Chapter 9

It happened suddenly:

Harry Potter, the-boy-who-lived, was furious about what he had been told and what being forced to do, but he wasn’t sure if there was anything he could do to stop it.

Harry had just come from a meeting with Dumbledore, who had told Harry about the marriage contract he had signed for him. Molly Weasley had signed for her daughter Ginny and Dumbledore signed for Harry since he was Harry’s magical guardian. It was legal and magically binding. There was nothing Harry could do to get out of it.

‘No, there has to be some way out of this. Sirius might know, but this wedding is supposed to happen tomorrow. I won’t get time to send Sirius a letter and for him to respond. I bet that’s why the old man told me so late, so I couldn’t get help from someone like Sirius,’ Harry paced the empty dorm room. After he was told about the marriage, Harry decided to skive off classes. He had too much on his mind and none of it was good.

‘It seems no matter what, people want to control my life. I wish Ginny would drop dead then I wouldn’t be forced to marry her. Add others to that. Snape should just drop dead along with Albus bloody Dumbledore and Molly Weasley.’

He had grown to dislike Ginny because she kept staring at him all the time. Lately she had begun to sit with him, Hermione and Ron. It seems she befriended Hermione to get close to Harry. When he had been at the Burrow, Molly Weasley would make sure Harry was always where Ginny was. She even made sure Ginny sat beside him during meals. At Hogwarts Harry always made sure he had someone on both sides, if it was possible. Hermione usually sat beside him, or Ron, so Harry would try to get Neville or someone else to sit on the other side. Didn’t always work.

Whenever Ginny tried to talk to Harry, he would ignore her, at first. Usually Hermione or Ron would ask why he wasn’t answering Ginny, which meant he would have to answer the red headed girl. He made sure he said the least amount to her, short answers and he made sure he didn’t sound friendly, nor did he smile. He would then turn away and ignore her again. He sometimes made sure he sounded cold and gave her a look of loathing. Now he knew she had been told about this marriage, which was why she had begun to join him when he was with Hermione and Ron.

Harry went down to the common room. There were a few students in there. Older students who didn’t have classes. The twins were in there, they saw Harry come down the stairs from the boys dorm room. They gave him a wave; all Harry could do was nod before sitting on the large squishy armchair.

When it got close to dinner, Harry didn’t bother looking around as he entered the great hall. He just sat down then stared down at the empty plate. If Harry had bothered to look around, he would have noticed that the headmaster, the potions teacher and a student were missing from the great hall. He ended up having a small amount to eat, he just didn’t have an appetite.

When Harry went to his trunk later that night, he was going to shower now in case he might not have time in the morning. If he had to sneak away, he might not find somewhere to stay straight away. As he picked up his bathroom bag, he saw the package Sirius had given him before leaving Grimmauld place. He had completely forgotten about that. He never planned to open it in case Sirius did something reckless. But Harry wanted to speak to his godfather about this problem and Sirius did say it was a way for them to keep in contact.

Harry sat on his bed, with the curtains closed then unwrapped the package. It was a mirror. There was a note.

“Speak my name and tap the mirror with your wand. I have the mate to this mirror. We will be able to talk to each other any time. The mirror you have belonged to your father. I will always be here for you. Love Padfoot.”

Harry grinned, ‘Sirius Black,’ Harry whispered then tapped the mirror with his wand.

‘About time you used it. What took you so long?’

‘At first I didn’t want to use something that could get you found. I put it in my trunk and sorry, I forgot about it. I wasn’t going to risk your soul or freedom, or your life.’

‘I get it pup. So why did you decide to use it?’

‘A damn big problem. The stupid old man signed a marriage contract for me. I have to marry Ginny Weasley and I hate her. The wedding is tomorrow.’

‘He can’t be your guardian, magic would not allow it. Your parent’s named me godfather, which is magically binding. I am the only person who can legally and magically sign things like marriage contracts. It won’t happen. I hate them and your mother did as well. She made me promise to never sign one if anything happened to them and I ended up raising you. I explained to her how my family used them which was another reason I left home and left the family. I refused to be involved with those types of things.’

‘But you were sent to Azkaban Sirius. He told me he was able to get legal custody in the magical world because I was the-boy-who-lived and I needed powerful protection.’

‘Doesn’t matter. Magic will not recognise him because I was never given a trial and found guilty, which means he lied. If you say no to this marriage, then they can’t force it and you will not lose your magic, or life. Trust me pup, I grew up learning about these things. But when we did the naming ceremony so I would become your godfather, you and I glowed the same colour. It means magic recognised me and only me as your legal godfather and guardian if anything happened to your parents. If for any reason I broke the bond then we’d both glow again before it would vanish. That never happened and we both instantly felt something for the other after you helped rescue me. The bond is still intact.’

Harry sagged, ‘Thanks Sirius. I thought I could sneak out tonight and get a lot of my money out then hide in the muggle world. But I knew Dumbledore would never allow me to actually have my magic bound so I figured he would work something out. I thought of going so far as using the-boy-who-lived and get everyone to know what the old man was going to force me to do. I know it would have caused problems with Ron, but after that fight we had when my name came out of the goblet of fire, I really don’t care if I upset him or the rest of the Weasley’s. No one will force me into a loveless marriage.’

