Spring Ball
"And tonight we have a special treat for you lot." Ron's voice echos through the room, "As the band we planned for the evening came down with Dragon Pox's we have someone different playing for us."
Looking over to Harry, his tie is undone and laying on the table and his leg bounces, shaking the table ever so slightly. I press my hand to his lower thigh in urge to calm him down.
Harry looks over to me bites his bottom lip with his teeth. "What if I fuck this up Gin?" He asks.
"You won't." I say certain, he's amazing. Ben is a the best drummer I know and I've never seen anyone play guitar like Neil can, "You're amazing."
"You say that. But god knows what I'm like in-front of an audience." Harry says, his tan face draining another shade lighter.
"Harry you'll do great." I nod my head to him and take my hand of him, smiling reassuringly. He looks at me with furrowed eyebrows, worry lines gracing his face. For someone so handsome he's the most nervous person I know.
"Damn right he will." Ben's dark voice pops up from behind Harry, clapping him on the back. Ben smirks and sits down. "We've got this in the bag Potter. I'm ready, your ready. The whole damn world is ready for us."
"Yeah what he said." Neil sits beside me, nodding to Ben, grinning too. A piece of his gelled chestnut hair falling out of place. "Now let's go kick some Hogwarts arse aye?"
"And without further a do. Here is, Harry Potter, Ben Walker and Neil Arthur." Hermione's voice crowds over everyone.
"Go knock them dead Potter." I wink to him as his gets up, undoing a couple more buttons on his shirt, sweat dripping down his shirt.
With one more wary glance Harry's gone, tripping over Hermione's chair with a bashful grin and onto the stage, guitar snug against his shirt.
Ben winks over to Nessa and struts over to the stage, taking place behind the drums, smirking at the scene before him, obviously liking the fact that everyone is below him, cocky Bulgarian. Neil is the last to clamber on, kissing a blushing Amber on the cheek.
Harry takes a moment to look out, the tables now folding back into the hall's walls. Girls crawling out of their food coma to witness the Hottest boys of Hogwarts play some music, that whether it's good or not won't matter because they'll be too busy watching how their hands move against the rhythm. The boys of Hogwarts on the other hand look like that they would rather put some joggers on and do anything else then be here.
"Come on Ging. Let's go watch our boys." Nessa states from the side of me, picking her dress up and standing, carefully gliding over to the front of the stage.
I follow suit, murmuring the words, "Your boy and Harry. There is no our boys remember?"
"Yeah, okay." She waves me off dismissively, knowing that I don't believe a word she says.
Harry coughs awkwardly through the mic, struggling to move the stand up to meet his lips. "Alright Hogwarts." His voice booms into the room. "Enjoying yourselves?"
A collective yes sounds through the room. Harry chuckles and looks out, all previous nerves washing away leaving a confident man who looks fucking gorgeous, "I know we're not first choice but, I think we will make do."
"Hell yeah we will Potter." Ben's voice agrees from the drums. "Now stop with the dramatics and let's get this show on the road shall we?"
Harry grins and turns to Ben, "Let's do this."
He looks to Neil with a nod, Neil nods back and Harry's grin gets wider.
"Don't go falling in love with him now," I joke to Nessa, watching as she stares at Ben with something I have never seen, so much passion and love holding in her eyes.
"Already have Mate." She whispers, closing her eyes.
Before I have time to even comprehend this new investment Harry strums, and my god does the notes he rattles out take me by survive.
In truth I forgot just how good he was, how rough but delightful his voice came out as he sings. His voice is sultry and low, and just so sexy. He makes everything in every room stop when he sings, like a melody that slows time. His voice is magic.
"Fucking hell he's incredible." Ron says from beside me, wrapping a arm around Hermione as we watch Harry own the stage, gaining more and more confidence with each cheer.
"Yes, he is," I agree, smiling as he leans backwards and strums down his guitar in such a silly manner but still managing to keep in beat and in tune with everyone.
"He looks like a Rockstar." Nessa whispers to no-one in particular as the crowd starts jumping up and down. Harry scans the room, grinning like a fool as he grips the microphone to belt out his last couple lyrics. His eyes meets mine with a crackle of electricity as a round of applause ripples through the room.
A couple songs later, the crowd is amazing, Nessa snuck her shoes in with mine a plant pot and is now dancing my my side, swaying her hips to the rhythm effortlessly.
"So this is one that I wrote, a couple weeks ago," Harry says breathlessly, tugging his hair back.
