Chapter 7
Enid's POV
That day, one member of the staff interrupted Doctor Kinbott lesson to say that Miss Weems wanted me in her office at the end of the lesson.
It was weird. I mean the full moon has just passed and I didn't end in any trouble this time, so I have no idea why she was calling me in her office. So I went there pretty nervous.
I knocked at the door and, when Miss Weems said "Come in", I opened it and enetered in the room. The office was dark and full of inanimated animals like always. The only new thing was the brunette girl, dressed in black, standing in front the principal's desk and looking at me like I was the last thing she wanted to see.
- Did you called me, Miss Weems? - I asked.
- Miss Sinclair, this is Miss Wednesday Addams, your new roomate. I would appreciate if you walked her to the school and show her your room. - She told me like I have any chance to say no. Obviously I didn't. - Miss Addams, Enid will be your guide. I hope you'll find yourselves compatible. - She said to the girl whose name apparently was Wednesday Addams and was now my roomate.
I opened the door and followed Wednesday outside, showing her the school and the students, explaining her that Nevermore welcomed all the supernatural creatures and the ones that don't fit in the world outside.
- You seem to be pretty normal - She said, with her deadly tone. - Why are you here?
I didn't want to talk about that. I mean I had to tell my new roomate about the fact that I will disappear one day at months 'cause I turned into a werewolf during the full moon. But I have just met this girl and I'm not sure how she would react at the news her roomate turns into a dangerous creatures that hunts humans once a month.
- "Seem" is the key word - I replied, not directly answering her question. - Now, what do you think if I present you the other students? - I asked, trying to distract her. She was obviously not happy about my-not-answer but didn't say anything so I proceeded to show her the different kind of students.
- Here's the werewolves, the vampires, the witches and every other creature you could think about - I explained, pointing at the different groups of students.
The werewolves were sat at a table, eating raw meat, the vampires were on a bench, drinking from blood sacks and looking at their phones, the witches were on the ground, confronting the recipes on their grimoires. The other undefined students were doing normal teenagers shit.
Well, "normal" was a word that can't cohexist with Nevermore students. Normality here was throwing knives at the apple on the head of someone else.
- And this is our room - I said, opening the door. The room was divided in two side, mine - full of my favorite k-pop groups' posters and with pile of my clothes everywhere - and Wednesday's side - empty and on the tone of black. - What do you think? - I asked her.
She was standing there, one of my pink socks - the one I lost in the chaos - in her hand.
- I thinnk if your things don't trepass in my side of the room, we won't have problems.
I picked the socks from her hand and thanked her, then proceeded to throw it in the pile of clothes in the corner. - I'll let you unpack your luggage - I said pointing at the suitcases on her bed. - We'll see at dinner. The dining room is one of the rooms we passed by. If you can't find it, ask one of the students.
I left the room and went to meet my friends.
I didn't have many friends at Nevermore, just three. Tamara, the vampire who always wore sunglasses; Xavier, a demigod who loves all kind of mithology; and Ajax - I still don't know what kind of supernatural creatures they are, honestly - they're the ace of the archery team and Nevermore's party beast.
- Guess what? I have a new roomate - I said, approaching them.
- Really? Who? - Xavier asked me.
- She's a new student. Her name's Wednesday Addams and she doesn't like to talk. Not to me, at least.
- What's wrong in not-talking? -Ajax signed. They were a person of few words.
- Nothing - I said. - But I'd like to know more about why is she moving here -I replied.
- You didn't tell her you're a werewolf, did you? - Tamara asked me. She knew about the trouble I had accepting my supernatural nature. I shook my head. - No, I didn't. - I sighed. - Not yet. But I will. - I said, my voice sounded weak in my own ears.
- You know you'll have to tell her before the next transformation, Enid? - she said.
I did. But how could I explain my particular situation to her. I mean being a werewolf was already a difficult situation to explain but mine was even more uneasy.
I wasn't born a werewolf, I was turned into one when I was three. Mum and I were walking in the park, going back home, when something attacked us. I remebered the scream and then the pain in my arm. That episode kept hunting me in my sleep for years. It was unforgettable.
Luckily, the pack of San Francisco found me and raised me. At least, till I was 14. At that point, my wolf form became uncontrollable. According to Romeo, our alpha, the transformation through the years was regular for pure blood werewolves but became really hard to control for the ones who were turned into werewolves since 14 to 18 - it had something to do with hormones. I was 18 now, so this thing should be over it.
When they heard about Nevermore, they didn't hesitate to send me here to learn how to control myself. In the last two years, my aggressive episodes have significantly lowered. But I was still a danger.
