part 1
It was a busy day for the headmaster of Hogwarts. Despite his best efforts Sirius Black had managed to escape Azkaban. The old man still remembered when Black and Potter walked these halls, pulling pranks on his staff. The two boys seemed near impossible to separate during their school years, in fact quite often they were mistaken for brothers with both of them having black hair and essentially the same personality.
While many compared their antics to those of the Weasley twins, Dumbledore often saw them in Harry Potter and his best friend Ronald Weasley, their ability to get into trouble rivalled only the Black and Potter duo from years earlier. The young Potter was a spitting image of his father except for his eyes which were distinctly his mothers, and while Ronald didn’t look anything like Black their action towards their respective Potter’s were quite similar, even the fact that they have another close friend who seemed to care about their school work more than adventure was the same. For the Marauders it was one Remus Lupin and for the so called ‘Golden Trio’ it was Hermione Granger. This idea worried the old man as he didn’t want the young Weasley to follow in the footsteps of Sirius Black and betray his friends.
Now there’s the chance that Black is after young Harry. Dumbledore lay back in his chair, he decided to ignore his fears and focus on the upcoming school year. Starting with who would take over the Defence Against the Dark Arts job, the last two haven’t been the best choices, that's something not even Dumbledore could deny. He thought back to the Marauders and the roles each one had, when an idea struck him, the only one in their group who actually bothered to learn anything throughout his junior years, Remus. Dumbledore wrote a letter to Lupin asking him to teach, throwing in a safe place to live and new clothes into the deal to make sure Remus agreed. The Headmaster thought he was being extra clever by employing one of Black and Potter’s old friends, hoping that if Harry’s life was in danger Lupin would give more information up. He gave the letter to the owl at his window and sent her off.
Now that that problem was fixed, Dumbledore could focus on getting more protection around Harry. The boy had a knack for finding trouble and with his godfather out to kill him Dumbledore couldn’t let him go on his heroic campaigns like previous years, not that he approved of them back then either. The old man decided that it was about time he pulled out a favor from one of his old friends. He quickly wrote a letter and walked over to his phoenix.
“Hello fawkes I know this may be a long journey but I wouldn’t ask you unless I absolutely needed this.”
Fawkes squawked in response
“Thank you friend, I need you to deliver this to Alan Deaton in Beacon Hills”
…
I was riding past Big Ben on my motorcycle, why was I in London? Well with how everything had been recently I decided that I needed a small break from saving Beacon Hills and being the true Alpha. I hadn’t visited the overseas pack members in years so I thought it was about time to visit. I was now on the final leg of my trip, I’ve visited Cora in South America, Kira who after her stint with the Skinwalkers moved to Japan with her parents, Issac in France who had just recently took up a teaching position at some private school, and that led me to here in london to visit Jackson and Ethan, who just got married to each other.
Stiles and Lydia were both still back home in America, Stiles was still working at the FBI, and Lydia became the youngest person to become a Harvard Professor, and we were all just waiting for one of them to propose to the other. Malia and I dated for a while but both agreed to end things, now she roams the streets looking for lost werewolves to find them homes. Deaton still owned his clinic though these days I was usually the one in charge. Liam was now playing lacrosse at university level, while Mason enrolled in the police academy and now works under sheriff Stilinski. Derek eventually decided to just become a stay at home dad for his son Eli.
I arrived at my hotel, and stepped into the elevator. Luckily there was no music to listen to, because I was staying on the top floor. I walked through my floor until I arrived at my door. I went through my jacket to find my key when I heard chatter from inside my room. I narrow my eyes and open the door. I let my body shift into its werewolf form and entered the room with my red red illuminating the path.
“Ah Scott, I was wondering when you would arrive.”
“Wait Dr. Deaton? What are you doing here?”
There were two people in my room, one was my ageing mentor Dr. Alan Deaton and the other was an older man whose beard almost reached the floor. The old man sat down in his chair with a cup of tea in hand. I let my werewolf form drop, based on the lack of reaction from Deaton’s friend, I assumed that he knew about the supernatural.
“I’m here to talk to you Scott, about a certain job opportunity that has arisen.” Deaton said.
“What do you mean Doc?”
“He means I would like you to teach at my school.” the old man claimed “My name is Albus Dumbledore, and I’m the headmaster at Hogwarts, school for witchcraft and wizardry.”
