Chapter 1

Dear Mother:

I dont think I've ever told you about her, but there is a girl in my year. She’s always reading, always watching.

She craves knowledge like a fish craves water, never finding a book too dull or too boring. She watches the people in our school, watching their smiles, their sadness, the little things that make them unique. She always speaks softly, and her eyes hold such a warm feeling to them it makes you feel warm in turn. She seems to always know when someone is feeling blue, silently providing comfort that you didn’t even know you needed. She always wears her hair in a lovely plait every wednesday, and every friday she wears purple hyacinths in her hair. Her clothes are always neat and well ironed, though she wears boots with all outfits. She never wears short sleeves, no matter the weather.

The professors never call on her, even when no one in the class knows the answer and everyone knows for certain that she knows. Everyone knows that if they need help they can always go to her, because she never judges and always, always is happy to help. She has an uncanny familiarity with helping the younger ones in our year, her eyes always so much softer when speaking to them - yet when they turn to leave her eyes always turn sorrowful, as if mourning the loss of the young ones presence. Some may call her calm and resourceful, but she’s that and so much more. Not many notice the glint she gets in her eye or the quirk of her lip when someone pulls a successful prank, not many notice the flash of anger when she hears of bullying - though many notice the sudden decline in bullying, not many notice her ambition either.

Her ambition to do good, to help, to grow and so much more.

She practices piano every morning, soft tunes that float through the common room in the early mornings. There's an abandoned room a little further down from the common room that she’s claimed as hers, sometimes she asks one of us if we could watch her dance, just so she could get a feel for practicing in front of people. She asked for a cabinet to be placed in the corner of the common room, and filled it with various bits and bobs for all to use - books, board games, spare gloves and hair bands.

Of course, not everyone likes her. Some find her too creepy, too quiet, too jittery, too calm, too nice, too freaky for them.

it's quite absurd.

Harrison is a girl in my year who is always reading, always watching. She dances gracefully and plays the most beautiful tunes on the piano, always willing to help and comfort. Her Avada coloured eyes are the warmest eyes in the school, and her smiles are small but comforting. She wears her hair in a plait on Wednesdays and has purple hyacinths in her hair on fridays. She doesn’t quite fit in with the snakes, but she is comforting and lovely to all. Sometimes, I wonder if the reason she was sorted with the snakes wasn’t because of her ambition and cunning, but because she is the person who could provide the comfort and healing we as a house need.

Harrison Potter is nothing like we expected, but, quite honestly, I don’t think any of us would swap her for the world.

Love,

Tuum Draconis

Ps: No mother, I do not have a crush on her. She feels too old for that, odd as that may be seeing as we're the same age.
