Chapter 10
Riley the Prick
AN: Mentions of sexual harassment.
Jensen Ackles as Alaric Saltzman
It was the Friday of the football game, and it seemed like the whole town was in attendance. Leilani gave a great introductory speech for the team using a megaphone, “Good evening everyone. Welcome to the first game of the season. Tonight’s game is our very own Timberwolves!!” The crowd cheers and applauds loudly as the Mystic Falls’ football team runs onto the field. “Versus the Lions!!” The crowd BOOs the opposing team as they too run onto the field. “Alright, alright, settle down. Let us not forget the Lady Timberwolves!” The cheer squad waves their pom-poms at the crowd. Leilani hands the megaphone over to the official referee so he could start the game.
The first quarter was a little rough with the Timberwolves playing with the old mindset of last season. Before the second quarter, Lei had called a time-out. She huddled with the team and did her best to hype them up, as well as reassure them that it didn’t matter if they won or not. Leilani wanted the team to do their best and have fun. When the second quarter started, the Timberwolves did a lot better. And the scoreboard proved that with the Timberwolves in the lead, 17 to 10.
Before the buzzer at halftime, a drunk Riley Chambers approached Leilani on the sidelines. She could smell him from a few feet away. Lei huffed in annoyance the closer he got to her. “Well, aren’t you a sight for sore eyes,” Riley slurred. Lei did not want to deal with him at the moment, “Can’t you see I’m busy?” Riley had the nerve to laugh in her face, his breath stinking up her personal space, “Yeah, right. You’re just a pretty face holding a clipboard.” He stepped even closer to Lei, “Why don’t you set it down and come with me to the locker room? I want to hear you scream my name with that lovely accent of yours.” Lei shied away from him in disgust, “Riley, I am not now nor will I ever be interested in a pig like you.”
Leilani moved closer to the players on the bench and out of his reach. The team could tell their coach was uncomfortable, so Matt came up to her with the playbook. “Coach? This next play doesn’t seem like it will work,” Matt said to Lei but his eyes were on Mister Chambers. The drunk English teacher got upset at being ignored and moved to stand near the hallway leading to the locker rooms. He was going to approach Lei again when she was away from the team. Neither the team, Riley, nor Leilani noticed a certain Raven-haired, Blue-eyed vampire observing the whole situation. Damon’s humanity was off and he wanted to prove that to Stefan, and now he has a perfect opportunity to do so. Too bad the game was going so well.
When the buzzer sounded for the start of halftime, the teams left the field. The Timberwolves made their way to the locker room to recoup from the first half and run through the plays for the second half. On the way to the locker room, the players passed Mister Chambers, who clearly has become even more intoxicated everyone can see that he is using the wall to stay upright. The players all gave the teacher dirty looks because he was openly drinking from a bottle of Jack Daniels.
Leilani was following the team when she was grabbed by the drunk. His hand gripped her upper arm tight enough to leave a bruise. She tried to get his hand off her, but he only tightened his grip, “Let go of me.” “Now, now, stop struggling. I told you it was only a matter of time,” Riley had a look on his face that made Lei shiver in disgust. She was about to reach for her wand when someone got their attention, “Yo, Coach! You coming or what?” Lei looked past Riley and saw Stefan and Matt waiting down the hall near the locker room doors.
“Ugh, why do I always get interrupted?” Riley let go of Lei and threw his arms in the air in frustration. Quickly side-stepping around the drunk, Lei headed towards the clearly angry players. Even in the darkness of the hall, Lei could see their anger and disgust-filled expressions. Nothing else was said as Matt and Lei entered the locker room. Stefan stayed in the hall looking at Mister Chambers, as well as scanning the rest of the hall.
Stefan thought he was imagining things when he thought he saw his brother creeping through the dark in the hall. “Hey, little brother, congrats on the first half. That history teacher of yours is a surprisingly good coach,” Damon stepped out of the darkened hall and moved closer to his brother and the drunk teacher. Stefan saw something in his brother’s eyes. He could see Damon still has his humanity off and wonders what he was planning. It was only when Damon got closer to Mister Chambers that Stefan figured it out. But before Stefan could say or do anything Damon viciously tore out Riley Chamber’s throat with his teeth.
