Yule Ball

~~~~~
The Yule Ball. A time near Christmas where three wizarding schools gather for a night of nothing but celebration and competition. All in honour for the quinquennial Triwizard Tournament. A competition where a champion from each school goes up in dangerous tasks for the grand prize of the Triwizard Cup.
The competion? Durmstrang and Beauxbatons.
Though they weren't champions the marauders (as they called themselves) found pleasure in watching people go head to head in such a dangerous game. Some might call it morbid. The marauders call it entertainment.
Think of it what you will but the Triwizard Tournament isn't our main priority at the moment, is it? Right now, our topic for gripping tension, drama and romance is the Yule Ball.
By some form of miracle the infamous James Potter had managed to land himself with Lily Evans, his current interest, if that's what you wanted to call it.
Peter had insisted that he has a date, wether the others believed him or not was out of the question.
Remus told the others he wasn't interested in going to the ball with anyone, if at all. Despite his friends attempts at convincing him.
And, Sirius? Well that's where we are now.
The portrait to the Gryffindor common room opened and Sirius walks in with a sigh.
"Alright, Padfoot?" Remus says with a smile as Sirius walks forward and sits beside him on the sofa in front of the fire. "How'd it go?"
If your wondering. Sirius had told Remus he had and interest in a girl in Ravenclaw, and he'd just gotten back from asking her to the Ball.
"Eh.. well, she said no. Someone had already asked her." Sirius said.
Remus nodded in acknowledgment. "I'm sorry."
"Yeah, well. I didn't like her as much as I'd let on." Sirius said with a huff.
"No?" Remus rhetorically asked with another smile. "Perhaps your quite the actor."
Sirius gave a half assed laugh. "That's likely."
Remus offered him a pat on the shoulder. "Well, dates are overrated anyway. I think people forget the joys of being single these days."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah."
Content silence falls over them as they both look into the blazing fire. Remus didn't plan on telling any of them what he felt for the boy next to him so he vowed to keep his mouth shut.
"Speaking of. Why don't you ever try to find a date, Moony?" Sirius asks Remus with a glance in his direction.
"Er... Well, I've never been very successful in the relationship scheme of things." Remus said.
"Really, you?" Sirius says exasperated.
"Yeah- why's that so hard to believe?"
"I'm just saying. Out of all of us, except James, I thought you'd have good game."
"Yeah. I've got none of that. Trust me." Remus laughs.
Sirius laughs too. "I dunno. Your smart, attractive, kind. I just thought people would be fawning over you from afar. Yo--"
"Wait." Remus smiled and faced Sirius fully. Sirius stops and seems confused. "You ...just called me attractive."
"What?" Sirius feels his face flush and he stares wide eyes at his friend.
"You called me attractive." He says again, and Sirius swears he sees some pink to his cheeks.
"No- no I didn't."
"Yes you did."
"N-no. Shut up, your delusional."
"Sure, whatever you say Padfoot."
"Yeah, were done here."
The silence doesn't last as long this time when Sirius speaks again.
"Hey. Y'know, when I said I didn't like her as much as I let on?" Sirius sounds skeptical about continuing as he awaits Remus's reply.
"Uh-huh." Is what he gets.
"Well I wasn't lying. I like someone but not- not her." Sirius avoids eye contact then, becoming uncharacteristically shy as his eyes leave Remus's and fall to his lap.
"Oh?" Remus smiled, intrigued. "Who is she?"
"Y'see that's the thing. It's not-" He pauses, his heart beats at a thousand miles an hour he doesn't know how this is going to go. "-it's not a she."
"Oh." Remus looks at him again, then. Mild surprise dawning his features. "Okay, who is he then?"
Sirius looks him in the eye then and his eyebrows furrow. "You don't mind?"
"What, you being gay? Or are yo--"
"No, I'm gay. You don't mind though?" This would be the first time someone actually didn't care that he was a homosexual. Not to get into detail.
"What? No. Of course not." Remus looks sympathetic and Sirius feel like his heart will jump out his chest as Remus reached up and holds the side of his face gently. When he pulls away, he maintains eye contact and continues. "Well if it makes you feel any better, I'm bi, so."
"Y- you are?"
"Yup." He smiles, seemingly proud of himself. "So, come on, who is he?"
"Um.."
"At least tell me the house. I'll try and narrow it down from there." Remus is determined to figure this out. If it's that last thing he does, by God hell do it.
"Ok... He's a Gryffindor." Sirius says as he eyes the undone tie falling over Remus's shoulders.
"Ok.. hmm." Remus's looks genuinely in thought for a moment. It's a look on his face Sirius would be lying if he said wasn't, well cute. "James?"
"Oh, Merlin no. I feel bad for anyone that does end up with him." They both laugh at that, some tension that had arose in the room dissipating for a moment.
"Ok, ok."
Half an hour passes of Remus trying to narrow it down but not getting any closer. He was begining to become so slightly frustrated.
"Ugh... Who is it?"
"Want me to narrow it down?" Sirius says with a smile at the oblivious boy in front of him.
"Yes please." He looks pleading. A playful, joking pleading of frustration as his face scrunches still trying to get closer to the conclusion. Like writing the world's most difficult essay.