‘They won’t, but you are right, with Voldemort back, Dumbledore won’t want to lose you. You are the-boy-who-lived and you’re the reason why we’ve had fourteen years of peace. If you want to leave, even for a while, come straight here. I’ll change the wards and remove the fidelius charm.’

‘Can you do that when you’re not secret keeper?’

‘Since I own the property, yes, I can, but only I can as the owner. I will put up some of the darker wards all the Blacks used.’

‘Okay, if for any reason they find some way around it, I’ll use the excuse that I have to change. I figured if I just remain in my pyjamas tomorrow. They will leave the room while I change, or I’ll make them by not changing until I’m alone. I’ll fly out the window. I won’t be able to take my trunk but I can pack some things in my backpack.’

‘I’ll teach you the undetectable expansion charm and feather light charm. You can pack everything in your bag. Just leave your trunk. Use a sticking charm on your cloak and leave it on while you fly. That’s mainly so no muggles see you. Make sure you sit on it. But I believe you’re right, you should leave tonight. Leave a note for the old man and explain you would rather be a muggle than married to a dragon like her. Make them believe that you were willing to give up magic and you left because of what they were trying to force you into this marriage.’

Harry was relieved, he had his godfather’s guarantee he won’t have to marry and still keep his magic. He also had somewhere to go. Maybe it was time he and Sirius left the country. If the old man could try to marry him to someone he hated and Sirius was still thought of as a criminal, maybe this world wasn’t worth helping. He would leave a letter for Hermione and try to convince her to leave Hogwarts, the leave the country with her parent’s. Even though Harry knew Hermione would support Dumbledore and she liked Ginny, he didn’t want her to die. She would be in a lot of danger, for one reason, she was friends with Harry and another reason, she was a muggleborn. Hedwig would take the letter to Hermione now before she went to sleep. He would get her to tell Colin and Dennis. Those two muggleborn boys were also in danger from death eaters, not to mention, Umbridge and Fudge. Harry finally told Sirius he was going to leave tonight. No one will realise until he was long gone.

Sirius began to explain to Harry how to charm his bag and he wasn’t surprised when Harry got it first go. Both charms were done. He told Harry that while he was waiting for his godson to turn up, he would work on the wards. He said that when Harry got to the park across the street, then send his patronus into the house. They didn’t want to waste time now, but Sirius could teach Harry how to make his patron us talk, but the charm was involved. All Sirius needed was to see Prongs and know Harry was waiting.

He began to write his letter to the old man that tried to manipulate him. He also wrote that as chief warlock he didn’t even try to get Sirius a trial, yet he got his pet death eater out of Azkaban. He decided he wasn’t going to help anyone, especially not with Voldemort. Once that was done, he began to pack his bag with the things he wanted to keep. He wouldn’t worry about most of the books. He would keep the books from fourth year and he would keep this years books. He would get new clothes, but for now he would pack his old stuff, along with his robes. His invisibility cloak would be on him. Once he had everything ready, he woke Hedwig up and told her he was leaving and to meet up with him after taking the letter to Hermione. Once his owl had flown out the window, Harry left the letter on his bed, but address it to the Dark Lord Dumbledore. He pulled the curtains around his bed so no one would see it until they tried to find Harry.

Harry put his invisibility cloak over himself. He then cast a basic sticking charm on it. He sat on his broom, cast a disillusionment charm on the broom so no one could see it, then slowly maneuvered out the window. He closed the window, the instantly accelerated away from Hogwarts and away from people trying to control his life.

Harry was exhausted by the time he got to the park across from Grimmauld place. He ate the last of the chocolate he had before he began to think of a happy memory. The memory he chose was of him and Sirius leaving the country and leaving people like Fudge and Umbridge to Voldemort. Prongs leapt forth and Harry directed him towards the house. He saw Prongs disappear and knew Sirius would be out straight away. Normally he could just enter the house since he had been given the secret before he returned to Hogwarts. But with Sirius changing the wards to dangerous wards, this was the only way.

Sirius appeared and hurried towards Harry as he hurried towards Sirius. Sirius cast the final charm, then he handed Harry the note then they both hurried inside.

‘Did anyone see you leave?’

‘No, the dorm room was empty. I did send Hedwig to Hermione with a note saying I’m leaving and she should think about leaving too. But I wrote that she should tell the Creevey boys to leave.’

‘Do you think she will leave?’

‘Yes, she knows her parent’s will be in danger. Dumbledore wouldn’t’ care about them so he wouldn’t have the order guarding them. She might stay but she will find a way to make her parent’s move. I hope she does and doesn’t believe the old man will keep them safe, when we know he won’t.’

‘No, they would not be high on his list.’

‘What if he or someone from the order tries to come here, what will happen?’

‘First is they will be painfully ejected from the fireplace if they try to floo in. As you had to read my new note, they can’t just come here as they wouldn’t remember. I waited until the last minute to cast that so you would remember where to go. As soon as I saw you outside, I finished the charm which is why I handed you the new note.’