As Riley Chambers’ body fell to the ground, twitching, his blood puddling underneath him, and spreading across the hall, Damon smiled. It was a cruel smile, blood dripping down the front of Damon’s expensive t-shirt, “I was really looking forward to the second half.” Stefan looked at the body of the drunk teacher trying to control his bloodlust, then looked up to say something to Damon but he was already gone.
The door to the locker room opened and Matt stepped back out, “Stefan? Hey, Stefan? You okay dude?” Matt didn’t get an answer so he moved to stand next to a frozen Stefan. Matt didn’t notice the change in Stefan’s face because he saw the bloody body, “Shit!” Hearing Matt cursing, Stefan snapped out of it, took a few deep breaths, and calmed his bloodlust. He could hear Matt run back into the locker room to grab his phone and call the sheriff. Stefan had left the scene, not wanting to be near the blood of the teacher his brother just killed.
On the other side of the field occurring at the same time, Tyler left the field and headed toward Vicky Donovan. She was standing by herself near the fence by the parking lot looking at Jeremy. Tyler saw who she was looking at and veered towards Jeremy. Tyler taunted Jeremy, “You know, Vicky is only using you for drugs?” Tyler was almost nose-to-nose with Jeremy, “She slept with you because you’re one of her dealers.” Jeremy didn’t say anything, he just clenched his fist and swung.
The two teens exchanged blows until Tyler got the upper hand and had to be pulled off Jeremy by a couple of Jeremy's stoner friends. Elena and Caroline heard the crowd cheering on the two and ran over to see what was going on. Elena, Caroline, and Vicky were yelling at Tyler to stop before he was pulled off by the stoners.
Jeremy stood up, wiped his bloody broken nose with his shirt, picked up the broken bottle by the neck, and was going to slash Tyler with it. At the last moment, Stefan showed up and stood between Jeremy and Tyler getting his hand sliced in the process. Stefan quickly hid his injured hand before it could be seen but it was too late, Elena had seen. “Oh my god! Are you okay? Let me see your hand,” Elena grabbed his arm to pull him closer to inspect his hand. “I’m fine, Elena. He missed. See?” Stefan was thankful his hand healed quickly. He showed the girl he was seeing an uninjured hand. Elena’s face scrunched in confusion, “I could have sworn Jeremy cut you.” Any explanation Stefan had was cut off by the sound of approaching sirens.
By now, several students, staff, both teams, and most of the cheer squad are watching law enforcement rope off the area and examine the scene. Caroline had joined Bonnie, who was in shock from the revelation that she had somehow “seen” their English teacher’s death. Bonnie had felt off, like something bad was going to happen all throughout the day, and she kept seeing three numbers over and over again, 8, 14, and 22. She scanned the area where the dead teacher was found and saw those three numbers. The number 8 was painted on the wall in the hallway, 14 was the locker number his head was pointed towards, and 22 was the number of the staff parking spot on the other side of the hallway near the body’s feet.
(I know it’s not that way in the show. In this story, Bonnie did know about magic early on, she just didn’t want to believe she was a witch.)
Leilani felt overwhelmed tonight. Walking out of the locker room and seeing Riley Chambers being covered by a white sheet by the medical examiner when she had just seen the guy. She stared at the spot where his body lay for so long she got lost in her thoughts, in her memories. Flashes from the Wizarding War and the bodies laying throughout the Great Hall went through her mind. She didn’t feel the tears flowing, or hear everything going on around her.
A hand on her shoulder jolted her from her thoughts. Lei turned to see who it was. “Are you okay?” Stefan asked. Elena, Caroline, and Bonnie were standing not that far away. Lei wiped away the tears, “Just got lost in my head.” Stefan could tell Lei wasn’t going to say any more about it and nodded his head. It was announced by the principal and sheriff that the rest of the game was canceled. Everyone was ushered off the school grounds so the sheriff could continue the investigation and clean up. The school was canceled for the following week.
