Remus:
“James I swear to fuck, if you don’t stop crying right in my fucking ear, you will be hopping the rest of the way!” Lily said. She currently had one of James’ arms wrapped around her shoulder, and was helping him walk to the ship.
James had been whining about his leg for majority of the time they had all been walking, and it was safe to say, lily wasn’t the only one considering just putting him out of his pain and killing him off.
“Oh I’m fucking sorry, how would you like it if some scary ass woman stabbed a knife through your leg,” he said shouting right in lily’s ear just to piss her off before turning to look behind him at the two black children. “No offence.”
Both the Blacks gave each other a quick side glance, but said nothing.
The youngest of the two brothers, was still stuck between Marlene and Emmeline, meanwhile the older one was next to Fabian and Gideon, who both had a tight grip on him.
Majority of the speed walk to the ship was quite silent, apart from James complaining every two seconds about his leg. The brothers were quiet but It was clear they were communicating with their eyes. To be fair Remus didn’t have a clue what they were talking about (if you could even call it talking) and he quiet frankly didn’t want to know. Marlene seemed to have noticed too, and she looked like she had seen a murder take place, you could practically see her brain trying to work out what they were saying.
The moonlight was beating down on them and they were soon to approach the ship, which meant they wouldn’t have to listen to James’ complaints much longer.
They were all trying to be as quiet as possible (minus the two blacks, for obvious reasons) while lightly jogging through the town, because most people were bound to be in bed and trying to sleep or they would be down at the local pub, very much pissed.
Although it was dark, Remus could see that the town was quite beautiful, with its tall, gorgeous, buildings, that some people were lucky to call their homes. The fact that the town was even by a port and the sea made this town seem almost like paradise.
If Remus wasn’t a pirate, he was very much sure he would want to live here. This place was basically ten year old Remus’ heaven. He could practically imagine himself waking up at the crack of dawn each morning just to run down to the beach, and watch the sun rise. Maybe he would have a book with him, so he could keep himself occupied while he spent his day down by the sand. But somewhere deep down inside himself he knew he would never truly belong there.
Remus broke out of his daydreaming and saw that the ship was in front of him.
Now that was his home!
The ship really was quite wonderful. It was average sized and it had your standard equipment and needs for a ship, but only the crew knew how truly great this ship was.
The crew of The Lost Souls wasn’t just a crew, it was a family. The crew mates came from all sorts of terrible places and Mad Eye Moody took them in. No matter what your background was, you were always welcome on the ship, ‘because your past is irrelevant, what matters is your future’ is what Mad Eye says.
Mad Eye was like a father figure to Remus. He had known him for the longest because Remus was his first crew mate. He took Remus in at a time when he thought there was no good in the world, and he showed him how to be his greatest.
Mad Eye taught him everything he knows, like how to fight, how to use a sword, or how to steer and maintain a ship. Mad eye and him had a strange bond, but it was the uniqueness of this bond that made it so special.
Mad Eye says he doesn’t pick favourites, but everyone knows that’s a lie. Remus feels oddly proud to be considered Mad Eyes favourite, he likes the responsibility he is left with, he likes that Mad Eye can trust him the way that he trusts him. And although Remus would never say it to Mad Eyes face (because that would make him sound like a pussy), but he really does care for the guy, and that’s why he’s so scared to lose him.
Remus has never been scared a day in his life since he was ten, but when Mad Eye was shot at in the leg, Remus felt his fear overtake him. Mad Eye was still hanging in there after their attack with the death eaters, but his wound was infected, and although he wouldn’t admit it, Remus could tell it was giving him grief. That’s why Remus had felt so relieved when Fabian and Gideon had hit the medical jackpot at the Black mansion.
Everyone made their way up the ramp, to the ship, where they were met with an extremely worried looking Peter.
Peter was the ships cook, and merlin was he good at his job. He had sandy blonde hair and pleasant cheek dimples on his rosy plump face, which made him look like the most friendliest out of the crew. Peter joined the crew the same time as Marlene, the were both found at a pub. The crew were on land for a few days so they headed out for tea. Peter worked at the pub and had made them the most mouth watering fish and chips any of them ever had. Meanwhile Marlene was bartending and a guy started hitting on her, long story short she ended up shoving a spatula in his eye and breaking his wrist with her bare hands. The guy however had a crew with him and they were about to kill both Peter and Marlene before Remus and the crew stepped in.
“Dear lord what the fuck happened to you lot.” Peter said with horror on his face.
“Oh, you know, just the usual Saturday night. I had a brush with death, BUT ITS NO BIG FUCKING DEALLL!” James shouted. “For the love of Godric, someone go get Molly, I can’t take this pain any longer.”