‘Okay, but now I’m away, you know he’ll do anything to get me back. He might even find some way to get you arrested. He has friends in the ministry, one might be an unspeakable who knows how to get through the fidelius charm.’

‘No one can Harry. It was originally invented by an unspeakable. They wanted a way to guarantee people’s safety that no one could break. But we’re not staying here for long so we don’t have to worry. We’ll need a few days to make some plans and to get a few things to help us when we leave.’

‘Okay, I feel better now I know we’re leaving. No one bothered to help you or me, so why should we help them? Apart from asking Hermione to talk to the Creevey boys, I don’t really know the others.’

‘Since you’ve explained about Umbridge, she would have targeted them already so they know what their lives will be like if they stay. I’m sure they will realise but Hermione is smart enough, hopefully she will be able to talk to them so they can get away. For now, let’s have a beer and we can talk over some ideas.’

Neither Harry nor Sirius knew that Remus had tried to find Sirius. All the order of the phoenix realised they had no idea where headquarters were. They needed a meeting and quickly. Minerva finally had them floo into her office. She explained that Albus and Severus died, before she told them about Ginny Weasley died as well. The Weasley boys had been sent home the moment Minerva found out about Ginny. She had worked out that the girl died at the same time as Albus and Severus. When Minerva had contacted Arthur, he had only just arrived home from the ministry. He didn’t find out his wife had also died until he went looking for her to explain to his wife that their daughter was dead.

Remus finally sent a letter to Sirius first to explain what happened, second, to find out why he changed the fidelius charm. Sirius would not get that letter until the morning, when he came downstairs to see an owl asleep using one of the chairs as a stand. The new charms he did prevented owls from tapping on the windows. They had to come in the small window in the laundry to deliver mail and remain in the kitchen until someone took the letter. Hedwig had the run of the house so once she entered, she could go anywhere. Neither Sirius or Harry wanted to be woken with an owl tapping on the window. Sirius also didn’t want to take the chance that a charmed letter could be sent to Harry by the old man. The owl might still arrive with a charmed letter, but Sirius could check it before Harry touched it.

By the time Harry stumbled sleepily downstairs, he saw Sirius sitting at the table, with a cup of coffee in his hand and some parchment in front of him. Harry just went and made himself a cup of tea before sitting down.

‘Remus sent this. He realised I changed the fidelius charm when he couldn’t remember where the house was. An emergency order meeting was called last night. It seems Albus, Severus and Ginny all died, at the same time.’

‘What!!!!!!!? How?’

‘They don’t know. There’s not a mark on them.’

‘So, it must be the killing curse, unless it’s something like poison. I might hate Snape but he does know potions. There’s no way he could be poisoned unless he trusted the person who gave it to him.’

‘There is one more way that could have caused this. I’m not sure because of Albus. The other two, yes, but not Albus, as far as I know.’

‘Don’t you start going all Dumbledore on me Sirius, just tell me.’

‘Life debts.’

‘I don’t know what you mean. Apart from the fact the wizarding world has life debts, I don’t know anything about them.’

‘Since you were basically muggle raised, no, you wouldn’t know about this. Do you know that Ginny owed you a life debt?’

‘No, I know Snape does because of dad. The old man didn’t tell me more just that he owed me one. I know the rat owes me one. The old man told me that as well, but I don’t get how it would help.’

‘Life debts are magically enforced pup. I’m sorry to have to ask this but know it won’t change anything. It will just mean you and I will have to leave sooner than I thought.’

‘Sirius,’ Harry growled.

‘Sorry. Okay, did you at any time say and I mean speak the words, you want Albus, Snape or Ginny dead?’

‘Oh shit,’ Harry stared wide eyed at his godfather, ‘Yeah, I was so angry after I found out about this marriage contract.’

‘Try to remember exactly what you said.’

Harry thought back to when he was in the dorm room and what he was thinking and say while he paced the room.

‘I said I wish Ginny would drop dead then I wouldn’t be forced to marry her. Add others to that. Snape should just drop dead along with Albus bloody Dumbledore and Molly Weasley. Does that mean she’s dead as well and I killed them?’

‘Only if they owe you a life debt. I knew about the one Snape owed your dad so I knew it was now yours. I knew about Ginny as you did save her life in the chamber of secrets. The trouble is Albus and now Molly. As far as I know, neither you nor your dad or mum saved Albus. Did you save Molly at all?’

‘No, not that I know of. I mean I’ve been told that I basically saved everyone when Voldemort disappeared. It couldn’t be that as there was a chance I could have died, or some of his death eaters could have continued. There’s also a chance that many could have escaped.’