"They're in this room." There it is. He said it. Now he waits. And his stomach flips, his breath leaves his lungs and his eyes flick away again.
Remus straightens his back and looks around the common room. The brow furrows again when he finds there isn't anyone else here. All out doing their own thing.
"But there's-- oh." He looks at Sirius again and if Sirius had to guess what his expression was it would be anger? Disgust, possibly? When he does look it's nothing of the sort. It's, what would you call that, relieved? "Is it--"
Remus is unable to finish as Sirius leans forward quickly catching his lips with his. Remus is rigid, not knowing what to do with himself, with his hands. Sirius was about to pull away then but Remus begins kissing him back. Sirius feels Remus's hand, that had been lying on the back of the sofa, hold his face like before. But this time it's firm, not allowing Sirius to leave even if he wanted to. Remus's other hand ends on Sirius's knee and he feels Remus create patterns with his thumb, as they kiss. They both feel goosebumps travel from their fingers to their toes as their mouths move in unison.
To Sirius, this feels like putting in the final piece to a puzzle, he can't help but wonder if Remus feels it too.
Sirius gains coherent thoughts again and pulls away. Eyes wide and breathing heavily, he looks at Remus to find the same expression. He looks stunned, like he'd just been told some really shocking news. Well, I suppose he has.
"..me." Remus finally finished his sentence, his voice small and flustered.
Sirius chuckles. "Yeah."
The hand, still holding, Sirius's face tucks some hair behind his ear as Remus looks between his eyes and Sirius finds himself flushing impossibly deeper.
"So..." Sirius starts. "Want to go to the Ball together?"
Remus smiles, and Sirius feels the thumb at his cheek stroke just above his jaw line.
"Yeah, I think that's a great idea." Remus says, goosebumps run rapidly down Sirius's spine feeling Remus's hands on his knee and in his hair.
"And you said you had no game." Sirius says, almost breathless again.
Remus begins pulling him in again. "Shut up."
The kiss is slower this time, more rhythmic more, well planned. And not thrusted on you as if you'd just been confessed to. ...y'know?.
This time Sirius moves his hands and he runs his right hand through Remus's hair while the other holds him by the hip. When his eyes fall closed Sirius finds himself forgetting their in the common room, forgetting their in school. Just everything but Remus. His stomach flutters every time Remus smiles, his breaths shortens when he enters the room. And when he's looking at something and Remus leans over his shoulder, close enough to feel his breath on his neck... Well let's just say it's a feeling he ends up going to bed thinking about regularly.
He'd like Remus for a while now. Like a while.
It's just sad really. Sirius will never forget the feeling he had when he realised he like him in that way. There was a lot of denial. Like, a lot. But when he came down to it and accepted it, it was the most brilliant rush he'd ever felt. And if he could go back and relive that moment he would.
Right here. Right now. Nothing else mattered. Not You-Know-Who. Not the essays due. Not even Lily walking in through the portrait right now- wait.
"OH MY GOD!!" Her voice quietens when she realises the volume. "I'm sorry. Geez sorry."
Lily held a stack of four books in hand, seemingly just coming back from the library.
Sirius watches, frozen as Lily's eyes quickly dart between him and Remus, then to the portrait and back again. It's not long until realisation dawn her face and she stares open mouthed at them.
"Well. Sorry for ruining the moment." She smirks at Sirius face and Sirius finds himself smiling too despite the embarrassment.
Sirius feels Remus's hands grab for the one still holding his face and lowers it to his knee but, he doesn't let go.
"Well this is awkward." Lily says with a joking lift of her eyebrows, for good measure. "So, how long has this been going on, then?"
"Just now." Both Remus and Sirius say in unison.
Sirius feels his heart warm at the small squeeze he feels Remus give to his hand and the smiles on the lily's face.
Remus looks at Lily then, shuffling in his seat to face her. "Lily, I'm gonna have to ask you not to mention this, to anyone. James especially."
Lily smiles warmly at the both of them and Sirius feel warmth pool in his chest at the sheer compassion emanating from the girl, despite all the friendly fight the have with eachother.
"My mouth is sealed." She says finally.
"Thank you." Sirius says. Merlin knows what James would do if he knew. Sirius could picture it now. Endless interrogation, constant glances, repeated jokes despite all protests. Perhaps even more obnoxious than Sirius's repeated "no I'm serious" jokes.
Her smile doesn't falter when she speaks again. "Well, I'll leave you two lovebirds alone." Then she strides happily across the room and up to the girls dormitory.
"Y'know, I have an idea." Sirius says watching Lily's retreating figure.
"Yeah?" Remus answers turning to him again.
"If we go to the Yule Ball together. Make it grand, James would blow his socks." Sirius says leaning and arm in the back of the sofa.
"Well, were going together either way, right?"
"Yeah we are."
"Then, I think it's a brilliant idea." Remus leans his arm on the sofa mimicking Sirius posture. His hand lands in Sirius's forearm and they both smile.
Sirius kisses him again then. It's shorter this time but filled just as much feeling.
~~~~~

