Pink Floyd
Marlene had turned the radio on the first thing in the morning; which happened to be 7 am on a Saturday. The bad news was that she woke everyone up, the good news was that Lily talked to us.
“Marlene what do you think you’re doing?” Lily sat up in bed, Mary and I looked at her. Marlene kept her eyes on the radio.
“Pink Floyd.” Marlene said.
“What?” I asked.
“We’ve had this radio working for a little over a week, I am not leaving this spot until I hear Pink Floyd.” Marlene starred at the radio.
“Who’s Pink Floyd?” I asked.
“A muggle band that Marlene likes.” Mary explained, her eyes were still on Lily. Lily had gotten out of bed, her wand was ready in her hand, muggle music was playing in the background.
“Finite incantatum!” She yelled, but the spell bounced off of an invisible barrier around Marlene. “You cast a protection spell?!”
“I figured one of you would try.” Marlene answer calmly.
“Lily if all she’s waiting for is a song then…” Mary started.
“Of course you take her side, even though it’s early and she woke us all up!” Lily said.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Mary got out of bed now too.
“Oh come off it, we all know you two are practically inseparable.” Lily fired.
“Just like you and the massive bully, oh wait I meant snape!” Mary shot back.
“You don’t understand him!”
“I don’t want to understand the man whose called me a mudblood!”
“That’s not true!”
“You’re just upset because you know it’s true! You know he’s a horrible person yet you defend him constantly!”
“At least I don’t try to drown people in the great hall!”
“He got wet big deal! That’s probably the only shower he’s had all year!”
“I thought we were friends Mary!”
“We are! This is me trying to save you from that creep!”
“Shut up!” Lily screamed. It was a good thing Marlene put a silencing charm on our room or I was sure Alice and other sixth years would’ve charged our room for screaming this early. I had to intervene.
“Both of you shut up!” I yelled. “Look at you guys, your gripping your wands and saying rude things as if your not friends!”
“Right.” Lily said “if you were really my friend Hazel, you would’ve stopped your brother.”
“I only knew about it like a minute before you did!”
“I would’ve been able to stop it.” She said coldly.
“Sorry I’m not you then.” I said.
“God Lily, your making this whole thing such a big deal! Even some Slytherins have gotten over it, yet here you are blaming us for something we had nothing to do with! You can’t blame Hazel for something her brother did! You can’t blame us for finding it enjoyable, when they’ve spent the last half a year hating us!” I had never seen Mary so mad, her voice had so much power it, each word spoke like a punch. I wouldn’t have put Mary as a fighter before this, now she would’ve been my first choice. The room was silent except for the radio at the end of the room. At one point a new song came on, Marlene turned up the volume. The song was upbeat and more southern then rock. I had always pictured Marlene to be a rock fan, I suppose tonight was full of surprises. After a while of instrumental, the lyrics began.
You say the hill's too steep to climb Chiding You say you'd like to see me try Climbing You pick the place and I'll choose the time And I'll climb the hill in my own way Just wait a while for the right day
Marlene was singing along, Lily rolled her eyes and went to the bathroom and locked the door. Marlene kept singing, I turned to Mary.
“We’re going to have to fix this you know.” I said.
“Yeah, unfortunately I don’t think it’s gonna be easy. It’ll take a lot of steps.” She replied.
“What’s the first step?”
“Scream at each other.”
“Oh good so we’re past that hopefully. What’s next?”
“Next is usually where we share secrets and our true feelings and then it’s fixed.” She nodded.
“Great.”