‘Magic is not always easy to explain pup. Snape did owe your dad a proper life debt. If James didn’t risk his life to save Snape, then it would not be a proper life debt. Moony would have killed James as well as Snape. James wasn’t in his animagus form so Moony would have attacked him. You risked your life for the girl and you were dying and would have died if Fawkes hadn’t saved you with his tears but you did not know the phoenix was going to save you. That night doesn’t count as people could have survived even if Voldemort didn’t disappear. You literally risked your life for the girl, just as James did for Snape. They would not have survived without you or James so they are full on magical life debts. The one with Peter is a bit more confusing though. Yes, Remus and I wanted to kill him and planned to before you stopped us. But we could have, at the last minute, changed our minds, so there is a chance that is not a proper life debt. If this is what caused it, then either you or James, maybe even Lily saved Albus. We don’t know about Molly since we didn’t know her back then. We knew her brothers. But as I said, for all we know James or Lily could have saved her which would pass on to you. Either way, I would rather us be long gone before someone finds us, or figures it out.’

‘If someone finds out Sirius, I’ll be chucked in Azkaban.’

‘That won’t happen. No one apart from the two of us know what you said. But as I mentioned, as far as I know and you know, you, nor your parent’s saved Albus and Molly. Only me, you and Remus knows that James saved Snape. It won’t link to you since Albus and Molly did die at the same time. We’re leaving in a few hours. We just have to work on a way to get to Gringotts to empty our vaults, then we disappear. Normally I would send Kreacher, but I don’t trust him.’

‘So, an owned house elf can go to your vault for you?’

‘Yes. They have to have the key. The goblins will be able to tell if the elf is owned by the owner of the key.’

‘Then Dobby can. He came to me just before Christmas to tell me he could feel himself dying. He found out from one of the older Hogwarts house elves that a free elf will eventually die because they don’t have a magical master. I instantly bonded with Dobby. He saved my life; I wasn’t going to let him die.’

‘Okay, then Dobby can also bond with me as I’m your legal guardian, then he can go to both our vaults. Dobby can also take us to France. First we need to make sure no one recognises us.’

‘Well, there is a lot of muggle ways to disguise us, it’s just that they take time.’

‘We could go to some muggle town but it’s too dangerous in this country. We have to be somewhere that no one will recognise you or me until we can work on some disguises.’

Harry and Sirius continued to make some quick plans before Harry called Dobby. Once the elf had also bonded with Sirius, he went straight to Gringotts, while Sirius worked on adding one more ward before they left the house and left England. Sirius wrote to Remus, he explained that he couldn’t stay any longer. There was no use staying when Fudge listens to death eaters and believes Sirius was a murderer. He wasn’t going to take the chance he could be kissed by a dementor. It was too dangerous for Sirius to remain. He wrote that he was taking Harry with him. He was worried, Harry had been in danger so many times at Hogwarts and even kidnapped from there. He also wrote that he didn’t trust Snape with Harry. It was time he made sure his godson was safe, just as James and Lily would have wanted. Which meant Harry Potter was leaving the world he helped save.

By the time Hermione got home from Hogwarts and explained more about Voldemort to her parents and how the ministry were denying his existence and also how three people inside Hogwarts mysteriously died, her parent’s instantly agreed that they should leave. What Hermione didn’t know was her parent’s had already been making plans to move overseas. Hermione could continue her magical education in another country. At first Hermione said she was going to stay so she could help but her parent’s refused to let her. As she was still underage, she had no say. She was going to be leaving with them. They knew that once Hermione became an adult she could return to England, but they hoped once they were settled and Hermione began her education in another country, their daughter would see sense and stay with them.

While Harry and Sirius were staying in a muggle campground in Canada, they began to talk over their short-term plans and long-term plans.

‘I actually like your idea, pup. Australia is far away from England, on the other side of the world so I doubt anyone back home will spot us. No one from the ministry would bother with a country so far away. If aurors wanted to question us, they can’t just go to another country. They have to get permission and they would have to find us. We’re working on disguises. You’ve got an appointment to get contact lenses, then you’ll have different coloured eyes, I’m the same. We have our fake papers that will pass any muggle test. We just stay out of magical area’s. I can continue to teach you and you can do your newts when you reach seventeen. It didn’t surprise me to find out that only England has restrictions for underage magic. We can find out if Australia is like Canada and find out if they have more subjects than England or if they are the same.’

‘After reading up on Australia, it sounds nice. I started to read up on that country mainly because it’s warmer than England. No death eaters either. Okay, so we know which country we’re heading too. We can work on more plans once we’re there.’

‘We said we want to have a bit of holiday before we settle somewhere. We’re in Canada and we’ve already done some sightseeing. We can go to America next, spend some time seeing that country. Maybe even find out what the magical part of America is like. For all we know they could be like England or like Canada. All we do know about it at the moment is they don’t have underage restrictions on using magic. But we can take our time and basically have a long holiday before we settle in somewhere.’

‘I like taking this time to see things since I never went anywhere before. So, we’ll plan for a longer holiday then head to Australia. You take me by side-along apparition so we don’t need to worry about portkeys.’

‘I’ll begin to teach you apparition once we’re settled.’