Later that night Damon strutted into the Salvatore boarding house like he did nothing wrong. Stefan is almost on his last nerve with his brother, “You have any idea what you’ve done?” Damon scoffs, “I killed a creep and I don’t feel bad about it. Why does it matter?” Stefan pinches the bridge of his nose in frustration, “I was there for the aftermath Damon. You didn’t see what I saw. You can’t keep killing people, it’s going to expose us.” Stefan wanted to tell his brother about Bonnie’s and Leilani’s reactions but knows Damon won’t care with his humanity off.
Stefan goes to bed thankful his nephew Zach has been out of town since the day after he arrived, but he will be returning soon and that may pose a problem for them. With Damon’s humanity off, he may kill their last living blood relative just because he feels like it. He’ll have to warn Zach the moment he comes home. And hopefully, Damon will stop killing people, but Stefan doubts it.
During that week, Leilani was called into the sheriff’s office to be questioned by the sheriff. Lei told Sheriff Forbes what happened with Riley Chambers while making sure the sheriff knew Riley was alive when she entered the locker room. Then Lei was called into the school to speak with the principal. He was informing her that she has been replaced. She was to vacate her desk by the end of the day on Thursday. Leilani just shook her head, “Why do I feel this has nothing to do with my history class?” She met the new guy as she was packing up the things she kept in the desk drawers.
Garth Winslow was your stereotypical jock, only went to college to play football. The principal had given him the syllabus written by Tanner to make teaching the class simple. Lei thought he was a little too smug when she met him. She also met Riley Chambers' replacement. Alaric Saltzman. He seemed like a nice guy. A little paranoid but then again he did move to a town filled with supernatural beings.
So, on the following Monday when school started again, the students were disappointed that Miss Evans was fired. The football players especially. They felt they would have won their first game if it wasn’t shut down before the second half. They were even more bummed when the new teacher used Tanner’s syllabus and not Leilani’s. But they had to admit he was an okay coach. The situation wasn’t all bad.
Leilani now had the free time to work on the map, as well as Sirius’ portrait. The group with the sketchbooks had noticed it was filling in pretty quickly. It turns out both Lei and Damon were working on the sketches. Damon did more than the rest. Which made Stefan suspicious, especially the sketch of the Fell Church ruins. It was very detailed.
That clued Stefan in, “You’re not here just to make my life a living hell, you’re here to get Katherine out of the tomb!” Stefan confronted his brother at their home. “Hey, the witch wants detailed sketches so that’s what I’m doing,” The smirk never left Damon’s face as he poured himself another two fingers of Bourbon.
Stefan shook his head in disappointment, “You know there’s a big possibility she’s not in there?” Stefan barely got the question out before Damon had him against the wall with his hands around Stefan’s throat, “She’s in there. She has to be. Why else has she not come looking for me?” The look of doubt on Stefan’s face matched the lingering doubt in Damon’s mind. He squeezed a little harder before letting go and dropping Stefan. “As soon as I have Katherine I’m gone,” Damon grabbed his leather jacket and left for the Mystic Grill. He needed a drink somewhere away from his brother and the reminder that Stefan may be right.
“Hans! You give those back!” Fenrir was chasing the only Niffler in Hermione’s Sanctuary. Leilani had named him after the thief and the main villain in the movie Die Hard, Hans Gruber. Currently, Fenrir was chasing the little bugger all throughout the kitchen. The Niffler had gotten into the cutlery drawer and taken all the cutlery. He couldn’t help it, it was shiny. Hermione was in the hallway watching the whole ordeal and trying not to laugh. She took pity on her husband, pulled her wand from her bun, and immobilized Hans. Fenrir was able to pick him up and shake everything out of his pouch onto the kitchen island. Both adults shook their heads when more than cutlery fell out.
