Chapter 5
Wednesday's POV
I've been in Nevermore for 2 weeks now. I started to like this place more than I'd like to admit.
During the past weeks, Enid kept acting like herslef, she just didn't ask me to do anything else with her, so I guess that was her way of respecting my boudaries.
There was still a mistery about my roomate, tho. Why was she here? What kind of supernatural creature was she?
I didn't know how to approach the topic so I tried to investigate by myself.
I examined her side of the room - while she wasn't there, obviously - but the only thing I found out is that she lost a lot of hair but besides that, nothing unusual.
I tried to understand something about her basing on the lessons she followed: botanic, maths, literature, history, science and, apparently, lacrosse. Which explain the amount of sports uniform I kept found everywhere. Again, nothing unusual.
Thing looked at me during the all time. "What are you looking for?" it asked.
- I'm trying to understand who is my roomate - I replied.
"You're roomate is Enid. What else do you need to know?"
- I don't know. Maybe why is she here? I mean, you saw her. If it wasn't for the school uniform, you'd think she's a human like others.
"She's not?"
- She wouldn't be here, if she was, don't you think? - I asked Thing.
"You're a normal human and you're still here."
- I'm a lot of things but definitively not normal - I said, death-staring at Thing. - And we both know I have witch blood flowing in my veins. You know Grandma.
"Ok, so you're a witch. The other students are some kind of supernatural creatures and, by consequences, you think she must be a supernatural being, too?"
- Do you have any other idea about why would she'd be here?
Thing didn't have the chance to replied cause Enid entered in that moment, bringing her lacrosse racket with her.
- Hey - she said to me and Thing. - I need a shower, we're going to dinner toghether?
- Sure - I replied before she got in the bathroom. When I heard the water pouring, I looked at Thing. - Do you know what creatures she might be? - I asked.
"Ask her and you're solved all your problems" It replied.
Ask her? Ask another person about her feeling?
Absolutely no. I was curious? Yes. But I still have enough brain to know that asking Enid about herself would bring her to ask me questions about myself. And I would rather die.
- I'm gonna find it in some other way. - I said to Thing before grabbing my laptop and start my investigation, sat on my bed, while Thing took place next to me.
I googled "Supernatural creatures list" and internet sent me to "Suprnatural wiki". There was an alphabetic order and I started looking at the possibilities.
"Angels". Possible but I don't think Angels would choose to live with other supernatural beings. According to the website they were pretty "exclusive". They talked and relate just to eachother.
"Aliens". I don't think so. Maybe Ajax was an alien but certainly not Enid.
"Banshee". Sound like a possibility.
" They are spirits from the gaelic traditions and devided in two categories: malevolent banshees look like female with dark flowing hair..."
Nope, Enid's hair is blonde.
"bla bla bla ... Benevolent banshees are tied to lore and cry out to warn of impending death." Possible.
I opened a new file and start writing notes about banshee.
In the next twenty minutes I found other possible beings Enid might be:
- changeling: humanoid with discolored, slimy skin, hollow eyes, and a round mouth with many teeth. They can appear , but their true nature is revealed in reflection.
- demigod: like Xavier, but probably the offspring of another mythology
- nephlim: the product of the union between a human and an angel
- skinwalker or werewolf: they shape shift into an animal, they are killed by silver weapons, they infect people with a single bite, and they feed on human hearts.
There were my options.
Thing looked at the file from my shoulders and shook his index in disappointment. It jumped on the laptop and signed "You know you can just ask her, right?".
- Yes, I know. But I'm not gonna do that. - I replied.
- Do what? - Enid asked, going out the bathroom followed by a hot steam wave.
- My chores - I lied, on the moment. - If Thing is here, I think it should do the bed even if it doesn't use it.
I saved the file and closed my laptop, leaving it on the bed. - I'm hungry, come on. - I said leading to the door without checking if Enid was following or not.
She was. Obviously.
That dinner was the beginnig of everything that come forward.
We were eating and chatting, the entire sale full of the sound of chewing mouth, chit chat and cutlery.
Then, someone of the staff enter the door, screaming "Fire! The cabin is on fire". Everyone, students and teachers, moved out and we saw the light of the fire from far afar and then we got hit by the smoke.
A lot of start coughing, and I can't blame them considering their advanced senses. I heard Enid coughing behind me and I turned around to check on her.
- I'm okay - she said, despite her watered eyes.
That was an useful information. It excluded banshee from my list.
- Miss Weems, we find the coulprit - One of the member of the staff said, followed by one of the guardian who was holding a guy whose face was covered by his sweater hood. I've never seen him at the academia.
- We found him in the woods behind the cabin. He refused to say his name or why he's here.