No one in England could find out how Albus Dumbledore, Severus Snape, Molly Weasley and Ginny Weasley died, or why they died at the same time. Even though the investigation would continue, they were finally buried. McGonagall had found Harry’s letter that he addressed to Albus. She was first angry with how it was addressed, until she read the contents. She knew right then why Harry Potter, the-boy-who-lived decided to leave the wizarding world. She knew she would have to inform the ministry, but she wouldn’t right away as Fudge would cause more problems for Harry Potter. He might even accuse him of being behind the deaths. There might not be any evidence of Harry doing anything wrong, but Fudge wouldn’t care. She would hate for Fudge to put Harry in Azkaban without a trial, just as Crouch and Bagnold had done to Sirius. Harry had a bad reaction from dementors, he would not survive if he was sent to Azkaban.

It was right after the funeral’s that Voldemort was seen. One thing Voldemort hated, all the muggleborns that had been at Hogwarts had disappeared, along with their families. He had taken over the ministry and Lucius was able to find all the addresses of the muggleborns, or half bloods who had ties to muggles. The death eaters had turned up at those homes only to find them empty. He knew Harry Potter had warned all the muggleborns and half bloods, yet he found out that the boy was also missing.

Voldemort took care of Fudge and his staff, which meant Percy Weasley was also killed. Some were lucky, they were able to escape. Madam Amelia Bones along with most of the aurors and hit wizards escaped. Amelia and a few aurors had been working in secret to secure other places they could hide but also continue to work and they were in contact with the muggle military. The moment Albus Dumbledore had told her what happened to Harry Potter, she knew it would only be a matter of time. All the families of those workers were also now in hiding, in their secret bases. They had also worked on a secret jail. They hoped they could capture death eaters but they were not against killing the death eaters if they had too. They found old bunkers and tunnels under London. A few spells done by the unspeakables in their group and those jails were now secure. No one inside the jail could access their magic. Everyone in the group had been questioned with veritaserum and given a magical oath that they would never betray the group.

When Voldemort finally found out how many people from the ministry escaped, he was furious. He ended up killing some others who worked there. He had almost killed the death eater who had brought him the bad news. It seems controlling the English ministry of magic didn’t get him control of the magical community. He would need to get his supporters to find and bring back anyone that had escaped. He didn’t want them working against him, so they had to join him or they would die.

Voldemort didn’t know it but other countries who were against the dark arts warded their countries. They allowed people in; their wands would automatically disappear and end up in the hands of the aurors. They would then have to be questioned using the truth potion. If they had been innocent and were just trying to survive, they were allowed to stay. Their names were added to the files but those files were not named, they were coded, using numbers. Only four people could access those files.

It was only a couple of weeks before other countries began to capture and either kill death eaters or had them in their jails, if they surrendered. Most tried to fight and lost their lives.

It took two months but Harry and Sirius finally got to Australia and to Wollongong on the south coast of New South Wales. Harry and Sirius decided to continue to live in muggle campgrounds until they worked out if they liked Wollongong. By the look of it, they already knew this town could make a great home. They would stay in their tent until they found a house, one that suited both of them but also one that they both liked.

Even though Sirius and Harry were looking for a home, they would spend a few hours at one of Wollongong’s beautiful beaches. They would house hunt in the morning, stop for lunch but eat lunch at the beach. They would have a swim, shower then back to hunting for the house that they would make into a home.

It didn’t take long for Sirius and Harry to find the perfect home, one that allowed them to sit on their veranda and stare out over the pacific ocean. They both felt the same, they had found the perfect home, they had found somewhere they could both begin a new life.

After breakfast one morning, a week after moving into their home, Harry went outside to sit on the veranda. Sirius came out not long after to see his godson looked like he was doing some serious thinking.

‘Is something on your mind pup?’

‘These marriage contracts got me thinking. What happens to orphan muggleborns or raised?’

‘They are assigned a sort of magical guardian. It’s not like a parent or godparent, or even like a family member. It’s just someone they can correspond with and ask questions about the wizarding world. Usually they themselves are muggleborns, or half bloods who has contact with the muggle world. Most pure bloods never wanted to help since they don’t really want muggleborns there. Is there a reason you asked?’

‘Well, I was just wondering if someone like a muggleborn could be forced to marry someone, like the old man was trying to do to me?’

‘It could happen. There are still marriage contracts, some old families even sign them the moment their child is born. One of my cousins ran away when her father signed one for her. She ended up marrying a muggleborn, who my family hated. I left home at sixteen to get away from them. I ended up living with your grandparent’s. James and I were like brothers and your parent’s knew I wasn’t like my family. But the only way I know that someone could be forced is if they had an official and legal guardian who signed for them. Let’s use Hermione as an example. Say Mad-eye ended up becoming her legal guardian because he felt she would settle into the wizarding world better if she had someone who she could not just write to but someone they can get close to. Hermione is a very smart girl and she has some power as well. As a muggleborn, she will never rise up through the ministry like a half blood or a pure blood would. But if she had someone like Mad-eye as her guardian, she could become minister for magic. This would help her in the long run but it also means Mad-eye could sign a marriage contract with someone like Arthur for one of his sons, let’s say Ron. From what you’ve told me about those two then that marriage would end up with two very unhappy people. It can happen and has in the past. Blood means nothing but the ministry is run by pure-bloods so unless someone like Hermione married into a pure-blood family or was legally taken in by someone like Mad-eye who has a great reputation from when he was an auror, or she is legally taken in by a pure-blood. It would not be a very good life for her. We’re all magical, blood doesn’t define us or prove we’re more powerful than others. But not everyone see’s it that way.’