“I’ll go!” Marlene volunteered, rushing away before anyone else could, clearly sick of James’ complaining.
“ OW, LILY THAT FUCKING HURT!” James screamed as lily attempted to lowered him, so he could sit on a crate, but instead failing miserably and essentially chucking him on the crate, causing him to roll off of it and land on the floor with a loud thud.
“What the fuck is going on it sounds like someone’s been stabbed-“ Molly said, while coming up the stairs from the lower deck, with Marlene shortly behind her, and Marlene appeared to have wrapped a pillow over her ears. “Nevermind I stand corrected, how the fuck did you manage to get yourself stabbed prongs?”
“Yeah how exactly did you manage to get stabbed?” Remus asked trying to understand the whole story.
“Well you see Remus, a fucking psychopath shoved a bloody blade through my leg.”
“Yeah I kinda gathered that, now will you stop being such a sarcastic prick for two minutes so I can understand what really happened.”
“Everything was going to plan,” lily said taking over the story, while one dramatic James had his leg looked over by Molly. “They arrived at the building like you said, and me and James surprised them. We started fighting them, I handled Wallburga, while James went for Orion. James managed to kill Orion just as I was finishing off old Wally.”
A sharp gasp came from the younger black brother. He looked as if he had been slapped across the face, but almost relieved at the same time.
“ I thought she was dead,” lily continued. “ I swear I checked to make sure she wasn’t breathing but she must have been holding in her breath or something, because just before we were about to leave, she jumped up out of nowhere and plunged her blade through James’ leg. I managed to get her off him and pin her to the floor, but then she started going on about how the dark lord was coming for us and some bullshit like that. I was so confused about what she was saying I didn’t realise she’d managed to get her arm free. She flipped me over and was just about to stab me when James hit her over the back of the head with a chair, and I’m pretty sure you know the rest after that.”
“Now you tell us how we ended up with two lovely looking hostages.” Jame piped in, after lily was finished. Sending a wink over to the Black brothers. Both brothers sent a look over to one another, which looked to be a ‘don’t say or do anything, we’re trying to be stubborn pricks’ kinda look.
“Well Moody told me the Blacks had two young sons, but when he said young I assumed we were talking four or five years old.” Remus said looking over at the brothers.
“Just out of curiosity how old are you two?” Marlene said, shouting slightly, unable to hear herself because of the pillow over her ears.
Both brothers stayed dead silent. Marlene flickered her eyes between the two of them with a questioning look.
“Deaf or something?” Marlene asked with a raised eyebrow, yet agin with a raised voice.
“Nah I just reckon they’ve never communicated with other human beings apart from each other, and of corse mummy and daddy dearest.” Gideon said.
“Oh, I think you forgot to mention our maid.” The older Black said in a sarcy tone.
“So they do talk then, brilliant.” Marlene said rolling her eyes.
“But that still doesn’t explain why you had to bring them, I mean could you could have just like,” James made a slice their throats action, and then Molly hit him in the shoulder.
“Stop moving, I’m still trying to make sure your leg isn’t infected.”
“Jeez, sorry mum.” James said and to that Molly gave him another slap, but this time on his thigh, which caused James to wince.
“This stubborn prick here,” Remus said, pointing to the eldest Black. “Has the locket on his neck, and we were just about to get it off of him before two idiots came barging in telling us that old Wallburga Black was on her way to kill us.”
“Oh yeah, sorry about that.” Lily said with a sheepish smile.
“Anyway, where’s Moody? Because I have two lovely guests for him to meet.”
“Still knocked out I’m afraid,” Molly said before turning back to James. “Alright I’m gonna have to clean your leg now, and I’ll not lie, this is probably going to hurt like fuck.”
“Just do it, get it over with.” James said, as he closed his eyes and scrunched up his face, then turned his head away. He grabbed Lily’s hand and was holding onto it for dear life.
“Ok but don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
Molly picked up a damp cloth, and as soon as it touched James’ leg, he was screaming like he was being chased by his worst nightmare. Remus was pretty sure he had gone deaf at one point, because the screaming got so high pitched it started sounding like white noise. Marlene was practically trying to shove the pillow in her ear, the Blacks looked as if they were feeling James pain, the same went for Fabian and Gideon. Meanwhile Emmeline appeared unbothered, but to be fair nothing really makes Emmeline Vance wince. Lily looked as if her hand was being run over by a ship, but yet she didn’t snatch it away from James which showed how much of a good friend she was.
As soon as Molly was done, Lily snatched her hand back and tried to move it about, but it looked almost crushed. She would probably have Molly check over it later. Then Emmeline started laughing.
