He heard a rumour she had a good time yesterday.
Someone spotted her having lunch with him.
He knows, rationally, it’s just some made-up story. Because his fellow students are stupid, brainless, impressionable creatures. Students with little more to do than to make up bullshit stories about who does what with whom.
And she’s not just anyone.
People notice her, thus people talk, she draws people in, even if she doesn’t like to be the centre of the attention; he knows this, he knows her, he knows she would never… she wouldn’t do that to him… Before…
He lost her, one slur that snapped out of his mouth was all it took.
He doesn’t want to hear it.
He doesn’t want to know.
It’s just a rumour.