At 7 pm, we went to the dining room and sat at a table in a corner. When I saw a black spot out the corner of my eye, I knew it was Wednesday. I raised my hand, catching her attention, and invited her to sit with us.She sat next to me and I got hit by her smell.
Everyone has a smell, it was like a fingerprint. Xavier smelled like old books, Tamara like blood, Ajax like lemon. Wednesday smelled like cinnamon and incense.
We sat there and talked. Wednesday didn't talk su much - as I expected - but she seemed to be interested in the coversation. I think so, at least - it was really hard to read her expression.
After dinner we got back in our bedroom. The room smelled already like Wednesday. Her suitcases weren't on her bed anymore, so I thought she unpacked them.
When she went in the bathroom, I took the chance to change my clothes. I was about to do that when I heard smething. A pitter-patter that came from Wednesday's bed. It wasn't an animal. Animals are silent, this was trying to be silent. I jumped on my bed, my senses tense.
Wednesday got out the bathroom wearing a black and white sweater and looked at me like I was crazy. From her point of you I was standing on my bed for no reason, so I understood her reaction. - What are you doing? - She asked me.
- There's something in your bed - I whisper. A second later, she jumped over her bed catching whatever was moving.
- Hello, Thing - I heard her say to the... Amputated-living-hand she was holding.
- What's that? - I asked, leaning towards her, looking at the hand. She turned around, looking at me with her incomprehensible expression. I detected her muscles tense but I didn't understad the reason. She took a step back and drop the hand on the desk.
- That's my friend. Thing, Enid. Enid, Thing. - She presented us. I bowed to look Thing from a close up. It was an amputated-living hand as I supposed. There were scars on its back.
I introduce myself and ended up shaking Thing.
- You know strangers aren't allowed in the school? - I asked Wednesday, while Thing took its place back on the desk.
- Are you gonna spy on me? - She asked me.
- Of course not - I replied. - And if Thing is gonna stay here and help with the chores, I'm not gonna complain.
- Fine, then. I guess we have another roomate, now - She said, opening a drawer from her desk. Thing jumped into it. It seemed to like its new bedroom.
- Alright, then. Tomorrow there's school. Time to sleep - I said, picking my pjs and entering the bathroom. I heard wednesday talk with Thing from behind the door but when I left the bathroom, Wednesday was on her bed.
-Goodnight, Wednesday. Goodnight, Thing - I said, turning off the light. Thing knocked in reply and I heard Wednesday whispered a "goodnight".
I heard her breath going almost instantly deep, sign she was already asleep. But I wasn't sleep at all. I kept thinking abot the fact I should tell her about my nature. It wasn't fair towards her to hide this information. In addiction to this, Wednesday's smell soaked the room and i needed time to get used to hit. I surrendered to sleep around midnight.
***************************************************
Two weeks later, something unusual happened. During dinner, someone entered screaming that the cabin was on fire. All the students went outside, I saw the fire and then I smelled the smoke. I started coughing, like the other werewolves and vampires whose senses are as advanced as mine. Wednesday looked at me with something that looked like concern.
- I'm fine - I said, keeping coughing.
Then, one of the guardians came to the principal, holding a guy whose face was hidden in his sweater hood. - Principal, we found him near the cabin. I think he set it on fire - the guardian said, taking off the hood.
The guy was maybe 18 or 19, he was tall, with brown eyes and curly hair.
- Hey, Mum - he said, looking at the principal. What the fuck?!?
- Tyler - The principal said - what are you doing here? And did you set the cabin on fire? - She asked.
The guy freed himself from the guardian's grasp. - I'm here 'cause Dad dropped me here, since he's about to go somewhere on the West Coast 'cause of his job. To answer your second question, no, I didn't set your cabin on fire, Mother. I got lost in the dark and went in the wrong direction. When I saw the light, I just went there. But, then, I found out it come from a fire. Before I had time to move your gorilla jumped over me and brought me here without listening to my explanations. - He said.
I wasn't caughing anymore, sign that the smoke was disappearing. In fact, one of the stuff members came to tell us that the fire was estinguished.
The principal ordered to one of the waitress to lead her son to a room and told us to get beck to our bedroom.
- What do you think? Did the principal's son set the cabin on fire, in your opinion? - I asked Wednesday, jumping on my bed, after updating Thing about what happened.
- I don't think so. He didn't have any reason to do so - she said, while playing with her laptop.
- Why do you think he is here? He seems pretty normal to be a new student at Nevermore. - Isaid.
- You seem pretty normal too and, yet, here you are - she commented. We both froze. That was my chance to explain why was I here. I took a deep breath and asked her: - You don't know why I'm here?
