“please don’t let me fall,” “never,”
“Mr Lupin, where exactly do you think you’re going?” The professor asked. Remus, his face a mix of anxiety and disdain, gave them an annoyed look.
“I’ll take the zero for this Professor,” Remus said.
“You can’t just opt out,” They said.
“That's strange, because it appears that is exactly what I am doing,” Remus said, his hands on his narrow hips. “I’ll be in the library until the next class,”
“You don’t have to go very high, but it is important to-”
“Look it’s not happening,” Remus said, wrinkling his nose at the offencive broom in the teacher's hand. “Sorry,”
The teacher sighed, looking at the stubborn blond in front of him. “30 points from gryffindor,”
Above them, James stopped his broom, flying down. He was a little wobbly, but the thrill of flying was enticing to him, and he swooped to ground level a little too fast.
“30 points? Rem just get on the bloody broom,”
“No,” Remus said. “We’ve lost more,”
“Mr. Potter, please stick to the assigned exercises,” The professor said. While his attention was diverted, Remus excused himself, listening faintly to the sound of his friend arguing before he finally slipped back inside to safety.
He would spend the rest of the quarter dodging the teacher in hallways and skipping class to hide in the library.

“I literally cannot watch you do that,” Remus said, cringing as he covered his eyes.
“what?” Sirius asked, hanging upside down on his broom as he flew closer. “Does this scare yah?”
“Yes- dear Lord, you know brain damage can be irreversible right? What could you possibly gain from that?”
“Adrenaline,” Sirius said. “Right Prongs?”
“And the thrill of it,” James said, swooping down.
“That’s the same- nevermind,” Remus said, not feeling like giving a grammar lesson at the moment.
“Come on, why don’t you grab a broom and try-” James started.
“Nope,” Remus said, sitting up. “Nope nope, not happening,”
“Oh come on Moony,” Sirius said, hovering next to his friend.
“You couldn’t make me do that if you strapped me on,” Remus said. “I’d rather bash my own head in,”
“Next time you call me dramatic I am referencing this conversation,” Sirius said. The other fourth year swooped down, putting a hand on Remus’s shoulder.
“We’ll go real slow,” He offered. And even in the joking tone there was an air of sincerity. James was good at toeing the line between making fun of someone and genuinely trying to help. Remus couldn’t care less though, and he shook off the hand.
“I couldn’t care less,” Remus said, shooting a look of disdain at the offensive piece of sports equipment. “I don’t care if it’s three inches higher then normal, I’m not doing it,”
“Oh come on,” Sirius said. “It’s really not that bad when you get up here,”
“I. Don’t. Care.” Remus said, his voice tighter than he wanted. Sirius and James exchanged a look, and James stretched his hand out to Sirius, nodding at him slightly. Sirius took the cue and swung his broom around so he was flying backwards next to Remus.
“If you ever want to,” Sirius said, stretching his arms out a little bit.
“We won’t make you if yah don’t,” James said, his tone reassuring. Remus paused his retreat back to the dorms to give him a skeptical glance. “Right Pads?”
“Course,” Sirius said, stopping in front of Remus. “As long as you don’t want to,”
“I really don’t,” Remus said, smiling tightly. Sirius nodded, accepting the answer.
“Okay,” Sirius said.
“I’m going back to the dorms until I can feel my hands,” He said. “You to just- ugh, be careful up there,”
“Aye aye captain,”
---
It was a cold day, mid January, and Sirius had been kept home from work due to a half inch of snow on the ground. Completely not prepare for the dusting they got in the city, even the wizarding world was wary of the powdery white substance. So, Sirius and Remus were cooped up for the day.
While Remus was very very content to watch the snow fall from the window, after indulging his husband for awhile, Sirius got bored and somehow convinced him to go out into the back garden with him. Although garden was a relative term, it was more like a field. The Black house was on almost 3 acres of land, with huge trees surrounding the perimeter that thinned the closer you got to the house.
“It looks like a wonderland, Remmy,” Sirius said, jumping out and spinning around.
“It’s fucking freezing,” Remus said. He actually ran far warmer then Sirius, but emotionally had a much lower tolerance for the cold.
Sirius giggled, running over and hugging him. Remus was less enchanted by the snow. Partially because his fathers farm got a lot more of it then where Sirius lived, and partially because he had spent the first 17 years of his life trudging through it to feed animals at 4:30 in the morning. Given that he was a bit disenchanted.
“We should have a snowball fight,” Sirius said. Remus raised an eyebrow, kicking the ground.
“It’s too dry,” Remus said. “Not much you can do other then look at it,”
“At least it’s pretty,” Sirius said, his enthusiasm undamped. Then after a second, his face lit up and he turned to look at Remus, a glint in his eyes.
“Oh no,”
“You wanna do something fun?” He asked, looking at Remus. Remus narrowed his eyes, shoving his hands in his pockets.
“Like what?” Remus asked. “Because your definition of fun and my definition of fun are very different,”
“It won’t involve the snow,” Sirius said. “But it is outside,”
Remus sighed, asking himself how stupid he actually was for going along, before mumbling out a agreement.
“Wait right here,” Sirius ran off, coming back a minute later with two brooms in hand.
“No-”
“Please?” Sirius asked.
“I’m going to fall to my death,”
“I won’t let you fall,” Sirius said, his eyes big as he silently begged his husband to go along. “Please Moony?”
