It’s what’s expected of you

“Just what do you think you are doing?!” A shrill exclamation caused two young men to startle and spring back, protecting one another immediately though, arms wrapped around bodies and wand hands hovering over their holsters. The war still leaving its mental marks.

“Mother…”

“It is expected of you,” Narcissa said scornfully, looking down her nose at her son who was wrapped in the embrace of another man. “To marry Astoria and produce an heir or heiress.”

“Well he won’t be doing that,” came a snarky reply. Blaise stood proud and tall, pushing Draco behind him. “Neither of us will be doing what’s expected of us any longer Mrs. Malfoy.”

“Mother… I’m moving in with Blaise… I’m jointing the healers apprenticeship program. I’m not marrying Astoria. And she’s not marrying me. She is with Theo.”

Narcissa frowned severely and leveled a harsh gaze on the two young men who she’d walked in on in Draco’s childhood bedroom. They’d been intertwined, kissing gently, standing over two of Draco’s partially filled trunks.

“And just when was I to be informed of this?” She demanded harshly. She advanced on them, coming into their space, her spiky heels making harsh clacks against the marble.

“Once he was safely in my apartment,” Blaise snapped.

“Mother I fully intended to tell you but Astoria and I both agreed to tell our families at the same time to avoid unnecessary speculation. I meant to tell you today at tea,” Draco said, voice a bit shaky. But he steeled himself. “I have no intention of carrying out any more of your and father’s plans for me. I love Blaise. I love the healing arts. I’m not going to be your heir. If you disinherited me today, I still wouldn’t change my mind.”

Narcissa frowned deeper at him and turned on her heel before stalking away.

“That could’ve gone better,” Blaise said, gently drawing Draco into his arms.

“No that went about as well as it was ever going to… it’s what I expected of her.”