I just realized that was the first time Wednesday has shown some sign of interest towards me. I felt honored. - No - She replied. She definetely know how to kill my mood but, after spending two weeks with her, I've started to understood her.
- And this is annoying you - I said. She clenched her jaw, proving that I was right. - Are you gonna ask me? - I kept teasing her.
- If you want to tell me, I'll be here - she said and I couldn't help myself holding my laugh. She looked at me really pissed and that made me smile even more.
Thing knocked at the desk, catching my attention.
"I'm gonna ask you." It signed. "What kind of supernatural creature are you?"
- Thank you for the question, Thing. - I said, smiling. - I'm a werewolf, from the pack of San Francisco.
Thare it was. The truth was spoken, now she would probably look at me disgusted and wanted to change the room. It would hurt but it wasn't the first time I changed a roomate 'cause of my nature.
Thing knocked again. "See? I told you. You could have just asked her instead of making research"
- You did research?!? - I asked. I knew I sounded happy but I was happy, I mean Wednesday was acctually interested in me. Like I thought.
- Maybe - She said shrugging her shoulders.
- Let me see - I said, leading to her and sitting on her bed. That was a bad idea. I noticed Wednesday tensed but she still turned her laptop towards me. I read the research she has made.
- Not bad, for someone with your basic knowledge of supernatural creatures. - I said touching Wednesday's shoulder with my elbow. I felt goosebumps all over my body and heard the wolf inside me growls.
I moved back to my bed, trying to put as much space as I can between me and Wednesday. That wasn't supposed to happen, I wasn't suppose to felt that. Whatever it was.
It has been the stress of tonight. That was it. Nothing more, I wasn't losing control over my werewolf side. Especially not when I still had one week before the next full moon. I needed sleep.
I said "Goodnight" to Wednesday and Thing like everynight since we became roomate and turn off the light.
*********************************************************
The morning after I felt better. My werewolf side was under control. Wednesday, on the other side, wasn't. I saw her moving towards the rests of the cabin and couldn't help myself following her.
Wednesday was like a black hole, I always ended up falling in her gravity.
- Where are you going? - I asked her.
- Investigate - She replied, without turning around but slowly her steps so I can reach her side. - Why are you following me? - she asked me.
- It seems interesting. I'm gonna come with you - I replied.
When we arrived, everything was turned into ashes and blacken woods.
- So.... What are we looking for? - I asked.
- I'll know when I'll find out - She replied. Of course she'd say something like that. I wasn't even surprised.
- So you don't think the principal's son set the cabin on fire? - I asked, looking at her back. Her braids were blown by the wind.
- I answered to this question last night. Tyler didn't have any reason to do this. So, whoever did this, in my opinion, has a reason. Probably deleting any traces of the crimes they were commiting here. --She said.
For some reason, the fact that she remembered that guy's name bothered me.
- So, what kind of "crime" do you think was committed here? - I asked her, trying to distract myself from that thought. She didn't replied, so I turned around and saw her kneeling down, looking at something in the dirt.
I moved towards her. I realised she was looking at the foot of a pillar where there was a rectangular hole. - What do you think? - I whispered, afraid my voice would make something fell.
- I think there was something hidden here - She whispered in answer. - I also think someone came to get it back, last night, and set the hut on fire so no one would noticed that something was missing.
She stood up, faster than I thought she could, clashing against the column.
My body reacted without my will, it was more like a reflex. I grabbed Wednesday's arm and draw her towards me.
The wolf growled again. This time I didn't have any doubts. And it happened when I was closed to her. That could mean just one thing. Something I refused to accept could happen to me,, especially with Wednesday.
The other members of the pack talked about the effect crushing over someone could have over the werewolf form. And that was happening to me right now.
I stepped back, interrupting the contact betwwen my body and Wednesdy's one.
- I didn't thought you were so clumsy, Willa - I said, trying to hide what was happening to my body. - We almost felt under the ruins because of you.
- Did you just called me Willa? - She asked, annoyance painting all over her face.
I did. I was thinking about that nickname for a while - her name was too long - but considering a pillar almost fell over us, I think that wasn't the point.
- We almost die and your first thought is that I called you Willa?!? I should have called you Hermione, cause you should need to sort out your priorities - I said, sharing my thoughts.
- Listen, Ronald Weasley, I don't need to sort my priorities. You, on the other hand, didn't need to step so close to me. I would't clush and made this mess if you left me a little bit of space.
I had to stop. Did she just called me Ronald Weasley? - You know Harry Potter?!? - I asked shocked and amused at the same time.
We kept talking about Harry Potter till we got back to the park and I kept teasing her, calling her Willa.
- Are you gonna call me Willa from now on? - She asked me, but she didn't seem so bothered about it.