‘From what I’ve seen so far of this country, it’s not like in England. We found out Canada and America aren’t like England either. I heard of a girl who left after first year, a muggleborn. Her family moved overseas. I don’t know where. I do remember that she was one of the first to get spells in class, like Hermione, me and some others, like Susan Bones. In one class, Susan, Hermione and Sally were the first three, then me before Dean and Justin. Now out of those people, only one was a pure-blood. Four were muggleborns and me, a half-blood. That was out of the whole class. The pure-bloods were the ones who didn’t get the spell until the next class. So, you’re right, blood doesn’t define us at all or define who is powerful and who isn’t. Hermione is ten times more powerful than Ron or people like Draco Malfoy, both pure-bloods.’

‘You would also be one if not the most powerful. Remus explained about the patronus and how long that took. Most six and seventh years have trouble with that spell and some never learn to cast it. I’m sure you were one of the first to get the spells in every wand based class.’

Harry shrugged, ‘I do okay.’

‘Your parent’s were two of the most powerful people at Hogwarts, even over older students. Lily was smart but also scary with how she could work magic. James was a prodigy when it came to transfiguration. You are so much like your parent’s and you get your power from them. I also believe it’s how you survived that night.’

‘What do you mean?’

‘Let’s get comfortable and have a drink, then I’ll explain.’

Harry and Sirius summoned a couple of drinks then both sat on their new large outdoor setting.

‘Okay, I believe that somehow Lily worked on a way for her and James to either give their magic to you or used some type of soul magic, maybe even sent their souls to you. For you to survive the killing curse, it would mean you had more magic than anybody, that or you had more souls. Our magic is connected to our souls so if they did find a way to give you their souls, you would have their magic. Three lots of powerful magic in one body could easily deflect the killing curse. The killing curse would be rebounded off you if they did that. There’s always a chance that the killing curse killed one of the souls but left the other two. I don’t believe that happened. I believe they were able to some way transfer their magic to you.’

‘If that’s true, then why wasn’t I able to deflect the cruciatus curse that he used on me after he returned?’

‘I think your magic was blocked. After we began writing to each other I did a lot of thinking and I spoke with Remus a lot about the year he spent at Hogwarts. You mentioned that during your first few years at Hogwarts, you struggled and I couldn’t work out why especially when you did a lot of magic as a baby. After the graveyard you found magic easy. Every spell I’ve shown you since we’ve left, you could do it, without any problems. It’s like something was blocking you before, but after the graveyard your magic became free. I’ve taught you spells that aurors use and you’ve done them, easily. What I can’t work out was how you’re magic was blocked, why and who did it. All I know is it would not have been your parents.’

‘It would have to be Dumbledore. To block someone’s power you would have to be powerful, very powerful. He was the one that left me on the doorstep of the Dursley’s. He explained some of what happened that night and Hagrid told me more. Hagrid was sent to the house to get me and you explained how you gave Hagrid your bike to take me to safety. Hagrid took me straight to Dumbledore at Privet drive. No one else was near me from what I’ve found out. Hagrid couldn’t have done it and you wouldn’t. You also said my parents wouldn’t so that leaves the old man. But why would he do it when he put me with them for my safety?’

‘I don’t know pup; I can’t work anything out. I get he could have been worried about you using magic where the normal people would see it. But if you somehow had extra protection from your parent’s, then it might have been needed during that time. You mentioned that you had strangers bow to you and smile at you and had no idea why. Death eaters could have found you and they would have killed you without any problems. To get to you would have been easy as well. Once Vernon or Petunia left the house, they could have been imperiused so they would take you to the death eaters. Having the extra power might have stopped that somehow. None of it makes sense. The only other way that might have blocked your magic was due to the trauma you went through that night. First you saw your mother die, then you were hurt from that spell, it cut you so again, you would have been in pain. You were alone for some time, probably crying out for your mum who was on the ground near you, yet she never moved and that would have scared you. I believe it was Dumbledore and only because it could be dangerous if you did magic in front of other muggles. There is just a chance that your magic was blocked due to trauma. There’s no way to get the answers, so I’ve stopped worrying about it. I’m curious, just not that worried anymore.’

‘Since it might have to be Dumbledore and he’s dead, then we’ll never get any answers. If it was trauma, again, we’ll never find out, so we might as well forget about it. We’re also far away from them and in this beautiful country. You also said that since we’ve been here, I’ve been able to do all spells. It could be because the one who cast the blocks on me, died, so the blocks disappeared. That makes a lot of sense. Anyway, I want to put England in the past and leave it there.’

The adult and teenager clinked glasses. This is the start of their new life, so they were going to bury the last fourteen years and hoped it never got brought up again.

