“excuse me, I now have to make a scene,”

Remus was walking back from classes, keeping his head down, trying to get to the dorm before his friends so he had a dream of getting any homework done that night, when he suddenly felt a hand land on his shoulder. Heaving a heavy sigh, he turned around, fully expecting Sirius or James to have captured him during his escape. That was not who he was meet with.

“Lupin,” Luciuse said, in an obnoxiously snobby voice.

“Lucy,” Remus replied, smirking at the nickname he had assigned the Malfoy. “What the hell do you want?”

“I started a new read this weekend,” Luciuse said. Remus rolled his eyes, wanting the interaction to speed up. “It was quite interesting,”

“Do you have a fucking point?” Remus asked. “Other than your right-angled nose?” Luciuse just smiled at the insult.

“See, here’s the thing,” He said. “I thought that the book seemed a little to familiar, so I did some digging,”

“Thrilling,” Remus said. “I’m sure your parents were excited to see you finally learned to read. What was it? Go-dog-Go?”

“Well that is when I found out that your last name- well it’s rather unique isn’t it?” Luciuse asked. “Very few people with the name Lupin out there. I found one “Remus Lupin” in my searches, and one “Hope Lupin,” who seemed to be your mother…”

“You wouldn’t say,” Remus said sarcastically, turning back around and walking away. “Thanks for letting me know,”

“And then Lupin, I found exactly what I was looking for. One “Lyall Lupin,” published the very same book I had picked up in the store,” He said.

“Yeah, my dad used to be an author,” Remus said, shrugging as he continued to trudge on to the dorms, unfortunately being tailed by the blond. “What’s it to you?”

“Used to be?” Luciuse asked. “Well, clearly you haven’t been to a bookstore worth it’s weight recently,”

Remus paused, turning to look at Luciuse. “What the hell are you talking about?”

“Don’t worry, I thought you might not be able to afford your own copy, so I picked one up for you,” Luciuse said, handing Remus a wrapped present. “It was most definitely… enlightening,”

Luciuse was already walking away as Remus tore off the paper binding the book, turning it around until he could see the front cover. As Luciuse had promised, his fathers name was in a small golden font at the bottom of the page, and glancing at the title made Remus feel sick.

“fuck,”Remus muttered to himself, turning the book over a few times in his hands. “Fuck,”

Not wanting to see another soul, Remus shoved the book into his bookbag and literally ran up to the dorms, blowing past the stairs that normally gave him pause -and a healthy appreciation for life whenever he passed them- and quietly mumbled the password to Gryffindor. The moment the painting swung open, Remus climbed through the wall and passed the common room, on his way to the dorm.

By some miracle, no one stopped him, and he was able to make it all the way up to his room and collapse into his bed after just a few minutes. Pulling the curtains tight and tying them to the the bedposts, he turned the book over in his hands.

It was a simple cover, and easily over 300 pages long. The beveled edges scraped against his thumb as he flipped through the writing. Maybe with a more inconspicuous title it wouldn’t have been such a big deal, but this book was leaving nothing up to the imagination. And either way, Luciuse had apparently read the whole thing, so Remus was pretty sure it was only a matter of time either way.

As he was sitting there, knees pulled to his chest on his bed, the book lying in front of him, he heard the door slam open and shut, and the voices of James and Sirius fill the room. He didn’t care to figure out what they were bantering about, but they seemed enthralled with the topic. Until they weren't.

“Were Remus’s curtains drawn this morning?” Sirius asked.

“I doubt it, he woke up late,” James replied. Sirius’s footsteps grew closer, and the younger man rapped his fingers against the wooden frame of Remus’s bed.

“Moony?” He asked. “You in there?”

Remus, wiping any sneaky tears off of his face, crawled to the end of his bed and slowly untied one of the curtains, peaking out.

“Maybe,” Remus said. Sirius’s demenior instantly shifted the moment he saw Remus. Apparently he wasn’t as good at hiding his emotions as he would like to think. James must have picked up on it as well, because he came to stand behind Sirius, looking over his friend's shoulder.

“What’s wrong?” Sirius asked, drawing his brow together as he studied Remus for a second. “Are you okay?”

“Fine, why?” Remus replied, trying to ‘inconspicuously’ wipe any remaining tears from his face.

“You look upset,” James said. Remus sighed heavily, looking at them for a minute.

“Luciuse gave me this in the hallway today,” Remus said. “I just… I don’t know what to do,” As he spoke he reached back and handed over his book to the two friends. Sirius’s eyebrows rose as he read the title, before handing it to James.

“Confessions Of A Deadbeat, How I Ruined My Son’s Life,’ By Lyall Lupin,” James said, scowling at the book.

“It’s all about me and Greyback and shit,” Remus said. “And Luciuse has already read the whole thing. He’s going to tell everyone,”

“That’s not going to happen,” James said. Remus gave him a dubious look, wiping his eyes again. “We won’t let it,”

“We won’t,” Sirius said, reaching out and pulling Remus into a hug. “Now, if you will excuse me, I have to go make a scene,”

“Where are you going?” Remus asked, standing up from the bed. “Sirius? Where are you going?”

“I’ll be back,” Sirius said. Remus turned to look at James, but Sirius was already out the door. Shaking his head, James turned back to look at Remus.