"I'm a problem, I'm a killer, I'm the cure, I guess
I'm the end, I'm the beginning, the apocalypse
I am something from nothing, I heard 'em say
Rags to the riches, your best mistake
I'm the future, I'm the relic, I'm the 'not there yet'
Oh, oh, oh I am- forevermore I'll be"
Harry looks over to me, almost stating that this song, in this moment is about him, and how he feels.
"What you wanna believe
All I know, it's too late for me to change your mind
What you wanna believe
I'll let go, let you decide
What you wanna believe
What you wanna believe"
The crowds begin to bop along with the music, almost seeming to catch along that this is him, this is what Harry is on the inside. Ben looks over to us, and I can almost see the proud glint in his eye at the man singing. The same glint I'm pretty sure we all carry.
"I'm the blaze, I'm the siren, I'm the exit door
I'm the cape, I'm the villain, I'm the metaphor
Or I'm a good gun in a bad man's war,
I paved the way
I'm a left hook, I'm a battered jaw, I'm the pain
I'm a preacher, I'm a sinner, I'm a broken lord
Oh, oh, oh I am- forevermore I'll be"
The crowd starts to get ready, the second chorus seeming to be catchy as they sing along with Harry for the rest of the song, never missing a beat. Some even shed a tear as they connected to this song more then most would. Because we know, we've felt this, I've felt this, Harry's felt this.
At the end of the song, a roar of clapping chanted through the hall, some screaming for other originals, Harry winked to a couple people, promising that more originals were on the way.
When Ben says, "Now your in for a slower pace of song ladies and gents, now grab your partner and get dirty on the dance floor if yknow what I mean." A couple songs later. He winks to Nessa before clapping Harry on the back and saying something to him.
Harry grins to him and nods, with one last curt nod Neil, Ben jumps down from the stage, doing up his button up on his suit jacket as he walks quickly over to us.
Moving out of the way of Nessa, I grin knowingly as Ben rushes past me, heading towards the girl who seemed to be too stunned to speak as Ben grabs her by the waist and drops her into a dip, smashing his lips to hers.
Nessa is frozen for a second before she clasps her hand into Ben's hair, moving her fingers through it. Giving them a second to finally get over what they've been aching to do for years really, the hall rumbles with catcalls and cheering. Obviously I'm not the only one who ships these two.
Seeming to come back to the world, Nessa pulls away, whispering something to Ben before he pulls her back up. "My baby now you fuckers, paws off." Ben shouts, smirking up to the room.
Harry smirks telling Neil to get off the stage and in his words get his innings, so it's just him and his now acoustic guitar. He pulls up a black stool from nowhere in particular, lowering his microphone to his height now, ruffling his hair for the millionth time tonight.
Neil pulls Amber onto the dance floor, Ben and Nessa following suit, along with Hermione and Ron. Leaving me on the sidelines. Not for long though as a Ravenclaw beater walks towards me, his black tie swinging in front of him. "Wanna dance Sweetheart?" He asks, his dirty blonde hair creating quite the contrast from the black suit that fills him up in just the right amount.
I bite my lip the music already starting, looking to Harry, I see him already staring at me. His eyes fly to the boy infront of me with his hand out and Harry's jaw tightens. He takes one breath and looks back to me with a singular nod and smile.
I put on my best smile and accept Ravenclaws hand, using him to stand myself up. I hold onto his arm as we grace the dance floor. Mystery boy's arm never strays below the waist as we get in position.
Beautiful plucks on the guitar begin to play, Harry's voice singing out to the crowd as the lights die, only candle light shining through out the room.
"Whenever I'm weary
From the battles that rage in my head
You make sense of madness
When my sanity hangs by a thread
I lose my way but still you seem to understand
Now and forever
I will be your man"
Harry's soft voice follows through the microphone as we spin around the room, Ravenclaw holding me just that little bit more close.
"So..." I start, not knowing his name, now realising I'm dancing with this complete and utter stranger. This gorgeous complete and utter stranger though, sharp jawline, pearly white teeth, hazel eyes. Oh yes he was gorgeous.
"Jack. Jack Swindon. And your Ginny Weasley." He smirks slightly, turning us around the room.
"Because that isn't creepy at all. Jack Swindon." I smile, relaxing just a little bit more.
"Well what can I say, I know my beautiful women." He winks, making snort even more.
What a stupid, funny boy. "Well Jack Swindon, what do you know about me then? Apart from the fact I'm pretty of course."
"Your beautiful. Not pretty," he starts, and I roll my eyes at his failure to woo me, "your a 5th year, erm your best mate is staring at me right now, with the guy who is a transfer from dumstrang." I follow Jack's eyes to find Nessa staring at us, her eyebrows furrow and she looks over in the distance.
