“James…”
He turns around so fast that she has no time to stop and runs straight into him. His arms unfold and hold her steady. She looks up from where she near collided into his chest to his face and sees his eyes are wide and... to her bewilderment... horrified.
“What’s wrong?” he asks, his voice filled with concern.
“Nothing’s wrong,"she answers, suddenly flustered. "I just wanted to tell you I got an interview with the Stokers Brewery. And well, I think your dad’s letter of recommendation really helped with that. So I wanted to thank you for asking him to do that for me.”
Lily trails off. He’s still just staring at her, and it’s more than a little unnerving. Just as she’s about to shake him to tell her what on earth has him this rattled, it seems her words have trickled their way into his conscience. His face relaxes. He looks genuinely happy now.
“Congratulations, Ev… Lily.”
She blinks... He never calls her... Oh.