“Sirius does as Sirius does,” James said. “Don’t worry about it,”

“Don’t worry about it?” Remus asked. “This whole situation is one long worry,”

“It doesn’t have to be,” James said. “Here, show me the book, I’ll look through it with you, I’m sure it’s not as bad as it looks at first,”

---

“Luciuse,” Sirius said, storming into the courtyard.

“Oh look, the ‘Black Sheep’ finally decided to show his face,” Luciuse said. “I’ll be sure to tell Mommy and Daddy where you wandered off to-”

The rest of the Malfoys sentence was cut off when Sirius struck Luciuse across the mouth, knocking him down. Reeling from the attack, Luciuse spat out blood, crawling back from Sirius before he staggered back to his feet. Sirius got a few more blows in before pulling him back up so they could talk.

“You’ll regret that,” Luciuse threatened.

“Oh will I?” Sirius asked. “Will I regret it? Because let me tell you something,” Walking up to his cousin, Sirius grabbed the man by his hair, pulling him so that Sirius could speak directly into his ear. “If you get Remus kicked out of this school, then I am writing your father and telling him you were caught snogging a muggleborn boy outside of the astrology tower. You think my parents are bad? You haven’t seen anything yet,”

“Fuck you,” Luciuse said. “They wouldn’t believe you,”

“Wouldn’t they?” Sirius said. “Are you willing to bet your life on your father trusting you?”

“Just because you are unloved,” The Malfoy seethed. “Doesn't mean I am,”

“We all are,” Sirius said. “There isn’t a pureblood in our family who hasn’t felt the Crucio curse. You wanna test fate?”

Any retort was cut off, as apparently the fight had made a bit of a splash in the courtyard, and both Slughorn and Mcgonagall were racing to pull the boys apart. Sirius let go of his relative, watching his sputter a explanation to Slughorn as blood dripped from his mouth. He felt quite satisfied with himself until he turned around and saw McGonagall standing not a foot from his face.

“Minny,” Sirius said, stretching out his arms. “What a lovely surprise,”

“Fifty points from Gryffindor,” She said in a appalled voice. “And I will be speaking to you in  my office immediately,”

“Yes ma’am,”

Walking a little sheepishly behind her, he made sure he still found time to wink at a group of girls he passed by, amused by their giggles as he did so. After that, he searched the crowd for James and Remus, but they apparently weren't there, having stayed in the dorms for the fight. Rolling up his bloody sleeve cuffs, he followed McGonagall all the way into her office until the door slammed behind them both of its own accord.

“Sit,” She said severely. Sighing, he sat down in a chair, raising his eyebrows at her. “Well I hope you feel a sense of shame,”

“Not really,” Sirius said. “He deserved it,”

“I cannot imagine that he did,” She said.

“But he did,” Sirius said. “He was trying to get Remus kicked out of school,”

“I doubt that,” She said. “And if he was that is a problem you deal with through the school not with your fists in the courtyard.”

“The school dosn’t mean shit to him,” Sirius said. “He’s not scared of anyone here, he wouldn’t listen,”

“So you thought you would scare him yourself?” She asked in exasperation.

“Not me,” Sirius said. “But he’s done things he doesn't want his father to know,”

“Okay- can you just explain to me exactly what happened without changing any of the story?”

---

“Remus, don’t worry, this is in the middle of the book, I promise you no one is going to read this much of your fathers writing,” James said. Remus stared at him, before picking up the book.

“My son Remus Lupin was the 49th victim of Fenrir Greyback and the only one to survive beyond a month with his injuries. Despite his survival he was plagued with lycanthropy- I’ll be kicked out of the school James. Someone will read it- hell Malfoy already did,”

“You don’t know if he read the whole thing, all you know is that he knows about the book,” James said. “It’ll be alright,”

“No it won’t be James. I am here illegally, if people find out not only will I get in trouble, the whole fucking school gets in trouble, do you have any idea what parents would do if they found out their children had been hanging around a werewolf?”

“Dumbledore is untouchable,” James said. Remus scowled at him.

“No one is untouchable,”

A knocking on the door interrupted their conversation, and both turned to look at McGonagall in the doorway.

“Mr. Lupin, I must speak to you at once,” She said, wringing her hands. Remus and James stood up at the same time, and she didn’t even comment on James’s presence as they walked down the hallway.

Inside her office, Sirius sat, balancing the chair on two legs as he fiddled with his fingers, bloody sleeves cuffed at the elbow. Turning to look at them, he gave Remus a reassuring smile.

“Mr. Black, Mr. Potter, you two wait outside,” She said.

“But-”

“Go,”

---

Remus walked out of her office, head down as he approached his friends, who were sitting in the hallway, waiting for him. Standing up, James walked over to him.

“So? What did she say?” James asked.

“I’m not getting kicked out, so long as no one freaks out to much,” Remus said. “She’s going to talk to Dumbledoor about getting the book banned on campus, so it’ll literally blow up if anyone here tries to read it. Won’t help much if their parents do, but should be better,”

“That’s good,” James said. Remus nodded.

“It’s no guarantee,” Remus said.

“It’s better then nothing,” James said.

“Besides,” Sirius added, standing up. “If anyone tries to kick you out, I’ll just beat them up to,”

“Very funny,” Remus said, before noticing his sleeves. “Holy fuck is that blood?”

“Pure blood at that,”