“Magic, why am I not surprised?”
“Probably due to Human sacrifices, Nogitsunes, Alpha packs, Nazis, and Kanimas” Deaton ever so helpfully added.
“Deaton, are you sure you’re fine with this?”
“If you’re worried about my ability to run the vet clinic, I’ve ran it since before you were born. I can do a few more years, and besides Eli has now started to help me out.”
“Ok, but before I agree, could you answer a few questions?”
“Of course my boy.”
“What subject would I be teaching, and why me?”
“Ah. Yes those are the only two questions that matter aren’t they? You would be teaching care of magical creatures alongside our gamekeeper Hagrid, as for why you. There is a crazed murderer on the loose and I would prefer it if the True Alpha was there to protect them.”
I ran the options through in my head but I knew that if there was a chance to stop kids getting hurt, I had to take it.
“Ok I’m in, but the only problem is that I don’t have any magic.”
“I wouldn’t be so sure about that, once you became the True Alpha a special power awakened in you. It gave you the ability to perform magic, albeit weak magic.” my mentor claimed.
“And I’ll be able to teach you the basic spells before the students start, and you will only be teaching the theory side of the subject, the practical side of the subject will be taught by the gamekeeper Hagrid.” my new boss stated
“Now that you mention it I don’t know when the school starts or where it is?”
“School starts on the first of September and you will take the train to the school just arrive at platform 9¾ kings cross station by 11 am.”
To my knowledge there wasn’t a platform 9¾ at kings cross station but I just chalked it up to the wizards and witches being weird.
“Now if you would like to come with me I need some assistance with convincing another Professor.”
Dumbledore offered his hand, I took a look at Deaton who just nodded, reaching out, I grasped his hand. My body suddenly gets twisted and stretched. My insides became my outsides as my body was thrown about, and just as quickly as it started, it ended.
I was sprawled along the floor trying to keep in my lunch, I looked up and saw Dumbledore completely unaffected by the experience.
“That was apparition my friend, in time you will learn to tolerate the experience.”
I couldn’t respond, since if I did I was worried I might vomit. I turned to my surroundings for support. There was a large lake, it had small waves crashing on the shore in a harmonic rhythm. Despite not being able to see it, I could hear a waterfall crashing into the lake. On the hill there was a run down shack which seemed to be lit by candlelight. A strong scent filled my nose, and while I didn’t know who the scent belonged to, there was one thing I was certain of, whoever this person is, they were a werewolf.
“Now I should tell you why I wanted you to come with me.”
“Is it because they’re a werewolf?”
“Ah I should’ve guessed that you would have been able to smell that. Alas there is still one thing I haven’t told you about him. Magical werewolves are different to your werewolves, there are no alphas, betas or omegas, and they only shift on the full moon. They also don’t have enhanced abilities when in human form.”
At that he knocked on the door to the shack. I heard footsteps start to come closer to the door, I could practically smell the anxiety flowing off him. The door opened and a man who fit the run down theme of the shack he lived in walked out. His short brown hair was scattered over his head, and his clothes were worn out and tattered, his hands were covered in dirt. I felt his anxiety dissipate when he saw Dumbledore.
“Dumbledore, I thought I told you, I don’t want to risk any of the students' lives by teaching.” the worn out man exasperated
“Ah I was hoping that you may have changed your mind Remus, so I took it upon myself to bring along one of your colleagues if you were to join. Now if you don’t mind I would use your loo. I’m afraid apparating here has upset my bowel movements.”
“Of course it’s just down the hall.”
With a quick thank you Dumbledore disappeared down the hall. I stole a quick glance at the room, there was an unfinished bar or chocolate lying on the table next to a photo of a newly married couple, the groom had black hair and looked very fit, while the bride had flaming red hair with green eyes. I look back at him and offer my hand which he takes.
“Nice to meet you. I'm Scott McCall, I’m the new care of magical creatures teacher.”
“Remus Lupin, I assume Dumbledore has told you of my condition?”
“If you’re talking about being a werewolf then yes.”
“Is this some type of joke? The care of magical creatures teacher, here to help Dumbledore take in a monster.”
“You’re not a monster, you’re a werewolf, like me.”
At that I let my werewolf form take over, revealing what I was. His eyes widened in recognition.
“How?”
“How am I a werewolf? I was bitten as a teenager.”