Remus was holding firm, until something in Sirius’s eyes made him reconsider. He hated brooms, hated the idea of them, hated the injuries wizards got from them every year, hated the stupid sport they went along with. But for whatever reason, in this specific moment, he found it hard to say no.
“If I fall off I am not speaking to you for a week,” Remus said.
“And I wouldn’t blame you,” Sirius said, his face lighting up. Remus regretted agreeing immediately, but seeing Sirius look so delighted made it easier to ignore the fear already settling in the pit of his stomach.
“Here,” Sirius said, handing him a broom. “First just make it hover before you get on,”
“Like just- anything else?” Remus asked.
“No it’s a special kind of magic, just kinda pull it up,” He said. Remus Copied Sirius’s hand movement, and almost immediately the broom wizzed into his hand, Remus jumped back a little as it made contact with his palm, making Sirius laugh.
“What,” He asked, annoyed.
“It’s not going to bite you,” Sirius said. “Are you really that scared of them?”
“Do you want me to do this or not?” Remus asked. Sirius smirked at him, but continued without comment.
“Then you just swing a leg over,” Sirius said, demonstrating. Remus took a step back, looking at the broom distrustfully. “Oh we’re not even off the ground yet,”
“Sorry sorry,” Remus said, muttering to himself in annoyance as Sirius watched. All of his limbs felt heavy and numb with fear, and they didn’t move the way he wanted them to. Shakily, he tried to climb onto the broom and almost fell off the other end, saved only by his husband zipping over and steadying him.
“Why did I let you talk me into this?” Remus asked.
“Because you love me?” Sirius asked. Remus groaned.
“Unfortunately I do,”
The banter did little to ease Remus’s mind as he wobbled on the stick. Sirius held him, firm but not as secure as Remus thought he should, as Remus tried to find balance. Once he was close enough to manage, Sirius let go.
“Whoa whoa whoa-”
“You’re fine Remmy, you won’t fall from here,” Sirius said. “You’re a inch or so off the ground,”
“I hate this,” Remus said. “I hate this,”
“You’re doing great,” Sirius said. “Now we’re just going to go up,”
“Wait-”
“I’m just going to pull you up with me so you don’t have to learn,” Sirius said. “James struggled with stopping the first few times he did it and just kept on going,” The story did nothing to make Remus feel better, and his face looked grey and ashy. Sirius grinned at him. “But that won’t happen with you,”
“Sure it won’t,” Remus said. Sirius, holding onto his own handle with one hand, and Remus’s broom with the other, slowly pulled them up until they were about 8 feet off the ground. “Whoa whoa whoa whoa-”
“You’re okay, I’ve got you see?” Sirius said, tightening his grip on Remus’s broom. Any sense of confidence Remus may have had before was completely gone as his eyes stayed transfixed of the far off ground. He was pretty sure he wouldn’t survive that.
“Please don’t let me fall,” Remus said, his eyes wide and wild. Sirius grinned at him, completely at ease.
“Never,”
Remus felt extra wobbly, and white knuckled the broom, desperate to not fall off. He felt like he couldn’t breathe, and even though logically he knew the air was no thinner, he sure felt like he was getting less oxygen per breath up here. Sirius flew closer to him, and instead of holding onto his own broom, adjusted his grip so one arm was around Remus’s shoulder, he other holding him steady.
“Don’t look down,” Sirius said gently. “Look up. Isn’t it beautiful up here?”
The trees and houses covered in snow were quite pretty. He could make out James and Lily’s place, only a ten minute walk from their front door. The roads were almost untouched as no one was brave enough to venture out into the snow yet, and everything seemed relatively peaceful.
Well everything other then a particular airborne werewolf.
“I’m pretty sure humans wern’t made to be this high up,” Remus said.
“Rem our house is higher then this,” Sirius said. Remus wasn’t paying attention to him though. Instead he was scanning the world around them, his eyes wide with danger.
Sirius felt his heart clench a little, seeing Remus so scared. He’d always known he was afraid of heights, but not this afraid. They were barely off the ground. Deciding that this wasn’t going well, Sirius took a different approach.
“Remus, look at me,” Sirius said, jostling the other ones shoulder, which in hindsight was maybe a bad idea. Remus did meet his eyes though. “Do I look scared?”
“No,” Remus said, his eyes locking onto Sirius’s.
“Right,” Sirius said. Without letting Remus on, he slowly started to ease their brooms up a little higher. “Because there is nothing to be scared of. You won’t fall. And if you do, I will catch you,”
“But-”
“I won’t let you fall,” Sirius reassured him. “You’ll be just fine,”
“This is just awful high,” Remus said, and Sirius chuckled.
“But see how well you’re doing? And you thought you couldn’t do it before,” Sirius said.
“I still feel like I can’t do it,” Remus said, laughing a little breathlessly. He still looked absolutely petrified with fear, but with his eyes locked onto Sirius’s there was a little more security then he had felt before.
“Now for the fun part,” Sirius said. “We go forward,”
“No no wait a second-” Remus said, his eyes widening.
“Remus,” Sirius said, in the calmest voice he could muster. “I’ve got you,”
“Just don’t go to fast,” Remus mumbled. Sirius grinned.
“Okay,” He said. “Now hold on,”