- Yes, Willa. I will definitely gonna do so - I said, smiling.
- Fine. But don't you dare call me like that in front of the others or I'm gonna put a poisonous snake in your bed, understood? - She said.
I couldn't believe I just heard her accept it. - Okay - I said, still in shock. - Bye, Wednesday, see you at lunch - I said, since we were among other students and I was pretty sure she'd definitively know where to find a poisonus snake.
***************************************************
Wednesday wanted to talk with Bianca. And Tamara was suggesting her to challenge Queen Bee at fencing.
- There's no way we let Wednesday do that - I said, before realizing it.
That wasn't me. I mean it was me, but it was a reaction led by my instict. Protectiveness was one of the most common signed of what werewolves felt when they were feeling something. We called that feeling imprinting.
- You can't let me do anything. I do whatever I want - Wednesday stated, deadly. I felt the blood raising to my face, my cheeks were probably turning pink. - What challenge are we talking about? - Wednesday asked Tamara.
When they explained her about the fencing challenge, she didn't hesitate to accept. I couldn't do anything to stop her. Not when she told us to organize the challenge nor when she left the dining room. I had lessons after lunch, so I would see her again at the fencing meeting.
Two hours later - that felt like two days - Tamara, Xavier, Ajax and I were waiting for Wednesday outside the training room. She appeared, wearing a black fancing outfit and I heard the wolf growl.
I finally understood what it was trying to say. "I want her". I did want her. But I couldn't have her.
We followed Wednesday in the room and looked at her, wearing the helmet and hold the sabre. She wasn't kidding about her fencing skills. She won the first round.
I heard the students around me say something about Gomez Addams - probably Wednesday's father - and how many awards he won at fencing when he was still at Nevermore.
I didn't think Wednesday's would appreciate people mentioning her father. In fact, she lost the next round.
Last match, everyone was holding his breath. I saw Wednesday's sabre move first at left, followed by Bianca's one. In a split second, Wednesday's sabre changed its direction and hit Bianca setting the victory for Wednesday.
The crowd exploded and everyone started shouted. We went to congratulate Wednesday who looked really happy, even without a smile.
Bianca told us to follow her outside and we asked her the questions about the cabin. She didn't know anything about the box hidden at the base of the pillar. So, basically, the entire challege was pointless.
- Let me know if I can do anything else. And whenever you want, I'm ready for a re-match - Bianca said, going back in the training room.
That was the moment I felt the anger raising inside me and I had to fight the intict of growling.
This crush-thing need to sto as soon as possible.
After Wednesday explained her plan, we scattered. The guys went to the library while I follow Wednesday back in our room.
I knew it was a bad idea. The more time I spent with her, the more my feeling would become intense. But I couldn't help myself. I needed to be as close as I can to her.
- Why are you following me now, Enid? - She asked me, on the way back to our room.
- You're going to your room. I'm going to my room. It ain't my fault if they are the same room - I replied, hoping she'd believe my lies.
When we got back in our bedroom, Willa announced her victory to Thing and then say that she needed her shower. The smell of cinnamon and incense intensified after the fencing, I noticed.
- You were right, Willa - I heard myself say.
She stopped on the bathroom's entry. - About what? Bianca didn't have any answer - She said.
- I doubted you 'cause I've never seen you fencing. You're really good. - I said. She looked at me for a few second before closing the bathroom's door behind her.
I heard the water flow in the shower and I jumped on my bed, smashing my pillow over my face.
Fuck, I have a crush on my roomate. I thought. I wish my mind stopped there but the sound of the shower kept remembering that Wednesday was naked on the other side of the door and I started to imagine things. I had to go.
I jumped off my bed and picked my lacrosse racket. - Tell Willa, we'll see at dinner - I said to Thing before running out of that bedroom which smelled so much like her.
I went at the lacrosse field and started training. I run a few times around the field, to heat up, and then proceeded to throw balls into the net. Lacrosse has always helped me control my werewolves nature. Moving in general helped me get free of the excess of adrenaline. Right now, my adrenaline was flowing in my veins at the memory of Wednesday match. How she moved. So elegant. So determined. So... sexy. I throw a ball with too much energy at that thought.
Ughhhhh. How was I supposed to control my feelings if my mind was working against me?
I trained for an hour, more or less. I showered in the team locker room, to avoid Wednesday as long as I could. At 7 pm, after wandered the academia all over, I felt ready to face Wednesday.
I was lying to myself. The instant I entered the dining room, her smell hit me from the other side of the room.
The wolf growled. "I want her". I want her, too I thought. Then, I wore my usual smile and sat with my impossible crush and my friends determined to work on this mistery, hoping it would push my mind away from my roomate.