The keeper took off the hood from the guy's face. He was tall, with short and wavy hair.
"Hey, Mum" were his first words.
- Tyler - The principal sighed - What are you doing here?
So the pyromaniac was the principal's son. This sound like the plot of a trash thriller you can bought from any second-hand-stand.
- Apparently, I'm being hold by one of the member of your stuff - he said, looking at the guardian behind him.
- Thank you, Lucas. You can let go my son. - The principal said and the guardian let go of the guy, who started stretching his shoulders.
- Why are you here, Tyler? And did you set the cabin on fire? - Miss Weems asked his son.
- I'm here 'cause Dad dropped me here, since he's about to go somewhere on the West Coast 'cause of his job. To answer your second question, no, I didn't set your cabin on fire, Mother. I got lost in the dark and went in the wrong direction. When I saw the light, I just went there. But, then, I found out it come from a fire. Before I had time to move your gorilla jumped over me and brought me here without listening to my explanations.
Tyler's statement was followed by silence.
- It makes sense - Miss Weems said. - The staff will bring you to an empty room. Tomorrow I want to talk with you about everything. Do you have any luggage with you? - She asked.
- I lost them somewhere near the now-ashes-cabin.
- The fire is out - Another of the staff mambers come to say. - We find this there - They add, showing a militar green bag.
- Those are my luggage - Tyler said, pointing at the bag.
- Alright. Tyler, you and your luggage will follow Mary to your room - The principal said. Instantly, one of the waitress moved, grabbed the bag and wave at Tyler to make him follow her. - Everyone else, in your room. The fire is estinguished. The guardians will check the academia's property to be sure no strangers are here. You'll be safe and we're gonna talk about this tomorrow morning.
Enid and I went back to our room.
- What do you think? Did the principal's son set the cabin on fire, in your opinion? - She asked me when I closed the door behind me.
- I don't think so. He didn't have any reason to do so - I replied, while laying on my bed and opening my laptop. I deleted banshee from the file while Enid updated Thing about what happened.
- Why do you think he is here? - She asked, I don't know if to me or to Thing. - He seems pretty normal to be a new student at Nevermore.
- You seem pretty normal too and, yet, here you are - I replied before realizing I said that out loud. I looked at Enid. She and Thing were staring at me.
- You don't know why I'm here? - She asked me and I'm pretty sure she was smirking while asking me that question.
- No - I replied, drily.
- And this is annoying you - She kept going, openly smiling now.
The fact that she understand me that good after spending just two weeks with me was annoying.
- No - I said again.
There were a few silent instant before Enid speak again. - Are you gonna ask me?
- If you want to tell me, I'll be here - I said.
She laughed under her breath. - You don't start conversations, usually, right? - I didn't answer.
Thing knocked the desk, catching our attention.
"I'm gonna ask you." It signed. "What kind of supernatural creature are you?"
- Thank you for the question, Thing. - Enid said, smiling. - I'm a werewolf, from the pack of San Francisco.
I was right after all. At least one of my option was the right answer, so I'm gonna count it as a win.
Thing knocked again. "See? I told you. You could have just asked her instead of making research"
-You did research?!? - Enid asked, looking amused at the perspective.
- Maybe - I said shrugging my shoulders, suddenly uncomfortable.
- Let me see - Enid said, leading to me and sitting on my bed.
She was invading my personal space. Again. Damn!
I opened the laptop, anyway, and move it towards her. She started reading the different notes I took while I sat as further form her as the bed allowed me.
- Not bad, for someone with your basic knowledge of supernatural creatures. - Enid commented.
Excuse me? Basic knowledge of supernatural creatures? Did this girl didn't know anything about me?
She didn't, actually. I didn't talk about my family with her or anyone in general.
- How would you find out if I'm a changeling or a Nephilim? - Enid asked me, looking at me.
- I would put a mirror in front of you to see if you're a changeling and make you touch something made of silver to check if you were a skinwalker or a werewolves. If you got tested negative to both my test, you'd be a Nephilim. - I said.
- Wow- She looked at me, impressed. - You're smarter than I thought.
- Is this suppose to be a compliment? - I asked, genuinely confused.
- That was the idea but I just realized it didn't sound as a compliment - She said, leaving my bed and jumping on the yellow sheets that covers hers.
- Goodnight, Wednesday. 'Night, Thing. - She said turning off the lights. Like she has done everynight since I - and Thing - became her roomates.
Thing jumped in its drawer-bedroom and knocked. I said "Goodnight" and lied in the bed, smelling Enid's scent on my blancket. Blueberry and honey.
That smell kept hunting me even in my dreams.
