July 1993
Cassie woke up to knocking on the door. It was still way too early for anyone in their right minds to visit. Begrudgingly she got up and went to open the door, keeping the chain on and holding her wand tight. She wasn’t expecting anyone in particular to be on the other side, but it certainly wasn’t him.
“Please let me in. I got nowhere else to go.” His face was pale and there were dark bruises under his eyes making it evident he hasn’t had a good night sleep in what was probably 12 years. “You want me to beg. I’ll beg.”
She shut the door to remove the chain that stops it from opening all the way. A flash of relief passed through his face when she reopened the door. Walking farther into the house to allow him to enter.
“Why?” was all she said after the door closed behind him.
“It doesn’t matter.”
“You’ve had 12 years to escape. Why now?”
“No it doesn’t matter. None of it matters!”
“What?”
“It was him! It was him but I couldn’t see. Why would he- why would he do that? Why would he do any of that? I don’t understand!” His face was full of betrayal and hurt. Realization hit her. It had never made sense, why would Sirius betray James? He was more family to Sirius then she'd ever been “I mean I know now that it was him, but I don't feel it! I know but- but I don’t know.”
He had started to cry now and Cassie slowly made her way over. “He was our best friend. My best friend. Cas I’m so sorry.”
“You don’t have to apologize to me.”
“You’re the only one, who can help me.” he was looking at her like she would throw him out at any second now. She can’t blame him for that, they haven't been on good terms since they were 15 but standing here now the only thing she could think about is how much she missed him. “Please help me.”
“Sirius, it’s okay. Im here.” She touched his cheek and he leaned into her touch.
They had moved to the couch now just sitting together, “You know you could get in serious trouble for this right?”
“I know” They fell into a peaceful silence for a while until he spoke again.
“I’m not going back. I’m not going back ever. They’d have to kill me.” He still looked at her like she was bound to take it all back and rat him out.
“I’m not gonna make you go back. There is nothing you could do to make me change my mind.”
“Except that I’m crazy.”
“Sirius”
“I am. But you opened the front door to me anyway. Why would you do that to yourself?” He asked
“You’re my big brother Sirius. I’d do anything for you.” And it’s true, she would even after everything that has happened between them. He’s still her brother, and the only person she has left. They both started crying again at some point, and she leaned in to hug him.
“I’m sorry. For everything, for leaving you.”
“You don’t have to apologize for that . I got over it a long time ago, we were all scared kids. You were just the only one brave enough to run.” it seems stupid now, that they had fallen out over him getting away. “I just wish you would have taken us with you.”
His grip tightened on her shirt. “I missed you so much.” Her sobs were muffled in his robes. “And I miss him” Regulus. It was just them now, the trio was down to two.
“Me too.”
