Healer
*October 1950*
Minnie still got top marks. She decided she didn’t like Poppy. Effie was against this, however Minnie didn’t mind. Effie didn’t understand that Minnie wanted- no, needed to get better marks than Poppy. It was almost compulsive, it really was. Minerva wasn’t going to let Poppy or Eileen or any other student get higher marks then her. Of course she couldn’t control what they did and how well or often they studied, so she would just have to study well and often to ensure her hopes. She shared Potions with Poppy, and Astronomy with both Poppy and Eileen. However all her other classes were hers. Competition was still all she though about still and she was going to just be friends with Poppy or Eileen although she had nothing against them other than their smarts.
As far that Minnie knew she was top in her classes that she didn’t share with Poppy and was about the same in Astronomy with Eileen. But she never could figure out where Poppy was. She knows she’s smart and whenever there are awards given she’s almost always winning or up there but she never shares what exact marks she’s given on exams.
This is exactly what Minnie was trying to decipher when she walked into her dorm.
“Minerva. this is an intervention.” Euphemia said, sitting on her trunk that sat on the end of her bed. She had her arms crossed and while she wasn’t exactly angry she was stern and possibly a little sad, Minnie could tell from her face. The room was empty except for her and Minnie. Minerva pointed that out with her eyes.
“Well, maybe not exactly an intervention per say, but we do need to talk.” Minerva wasn’t always good with words. so she just crossed the room and sat on her bed ready to listen. Minnie loves Effie, she truly does; yet sometimes she can be quite emotional or maybe Minnie has diminished one’s and should talk to somebody about that. She’s not quite sure but also keeps putting it off.
“Minnie. I haven’t seen you do anything other than study for the past three weeks. You hardly shower or eat and I can tell all you think about is how you can be better. I’m worried and you shouldn’t have to worry about that you’re doing quite lovely and you are so bright you haven’t anything to worry about.” Effie started to chuckle. “I mean even if you stopped trying now you would be top of the class and would get an immediate internship at St. Mungos.” Effie smiled slightly, waiting for a response. Yes, maybe Minnie had put a bit of taking care of herself to the side but was Effie inferring she should become a healer? No, she was not going to become a healer. Really her dream job was an Auror and she would need better than she has for that. Any man could be an Auror if they even so much as slightly wanted to, but Minnie, a woman would need to work for it.
“I don’t want to be a healer, Effie. While they do amazing work I can’t do that. You know I can’t. I want to be an Auror and I have to work for it.” Minnie started to feel angry. How dare Effie just assume she wants to be a healer? Had Effie seriously just been told by the world that’s what women should do and just, been ok with it? Why not fight. Why not? Merlin, how could Effie not see the wrong in that?
“I’m not going to have you sit there and tell me to be a healer just because that’s what the world has told us to do and be.” Minnie said, Standing up and leaving. That was her dorm to. She didn’t know where she was going to go. On her way out Poppy passed her in the corridor and tried to wave. Minnie just walked passed her.
That night, Minnie had snuck back into her dorm hoping that Effie was already asleep. She wasn’t.
“Why are you still up?”
“I wanted to make sure you’d get back safe.”
