Chapter 5
A while later
Leaning on the roof of the truck from the back I hum lining up the rifle scope scanning the area, I've picked off a few dead that's managed to get out but overall it's been calm.
Glancing at the time I stand up straight stretching my back groaning, I've seen two chopper leave one unmarked and the other with the Umbrella logo.
Hearing a child talking I look through my scope seeing a cop and a woman with a blonde child walking my way.
Once they get closer I start putting my rifle away "need a ride, next town's a long walk" I offer.
Hearing them agree I jump down moving to the driver's side, the woman and child climb in the back seat while the guy takes the passenger seat.
"You have a lot of stuff squeezed in here" the woman comments.
"Just push it over"
Seeing her do it I take off tapping my thumb on the wheel "were you in the City?"
Looking at the guy I nod "yeah, two days of that stuff, I decided to grab stuff before leaving after helping a chick get out safely".
"How did you get out?" The girl asks.
Laughing I pat the dash "took this big girl, and drove out without roads when needed" I say.
Hearing stuff being moved around I hear the girl ask if I was at the orphanage, nodding I glance back seeing she looks nervous "yeah, when I got in the place was empty so I just loaded up stuff".
"Do you know if anyone else got out, what about the woman you helped, what was her name?" The guy asks.
"I seen two choppers leaving, as for who I helped she was a teenager maybe 18 named Rachel, I did give a S.T.A.R.S member some guns I think her name was Jill" I answer frowning.
"You think her name was Jill?" The woman asks suddenly.
"Well I wasn't exactly introduced to her but that's what some Hispanic dude called her" I answer.
"Do you know if she got out?"
"No, I didn't see her escape but she may have, last I seen she was going to fight this huge monster that would yell Stars"
Finally reaching the town I glance seeing they fell asleep, pulling up to a diner I kill the truck before climbing out, pulling my wallet out I dig out an international calling card.
Walking to a payphone I put my coins in before starting my call, after a moment I hear the ringing stop.
"What?" The woman demands.
"Damn Aunt M, did Karl pissed in your tea or something?" I ask smirking.
"Matilda, what do you need?" She asks sigh.
"Raccoon City's gone, I'm moving to a new town but plan to make a stop to check on someone, and I have some new inventory for Dad to pick up"
"Okay, I'll inform him when he comes over, where is he heading?"
Telling her the address I'm head for she confirms she'll get it to him "now what's got you so mad?" I ask.
"Karl and Alcina fighting at the meeting, they got Angie involved and upset Donna because they ruined her dress"
Scoffing I roll my eyes "tell her I'll find Angie a new dress and that I'll kick both their asses when I come home for the holidays".
"I will dear, now the person you're going to check on, is she a candidate?"
"I'm not sure, she's a teenager and has grandparents nearby so I'll have to see, but if not I'll keep looking" I answer.
Hearing the truck door I glance seeing the woman coming over "okay good work" Miranda says.
"Love you to Auntie, I'll see you soon bye" I say seeing her stop looking at me, hanging up I put my card away before stepping back motioning to the phone.
"Oh, hey is the kid hungry?" I ask before walking to far.
She shrugs "maybe" she answers.
Nodding I walk back to the truck seeing her looking around nervously "hey kid, you hungry?" I ask motioning to the diner.
Seeing her nod but grab the cops hand I head in hearing them follow, moving to a table I sit down waiting for the waitress to come over again after dropping on menus off.
Humming I open mine tapping the page "can I have a breakfast plate?" She asks.
Nodding I look at it humming "three breakfast platters and one kids platter sound good?" I ask looking at the guy.
"Yeah sure" he says sounding unsure while getting his wallet out.
Rolling my eyes I look at the menu again to decide what else I want, once the waitress comes back I place the orders ignoring the cop looking shocked at me.
"What's your name?" The girl asks smiling.
"Matilda" I respond.
"I'm Sherry, that's Leon and Claire"
Making a confused face I glance at him before looking back at the kid, leaning forward slightly I place my hand up like I'm covering my mouth from Leon's view "that seems a little funny he's named Claire, is it short for Clarence?" I ask is stage whisper.
Hearing her giggle slightly I glance at Leon before looking back to her "I think he heard me" I add seeing him shake his head smiling slightly.
"No, he's Leon, she's Claire" Sherry says still giggling slightly.
"Oh, that makes more sense" I add just as Claire comes in.
"Claire, her names Matilda" Sherry says smiling at her.
Seeing a waitress coming with two plates I smile seeing her sit Sherry's in front of her before looking unsure on the adult order.
"Just give it to her we can wait" I say motioning to Claire.
"Thanks" Claire says softly as Sherry starts eating.
Nodding I wave it off "what's your plan now?" Leon asks.
"I'm going another town over, check on the chick I helped then figure out from there" I answer as two more plates come out to us.
A bit later
Standing up I ignoring their shocked expression over how much I ate, moving to the counter I pay for the food before heading out to the truck.
Digging in the back I lift an outfit for Sherry before trying to dig up one for Claire and Leon, finding one I nod to myself before grabbing a stuffed bear and book stuffing them in a child's backpack I grabbed from the store.
Walking back in I hand everything to Claire "here and good luck" I say calmly before walking back out to the truck.
Getting in I start it and take off.