Following her eyesight I watch Harry stare at us, well more like glare at Jack as he looks in the hall opposite direction, rambling things about me.
Harry looks disgusted, angry even but most of all Harry Potter looks hurt, a stab in the heart hurt, like he was just ripped apart. And it fucking hurts to see him like this, like the only thing that could save him right now was a trip to a cliff.
But he carries on playing, his music still filling the room as he strums his guitar and fake smiles through it.
"Now I can rest my worries and always be sure
That I won't be alone anymore
If I'd known you were there all the time
All this time,"
Harry looks away from me and my stomach fills with a sickening feeling. It's not like I'm doing anything wrong, but in my heart I'm I know I'm leading on a stranger while staring at the guy of my dreams who coincidentally is my brothers best friend.
"I'm sorry I can't do this," I whisper, standing back from a smiling Jack.
His face drops and he nods, "I expected as much. It's the singer right?" He nods to Harry, "your in love with him."
I wince and nod my head, "yeah." I murmur, "as stupid as it sounds, I've loved him all my life."
Jack chuckles and shakes his head, "it's not stupid, or pathetic as you think it is," he says, asking a silent question with his raised eyebrows, can I continue? I nod and he steps in cautiously, grabbing my waist again and pulling me in, keeping the distance as we roam around the room.
"Yeah it is." I reply, shaking my head and biting my lip, "here I am in a one-sided love thingy, confessing it to a complete stranger who tried hitting on me not two minutes ago." I groan and pull my head into his shoulder, how pathetic.
"It's not." Jack murmurs.
"It's not what?" I respond, the end of the song coming at a quickening pace.
"It's not pathetic, and it's definitely not one sided. At least not from my view. All night that guy up there has been staring. And when I took your waist he glared at me like I was touching something that was his. Too precious for anyone else." Jack says, daring to smile easily to me as he says, " and not because your his brothers little sister but because that guy is quite in love you. And your too stupid to see it." And with that Jack and his bluntness is gone and Harry is announcing a break, switching the boom box on and letting the 80's hits playing.
I swallow the information Jack let on and shake my head, refusing to let myself believe any of that load of shit. Sitting down I clasp Bens flask he's tapped under the little table against a wall and probably take too much of a swig.
I wince as Nessa waltz's over, a scowl on her perfect face, "who was that." She says, holding her hand out for the flask.
I hand it over with a huff and say, "no one. Just a Ravenclaw."
"Seems like Ravenclaw dude wanted a bit of you." Ben appears, joining in with the conversation, his hand wrapping itself around Nessa's waist like it's the most natural thing in the world and that he's been doing it all of his life. "Is someone getting some?" He wiggles his eyebrows suggestively, before taking a gulp of the whiskey, shoving it into his pocket so it cools and down and refills. How I love charms.
"Who's getting some?" A breathless voice breaks out from behind me, I close my eyes of course Harry's right behind me, breathless probably sweating yet smelling as good as ever.
"Ginny apparently, did you see her and Jack Swindon." Ben says, nodding to me, smirking slightly.
"Oh so that's him. Yeah I did." Harry says, I turn from the group, expecting Harry to be scowling but he's grinning, water bottle in his hand, "Seems a bit out of your league." When I frown at him, he stutters out, "I mean your prettier then him. Not saying he's pretty. But you are, you're gorgeous." He winces, moving so he's next to me instead, I turn back around, praying that no one can feel the blush spreading across my cheeks.
"Okay- anyways. Great set Harry." Nessa drifts out after a awkward pause, "you Neil and Ben should book some things."
Just as Harry's about to shake his head, Bens eyes light up and grins, "hey that's not a bad idea. We could make money off this y'know. You've wrote a lot of songs, so has Neil we could make this like a weekly thing."
"I'm not so sure mate. It's just a little bit too- eye focusing then what I can comprehend." Harry says, taking his water bottle and taking another sip, his Adam's Apple bobbing with each sip.
"But it's good attention Cap. Not none of that Voldemort rubbish, good eye-opening attention which lets be honest we deserve." Ben urges, and to my utter disbelief Harry looks like he's contemplating it, seriously considering the going back on stage whenever he's needed just to sing a couple of songs.
"I'll see. Slughorn did say something about livening up the Slugclub." Harry says, ruffling his hair again.
"Well done Potter. You got some mad fingers." Ron claps Harry on the back.
Ben chuckles before saying, "that's what she said."
Hermione rolls her eyes and hugs Harry, "well done Harry."
"I'm just saying that if it wasn't for us. You wouldn't be on there right now." Ron says smugly, dragging me towards the conversation he's having with Ben and Neil who's just appeared out of nowhere.
