First Impressions Vi POV
Let's set the scene, because a friend of mine told me it's necessary to clarify where the story is happening. You know "Lukes Diner"? From Gilmore Girls? Ok, good, like that, but bigger.
Our protagonist is sitting at a table close to the entrance. Violet is pouting, trying to watch discreetly a woman in the table next to hers.
—Are you for real? Again? —asks Jinx.
—What? —answered Vi, confused, turning to see Jinx.
—Am I going to have to see you here every day? —says Jinx, mockingly.
—I come here every day! —Vi says, surprised and confused.
—Yes, but it's not always at the same time. —answered Jinx, watching her sister and letting out a smile. —You do know she doesn't come here on weekends, right?
—Who? —says Vi.
—Who are you watching? —Jinx says, smiling deeply and with mischief in her voice.
—No one! I'm just trying to relax and drinking my coffee —says Vi, pretending to be nonchalant.
—Sis, that stuff you buy doesn't qualify as coffee —Jinx says pointing at Vi's frappé —and it's obvious I'm talking about the 1.90 m, blue haired, special forces commando from a Netflix movie lady sitting behind me —Jinx finishes, nodding at the table behind her.
—I don't know who you're talking about —Vi answers, eyes on her frappé, avoiding her nosy sister.
—Of course, no, it's me seeing things —Jinx says, sarcastically —sorry, my imagination gets the better of me sometimes, you know, the voices in my head.
—I really don't know what you're talking about —Vi says, shrugging her shoulders.
—Ok, you don't know, I believe you. —Jinx says —I'll be over there, making fun of you —Jinx finishes, pointing to the bar with her head
Vi does a military-style salute with her hand on her forehead to say goodbye to Jinx and turns to look out the window next to her table. Avoiding seeing the 1.90 m. lady. She rubs her face, frustrated and starts talking to herself, in a low voice.
—You're soooo subtle, bravo, now Jinx won't leave you alone. —she continues in a normal tone —uuuuugh stupid.
—Stupid? Are you talking to me? —says a voice to Vi's left.
Vi turns to where the voice came from and sees the woman Jinx and her were talking about.
—Of course —Vi says, with resignation. Grunting.
—Of course? —the woman asks, annoyed —I don't know what your problem is but I don't understand why would insult me like that when I only wanted to give you the jacket you had lying there —she continues, throwing Vi's jacket on the table.
—Cupcake, I have no idea what you're talking about —Vi says, turning to look at the woman —I didn't say anything to you, I was talking to myself, calmly, until a crazy mongoose —Vi says, looking her from head to toe —came to bother me.
—Crazy mongoose? Cupcake?! —the woman says, in a very high-pitched voice —I'm not a cupcake, my name is Caitlyn, and I just wanted to do a good deed, but it's obvious that some people don't deserve it —Caitlyn says, looking her from head to toe as well.
The woman gives Vi a hateful look, whom she hadn't seen since the last time she had to visit the prison and reported a guard, then turns and leaves the premises.
Vi turns to look at her sister, because it's obvious that Jinx saw everything, and there she is, looking at Vi with a mix of concern, exasperation and trying to hold back her laughter.
—Couldn't be ruder? —Jinx asks.
—What? Rude? I wasn't rude! —Vi argues. —I still don't understand what just happened and I almost dropped my frappe. —Vi says, pointing to where the woman let her jacket, right next to her glass.
Jinx turns to see if everything is under control behind the bar and returns to Vi's table, sitting in front of her.
—God, you're so dense. —Jinx says. —I knew that so many blows to the head would be bad for you.
—Hey! Now what did I do? —Vi asks, with an indignant voice.
—You could've been nice to the pretty, clearly foreign stranger, just the way you like them btw, that you've been staring at for 4 days straight, but nooooo, you had to be abrupt and insult her instead of asking politely what she meant, you know? like a normal human being —Jinx says, in a mocking voice.
—It hasn't been 4 days! —Vi answers while doing the math in her head —I've only seen her here 3 days.
—Hahahahahahahahahahahaha of everything I just told you, that is what you heard? —Jinx asks, laughing.
—Obviously not —Vi says, rolling her eyes —but how did you expect me to treat her when she came in and got all combative and on my face? —Vi says, crossing her arms, frowning and pouting. —You know I don't tolerate that behavior from anyone, least of all her people.
—Her people? Behavior? Vi, the woman just picked up your jacket, she heard you saying stupid and you confused her —Jinx says, in a calm voice, looking into Vi's eyes —you were the one who reacted particularly badly, instead of trying to clear up the misunderstanding, you escalated the situation, use your words Sis —Jinx says. —You haven't been to the gym yet, right?
—Don't talk to me like that, I don't need gentle parenting —Vi says, scolding Jinx and pointing with her finger —and no, not yet, I came here first for my sugar fix. —Vi rubs her temples and says —Ugh, can I have my check? please.
—I left it for you a while ago, when I stopped by to talk about your crush —Jinx says, getting up and pointing at the note that's sticking out a little from under Vi's jacket.
—Thanks. —Vi says, getting up and leaving the amount of her consumption, but no tip. She looks at Jinx and says —there's no tip for you.
—You never leave a tip —Jinx answers, laughing and taking the money from the table —I'm surprised you paid, you were getting really comfortable at being a parasite.
Vi gives her an angry look, puts on her jacket, walks to the door, and before leaving she manages to hear.
—See you tomorrow, Sis! Same time, I'll try to save you a table next to her. —Jinx says smiling.
Vi gives her the middle finger and slams the door on her way out.
—Obviously she had to be combative, was it too much to ask for my brain to react like a normal person? —Vi says, grumbling under her breath.
A car gives way to her, so she runs across the street and waves at it. Growing up in the area makes her highly recognizable, more so for her teenage adventures, now that she's an adult she likes to stay on good terms with the community.
When she turns to the street where the entrance to her gym is, she realizes that her day is not going to get any better, because the unhinged mongoose has just entered the door of the same place Vi heading to.
—Of course she is. —Vi says, with resignation, closing her eyes and exhaling.
Vi stands in the corner, hands in the pockets of her jacket, kicking non-existent things with her boots, annoyed, contemplating her options.
—I can skip it, it's not like I can't go at another time —she tells herself. —On the other hand, this is my training schedule, mine, I'm not going to change it just because some woman I just met walked in. —Vi says, resolutely, but without taking a step in that direction.