“That wasn’t very sunshiny of you James.”
The whole crew had a joke going that James was like the sun. He was always very cheery and positive, and anytime he was in the room it just seemed to brighten up. Remus knows it sounds stupid but he practically can see James glow anytime he excited or happy about anything. So whenever James is sad or mad or upset, the whole crew feels it. They’re kinda of like flowers, whenever the sun isn’t there they can’t bloom and grow, so they kind of shrivel up and die, and that’s how everyone feels when James is sad.
“Fuck off Vance.” James said, flipping her off.
“Well if Moody isn’t waking up anytime soon, we better get these two down to the brig.” Remus decided, knowing fine well that James would be needing stitches and would soon be screaming again. “Fab and Gid come with me to make sure these two don’t try anything they’ll regret.”
“I’ll come too,” Marlene added, obviously catching on as well. “You know, just in case.”
Remus rolled his eyes at her and gave her a nudge in the shoulder as the six of them made their way down into the ship.
About two minutes after Remus shut the door behind them, James was screaming again and Remus thanked Merlin he wasn’t there because he was definitely screaming louder than last time. His sympathy went out to Lily, who was sadly still stuck with him.
They headed down to the brig, which was down on the bottom level of the ship, although it wasn’t much of a brig. For one it was basically just a cell inside the kitchen, and if Remus was being honest they mainly just used it to store animals they were planing to cook. They didn’t normally have many hostages, but the Blacks didn’t need to know that.
Fabian and Gideon shoved them in the cell and locked it, then handed Remus the key. Remus attached it to a chain on his neck, and looked to see the eldest Black was raising an eyebrow at him.
“What? You get to have your little accessories and I get to have mine.” Remus said, pointing to the locket around the older brothers neck with a smirk, then he tucked the key into his shirt. “Just for safe keeping’s.” He said to the Black brother.
“Alright then job well done,” Marlene said. “Dunno about you but I’m fucking shattered so I’m just go sleep. Don’t worry yourselves if I don’t appear for a few days. I’m not dead I’m just going to be sleeping off this traumatic day.”
And with that she headed back up a set of stairs to the sleeping quarters. Shortly after, Fabian and Gideon left as well.
Remus headed over to the stove, where there was a pot and he dished himself out some food. Then he grabbed a beer and headed to the door.
“Goodnight lads, I promise the rats don’t bite.” Remus turning to head out, but then he stopped and turned back round again to look at the two posh snobs standing, shivering for their lives. “Do you know what? I’m not kidding anyone. The rats do bite, but if one does happen to bite you please don’t scream at wake the rest of us up, I think we’ve all heard enough screaming for one night. Cheers.”
And with that Remus slammed the door and head back to his room with a content smile.
Godric, he just loved making posh snobs lives a fucking misery.
Regulus:
Regulus couldn’t sleep.
Which to be fair was a normal thing. He doesn’t really like the idea of sleeping. The whole being unconscious and not knowing what’s happening scares him.
Regulus is very much an observer, and he likes to know what’s going on, he finds comfort in it.
Right now though, that was not why he was awake.
He’d been throwing up his entire meals from the past week for a couple of hours now. It didn’t help that the sea was extremely choppy on this particular night, because regulus is already petrified of the ocean, never mind a violent one.
His stomach was starting to calm down now, just like the sea, but yet he still couldn’t fall asleep. So he decided to do what he does best and listen.
He listened to the soft sea waves outside of him, and if he listened really closely he could hear the silent snores of some of the ships crew, that were sleeping above him.
He could hear Sirius’ steady breathing, which brought him comfort, and tried to match his breathing to his.
Soon Regulus found his eyes become very heavy, and for the fist time in a while he felt tiered.
He woke up to the sound of pots clattering. Someone else was awake and in the kitchen. It was the guy from before.
That’s what Regulus was mentally referring to him as now, because if starts to think about his real name or anything about him, Regulus feels as though he might explode, and he hated it.
Regulus watched as the guy, chopped vegetables and added them to a pot. He studied his gorgeous hands, that seemed as if the had been made by some sort of Greek god. He watched as the guy sliced each carrot with such precision, making sure all the vegetables were the right size.
Regulus could have watched his hands forever, correction he could have watch the guy forever. He’s like this bright light in the centre of a room that you can’t ignore, it’s always dancing in front of you no matter what.
“I know you’re awake.” The guy said, still chopping vegetables with his back turned to him.
‘Shit’ Regulus thought. He remained quiet hoping the guy would just move on.