"And I'm just saying that you would be fucked if it wasn't for us." Neil says, holding his hands up.
Rolling my eyes I look to Harry, seeing him smile and laugh at something in the distance. Maybe sensing that someone is looking at him Harry looks down to me, raising his eyebrow at me.
I smile up at him, and silently Harry begrudgingly opens his arms very slowly, very un-Harry like. My smile grows and practically jumps into his arms, lifting my arms around his neck, while his hands place on my waist, pulling me in further. When I'm in heels I can just reach over his shoulder, meaning I can rest my chin there while I whisper very lowly the words, "I'm proud of you Potter."
Harry just squeezes me harder and let's go, grinning at me, "why thankyou Weasley."
I roll my eyes at his new found cockiness that seems to appear more then not lately and push him slightly, "take that look off your face. You aren't that good." We both it's a lie, he's brought this night to life.
"Alright men let's go finish this night shall we?" Neil hollers out, pressing a chaste kiss to Amber and walking off, a grinning, swollen lips Ben follows suit, blowing a kiss to Nessa, who rolls her eyes and catches it, grinning none the less.
Before I have chance to go take my place under the stage Harry's fingers grab onto my hand, pulling me in. He presses a kiss to my cheek and whispers, "save your last dance for me, yeah?"
I nod, closing my eyes as Harry goes, his warmth fading away.
A grinning Nessa O'brien meets me at the stage, her face smug as she bumps shoulders with me, "just friends huh." She says, her dark eyebrows raised, "could of fooled me."
"Shut up. Just because your so smitten with kitty." I remark, watching the boys (Harry) set up again, "we're just friends. Just friends." I repeat.
Before Nessa can find something snarky to reply with I point to the guys and say, "look they're about to start, better shut up now."
"Hogwarts, we're back." Ben says, a couple people shout a Nah shit. Ben rolls his eyes and points to one guy, "shut up Osborn."
And with one strum of Harry's guitar they were off, a different tune, one that I think I heard in Harry's bedroom in The Burrow a couple times.
"Stop digging in your heart 'cause tonight is on me
Tonight is on me
Stop trying so hard
Is what you said to me
What you said to me
Get too high when I'm high
So we see eye to eye, oh, oh
Take the high with the low
And away and away we go"
Already people are dancing, and now there's a little more booz in some, they're grinding up against their date, or at least I hope it's their date.
Hermione is letting loose and swinging her hips against a flustered Ron, and me and Nessa as chanting the song since we know it due to hours upon hours of rehearsals over the last 24 hours.
"Living our lives
Dancing on empty wallets
Spend it all on you,
Spend it all on you,
Until we die
Dancing on empty wallets
Spend it all on you, spend it all on you"
A smile graces Harry's face as he strums his guitar, obviously thinking about something.
"We got the whole night,
Won't you live it with me
Live it with me
We got our whole lives, but living ain't cheap
Living ain't cheap
Get too high when I'm high
So we see eye to eye, oh, oh
Take the high with the low
And away and away we go
"Living our lives
Dancing on empty wallets
Spend it all on you,
Spend it all on you,
Until we die
Dancing on empty wallets
Spend it all on you, spend it all on you
Sugar-coated brain
The fluid ain't to blame
For the sugar coated pain
We're living our lives
Dancing on empty wallets
Spend it all on you,
Spend it all on you
I always believed in second chances
I always believed in you"
Harry winks at me and for a second my whole life stops, and then it's back, the loud music, the dancing the squeals and screams crossing over the room as the boys finish the last of one of the best songs I've heard in a while.
A couple songs later Harry whips out another original like it's easy to write songs like he does, how well the lyrics mesh together.
"She maxed her credit cards
And dont got a job
She pays for the petrol with the change in her car
It's not the end of the road
Yeah, we've all been there before and it goes
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
He's walking home 'cause
He can't pay for the bus
He needs a sickel but he ain't got enough
It's not the end of the world
Yeah, we've all been there before and it goes
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Hey everybody, we don't have to live that way
We can all get some, yeah, we can all get paid"
And that sort of thing when on for a good a hour before Ben basically kicked Harry off the stage saying that his turn to dance with someone.
But just as Ben thinks that he's needed, Neil levitates him from his drum kit and places him next to Nessa, swaying her slightly. Neil winks at him and waves his wand, swishing it at the drums probably just to prove the point that he could leave to.