T'was the night. The fateful Yule Ball fell upon hogwarts on Christmas day. The day was full of laughter and gift giving. Then once night fell the atmosphere became nervous but yet still joyous.

Sirius sat in the common room once again conversing with James.

"Honestly Padfoot. I still don't understand why you've given up on finding a date." James says with a role of his eyes. He was waiting for Lily who was still getting ready. The ball was to begin in an hour or so and James was already in his dress robes.

"For the last time, Prongs. I've told you, I do have one." Sirius said with a sigh. "And just because you got yourself one with Evans? Come on James, you've been flaunting that all week."

"Well you won't tell me who, so it's basically the same thing." James says in faked offence. "I'm your best friend Sirius, I don't get why you won't just tell me. And, for the record I've not been "flaunting" anything."

"Uh-huh sure, besides there's a lot of reasons why I won't tell you, James." Sirius says matter-of-factly.

James dramatically puts a hand over his heart, apparently offended. "I'm trustworthy!"

"Yeah. When it comes to stuff like this, your about as trustworthy as a Death Eater." Sirius says with an amused smile. And when James looks at him in disbelief he continues. "You'll find out soon enough anyway. Patience, Prongs, can go a long way."

James drawled a dramatic groan at Sirius's words. Patience was not his strong suit.

Not too long after, Lily makes her way down the stairs from the girls dorm, sporting a dark red, v-cut dress the ran to just above her ankles. She wore silver heels and the red of the dress complemented her hair.

Sirius snorted when James saw her, gave him a nudge and stepped slightly to the side.

James walked forward and held a hand out to Lily and she smiled and put her hand in his. Sirius would be lying if he said he wasn't happy for James. He'd been pining over Lily since first year, and frankly he'd gotten bored of watching them dance around eachother like a pair of confused ducks.

