Chapter 2
“I believe I missed the part of this agreement that included me coming with you,” I groaned, shifting between the two large Aurors I was pressed between.
Gawain smiled and adjusted his robes, “Your reputation is, somewhat questionable, Mr. Malfoy. I need some validity in your statements before I lose any good Aurors in this pursuit.”
Gawain called the vehicle we sat in a van. I was shoved in through the back doors and seated along one of the long benches. Two men are packed in here like sardines on my side of this van, yet Gawain’s was occupied by only him. The damn thing was ancient. Every bump in the road had my head bouncing between the shoulders of large Aurors on either side of me. “And we’re taking muggle vehicles now?”
“We work more covertly when assessing high-risk targets. if what you say is true. We need surveillance on these individuals as soon as possible. Potter and Weasley have been on Theodore Nott’s trail for months now with no prospects,” Gawain gripped a strap hanging from the ceiling. I would do the same if I had access to my arms.
“We shouldn’t be too far out now, you’ll have an enchantment on you. To avoid Mr. Nott or unauthorized Aurors from spotting you. The last thing we need is-'' he started.
“For the Aurors to find out you’re working with a Death Eater.” I finished.
Gawain nodded, the van came to a sharp halt, thankfully the Auror to my right stopped me from slamming into the wall.
I pulled my wand from the sleeve of my jacket, swishing it over my head, and I felt a warm sensation melt from the tip of my head; down my body.
Out of the corner of my eye, I could see the tips of my hair darken and curl upward. I wasn’t sure what else changed, but the curt nod from Gawain hinted that this would suffice.
The doors at the rear thrust open and another man steps into view, this must have been the driver. I have half a mind to reem him for his lack of courtesy for the passengers.
He helps Gawain and me out of the van, and the other two pull their hands away from the driver and hop down.
“Thank you Morrigan,” the Head Auror nods to him before walking ahead.
I follow quickly, “You will have to avoid the front gate. He’s got a modified caterwauling charm on it, he’ll know the instant that gate is touched.”
Theo had become paranoid about the Aurors finding him. He hadn’t done much in terms of Death Eater business, but he knew he would fold like paper if he was caught. I felt a dull pain enter my chest. Theo was my friend. We had the same shitty father card dealt to us. I guess you could say we bonded over it. I was so quick to rat him out for my own needs. Maybe that does make me a Death Eater.
A secondary car pulls up behind the van. I watch as a familiar redhead and a spectacled man step out of the car.
“Potter, Weasley, just in time. I’ve brought my newest intern along as well. I hope you don’t mind,” Gawain gestured to me.
“Not a bit Robards, hopefully, this doesn’t scare the bloke away,” Ron nudges my arm and laughs.
Gawain chuckles, “I’m sure he’ll be fine. Let us proceed. My sources have alerted me to an alarm system Mr. Nott has created for himself, so avoid any typical entrances. Specifically the front gate. If Mr. Nott should make an appearance, do not engage. We are here to set up surveillance only and determine if Mr. Nott is a necessary target.”
Potter and Weasley both nod and sneak off around the back of Theo’s townhome.
A few minutes pass, and Gawain and myself move to a nearby bench, passing for a gentleman and his son sitting. Not sure how believable that is, my father would have never just sat on a bench with me. Maybe it’s a muggle thing.
The air is still, with no wind, no movement, and not a single sound. It wasn’t until I saw a familiar blue glow fill the windows of the house, that I knew we were right fucked.