Leilani walks into the kitchen to grab an apple. Taking a bite, she looked around and saw a pile of shiny things, and sighed, “Hans.” Lei could see the small, bluish-black creature squirming to get loose from Fenrir. “I’m going to the Grill for a bit. Do you guys want to come with me?” Lei asked. Both Hermione and Fenrir shook their heads. Hermione started going through the pile to sort it out and put everything away. Fenrir relaxed his hold of Hans and the Niffler took off. He figures he’ll find him after helping his wife. Nobody noticed Hans hide inside Leilani’s satchel.
Damon turned around when the bell above the door rang signaling that someone new had entered the Grill and gave himself a half-smile before it turned into a smirk at the sight of Miss Leilani Evans. He took a sip of his drink while watching her sit down at the bar and order some fries. Damon swung his legs to face Lei, “Hello, Miss Evans.”
Leilani laughed a little, “Just Evans or Leilani. I’m no longer teaching.” Lei drizzled ketchup over her fries. Damon furrowed his eyebrows, “What happened?” Lei sighed, “Apparently, women can’t coach football.” She shrugged her shoulders then picked up a fry and took a bite. Before Damon could say anything, the bartender asked him if he wanted a refill. Nodding his head, Damon turned his attention back to Lei, “What are you going to do now?” He was curious to see if she would help him retrieve something from the Lockwoods’ home.
“I’m going to work on the map and catch up on some things around my home,” Lei bit into another fry. Hans took the opportunity to sneak out of Lei’s satchel and grab anything shiny close to him before climbing back into the satchel without being noticed. Hans loves anything shiny, which will, unfortunately, get him and Lei into trouble later on.
Lei had finished eating her fries in peace before paying and then walking back home to work on Sirius’ portrait. Damon sat a barstool over having a few more drinks before deciding to mess with the locals. He left some money on the bar, went out the door and vamp sped to the woods. Damon felt like going after some campers but found some stoned teenagers instead. He noticed Elena’s little brother was with them but he had to leave. Once Jeremy was out of sight, Damon attacked. He drained those two and left their bodies where they dropped then sped home.
Rolling his eyes at Stefan and Zach, Damon went up to his room to shower. He subtly listened to Stefan and Zach talk about where Zach was. Their nephew had left town to visit an old friend but didn’t disclose any details so Damon stopped listening. Once out of the shower, he went to torment Stefan some more. Making Stefan’s existence miserable is something that makes Damon smile. He noticed Zach was nowhere to be found so he shrugged his shoulders and went to pour himself a drink while taunting Stefan.
Leilani walked into the door of her home, “Alright, Hans. Come out of there.” She had felt the little guy snooping through her satchel on the way home. Lei wanted to be mad at him but he’s too cute. She’ll still scold him though. Hans slowly peeked his head out of the satchel and gave Lei “pouty eyes”. “Ugh, don’t look at me like that. You know I’ll cave,” Lei tried to keep a stern face but soon it fell. “Fine. Just don’t steal anything in public. This town is mostly Muggles,” Lei lifted Hans out of her satchel and took him back to his nest that was full of shinies inside the Sanctuary near Buckbeak’s spot. Hans burrowed into one of the piles in his nest and went to sleep. She spent a little time checking on the other creatures before working on the map. She could see it was almost done being sketched.
Time Skip (Skipping the Founder’s Party, Sexy Stud Carwash, and Halloween Dance)
So many things have happened over the past few weeks. The Founder’s party went well for the most part. Leilani, Fenrir, and Hermione were not invited because they haven’t been citizens of the town long enough according to the Mayor. There was a small incident where a high school student was attacked by Damon after Elena and Caroline saw she was covered in bruises and bite marks. Stefan had spiked the girl’s drink with Vervain that Zach was growing in the cellar. When Damon bit the girl, he became weak and Stefan was able to lock him away.
Damon had also taken a crystal from inside the Lockwood home that he hid there years ago but dropped it when he bit the girl. She didn’t notice it but Caroline did when she found her. Caroline put it in her purse for safekeeping. She later showed it to Bonnie and explained where she found it. They were sitting in the Grill at a booth, Damon was sitting at the bar listening to the patrons when he caught their conversation talking about the crystal he dropped a week or so ago. He quietly stole it back from Caroline a few days later.