“No, how could you risk being around students, you could lash out and hurt them. How do you not fear that?”
“Quite often that’s all it is, a fear. Something that your mind creates”
Remus just nods in understanding. At that moment Albus walked back into the room.
“Well Scott I suppose we must be off, I can tell a lost cause when I see one.”
“WAIT. Fine, I'll teach Defense.”
“That’s the response I was hoping for, I’ll see you on the first.”
With that Dumbledore grabbed my arm and my body was thrown through a loop again. Once it stopped I realised that I was in some sort of Inn. I also noticed that the trip wasn’t as bad this time. Dumbledore didn’t stop though, he walked through a back door and I followed him through.
The door led to a brick wall, then when Dumbledore pressed his wand on the wall, the bricks parted, and inside was the most magical place I had ever seen, there were shops lined with cauldrons and brooms, and we passed stores that held textbooks and robes.
“Welcome to Diagon Alley”
I saw families hanging out eating ice cream, eventually we arrived at a large marble building. I walked through the doors with Dumbledore, I noticed the room was filled with goblins, I was so enamoured by the building and goblins, that I hadn’t noticed that Dumbledore had been talking to one of the goblins.
“McCall, come on.”
I quickly followed them down a passageway into a cave-like area which held a set of tracks with a minecart on top of them. We got into the minecart and the contraption sped off. After all of the apparition that we had done today my body found this easy to deal with. I saw flashes of fire and scales behind one of the passageways we flew by.
“Albus, are there dragons in here?”
“Yes though I’ve only heard rumours on what they’re guarding.”
Eventually we stopped at a large grand vault, Dumbledore handed the goblin the key upon request and the goblin placed the key in the keyhole and turned it. The vault door opened and chambers of golden, silver, and bronze coins filled my eyes.
“This is the Hogwarts vault, you can take as much money as you need, though today you will only need 20 Galleons.”
I stared at mounds of coins trying to figure out which ones were the Galleons.
“Ah those would be the gold ones.”
I grab about 20 of the golden coins. Albus led me back out of the bank and into Diagon Alley. We continued down the street and passed a group of teenagers, they were all wearing green clothes. We stopped at a shop that had an old sign out the front that read, ‘Ollivanders, makers of fine wands since 382 BC.’ as we opened the door a small bell rang above us alerting the shop owner to our presence.
“Ah, Mr McCall, I was wondering when I would be seeing you here.”
An old weary man walked over to Dumbledore and I, his hardened hands had blisters all over them but he shook my hand with great enthusiasm. His white hair was all over the place like he was a crazed scientist. I assumed that he was Ollivander
“How do you know my name?”
“I always keep one ear out for the supernatural. Now which arm is your wand arm?”
“I’m right handed if that’s what you’re asking.”
A measuring tape flew out of nowhere and started to take my measurements. Ollivander walked into the back of his shop and started to look through boxes, he looked over hundreds of boxes before settling on three.
“Try this one Mr McCall, it’s apple wood with a dragon heartstring core, 9 and a half inches and quite springy.”
I picked it up and instantly a vase broke. Ollivander quickly snatched it out of my hands and went to his next wand.
“No no no, that’s not it. Try a fir wood with a phoenix core, 14 and a half inches and a Pliant flexibility.” Ollivander spoke
This time when I picked it up, nothing happened, there was no warmth, nothing broke, it was just there, as if it was just a stick. After a minute of waiting Ollivander took this one away too.
“What are we looking for Sir, why can’t we just take one?” I asked
“The wand chooses the wizard, Mr McCall.” Ollivander claimed almost immediately, like he had been asked this question a million times, “Why? We may never know. Perhaps try Alder wood with a unicorn hair core, 12 inches, and bendy.”
This time when I grasped it a warmth filled my body, it made me feel more alive than ever. It was like I had a missing part of me return.
“Ah yes, I should have known. This particular wand combination is fiercely loyal and is almost impossible to turn to the dark arts. That will be 7 Galleons.”
I handed over the money and left the shop with my wand in my pocket. Albus then took me to get robes, this cost another 5 Galleons. Eventually we went back to the Inn. We talked to the owner and got me a room for the night. I took the key from the man and walked up to my room. I placed all of the things I had bought down on the desk and collapsed on the bed. Within seconds I fell to sleep.