James and Lily began walking toward the portrait and before they left James turned. "Coming, Padfoot?"

Sirius waved his hand dismissively. "It's alright. I'll wait for Remus." He saw the smile Lily put on at his words and James just shrugged.

"Suit yourself. See you in a bit. Looking forward to seeing who your "date" is." James smiled and then they left, but Sirius didn't miss the small wink from Lily as the portrait closed again.

Sirius waited on the sofa for Remus. He and Remus hadn't really talked about what happened a couple nights ago, they both just sort of silently accepted it. He got a rush when he and Remus would sneak a kiss every now and the. Share look across the room and when no one was looking would hold hands during dinner. It happened a few times when Remus would gently place his hand on Sirius's knee during lesson.

Sirius planned on asking Remus where they stood with eachother at some point tonight. How that was going to go, he didn't know.

"Well, you look deep in thought." Remus's voice breaks through his thoughts and he looks towards him.

He stood and smiled at him. "Don't you look ravishing."

Remus looks Sirius up and down still smiling with a little bit of a blush. "Could say the same to you."

"Such a charmer." Sirius says with a smirk.

"I learned from the best." He gives Sirius a small, playful nudge. "Have you seen, Peter?"

"Oh, he left a while ago, said he was meeting up with his date." Sirius says dismissively.

Remus nodded and Sirius held his hand out just as James had done moments ago. "Shall we go, then?"

"Let's." Remus places his hand in Sirius's.

Before they go to leave Sirius leans forward and catches Remus's mouth quickly. If Remus didn't pull away Sirius could've stayed there all night and not even attend the ball.

Remus chuckles and begins to pull him toward the portrait.

When Remus and Sirius make it to the hall there's still student shuffling to get through the door and Remus has to hold onto Sirius's hand somewhat tighter to be sure not to get lost in the sea of laughing students.

When they enter the hall, to their left James is talking with Lily and Peter sitting next to them but he's alone.

At their entry James cuts conversation as he sees them. Confusion crosses his face and his brow furrows as he looks between their joined hands and their faces. "Oh." There's a long pause as Remus and Sirius stop in front of them. Then suddenly, his eyebrows raise and his mouth opens. "Oh! That-- you're the date!" His hands fall over his face and he sighs drastically. "But-- oh Merlin I'm never that oblivious."

Sirius laughs heartily at the frustrated expression. "Merlin, James. Calm down, you've been flaunting that you'd got your date with Evans all week, didn't expect you to notice anything."

"Hey!" He says looking him in the eye suddenly. "I wasn't flaunting I was just happy about it."

"I think the whole school knows that." Remus says this time, an amused smile on his features.

James looks like he's going to retort but just sighs and crosses his arms. "Well, I think you make quite the couple." He pauses for a moment looking between their mildly stunned, blushing faces. "Are you-- are you dating?"

"Um..." Sirius finds himself unable to respond, this was exactly what he wanted to talk to Remus about tonight and now that the questions come to light he's lost for words.

Remus steps forward slightly, standing just in front of Sirius and Sirius feels Remus let go on his hand as it's relocated on his shoulder comfortingly. "We haven't really spoken about it, since it happened." He turns to Sirius then. "Do you... Want to?"

He was asking this ...here? Now? Sirius becomes short of breath willing deeply to just say something. He pulls himself together and smiles at him. "Remus, would I have kissed you, if I didn't want to?"

Remiss eyebrows furrow. "I-- I suppose not."

"Then I suppose you have your answer. Remus, will you be my boyfriend?" He says finally, his stomach twisting in on itself and his heart beating rapidly out of his chest. He's almost scared that Remus could hear it.

The smile Remus responds with is enough to have Sirius blushing. "Yes."

Sirius was about to lean toward him again but--. "Awww!" The noise startles him and he turns to James in disbelief. "I bet--- I'm ruining the moment, right now."

Sirius hears Remus laugh and then Remus is the one pulling him in. The world drowns out for a moment and it's just them again. Like nothing else mattered.

