something could easily be nothing
Evan's pov
A week later, they still have nothing. They found out The Carty Junior is untraceable, they found out The Carty Junior is most likely a pseudonym, they found out nothing.
They need something, and nothing is definitely not something.
They’ve all been locked in their offices since the case begun. The only time they would leave would be to go home and then return the next day. They were at a lost cause.
That was until Pandora called
“You remember what he does to sign his way out? His signature? Do you think that has any meaning behind it? I mean- look at this, letters rights?” He swiped the screen to see what she sent him. The signature, surrounded by little notes and annotations, things such as ‘letters?’ or ‘number?’ or even trying to guess what letters or numbers it could be. She’s even drawn a few pictures to try and guess if that’s what it is. She hasn’t gotten far in that, but its something.
Pandora had never been wrong about anything before, and this is another thing to add to that list. The signature wasn’t just scribbles as they all believed. It looked to be letters. Pandora, the fucking genius, had found something, and something is definitely not nothing.
“What letters best fit?” he asked
“ill show you” and again she sent him the signature but this time she hadn’t drawn around it, she’d drawn on it. She had traced over the letters to form a clear CB. In the original image, there was an extra few scribbles but that was probably just another thing to add the fancy into a signature. It was a CB. It was obvious now he was seeing it again but this time it was as if it was the first time. CB. Something.
“Initials?” he continued to press on, now very curious to find out more.
“I’ll look, do you think you can check for any businesses or something similar that may reflect the letters?”
“Definitely” He was already on it, chances are that so was Pandora.
Thanks to Pandora, they had something.
CB.
The next day, Pandora revealed what she found to the rest of the group. They were all surprised to see the first clue in their investigation had been right in front if them the entire time, Sirius was definitely annoyed not to be the one who made this discovery.
“So, CB...? Carty...? Carty and his last name, right?” James was the first to speak, still eyeing the paper Pandora had slid to them. “So, you just search up Carty B and see what comes up?”
I hadn’t thought of that” Pandora took out her laptop from her bag and began typing
“Seriously though, it was that obvious? God that’s annoying” Sirius complained
“We don’t even know if it means anything yet” Lily responded, also keeping her focus on the parchment before her, tracing the signature with her finger “could be nothing”
“Looks like something. CB...he wouldn’t make it that easy though, would he?” Marlene looked at Evan as if she expected him to have the answer, he didn’t. “Idiot if he did. It’s a lead though. Better than completely nothing”
“Have I ever told you i like the way your mind works?”
“You never stop”
That’s when Pandora spoke again “Nice call James, but it led nowhere” This caused Sirius to bang his head on the table in frustration. James, still not taking his eyes from the picture, hand now running through Sirius’ hair, said “What about the extra scribbles on top?”
“No idea. Could just be a fancy signature thing but I’m not sure” James nodded at her response, to which Lily replied with “looks like more letters if you flip it around” James followed suit before nodding in agreement to what she said.
Pandora took the paper from James to allow her and Evan to examine what they all saw. She pulled a pen loose from her bun before outlining the other letters to reveal what they were. She nodded before pushing the paper back to her colleagues. Sirius lifted his head at this to look but grunted when he failed to see it. James nodded again as Marlene spoke “I don’t see it”, Lily did as she proved when she spoke “JR”
Pandora nodded “CBJR...Carty...something Junior”
“What’s the B?” Marlene asked again to which no one answered showing they had no answer.
But they have something which is definitely not nothing.
They have something.
