first glance James thought it was Mark by the looks of the unruly black hair and the dark skin however on closer inspection he realized that this boy was a few years older than Mark. At that moment Milly Brown walked out of her office and upon seeing James said, “Why don’t you come into my office for a bit more privacy for this discussion,” James was extremely confused as he entered the office to the point that he barely even took notice of the plain almost homey atmosphere of the office. Once they were both seated the first thing out of his mouth was,” Who was that kid and why is he here?” referring to the extremely secure part of the ministry. Milly took a very deep breath and prepared herself for the conversation to come. “What do you know about Alternate Universes?” she cautiously asked.