They all laugh again when they pull apart. Not their first kiss by far but just as special as.

Later on the ball is under way. The champions of all the school had done their first dance and James and dragged Lily over the the floor both laughing joyfully.

They'd all teased Peter briefly about lying about his date but it was really for some shits and giggles. James had also teased Remus and Sirius about their moment earlier. And they too teased him about not noticing a thing (they hadn't actually tried hiding anything every one else was just too caught up in themselves).

Sirius put his drink down and held a hand in front of Remus. "A dance?" He smiles down at him.

From his seat Remus smiles and accepts his hand. "Don't mind if I do. I'm not much of a dancer."

"You'll be fine. Just do what I do." Sirius says with a warm smile.

Remus raises an eyebrow and stands. "If ever I did what you did I'd probably be dead already."

Sirius fanes offence. "And yet I'm still here."

"For now. Untill you do something especially stupid." Remus says his smirk mirroring Sirius's.

Sirius pulls Remus through the crowd of students and then they both stand still for a moment looking at eachother before they move in tandem to the rhythm.

They weren't there long when the song end but a slower song began playing this time. Remus begins leaving but Sirius catches his wrist and pulls him closer this time. As he's pulled closer to him his other hand lands his hip.

He smiles at the flushed expression from the other. "Like I said. Just do what I do."

Remus just smiles and holds his hand firmly in Sirius's. His other hand falls to his hip to.

Remus can't help but realise just how ...right all this felt. How being this close to Sirius made him feel complete. There'd been a hole in him he'd tried for years to fill, since he was five. After the attack of Fenrir Greyback he'd become extremely insecure, socially awkward and just not the same. As if the unfortunate event had left him inferior from every one else. As if being a monster every month segregated him from everyone he cared about. But he met the marauders. They found out about his secret. They helped him, offered him comfort he'd gone so long without. Became animals, for him. As if being a werewolf meant nothing to them. Like him being the way he is didn't mean a goddamn thing at all. To the marauders, they didn't give two shits what he was. To them he was just someone who needed help, and they were willing to give up part of themselves to prove Remus wrong. They'd broken the law for him for Merlin's sake. If that didn't mean anything he doesn't know what does.

Needless to say he was damn glad he'd met them. Whether that meant running after Sirius and James, making sure they didn't do anything especially dumb. Wether that meant ending up with an overwhelming crush on the boy he'd kissed nights ago. He didn't care, he was just glad things have changed for the better.

"Hey." Sirius says and Remus blinks coming back to reality. "You alright?"

Remus nodded. "Perfect. I'm not standing on your feet, am I?"

Sirius smiles at him. "How could you? Feels like I'm walking on air."

Remus blushes and looks away for a second. "Your so stupid."

"No. Just in love." Sirius says.

"Love?" Remus finds himself saying before he can stop himself.

Sirius looks at him quickly. "Yeah? I'm sorry was that--"

"No it's okay." Remus smiles reassuring at him. "It's just. That's the first time anyone's told me that."

The smile Sirius gives him almost makes his knees weak as he looks deeply into his eyes. "Well then. Allow me to be the first. Remus, I love you."

Remus's breath catches and he doesn't even respond when he kisses him. It's so much better than their kisses before. More emotion, more Sirius, there just more of everything. As they slowly sway to the music, holding eachother so closely, there's nowhere Remus would rather be right now. He almost finds it ridiculous that he'd even thought about not coming to the ball at all.

He didn't know how long their relationship would last. But he was definitely going to make the most of it. If they broke up weeks from now it would have been the best few weeks of his life. Yes, it would hurt when it ends, but he thinks it's a hurt he'd able to heal from.

Actually thinking about it. Losing Sirius doesn't feel like something he'd be able to live through. He never wants to loose him. Not after everything he's lost already. And now that he had him, he's not letting go. If Sirius ended up barrelling toward a cliff, he's jumping after him. If that thought was morbid then so be it.

Holy shit. He-.

"I love you too."
