The Struggle of Pining
Summary
You have been in love with Sirius Black since the first time you met him. This would be fine except it was not mutual. Sirius is one of the most sought-after boys in your year, every girl fancied him, and why would he ever choose you?  Basically, a cliche not so one-sided pining friends to lovers!!!
Note
I recently re-read POA and forgot how much I love Sirius Black so here you go!

“Earth to Y/N! Hello!”. You were pulled out of your daydream by the voice of your best friend, Lily Evans. You had been deep in thought as you played around with the breakfast on your plate when talking to Lily. You tried to pretend you were listening but obviously you weren’t convincing.

“Sorry, I uh must have zoned out.” You said to Lily quickly, who responded with her shaking her head back and forth. Lily had grown accustomed to you zoning out lately, but didn’t mean she liked being ignored.

“Y/N, I know you are going to lie to me but are you okay?” Lily asked sweetly. You didn’t deserve her, even when being ignored she still chose kindness and just wanted to help her friend. But you couldn’t tell her what was wrong, it would make everything so much worse.

You were in love with Sirius Black. You had been since your third year, and still are well into your sixth year. You knew of him as you guys are in the same house, and mostly every girl at one point has fancied him, but in the third year James Potter had taken a fancy to Lily and began talking to her everyday, eventually forming a friendship with her group of friends and his. When James brought his group over to Lily and her friends (You, Piper, and Violet), you met eyes with the most attractive boy you had ever seen. Sirius Black. You guys didn’t even speak to each other before James had to leave for quidditch practice, but you were already enthralled.

Ever since that day James brought his friends along more often and there became a group of 8 as the friends group collided. You will forever curse that day for bringing you the man you will forever be in love with, but also adore it as you found your friends that you now consider family. Thankfully, no one was aware of your adoration for Sirius, for fear of it breaking up your friend group, and embarrassment as you were certain he would never feel the same.

“Lily, I promise you nothing is bothering me, I am just tired from staying up late trying to finish McGonagall’s essay.” You smile to Lily, who still doesn’t look convinced but decided she wouldn’t get the straight answer out of you anyway.

You continue a conversation about your classes and whether you guys understood the material, but you and Lily always did as you were always the most studious in your friend, besides Remus of course who was always reading. You and Lily realized the time and made your way to your first class of the day, potions, which happened to be on of our favorites- and not because of the subject.

You and Lily walk into class and find your way to your seats, which happen to be on opposite sides of the room. You and Lily first sat next to each other and the beginning of term but as Sirius and James always caused interruptions together, she separated them, not knowing she was putting them next to friends, You and Lily, but you would never help to cause interruptions in class so nothing happened.

You sit next to Sirius and you can already smell his woody scent of pine. He always smelt like fresh wood and you loved how Earthy he smelt, but you did not love how it made your heart beat out of your chest. You quickly shot a smile at Sirius when he returned with his dashing grin. Your stomach always did flips when he smiled at you. You tried to not focus on how close you were to Sirius and instead focus on the professor.

You were writing down the steps of the potion you were about to make when you felt Sirius’s hands in your hair pushing it behind your ear. Your spine immediately stilled as you felt your face bloom with heat, you look at Sirius questionably when he returns with another of his mischievous smirks.

“How can you even see your paper with your hair in the way?” Sirius whispers in your ear as he leans in. Your body shivers at the close proximity of him as you feel his breath along your neck. You were about to say something back to Sirius when you the professor tells the class to gather the materials for the potion, causing Sirius to walk away.

You try to take deep breaths and to fan your face, hoping Sirius can’t see how red your face is. You would die if he even knew of your feelings for him, there was no way he would ever return them. As you look at him walking through the classroom gathering ingredients, you spot at least four other girls following him with their eyes as well. It was no secret Sirius was a so called ‘player’ and gathered the attention of almost every girl, which just proved further to you that Sirius would never see you that way if he could have any girl he wanted.

Sirius comes back to your shared desk and places down all your required ingredients. You are the only one with your textbook, Sirius often forgetting his own, causing Sirius to peer over your shoulder as he chose not to sit down, his arm on the desk as he cages around you. This causes Sirius’s scent to engulf you, making you lose your focus as your eyes roam the pages. You snap out of it and quickly begin making the potion and bark orders at Sirius to listen.

“Y/N please I can’t take any more of this hard work, pretty boys aren’t meant to do this work!” Sirius whines to you as he wipes a nonexistent sweat streak from his forehead. You laugh at his words and beckon him to move as you take over the making of the potion so he can read the steps from the textbook.

