Doctors Appointment
Harry was too scared to talk much on the way to the hospital. Frank told him they were going there to get checked out then they would check out their offices. Harry played with the buckles on the car seat, never having been on one like this before. The Dursleys only cared for their appearance so they bought a cheap one for the few times they had to drive him somewhere.
They made it to the small hospital that was the go to for CPS cases. Mount Sinai Kravis Children's Hospital was one of the few hospitals they frequented because of their experience with pediatrics. They went into the waiting room and Haley went to check in while Frank and Harry went to the seats. Harry sat on the ground in front of Frank and looked around the room. He was scared so he reached back for Frank's hand.
“Come here Harry. Do you want to sit with me?” Frank asked, leaning down. He was worried about how quiet the child was but this was also very normal in many abuse cases.
“What is going to happen now?” Harry asked. He was looking at the ground mumbling, making it hard for Frank to understand.
“Now we are going to see a doctor who will fix any injuries you have. Depending on if you can leave right away or not we will go to the office and rest.” Frank said. He really wanted to run his hand through Harry’s hair but the dried blood made him hesitate. They waited about 20 minutes before they were called back.
Nurse Emma took his height and weight before bringing him to a room. She asked him some questions about when the last time he went to the doctor was, how old he was, where he was from and more. Harry answered the best he could but he was tired and scared.
About 15 minutes later a tall man with blonde hair, blue green eyes and some stubble on his chin came in. He introduced himself as Doctor Tanner Reed. He seemed to be in his mid thirties and had friendly eyes with wrinkles around them suggesting he smiles a lot.
“Good afternoon everybody. I am going to look at a few things then I am going to run some tests if that is alright with everyone.” Doctor Reed said.
“That is fine doctor. Harry here is a bit nervous so would you mind explaining what you are doing first?” Frank asked. Harry has admitted he has never, in his memory at least, been to a doctor. For the first part of the exam Doctor Reed examined Harry’s eyes, ears, throat, and reflexes. They had a bit of a problem with examining his reflexes because Harry thought that they were going to hit him and panicked. Frank got him calmed down and was able to have Harry sit on his lap for the next little while.
“Okay now. I am going to need Harry to stand up, take his shirt off and bend over to touch your toes. This will help me look at his spine and if he is having any problems with that.” Doctor Reed said. He was also making notes of every bruise and scar he found as he went. When Harry took off his shirt he had to stop himself from reacting but based of Haley’s sudden gasp and Franks muffled swears they had clearly seen as well. Harry’s back was a mixture of bruises ranging from black and blue to yellow and green, old and new scars, and some open lashed that were looking infected. His ribs were not looking any better covered in scars and he was so thin you could see each rib, including that one was clearly broken.
Haley left the room to get a camera and document the evidence of abuse and to give herself a break. She wiped her tears and took a deep breath before entering the room again. She took some pictures before the doctor had Harry take off the shorts as well but leave his underwear on. His legs had some scars, not nearly as bad, and what seemed to be teeth marks from a dog bite.
Doctor Reed gave Harry a hospital gown to put on and helped him tie it in the back before taking him for some x-rays and a MRI. He wanted to get a look at what damage he needed to heal the best he could. Harry ended up falling asleep in the MRI machine so he carefully carried the little fragile body back to the room and put him on the bed to sleep while they waited for the tests.
He was looking at the x-rays when they heard Harry starting to wake up. Out of the corner of his eye he could see Harry squirming and figured now would be a good time for the urine sample. He explained what to do and lead Harry to the bathroom where he waited to make sure everything would be okay. Next they got the blood testing done with.
By the end of the appointment Harry was exhausted, stressed, and he just wanted to leave. They needed to cast his arm because he broke his left wrist at some point recently apparently, though he was not sure when. What he did not know was that his magic was working to numb the pain and mend the break while also fighting to keep his functioning through his other injuries and malnutrition. They also noticed the burn on his hand from the stove earlier and made sure to wrap it and put some antibiotic cream on the burn and his back. Doctor Reed gave Frank a prescription for antibiotics to try and get rid of the infection and avoid one of the burnt hand.
Harry allowed Frank to carry him out of the hospital where he was buckled back into the carseat and promptly fell asleep. They drove to the nearest office where Haley would go to do Harry’s paperwork and send the evidence to the police and lawyer. Frank was taking Harry to his house for the night and tomorrow they would worry about placement. Dudley, the Dursley's own child, was placed in a local foster home with a couple who could help him process everything and make healthy choices. They were worried about his health because he should not be that big at 9 years old.
Frank carried Harry into the house where he kissed his wife hello and brought the small child up to the guest room that was set up for this specific purpose. He went back down to explain everything he could to his wife, leaving out a lot of the details he was not legally allowed to know, and then got some dinner and relaxed with Mary, his wife. He knew that tomorrow would be another long day, but he was ready for it the best he could be.