Harry wanders over to me, a lazy grin on his face. "Care for a dance M'lady?" He asks, holding his hand out for me, grinning like a fool when I accept, clasping onto his hand as we pull onto the dance floor, Harrys hands leave a burning desire as he pulls me into him by the waist, letting my hands onto his shoulder and into his palm.
"Thankyou." He says, starting to move me around the room, commanding everything in this room to disappear as we sway.
"For what." I ask, moving my eyes from our feet to his green, beautiful eyes.
"For saving you last dance for me." He murmurs, taking a glancing look over my face before meeting my eyes.
"It's alright, had to have one dance with my date."
"I'm sorry about tonight Gin. I was a shitty date, spent most time away then actually with you." Harry says, guilt gracing his all to perfect face.
"Harry. This is and was the best night of my life. It was nice to see you enjoy yourself." With that Harry smiles, pulling me all to close as we grace across the room.
Is this boy trying to kill me? I feel every fibre of his being on me as we twirl around the room. His fingers move around my waist, and the tingles that have been pulsing through me all night come alive again, yearning for his touch.
"And I was worried that I would need toe-tap." I say, winking as Harry pulls me out and back in, twirling me in the process.
"What?" He laughs, pulling me back in.
"I saw you at the Yule Ball. Your dancing was shit."I say, giggling at the moment Cho got her toes killed off, that was such a good moment.
"I won't take offence to that," he chuckles again, squeezing my waist teasingly, "I just guess I've got a teacher."
"But- who." I ask, Harry nods to the couple behind us, and saving me from turning around awkwardly Harry dips me, making me look to Nessa as she spins with Ben. When Ben spins her she looks to me, Nessa winks and carries on dancing, the glint of her eyes not failing to make an appearance.
Harry pulls me back up and grins down at me, "she wanted to make sure, tonight was perfect. For everyone. So for me that meant dance lessons."
"That girl is something else." I murmur, grinning at the thought of Nessa shouting at Harry telling him not to prod her feet again otherwise she'll hex him.
"That's why she couldn't walk properly. I just thought she was shagging someone without telling me."
Harry shakes his head and bites his bottom lip to stop the smiling spreading, "no. I had repay her in piggybacks wherever she wanted." He rolls his eyes as if remembering something, "in fact at one time it was 3 o'clock in the morning, she demanded to be taken to the kitchens as she was on and needed some chocolate."
I laugh and shake my head, "of course she did."
"I wouldn't change it though. I wanted tonight to be good for you Ginny." Harry says, before swooping me into a dip one last time before the music ends.
Half an hour later, we're all heading back to the dorms. All of us was quiet for the first time in our lives, content with the world around us.
Nessa leans in and kisses me on the cheek and whispers about the Room of Requirement and Ben and not expecting her until the morning.
Harry leads me up to the stairs, finally letting go of my hand.
We stand there for a moment, letting Ron and Hermione say their goodbyes with a peck on the lips, "that was the most fun I've ever had." He says breathlessly, his eyes glistening all the more in the lamp light.
"Me too." I reply, adjusting Harry's suit jacket across my shoulders, my heels running cold against my leg.
"I'm... glad we went together." What an understatement, I thought as his eyes flicker to my shoulders, "oh." I say stupidly, following his gaze, I take the jacket off my shoulders, letting the cold night at Hogwarts brace my shoulders, "...here you go, thanks."
Harry shakes his head and takes it off me, pulling it over my shoulders and pulling hair from under it, "keep it. You seemed cold."
"Thankyou, again." I accept, eyes flickering to the ground before back to Harry after an moment.
"Thankyou for being my coat rack." He winks, biting his lip as he was about to say something else but deciding against it as he takes a hesitant step forward. "I owe you another thank you." He says quietly. "For being the best date I've ever had, and y'know shoving my arse onto the stage." He smiles shyly, rubbing the back of his neck. "And for being the best person I know. You were beautiful... more then beautiful, I've never seen anyone like you before Ginny Weasley. You owned that room and every room." He murmurs, "I'm lucky to have you as a person in my life."
He's lucky? I'm lucky to have him, I shake my head, smiling right back at him, "I'm the lucky one Potter, you were dazzling tonight, captured the whole of Hogwarts in one song, and I say we own everyone room. I mean possessed girl and The Chosen One we are quite the match aren't we?" I turn my head slightly to the left, smiling softly at the gorgeous man in front of me, "Goodnight Harry." I whisper, using his arm to lean up and kiss his cheek, leaving a beige lip mark before giggling and pulling away.
I turn around to see him watching my retreating figure up the stairs. He saluted me off and walks off to his staircase, and I notice a little spring in his step as he walks.
One more night, one more heartache and one more thing to love about Harry Potter.
