club meeting!
April and May flooded into two days for me, I swear the time just left while I wasn’t looking. Besides being given more lessons and more homework than usual, I spent my time trying to make sense of the screams we heard on Lily’s birthday. I found that they only come on the full moon which was strange. They still freaked me out so I spent less and less time fixated on it and more tentative to having fun with my friends. Lily was right that muggle songs repeat on the radio because before I knew it, I was singing along to each song and dancing like I’d grown up with them. I found it oddly satisfying.
I was studying in the common room mostly alone, there were kids from other years but my friends had all gone off. I didn’t mind, I preferred studying alone because if I studied with friends I would simply talk the entire time and get nothing done. I was rewriting all the spells I knew and what they meant while I was humming a song I learned from the radio. It was a song that I didn’t even like but it was stuck in my head. It was sung by Mary’s precious Donny Osmend but if you ask me, he’s not a very good singer and sounds like a little girl. Unfortunately one verse of the song just kept repeating in my head.
“Cos you’re too sweet! And innocent, but you’re just oh too young for me yeahhhh-“
“How do you know that song?” I turned to see remus standing behind me, he looked like I just spoke the future. Granted, he had a right to be confused; I was a pureblood who had no access to muggle songs ever, it made no sense that I knew the song.
“Uh..” I started my excellent explanation.
“Sirius doesn’t have an record of that song so how do you know it?” Remus questioned, he sounded like a detective. He was smart too, not only did he think of the ways I could know the song but he reasoned them out.
“Club meeting.” I said getting up and collecting my supplies.
“What?”
“Club meeting!” I grabbed his arm and headed out of the common room. I sighed wondering where to go but Remus pulled me behind a portrait and into a secret room.
“Woah…” I looked around, the room was tiny, the stone formed two benches across from each other with not much room in between. The room wasn’t lit but you could see from the corridor light, still I lit my wand with Lumos.
“How do you know about this room?” I asked Remus who seemed bored with it.
“That’s not why we’re having this club meeting.” He said straight faced. I remembered James said at the beginning of the year that Remus liked to explore the castle, I wondered how many secret places it had.
“This place is so cool.” I looked to Remus who was very unimpressed and looked like I was wasting his time. I got the message. “Sorry. I know the song because uh.. because..”
“Hazel, you could share your true feelings with your friends to me but not how you know a song?”
“It’s just that technically it’s from breaking rules.”
“Do you actually think I would tell on you?” He looked at me like I was an idiot, maybe I was being a tad idiotic. I just never admitted to to the severity of combing muggle and wizard technologies.
“Mary snuck a radio into hogwarts, we found a way to go against the muggle repellent spells and technically found a loophole in the law against underage wizards using magic at home. At least, Mary hasn’t been arrested or expelled just yet.”
Remus looked like he was waiting for me to say just kidding! And not actually mean to maybe break wizard law and go against Dumbledore at the same time. He honestly seemed impressed.
“And here I thought you all were too posh to break laws!” He smiled
“Proud are you?”
“My club mate is fine with breaking laws! That’s perfect!” He teased.
“I’m not into breaking law! Just ones that don’t matter if they’re broken.” My face felt hot, maybe I was more comfortable as the posh twin who does nothing wrong.
“So this radio,” Remus semi-changed the subject “this is a secret between the four of you or can the rest of us enjoy it. Sirius has a limited amount of songs on the record player.” I laughed, I didn’t feel embarrassed any more.
“I’m sure I can sneak it out of our room” I smiled