“Your breathing changed from a steady, sleepy pace to a slightly more awake one.” The guy said, now dishing whatever was in the pot into two bowls, and before Regulus knew it the guy was making his way over to the cell. “Here, have this, it helps with the sickness.”
The guy slid one of the two bowls through one of the gaps in the cell, and Regulus stared at it.
“I promise it’s not poisoned if that’s what you’re worried about.” Regulus knew the soup wasn’t poisoned but he still gave it a funny look. “Trust me it helps a lot when you’re sick.”
“How do you know I was sick?” Regulus said finally breaking his own silence.
“We’ll considering I heard very violent vomiting noise’s coming from down here, and there is sick all over the floor, and your the only one awake, I thought I might as well take a wild guess and say you were feeling as shitty as me.” The guy said smiling this golden smile at Regulus.
How dare he make regulus feel like this, how dare he make Regulus feel happy in such a terrible situation.
The guy picked up his own bowl and started eating his soup, almost as if he was trying to tell Regulus with his mind that if he didn’t eat the soup, he would force feed him it himself.
“Would it make you feel better if I told you what’s in the soup, because it my mums homemade recipe-“ the guy continued, almost like he was desperately trying to either fill in the silence or convince regulus to eat the soup.
“I’d rather we didn’t talk about mothers, considering you just tried to kill mine.” Regulus said coldly with an edge in his voice.
“Well she’s been trying to kill me for a long time, so I think the feelings mutual.” The guy said, in a very calm voice, not at all effected by how Regulus just snapped at him. “I don’t really know you at all, but I know a good person when I see one, and trust me when I say that your mother is not a good person. Even though your mother has done terrible things to me and my family, it doesn’t mean I hold it against you, which means you shouldn’t hold this whole ‘keeping you captive’ thing against me.” The guy looked at him sincerely, and Regulus felt calm all of a sudden. The only person who made Regulus feel like this was Sirius, so it felt odd for someone else to make him feel at ease.
As for the whole situation with his mother, it wasn’t that Regulus didn’t know his mother was a bad person, she’s possibly one of the worst people to walk the face of earth. But it’s hard to fully hate someone who raised you. Regulus hates himself sometimes because he knows he shouldn’t care for his mother, I mean she never showed her love for him or took any notice of him, unless she was hitting him of course. But somewhere deep down he, knows he does care for his mother, he doesn’t know why, but Sirius understands it as well.
The guy stood up looking a little deflated and he was just about to head to the door. Something about him didn’t seem right though, it was as if his light was fading, and Regulus hates to think he done that.
He is grateful, this is the nicest anyone has ever been to him, apart from Sirius. He did not trust this guy, but to be fair Regulus doesn’t trust anyone, but he couldn’t let someone who shines as bright as the sun, be dimmed.
“Thanks for the soup.” Regulus said simply. The guy turns around, and Regulus offers him a tight smile.
The guy seems to take this as a win, and smiles back.
“My name is James by the way.”
“I know,” Regulus says, and to that James looks at Regulus with a smirk on his face. “No- it’s just- you know they were saying your name a lot when we were all on the top deck.” Regulus said with a blush creeping up on him. God he hated this feeling.
“Oh of course,” James said properly grinning at him now. “You know, this is normally the part where you tell me your name.”
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
“Because you’ll laugh.”
“Listen I will mentally prepare myself for your stupid posh name, and I swear if I so much as smirk, you have full permission to make fun of my middle name.” James said beaming at Regulus, and despite his mind telling him not to he smiled back a little.
“Ok, it Regulus.”
To that James let out a snort, which then turned into the most horrendous laugh ever, it was like a mix of a boiling kettle and a dying chicken.
“You said you wouldn’t laugh you prick, well jokes on you cause now you need to tell me you middle name.” Regulus said crossing his arms.
“Alright, but bare in mind this also my dads name. Ok, it ummmm, Fleamont.”
Despite himself regulus let out an embarrassing giggle, and James just started laughing even more.
“That’s quite unfortunate.” Regulus said in wheezes.
“Says you, Regulus.” James gives him one last golden grin before turning towards the door. “Alright then good night Reggie.” And with that James was out the door before Regulus could even process the nickname.
Regulus’ had a weird feeling coming over him, it was almost like he was giddy.
Merlin Regulus felt sick just thinking that.
He glanced down at the bowl of soup and decided to eat it. He thought he should maybe save some for Sirius, but when he look over at Sirius, he was sleeping away. Regulus was quite concerned that he didn’t wake up because of James atrocious laugh, but at the same time he was happy he didn’t because Regulus wanted to keep this moment between him and James to himself.
Merlin, Regulus was utterly fucked.
