Beginnings

~June 4th, 1980~

Narcissa and Lucius finally got the chance to rest on the couch after a long day of traveling and running errands in London. The opportunity to cozy up by the fireplace is the only thing on both of their minds, although it’s early June, it’s still chilly some days. The living room was dimly lit by the fire and a few torches that were strung about, the smell of burning oak and sound of the crackling fire brought them a much-needed moment of serenity. Narcissa looked about ready to pop, she’s definitely due to give birth any day now. Lucius looked over at his wife and gently put his hand on her pregnant belly, and said,

“I can’t wait to meet him any day now, I know he will bring honor to the Malfoy name.”

Narcissa pondered this for a moment, the anxious thought she has had for months was finally going to be said out loud,

“Lucius, what if it is not a boy? There’s no way we can completely know for sure…”

Lucius drew in a sharp breath.

“Now Narcissa, we both know that the Malfoy family needs an heir. If it’s a girl, we could always try again, as much of a disgrace it may be. Besides, I just have a feeling we will be meeting our son soon.”

Narcissa got a weird feeling in the pit of her stomach as he said those words, she just had to ask him,

“Lucius, if it is a girl, you wouldn’t —“

Before Narcissa could finish asking her question, a loud knock at the front door interrupted their conversation, who would even be paying the Malfoys a visit at this hour? Lucius groaned in annoyance and got up to answer the door, telling Narcissa to stay where she is. He already knew in his head that he would only open the door to tell whoever was on the other side of it to screw off. As he opened the door he was met by a mysterious woman, something inside him told him he should definitely not shut the door in her face. He said,

“Who are you? Why are you here?”

Lucius looked quizzically at the woman. She was tall, had nearly white skin, long golden-white hair, and the most piercing blue eyes he had ever seen. She almost didn’t look completely human.

“Lucius Malfoy? I need to speak with you and your wife, Narcissa. I have something of the utmost importance to tell you both regarding your children.” The woman spoke with a slight eastern european accent

Children? Plural? Lucius became confused and was at a loss for words, but still somehow found it within him to call Narcissa to the door.

“Narcissa, this woman has something to tell us regarding our children” Placing emphasis on the final word

Narcissa had the same internal reaction as Lucius, looking at him, then at the woman, and finding the courage to say,

“Children? More than one? Who are you and what do you have to tell us?” her words marked with both question and concern.

“My name is Katya, I am a full-blooded veela. I was sent here by one of our elders. And yes, you are having more than one child.”

Veela? Why the hell is a veela here? Before Narcissa could even think more on it she started speaking very quickly,

“Veela? You didn’t answer my question completely, why are you here? We have the right to know what’s going on with our —“

Katya cut her off before she started spiraling, assertively saying,

“Narcissa — one of your children has been chosen to be half-veela. It is an honor and a gift for her to carry on the veela legacy.”

Narcissa and Lucius both stared at the woman, both a bit shell shocked and clearly at a loss for words. They both opened their mouths to say something but nothing came out.

“You will give birth tomorrow, that is all I can tell you for now. Lastly, and I mean this very seriously, do not dispose of the child in any way, you will suffer a fate worse than death if you do. I must be going now, take care.”

The veela quickly apparated away, neither knowing when they would meet again, if ever. Lucius and Narcissa both stood as stiff as boards in the door frame, eventually Narcissa found it within herself to close the front door and pace back to the living room. Lucius was the first to actually say something,

“Wha…why…Veela…there has to be something we can do about this…situation!”

“Do what, Lucius?! You heard what she said, it’s not like we could just kill her and move on like nothing happened!”

“Not kill her, maybe sell her off to a different family, leave her at an unsuspecting muggles doorstep!”

“Absolutely not! There clearly is a reason she has been chosen for this fate in our family, Lucius!” Narcissa’s words were slowly growing more desperate.

“Narcissa, there is absolutely no way we could raise a ~half breed~ in this family! We are pure-bloods! She would be an absolute disgrace to both the Malfoy and Black names!” Lucius was becoming more angry in both his words and body language.

