Mystery screaming

“So why are we here?” Lily asked me, I had brought the two of us up to the astrology tower. I invited Mary and Marlene but they were busy with something, it was either something with the TV or about Mary’s crush.

“We’re here to see the full moon.” Technically, that wasn’t a lie. The full moon was the cause of something else. Last year I came up here every day for a month and the screams only came on the full moon. I wanted to learn more about whatever was out there.

“Ok.” Lily looked up at the sky, she was nice enough to pretend to be interested in it. Stars were never her thing, she was never interested in our class about it. “It’s very pretty.” She noted.

“Yes.” I nodded. I thought about Lily’s birthday party up here, our time with Snape. His take on the screaming was not my favorite. He thought they were ghosts or something. I don’t think so, ghosts scream aren’t as loud or emotional. These screams sounded like someone was trapped and was calling for help. If I could figure out what exactly it was, then I could help them.

It wasn’t long before the screaming started, it was like when the moon was clearest then immediately the screams started. They sounded so hurt, so painful. I held onto the railing, trying to find the source.

“Woah, those are ghosts right?” Lily tried to follow my gaze, we still couldn’t find anything. “Sev said the house was over there right?” She pointed to the middle of the forest. I could see other houses and stores there.

“That looks like a village, do you think it’s Hogsmeade?” I asked, I’d never been but it made sense.

“What’s Hogsmeade?”

“Oh right, it’s a wizard village by Hogwarts, I think older students get to go.” I explained.

“There’s wizard villages?”

“There’s muggle villages aren’t there? Same thing but more magic.”

“I never thought about that.” She looked both confused but understanding. As if it made sense but didn’t.

Suddenly the screaming grew louder, fiercer. It was like if a beast was let loose and was ready to reek havoc. But then some of the screams would still sound trap like there was a self fight. Like one part of you wanted to leave and run away forever but the other part knew they had to stay. The screams had such raw emotion I was tempted to go back to the common room.

“Those aren’t ghosts.” Lily breathed, I had almost forgotten she was with me.

“It sounds like a creature.” I agreed.

“Like what? A zombie? A vampire? A werewolf?” She looked scared, I realized Lily did not know many magical creatures.

“Zombies aren’t real, vampires don’t sound like that.” I said.

“What about a werewolf? It is the full moon after all!” She looked back at the shack, at the screams. I realized she might just be right, these screams only came on the full moon, the two screams fighting with each other could be man and wolf. It seemed impossible but all the facts lined up.

“Do you think there’s a werewolf at Hogsmeade?” I asked.

“Would make sense, I just can’t believe it’s so close to Hogwarts. What if it hurt a student?” Now she looked really scared.

“Maybe that’s why it’s in that shack, to not hurt anyone.” I noted.

“I think we should go.”

“Ok.”

We walked back to the common room without talking. I had no idea why Lily seemed so frightened. Maybe muggles had a history with werewolves, maybe they were monsters that doomed everything. I didn’t know. I didn’t know much about werewolves, we don’t really talk of them when we’re little. Just that they exist and that they can be very dangerous.

We entered the common room, three of the boys were sitting on the couch levitating small objects on the floor.

“Hello boys.” I said sitting the floor across from them, to my surprise Lily stayed and sat next to me.

“What are you doing?” She asked them.

“Filling our boredom.” Sirius answered

“Our mastermind felt sick so he’s at the hospital wing, leaving us with nothing to do.” Peter sighed.

“You guys really are lost with Remus.” Lily laughed

“Hey! We just don’t want to miss out on our genius.” James shot.

“Right ok.” Lily smiled, she loved getting on James nerves.

“It’s true! Just you wait we have so much planned.” James was falling right into her trap.

I couldn’t help but think about Remus’s absence. I know it was silly but a part of me wondered if wasn’t a coincidence that he was gone on the full moon. That there happened to be a werewolf running about and that he happened to be absent. No, it was too bizarre. Remus was probably just sick and I had werewolf on the brain. Remus is absolutely not a werewolf. That would be ridiculous.
