runes and other stuff… but mostly runes
From the moment I stepped into the runes classroom, I knew I would love it. I had always love languages. If I was going to have an obsession, it would be languages. The whole idea just fascinates me.
Think about it, everyone around the world is trying to say the exact same thing; however, they all say it differently. For example, in English a sentence could be ‘my love, you give my life meaning.’ It’s very simple and gets right to the point. The sentence is very romantic but the words are more just combined to make a sentence.
In Spanish that same sentence would be ‘mi amor, le das sentido a mi vida.’ The sentence flows with both male and female words. Even saying the sentence in a monotoned voice brings passion. The Spanish language makes me think of roses and sunsets, it’s so warm and bright.
In French the sentence would be ‘mon amour, tu donnes un sens à ma vie.’ I think the French spell similarly to English. Both have extra letters we don’t need and we tend to use long words when we don’t need to. French reminds me of ballet and baked goods. It’s like eating a tart makes you feel all sweet and yummy inside.
Even music is it’s own language. There are love songs, hate songs, happy pick up songs, and sad trauma songs all with the same amount of notes. The sentence as a love song would be soft and passionate in the minor key. The song would start out slow and quiet then get louder and more intense later on.
Runes is so cool because it’s a language that uses mainly pictures and graphics. It’s like how people in the ancient times used to write books before they figured out how to spell their words. It amazes me how each language made their own graphics to represent their dialect. It’s like a cooler addition of each country creating their own communication but with images. It’s so-
“Do you think Remus will sit with us?” Lily interrupted my thoughts. I have no idea why she’s taking this class, but it may be because she didn’t believe in divination or care of magical creatures.
“I would assume so, we are his mates after all.” I shrugged. Lily and I arrived early to get the good seats close to the front.
“Yes I know, but you’re sure he’d sit by us?” Lily asked. Why was she just repeating the same questions? I wasn’t remus, I couldn’t say what he would do. I can’t see into the future, we’ve already discussed divination was fake.
Remus evidently walked in, he looked lost and confused. This was his first class without the boys, maybe he was cautious about hanging around us. But that couldn’t be, we were club members, we’ve hung loads of times.
“Moony!” I waved my hand over to my head to get his attention. He looked at me and sighed in what looked like relief. I hope it was relief. He came to our table and sat next to me, putting my in the middle of him and Lily. I was unsure about this arrangement.
“I am so excited for this class! I always wondered what my fourth language would but this doubles as both a class and a hobby!”
“You speak four languages? Is that a pureblood thing?“ Remus asked. Unfortunately for me, Sirius spoke more languages than I did, and he was smug about it.
“No.. at least I don’t think so. James knows barely any Spanish because he never wanted to learn more. But I know loads of purebloods who only speak English.” I explained.
“James speaks Spanish?” Lily sounded incredibly surprised, I laughed.
“Only a tiny bit more than the average person.” My mum started out by teaching us both more languages. James got bored when he learned we had to conjugate verbs and that words had genders. Peter used to know French ages ago, but he forgot it all when we turned nine and James and Peter spent a year on broomsticks. “I think we learn languages because we don’t go to school before Hogwarts. We had a lot of free time.” I explained.
“I could never imagine not going to primary school. Where do you learn basic math and English? Who teaches you who to create group projects and presentations? Right Remus?”
“Hmm? Oh yeah. I think I’d get bored if I never went to primary.”
“I don’t think I ever got too bored…”
“You know three languages, play guitar, had almost mastered chess, and have studied the Ancient Greek gods.” Lily said immediately. She had that one prepared. Remus laughed under his breath and Lily blushed. Maybe I should switch seats with one of them.
“Fair point.” I nodded.
“Good morning children.” Professor Babbling made her entrance in the classroom. I felt it odd she chose to go by the name ‘Babbling’ and not just use her first name. I could already hear people snickering at her name or calling her mean names as puns or something. “This year we have a lot to learn. We’ll start with the most basic common phrases then move onto the harder verbs and phrases. I do not want any of you to take this class lightly. Every part will be hard work and memorizing an entire new language is going to be challenging.”
I got more excited with each word. I loved languages. I didn’t mind memorizing new ways to say things. After the first two, learning more is just fun.
“How hard is hard?” Lily whispered.
“Not very. It gets easier as you go.” I whispered back. “Plus we can help each other.”
“Remus do you want to join our study group?” Lily whispered over me. This better not be how the whole year is. Remus nodded and we turned our attention back to Babbling.
****
The whole class felt like a high. I loved every single portion of it. I think I should try to use more languages as every day dialect, or learn more languages and beat Sirius. Both options were incredibly tempting.
Mary and Marlene were waiting outside the classroom for us. James, Sirius, and Peter were waiting for Remus. Mary stood so close to Sirius, it looked like she was ready to grab him in case he tried to run away.
“How was the languages?” James asked.
“ma mère dit que plus tu parles de labgues, plus tu es pur.” Sirius sighed. Apparently in the Black family, the more worldly your vocabulary the better your blood status? His family confused me more and more.
“comment sont-ils corrélés?” I asked.
“No idea.”
“Sirius you sound so elegant when you speak French.” Mary smiled and Sirius blushed. Well, his complexion was so pale that his cheeks turned into a normal skin color. I still hadn’t heard what his brilliant idea was, but I think he wanted to be alone for that conversation.
“Are you boys done crowding the corridor?” Lily aimed her attitude to James and Sirius.
“Tell that to your stalker.” James turned his attention to Severus Snape at the end of the hall. Godric, he was everywhere that Lily was. It was actually starting to get creepy.
“He’s not a stalker! We’re just friends. And you lot never leave each other alone and you think that’s all normal!” Lily huffed at my brother. I didn’t want to agree with James, but come on. Snape was such a creep, he was practically obsessed with Lily. He was also a huge prat to everyone except Lily.
“Whatever you say Evans.” James smiled little smug which was not one of his good qualities. Lily rolled her eyes and stomped off to go join Snape.
“What does she see in that creep?” Marlene sounded like she was about to vomit.
“Do you mean she fancy’s him?” James whipped his head around to Marlene. I made eye contact with Peter as we both tried not to laugh. More and more I’m beginning to think James fancies Lily.
“Ew no! I would never let that happen!” Mary stressed.
“You have a problem against dating?” Sirius asked, I heard Remus scoff at his words.
“Oh absolutely not..” Mary changed her voice to sound slower and more passionate. What was she doing? “I just have a problem of creeps like Snape.”
“I couldn’t agree more.” Sirius grinned. I looked at Remus who looked equally grossed out.
“Anyways. We should get going.” Marlene practically pulled Mary away from Sirius. I had no idea where we going but I could tell Marlene wanted to get there as fast as humanly possible.
“But-“ Mary started.
“No time, gotta go.” Marlene began walking and dragging Mary along with her.
“Bye James and boys!” I followed Marlene and Mary who were already halfway down the corridor.
“Bye hazel!” James yelled after me.
“What was that!?” Mary whisper yelled at Marlene.
“Let’s get the radio set up. Plus you two owe me a Hogwarts birthday cake.” Marlene pulled us up the stair cases. Marlene’s birthday was in august, so we never get to celebrate. I always sent her gifts but celebrating would be fun. ‘Unfortunately’ we couldn’t watch anything on a telly because Mary’s parents refused to let her take it again. But a celebration is a celebration.