Over the following years, Voldemort tried everything to either find the missing witches and wizards, or try to take over other countries. Neither worked. But he was losing some of his death eaters. Every time they went out to find people, someone killed them. There was never any bodies found, just a note saying the evil ones had been taken care of. At other times, a note was found inside the ministry and usually it corresponded with another missing death eater. Voldemort was also furious that the muggle army was now attacking his people. No matter what he tried, he could only ever kill one or two before many of his death eaters were killed.

Voldemort ruled the wizarding community in England, but there was no actual people to rule as they had all left. The only ones still in England were pure-bloods that supported him. Some of his followers did find out that the witches and wizards who escaped went to other countries, where they were now protected and given citizenship of that country. They were told they could take temporary citizenship or permanent citizenship. They could decide properly if Voldemort was taken care of. Voldemort had sent his death eaters to Gringotts. He planned to take control of the vaults of all those that had left. He found every vault empty and the goblins gone. He ended up so angry he killed two death eaters before he got himself under control.

Harry enrolled in normal school, then had Sirius teach him magic every weekend. Sirius did find a spell like the disillusionment charm that would make Harry invisible, but only to non magicals. It was so he could fly his broom without having to worry about any non-magical seeing him. He loved soaring over the ocean and usually he was pushing his Firebolt to its limit. Both Harry and Sirius knew Harry would be okay if he came off, he would land in the water. He could easily summon his broom back to him and once again begin flying. His wand was in a wand holder on his arm so he would have no trouble getting the wand and there was no chance of him losing his wand.

Harry did occasionally write to some of his friends. He and Sirius had agreed to never tell anyone where they were, not even which country they were in. He never used Hedwig to deliver those letters, he used overseas post owls. Hedwig was used a lot for mail orders in the wizarding shops but not to people they kept in contact with.

Harry wrote to Hermione and received a letter from her. He wrote to Neville, who was one of the pure-bloods that decided to leave England. Neville and his gran took Frank and Alice out of St Mungo’s and went to Rome. He did write to the Creevey’s, who ended up in Canada. Colin’s father had an aunt there who helped them out until they could find their own home. Harry wrote one letter to Ron and got a rather scathing letter back. Ron called him a coward who ran away, he didn’t even care that Ginny had died. Harry never wrote another letter to his former friend. He decided the Weasley’s were also now part of his past, so he was going to forget they ever existed.

Harry graduated, then worked on university and what courses he needed. Since he still wasn’t sure what they wanted to do, they just decided to take a year off. He would still learn magic, usually from Sirius. But now Sirius had his own girlfriend and he also marketed the mirrors, Harry knew his godfather didn’t have as much time as he did before. They were both adults now so he just continued to self study when it came to magic.

Harry had been wary of getting close to anyone. He didn’t want anyone in England to find out he was in Australia. He never changed his name as the name Harry and Potter were pretty common names. He did however have plastic surgery done to remove his lightning shaped scar. That would identify him instantly if anyone saw it.

He did finally meet a girl at uni and after a few dates they realised they sort of knew each other. Sally-Anne Perks had been at Hogwarts and was sorted into Hufflepuff right before Harry had been sorted into Gryffindor. She left during the Christmas holidays due to an attack from a few students and the fact that none of the teachers would do anything, nor did they punish the guilty.

It took until they became serious before Sally explained more about the attack. She had been ganged up on by some of the older Slytherin boys. The boys raped her yet none of the teachers or headmaster did anything. Sally had ended up crying into Harry’s arms. When Harry told her what he found out about those four, she finally smiled. Adrian Pucey and his friends had become death eaters, they had been killed not long after Harry and Sirius left England.

Sirius had kept in contact with Remus, even if Remus had no idea where Sirius or Harry was. Remus would write about what he heard, who was still fighting and who died. It seemed that Draco Malfoy had said something to Voldemort that he didn’t like. The blond was tortured for hours before he died. His girlfriend, Pansy and two friends, tried to help him, they were also killed. Sirius would read these letters to Harry so he would know what was going on even if neither of them were involved.

Like Harry and Sirius, Sally could put her terrible past to rest and begin her knew life with Harry especially now she knew the ones that hurt her, were dead.

Harry and Sally went on to become doctors, they wanted to work with children, especially children who had diseases that could kill them, like cancer. Without anyone knowing, Harry and Sally would re-work the medicine the children took by combining them with some of the healing potions in the wizarding world. They knew they had to be careful, so they had a company in their name that used natural remedies. If anyone tested the medicine the children took, they found find all the ingredients came from the company.

Not only did Harry and Sally become known for their work, but also the company was one of the biggest in the world.

It took nearly ten years after Voldemort had returned before the English military killed him and all his supporters. They had been talking to the group led by Amelia Bones. Between both groups, they were finally able to destroy the terrorists known as Lord Voldemort and his death eaters.

It would take years for Amelia to get the ministry up and running again. The first thing she did was send letters to every person who was born in Great Britain so they would know it was safe to return, if they wanted to. She made sure they knew that they didn’t have to, it would be there choice. She just wanted them to know it was now safe but new laws had been brought in so every person would be treated the same.