“You are not pretty enough to be complaining but whatever will get you to shut up…” You say in a joking tone as you begin the next step of the potion. Sirius mocks an offensive face as you giggle at his antics. This how the two of you always were, joking back and forth, and helped to remind you that although you guys weren’t more, you were still ecstatic to be his friend.
As you increased the temperature on the cauldron small flames began to bubble at the top of the potion, you quickly try to hide your hair but your hands were covered in a goo making you unable to touch your hair. Sirius, noticing your struggle, moved the help you.

“Don’t worry, I always keep one of these around in case you need it.” Sirius says as you feel him drag all your hair to the top of your head before wrapping it in a neat bun. You can’t help the goosebumps to feel his calloused fingers on your hair and skin, and at the idea he carried hair ties around just for you. You quickly say thank you to him before turning back to the potion.

When class is almost over the professor examines all the cauldrons before coming back to your and Sirius’s desk and exclaims how your potion was the best of the class. You and Sirius turn to each other as the rest of the class gives annoyed claps. Sirius grabs your hand and before you can move, drags your hand in the air and then down as he bends you both forward, pretending as if you guys were bowing. The rest of the class erupts into laughter and the claps become more energetic. You spot some of the girls from before scowling at you with jealousy. You felt happy knowing some girls envied you, even if it wasn’t real.

As the claps died down you try to pull your hand away when Sirius holds on with a smile at you, before grabbing both of your bags and bringing you outside the class room to meet with James and Lily. Sirius does another little bow before the two and moves his arm behind your shoulder as the four of you walk down the corridor to your next classes.

“I reckon Y/N should be my partner in every class, that was the first time a teacher has ever said I have done the best!” Sirius laughs as the four of you walk together. Sirius was always the student who would rather make the class laugh instead of trying for a good grade.

“Sorry Pads, she’s my partner, you can keep James he is helpless.” Lily says as he pushes Sirius’s arm off of you to replace with her own. James looks heartbroken as his girlfriend just called him helpless.

“Lily you are a monster, its okay James I still love you.” Sirius says before making kissy faces as James who almost falls trying to dodge his attempts. You and Lily laugh at the two boys. You guys walk ahead not wanting to be late for our next class, when James and Sirius eventually catch up right before your next classroom, divination. Sirius and James opted to take transfiguration instead so you don’t have this class with them.

James and Lily give each other a parting kiss, leaving you and Sirius to stare in disgust at their PDA.

“Well, that is disgusting, anyways, would you guys want to hang out later, we got a new card game from Zonko’s we want to try out.” Sirius says to you. You say yes happily and turn to go in the classroom when you see Lily and James are still kissing and you have to physically drag her away to get her to leave James’ side.

Divination passed by quickly, as most of the time you spent thinking of the way Sirius’s hands felt going through your hair. You and Lily go to grab dinner and surprised to see the boys weren’t there. You remember there was quidditch practice today so James and Sirius wouldn’t be in the Great Hall but everyone else would be so you guys walked to sit with the rest of the group.

You planted yourself next to Remus who was, of course, reading. You weren’t even going to try and speak to him as it was impossible to distract him from a good book, so you turned to face Lily and Piper who were talking about an assignment in Herbology. Peter was next to Piper but he wasn’t talking as he seemed to be completing a last minute assignment. You found comfort in listening to your friends when you heard Violet call to you guys and sit next to Remus on his other side.

You smiled as you realized Remus had now put down his book to give his undivided attention to Violet. There had been many times you had to say his name three times before he put down his book, so his feelings for your friend were painfully obvious. Luckily for him to feelings were mutual, and you, Lily, and Piper, all gave each other knowing looks as you looked at Violet and Remus talk to each other with bright red faces.

By the time all of your were done eating you guys ran into Sirius and James who looked sweaty from their practice. Sirius always looked so good after practice, he has dirt smudged on his face and his sweaty hair made him look even more handsome than normal. The boys tell you their going to quickly eat dinner but they should hang out after to play the game, you guys bid your farewell as you walk to your hangout.

Ever since the group formed you guys found the astronomy tower to be a perfect venue to fit your large friend group. You guys would all meet here almost every night and hang out deep into the night talking about meaningless things. It was always the highlight of your day as it often lead you and Sirius talking alone as every one went back to bed before the two of you.
The group had been in the tower for twenty minutes when Sirius and James came back, full of food and showered. Sirius planted himself behind you on the coach you guys brought there as you sat on the floor next to Violet and Piper. Across from you Lily and James were now almost sitting on top of each other. Remus was sitting on the other side of Violet, and Peter was on the other side of Piper still doing that assignment. Sirius moved around you to place a deck of cards and bottle of firewhiskey in the center of the room.

“Okay lets begin.”