The full moon came and went without any issues. Greyback was able to shift on the property and run freely through the wilderness inside the warded area. Leilani ran with him to keep him company. She remembered Sirius/Padfoot talking about running with Moony in his animagus form and felt Greyback would appreciate the gesture. The next morning, Greyback sat at the kitchen table sore, battered, and a little bruised but happy he didn’t hurt anyone. Winky had made a fantastic English Breakfast for Fenrir and then ushered him to bed with the threat of her wooden spoon.
Sirius Black’s portrait was near completion but Leilani kept getting distracted by the supernatural happenings of this small, seemingly peaceful town. Lei had recently found out Vicky Donovan was staked by Stefan after trying to attack Jeremy.
Damon had escaped the cellar with the help of the girl he was using and killed his nephew Zach. Then Bonnie was possessed by her ancestor Emily so she could destroy the crystal she somehow acquired from Damon. Then Damon was searching for other ways to open a tomb that contained the vampire that turned him and his brother, as well as several other vampires since the crystal was destroyed.
Leilani, Hermione, and Fenrir sighed in frustration. They thought this dimension would be peaceful, but it has its own drama. The three wizarding folk told the Scooby Gang they will help unless it puts them in danger. Them, meaning Hermione. Fenrir and Lei had noticed Hermione has been feeling sick these past few days, and her magic is acting up. Plus Fenrir instinctively won’t leave her side, even going as far as standing guard outside the bathroom when Hermione has to go. A few things come to mind but they want to be sure before jumping to conclusions.
After another bout of nausea, Hermione rinsed her mouth, brushed her teeth, washed her hands, then collided with a hard chest once she opened the door. Her husband looked on with concern, hugging her close to him. Fenrir leaned down to snuggle against the crook of her neck, inhaling her scent. He pulled back a little but kept Hermione in his arms, “Your scent is different.” “Different how?” Hermione asked, she was curious and worried. Fenrir smelled the top of her head and closed his eyes, “It’s heavier of my scent than usual.”
Hermione the ever logical one finally clicked the pieces(symptoms) into place. She stepped away from Fenrir and into their shared bedroom, all the while pulling her wand from her bun. Hermione took a shaky, deep breath, pointed her wand at her abdomen, and cast, “Graviditas deprehendere.” (“Detect Pregnancy,” Courtesy of Google Translate, couldn’t find the charm to detect pregnancy.) Both Fenrir and Hermione watched as two balls of light floated from her lower abdomen, one blue, and one pink.
The two of them stood in the middle of their bedroom with their jaws on the floor in silence. Until it was broken by Fenrir, “Wooh! I’m gonna be a father!” He picked up his wife and spun her around before setting her down, kneeling and hugging her around her midsection before sniffing her soon-to-be protruding belly. Hermione’s quiet voice sounded broken, “I’m pregnant.”
Leilani was told by Fenrir after he laid his overwhelmed wife down to take a rest. The two of them came to an agreement to not let Hermione do anything strenuous throughout her pregnancy. Especially after what Fenrir learned from Lei. “She probably feels overwhelmed because she was told by the healers at St Mungo’s. They had told her the damage from the severity of Dolohov’s curse during the Battle of DOM, and how long she suffered the Cruciatus at Bellatrix’s hand, she was barren. So…This pregnancy is a miracle.”
Fenrir added, “It’s twins. A boy and a girl.” “Good Godric. I’ll hit the library, see what books she was reading and bring them up to your room, so she doesn’t have to get out of bed so soon. And one of us should always be with her out in public.” Lei stood up to head into the library but stopped before walking out, “I’ll inform Winky and Pip. You know they will be excited for the little ones.” Lei detoured to the kitchen and told the house-elves. To say they were excited was an understatement. Winky prepared a light dinner for Hermione while Pip cleaned the bedroom next to the couple. It’s going to be a hectic few months.
AN: Next chapter the map will be done, the tomb will be opened, and Sheila will finally meet Leilani. Debating on saving Mason or not?
