It always started with the same question, “So, James, anything new recently?” Remus asked, with a knowing look on his face. They were in the library, studying for their upcoming transfiguration quiz. They did this every Friday. They’d meet in the library and study. But they did more than just study, they told secrets. Remus can’t remember how their arrangement even started but it’s been going on for years now. It started off with small things but sometimes they get much bigger. It’s how Remus told James he was a werewolf back in first year, it was the first big thing he told him. It’s also how he came out to James and told him he was in love with Sirius.
James has told him many things too. He’d told him that he was, supposedly, in love with Lily back in first year but then in third told him that he wasn’t anymore and had realized that he hadn’t been for a long time. It’s also how James came out to Remus, telling him he didn’t care about what gender someone was and that he just wanted to fall in love. They’ve also shared small things too, like how James cheated on his last herbology quiz just because he didn’t feel like studying for it.
“Actually Remus there is something new that I would like to share.” James said as he put his quill down and looked up at Remus.
“Oh! Do tell!” Remus was intrigued. It seemed to be a big one based off of James’ excited expression.
“I met someone.”
“What? Really?”
“Yeah.”
“Oh my god! That’s amazing! Who is it?”
James hesitated for a moment and shifted his gaze down and away from Remus. “It’s Regulus.”
Remus was shocked. How did that even happen? Obviously Remus had seen them interacting before but it was always Regulus insulting James and James just smiling at h- Oh my god! They were so in love! Remus could see it now. James didn’t just smile at Regulus, he had absolute love in his eyes. And Regulus wasn’t just insulting him, everytime he looked away he’d have a small smile on his face. A smile grew on Remus’ face at that thought.
“Uh, Moony, say something.” James said, nervously. He turned his head back and looked at Remus. James was twisting his hands in his lap. James always felt like he needed his friend’s approval for things like this. He didn’t care about everyone else's opinion but his friends were a different story, they were his family after all.
Remus looked James in the eyes and just smiled. After a few seconds he just blurted his own secret out. “I’m shagging Sirius.”
“Are you really?” James instantly changed his mood. He never thought they’d actually start something, they’d only been pining after each other for years. James held his hand in the air, Remus leaned over and high fived him. “This is great! Now we’ll all actually be family!” James had a grin on his face that Remus had only seen after they’d pulled off a meticulous prank.
“James, you know we’re already family.”
“Yeah, yeah we are.”