“Yes we can, and we will! We will keep it a secret, teach her to control whatever powers she may develop, no one has to know what she truly is. Treat her however you want Lucius, but we are not getting rid of her.”

With that, Narcissa quickly walked off to the bedroom to sleep. Lucius remained at the couch for a while, holding his head in his hands, still not completely processing what is happening to his family. Eventually he went to join Narcissa to sleep, questions racing back and forth across both of their minds.

~June 5th, 1980~

Narcissa had woken early, not having slept well at all. She reluctantly got out of bed, being careful not to disturb her husband, and had the urge to stress-clean the entire manor. A few hours later, she ventured into the kitchen with the intention to make it spotless, but instead found her husband. He was quietly sipping on a coffee, and by the looks of him, he didn’t get much sleep either. He gently said,

“You should be resting, my dear. Today is going to be a big day.”

Before Narcissa could even reply, a loud pop echoed from the other side of the manor, a familiar voice called out,

“Cissy! Your favorite sister is here for a surprise visit!”

Narcissa dropped everything she was doing and ran towards the voice, finding Bellatrix and embracing her in a hug.

“Bella! I can’t believe you’re here! I’ve missed you so!”

Narcissa wondered why her sister’s “surprise visit” just happened to fall on the day she would give birth to a child who definitely isn’t a pure-blood. If only Bellatrix knew..

“My goodness, you look much farther along since i’ve last seen you — do you have any idea when you’re due?”

“who knows! could be today or a week from now!” Narcissa laughed as she spoke, but knew in the back of her mine that her life would be changing today.

Lucius walked over to the excited sisters, greeted Bellatrix politely, and proceeded to tell Narcissa that she should be resting. Bellatrix interjected, saying,

“Why are you telling her to rest? It’s not like you know when she’s due…”

Bellatrix looked questionably at her sister and brother in law, Lucius quickly replied,

“It’s clear she’s going to give birth soon, and she has already been cleaning all morning. And with you here now I wouldn’t want her getting over-excited, inducing labor.”

Narcissa agreed with her husband and started making her way towards the bedroom to lie down. However a few steps away from her husband and sister, a rush of fluid was released from between her legs, stopping her dead in her tracks. Lucius and Bellatrix slowly looked at each other, and then quickly walked over to Narcissa to help her to the bed.

A few hours later, Narcissa’s contractions were getting stronger and closer together, a good indicator she would be meeting her babies soon. She was already in so much pain, and was practically demanding her children to get out of her body.

“Cissy, it’s time to push, hold my hand and squeeze it as hard as you need to.” Bellatrix said.

Narcissa started pushing with her next contraction, screaming and squeezing Bella’s hand so hard she thought she would break it. After a few more pushes a faint cry was heard. Narcissa looked up to see her husband smiling and holding up their son! She was so happy and relieved that one of her children is a handsome boy. However, her relief was quickly taken over by more pressure, she had to pretend she wasn’t already expecting this.

“I…I think there is another one! Bella help me!” Narcissa desperately screamed.

This one was far more painful than the first child. More pushing, considerably more screaming, and practically holding on to her sisters hand for dear life. Finally after 4 minutes, there was relief, and another faint cry. Narcissa slowly sat up, Bellatrix was cleaning the baby, and told Narcissa,

“It’s a girl…thank goodness one of them is a boy.”

Narcissa quickly took hold of her daughter, fearing Bellatrix would look too close and see something not quite right. Narcissa finally looked at her daughter, she was absolutely beautiful. She already had small tufts of golden-white hair, and her skin looked to be an illustrious white shade. She felt melancholy wondering what her own daughter would have to go through in the future, Narcissa herself couldn’t even imagine it. Lucius smiled as he handed Narcissa their boy, and asked her,

“What should we name them, my dear?”

Narcissa thought of this for a moment, looking closely at her two children. Then replied,

“The boy’s name is Draco Lucius Malfoy”

Lucius and Bellatrix both approved of this, liking the combination of the celestial name with the family name, and patiently waited for Narcissa to come up with the girls name. After another few moments of pondering, she said,

“And our daughter is…Aurelia Estelle Malfoy”