Two of the aurors who Amelia had been close to found out that Harry Potter had left at the start of his fifth year and they found out that he left with his godfather. They did some investigating and found out that Sirius Black had never been given a trial and the investigation done when he was arrested was poor and spotty. They decided to speak with a few people who would tell them the truth. One was Minerva McGonagall who had been hiding at her old families home. She was now back at Hogwarts and hoped she would be able to open the school again, even if it took a while for the students to return.

Minerva explained everything she knew of Sirius and what she had been told by Albus and Remus, along with Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley. Amelia instantly spoke with Remus who offered his memory. Amelia saw what had taken place in the shrieking shack with Peter Pettigrew. She declared Sirius Black innocent of all charges. Peter, or his rat form had been found amongst the dead death eaters at Malfoy manor. She released a statement in the Daily Prophet about Sirius but also how he ended up in Azkaban in the first place. Remus had sent a letter to Sirius so his old friend would know about his freedom but also about Voldemort and his death eaters. Remus hoped now it was safe that he could find out where his old friend was so he could visit. His main hope would be if Sirius and Harry returned, but he really didn’t believe they would. From the letters Sirius wrote, he and Harry were angry with almost everyone that they had known due to the life both of them had. Most of the blame could be laid at Dumbledore’s feet. He may be dead but Sirius and Harry would never forgive him for his part in their lives since Lames and Lily died.

Remus ended up surprised by the letter he got from Sirius. He was invited to Harry’s wedding and to meet his bride. He would also meet the woman Sirius was now living with. Harry only invited a few from his old life. Hermione who was living in Australia with her parents. Neville was invited along with Luna Lovegood. He also invited the Weasley twins but asked if they could keep quiet about Harry and his upcoming wedding.

Sirius was hosting the wedding in the front garden, Harry and Sally wanted to see the ocean while they married. Harry was upstairs at his old home and would remain there until Sirius came to get him. Harry had to be down first. Sally was in another part of the house with her parents.

Harry smiled as Sirius opened the door, ‘All the guests have arrived and are anxious to see you.’

‘Since I’m ready, I’ll mingle with them until it’s time. Which is how long?’

‘About twenty minutes.’

Harry followed Sirius down the stairs. The moment he stepped outside, he was hugged by Hermione, then it was a group hug. The twins, Neville and Luna were hugging him as well and all Harry could do was laugh.

‘We live in the same country and I never knew, not until I got your invitation. Why didn’t you tell me?’ Hermione asked in a huff.

‘At the time, Sirius and I didn’t want anyone to know where we were. Once we settled in, we just got stuck into our lives. Sirius met Heather and I met Sally. It took me a long time to get over how angry I was. Anyway, you’re here now and about to see me marry my beautiful Sally.’

‘How did you meet?’ Neville asked.

‘At university. We were both studying to become doctors. But after a few dates, we realised we met when we were eleven.’

‘Sally-Anne Perks,’ Hermione said sounding surprised.

‘Yes, her family wanted to move so she left during that first Christmas. You’ll see her soon.’

Harry finally got around to greeting all his guests before Sirius led him to the small archway that was decorated in lilies. When the music began, Harry couldn’t stop smiling as he watched Sally walking towards him on her father’s arm. He got a hug from Albert Perks and Anna Perks before they sat down.

Harry couldn’t tell anyone what was said during the ceremony, he just couldn’t help staring at the woman he loved. Sirius had to basically grab his hand and place the ring in it, which made everyone laugh.

Even though it was their wedding night, Harry and Sally stayed to spend time with their family and friends. They already lived together and had the rest of their lives to go away, they really didn’t need to leave right now. They decided to party with their family and friends.

Sirius knew more than anyone just what Harry had been through from the time his parents had been killed. He couldn’t help smiling now as he watched his godson having fun with old friends he hadn’t seen in years and his new friends he had made once they settled in. Many thoughts crops up into his mind often, the main one was what would have happened if Harry hadn’t called him using the mirror. He knew Ginny and probably Albus would still be dead but would he and Harry have left. Sirius just didn’t know.

Neither Sirius nor Harry ever found out why Albus and Molly died. Neither of them ever told anyone that Lily Potter had saved them from a group of death eaters only a month before she had been killed. Molly always believed that pure-bloods were better than muggleborns, she was ashamed that she had to be saved by one which is the reason she never told anyone that Lily Potter saved her life. Albus had made a mistake when he had been surrounded by death eaters. It was only thanks to Lily that the killing curse missed him. He hadn’t known at the time who had magically summoned him and used a portkey to get away, not until he landed. He looked up to see Lily staring down at him. He never told anyone as he didn’t want Lily, James or anyone else to use the life debt to make him do something he didn’t want to. Both had paid the price when they tried to force Harry to marry Ginny.

Harry was now married to a beautiful and caring woman, one that loved Harry for him and it had nothing to do with the-boy-who-lived. Sirius could tell that this young couple would have a long and loving relationship, with lots of little Potters running around in the future. He would be their Uncle Padfoot, which made him laugh.

Sirius knew that the day Harry called him on the mirror was the best day of his life.
